You can be a tough taskmaster. There are different ways of being a captain. I don't know them all, and I don't know which ones are best. But I know that you can be a tough test. Yet it seems like it has a real purpose. And you alluded to it last night to the group. The idea of bringing tradition. Why are you tough? Well, it's got to be personality. I'd like to go to a school to unlearn quite a bit of that personality. I really believe that it's tough because it's a difference between danger and safety. And maybe I harp on it much too much because I've seen so much where it can go wrong. Not because it has, but I've seen the potential. I've been in the cell training business a long time. And when you're by yourself with ten other people who don't know what they're doing but need to know because they want to participate, you overstretch yourself to the point where sometimes you need to be pretty direct to get their attention front and center so that the little bit of knowledge they've learned doesn't leave them with the confusion that they can do anything. So there's safety and then the second rank is theirs. There's financial mistakes, cost a lot of money. And then the other thing is, is that if they can get the job done right and have the knowledge that it's been done right and the rest of the time is fair play. And so that's not Hinkley Pink around where we're going to be a sailor and not realize the consequences of being sloppy about it or inefficient about it. Because it takes up so much time if we're sloppy and inefficient. And ultimately it could lead to a safety problem.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114050/file/216788#t=2.89,120.23"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114050/file/216788/transcript/61543/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And I feel a bit overextended sometimes, and I think that's when I get the roughest. A lot of my contemporaries say I'm prone to that, but they also say, I don't know anybody else who can do it as comfortably as you seem to do it. Anybody can do it in my book. Sailing the sailing like driving a car or flying a plane. It takes that dedication to learn how to do it. And we have a crew on board that are very dedicated to learning how to do and have brought a lot of talents with them and coordinating 11 other persons so that they start to think as a whole. Is it a delicate balance between dictatorial nature and demands and asking for their input? Because you can't possibly think about everything that has to be done at every instant hour, all day long? You need their teamwork, but you don't want to shrink them down into robots. They're not paid not to. They're paid to think. Not to not think. And that's something that employees sometimes, especially those with not a great deal of experience, forget. And that'll get my cage rattled sometimes. Please don't be a robot. All right, Let's get to the point where things are working well. This is your final shot. Things are working well. Shipshape. It's clean. Everyone's doing their job. And the sails are full. And there's not a lot of weather to worry about. And you're on a direct course. It's a glorious sight. What is it? What is it? Tell me about the Majesty. What makes this so darn special to the world? Oh, sure. And so many poets and writers have and have written about it and still continue to write about it. I've lived with it so much that sometimes I forget how beautiful it can be. You get caught up in the rush of business. But we've had two or three points where things have been absolutely glorious on board this vessel that we're still trying to put into shape. And one of them, I remember, was actually in the dark. We were sailing through the Northeast Providence Channel, headed towards the west. The boat was just charging along on a relatively smooth sea. There was a reason it was clear. So we had a lot of starlight, a little bit of light off in the distance from some of the islands around us, an unearthly quiet back aft when no one was speaking. We didn't have any generator running. And then you'd walk forward and you'd hear this slow increase of water rushing noise and you'd lean over the bow. And it was, of course, just thunderous. And as we went over the swells, there was no feeling of deceleration acceleration. It was just a slight increase of the noise and then a slight decrease of the noise that she just would lift gracefully and fall gracefully and her speed wouldn't change a great deal. The you just came close to having a few goose bumps with a sense of, all right, this is this is business. This is this is what's not what it's all about. But this is something we have to be gloried in. And what we are as a crew individually, we hunger for. So when it happens, it's glorious. And how you write about it or speak about it, I don't know.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114050/file/216788#t=230.45,353.09"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114050/file/216788/transcript/61543/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But when we're pretty and when I know we're pretty, we're the prettiest thing there ever was. Final question. I'm the English speaking interviewer from somewhere, and we're having a radio interview. And I ask you one question and you're going to tell people, What is it? It's not the pride of Baltimore. The ship we're building in Baltimore, this ship that used to be a source of pride of Baltimore, this concept of this board of directors. I mean, what is the pride of Baltimore, a unique ambassador bringing forth from Maryland and Baltimore, The wish, a friendship. We want to show and tell something that is a part of Maryland and Baltimore. She's owned by the state, but she was built by the people. And that our purpose is to make ourselves available to the public and private corporations of Maryland and the city of Baltimore wherever we go. And if they're not using the vessel, we're here to make people aware of the fact that there is a Baltimore and there is a maryland. Thank you. Our ride is right. What? Perfect timing, we think. Make sure I turn around. Okay. Mark, why do you do it? Why did you choose to spend over three months of your life doing this this time around? Um, I can say it's my occupation, but that's kind of a boring answer. It is an occupation. I'll do it for a living right now. But I like working on boats and travel at the sea. Different places, different people. There's a thing about deckhands, and that is they're always on their way to doing something else. And yet you seem to be alone and different. You've got to you've got to catch this license already. Is it your life? I mean, are you different from the ordinary deckhand? Some deckhands are just here for a while. But what do you feel about the legacy of the original pride? Something that impacts on you at all? You know, the fact that it sank. I don't really think of it that much. It's. I don't know. They they all knew it when they got in the bird. That could have happened. I know in this bird it could happen. Or any other book that I saw it on that it happened. It doesn't really affect me very much that it happens. About saying, What does it feel like? Tell me. I mean, tell me. Because when I look at that little kid inside of me said, Wow, that'd be great. And then grown up, it's got to be says, No way would I ever need that. What does it feel like when you're climbing the tip top of there? That's great. That's one of the best parts of the job if you enjoy that type of thing. I like it a lot. A lot of times you go up and you're just doing your work. But when you get done doing your work and stop and look around, it's really fun, exciting. It's also I do it for a living. You can't do that anywhere else. What's your absolute favorite time in the 24 hour cycle of the work? What's the time that just, you know, it's yours. You love it. Well, I could I could say at the end of the day, because we it's tough work, but I don't mind working either. It's just when I'm doing something on the boat that I enjoy doing. I like it then. And yet it seems that there are some times when. It can be magic or, you know, maybe once every long period of time we need to sit there and it's a sunrise or a moonrise or a sunset. Are there ever any times like that, Fred? Oh, yeah. A lot of times. It's mainly when we're sailing. It's great when everything's to get a boat like this, to move through the water with no other propulsion where the wind is really nice. Something this size and this design of especially. It's a lot of sail on it. It's just a few people controlling it. This is not good feeling as a sailor with a lot of experience. What's what you like the best about your camp? And I can best knows what he's doing. And Nick communicates with the crew. It's kind of hard on everybody, but I think the only reason he does it is because he wants us all to learn, wants to teach us. So that's his way of doing it. Except that. Thank you. You're welcome. Appreciate it. Sure. You. Think about it maybe a week later, this week ahead of time. Hmm. He turns. You have the unusual dual experience of having spent time on the original private Jets pride. What's it mean to you to have that association? I don't know. It's great. You know, these are both been just about the finest vessels a person could ever hope to sail on. And back then it was not quite as well organized and it was a simpler day back then. It was my first schooner I'd worked on and we slept in hammocks and dipped our fresh water out of the barrel. And it was much simpler, both inside and out. But she was a good both. I really loved her a lot. Um. Why are you doing this? I mean, you've done a lot in your life, and you're getting ready to go do some surfing, and all of a sudden, bingo. Here you are. I mean, why the devil you do it? Listen, you could be making money.
