Last night, the city seemed to turn into a shooting gallery with several people gunned down in separate incidents in Irvington, southwest Baltimore. The teenage boy was killed in what may have been someone else's gunfight. That's where 14 year old Brunel Briggs fell on Massachusetts Avenue in Irvington late last night. A few moments later, he was dead at the hospital. Several people saw him get shot and then run, and they are not sure the bullets were even meant for him. That kid, I'm pretty sure, wasn't meant to be shot. You know, someone else going to be shot, I'm pretty sure, because I know that kid and his brother and there was no reason for him to be shot. According to Anthony and others, six shots were fired from either in or near that car. And whoever was pulling the trigger kept on even after the gun was empty. My girlfriend says she heard the gun still clicking and she said and me and her both heard a girl laughing. It was like she had a big smile on her face and she was laughing. One girl. Yeah. All right. I was sitting on my porch and I saw the car pull up, but I know, you know, I didn't think it was her. And I saw the lady with the blond hair get out, walk over, and then walk back their car. And as they were leaving, I saw the police go, you know, stop the car. And I've got the lady in question.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136064/file/252461#t=125.53,235.41"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136064/file/252461/transcript/70828/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And it turns out police did more than that talking to the woman, but charging someone in the car with her with Briggs first degree murder. Two other aspects to all this from what both police and members said at the scene. The Street is known for its nighttime activity and that the victim appeared much younger than his years. Yeah, I'm going to the child party to go and watch how you go down. He still child? The man from Miami has a bail hearing scheduled for later this afternoon. Baltimore police are also still looking for two suspects seen running from the scene of another overnight homicide. 18 year old Larry Owens of Baltimore was shot to death about 11 a.m. last night as he was sitting on his bike near the corner of Longwood Street and North Avenue. Police say he was shot in the back of the head. Detectives tell us Owens has had have had as many as 30 bags of what is believed to be heroin on him at the time. And police are investigating yet another homicide which occurred early this morning in the 2900 block of Parkwood Avenue, north west Baltimore. Police have not identified the dead man. They are still searching for suspects and a motive. Police say they may be getting close to arresting a man suspected of shooting an undercover police officer earlier this week. Baltimore is apparently headed for more drug drug related violence caused by the growing use of crack cocaine. The prediction comes from a Justice Department study on drugs. Federal prosecutors in Baltimore say most law enforcement authorities agree the drug violence in the District of Columbia is headed for Baltimore if it's not already here. They say the violence is already spilling into Prince George's County because of the increased use of crack. Half a world away, there's an optimistic note in the hostage crisis. Iranian President Rafsanjani is offering to help the US find a way to free the hostages now. He held a meeting this morning to discuss the hostages and maybe push for a deal. But today, doctors at the Institute for Medical Research in San Jose announced the result of a three year study with a new drug called Deborah Now. Baltimore segregation problems are among the worst in the nation. So says a study from the University of Chicago. That research found the problem so severe in some U.S. cities that it coined a new phrase. Hyper segregation. The study focuses on housing patterns and says various forms of segregation isolate blacks in major cities, depriving them of opportunities and resources. The researchers say this is affecting blacks social and economic well-being and is creating a separate society of underachievers. Some blacks in Baltimore say they do feel isolated. They're trying to keep us at one and one spot when we should be everywhere. Others say they don't feel they're being kept away from opportunities. But this woman indicated she does very little outside her own neighborhood. Because if I want to do something, I'll get up and do it now. But it's nothing that I really do. Although he says he was not surprised by the study. We asked how Baltimore might correct the problem. It requires more than simply putting a black family in the apartment next door to a white family. We need to work on all of the things which diminish our quality of life. This means we have serious drug problems. We have a very serious dropout rate with a very serious teen pregnancy rate. Dr. Goodwin says some forms of segregation are self-imposed. And at least one black resident in Baltimore says it's up to the people who live in these neighborhoods to make change happen. It's our own faults that. We're in the circumstances that we're in. You have opportunities there. There. We can go as far as we want to go. Dr. Goodwin of Morgan State University says while segregation is a problem in Baltimore, the black population in Baltimore County is increasing. State and local health departments are calling it an epidemic. The disease is hepatitis A, and it is making hundreds of people sick in Maryland. We have team coverage on the hepatitis outbreak, beginning with Alex Demetric, who reports the highly contagious disease is tough to fight since it doesn't come from any single source soil. A news conference was called to announce the numbers. As of today, there have been over 400 cases of hepatitis A reported in Baltimore, Maryland, as a whole. This is more than twice as many as there were reported last year. The center of the outbreak is Baltimore City and county, where as many as 60 new cases of hepatitis A are being reported each month. And it is not restricted to any one neighborhood or source of infection. It's scattered throughout the city. Occupation does not seem to play a significant role in who contacts the disease. Hepatitis A virus breeds in human waste. It is sometimes passed during cooking. Although the vast majority of Baltimore's cases have nothing to do with food handling, it is instead passed among groups of people with close contact, such as families. There is also a growing percentage of hepatitis A among drug users, not because of needles, but because infected fingers are handling the drugs. As for the source of the infection, health experts believe Baltimore's outbreak was brought in by people visiting from outside. We really haven't seen much hepatitis A, so I think that the virus got introduced into the community and then it looks like it spread through the usual routes. Those routes are paved by poor hygiene, but even so, it takes lab tests to verify each case of hepatitis A and with symptoms sometimes hard to spot. Health experts expect at least another 300 cases to flare up before the current epidemic runs its course. Alex Gibney for Channel 13 Eyewitness News. Hepatitis A is a virus that attacks the liver. The symptoms a person can feel nauseous, tired, have whitish bowel movements, brownish or tea colored urine. A person can have jaundice that's yellow tint to the skin and eyes. But 90% of kids with hepatitis C show no symptoms at all. Now, that doesn't mean they can't pass on the virus. They do. Changing diapers without washing your hands afterwards is one easy way to spread hepatitis A. Question number two what's the difference between hepatitis A and hepatitis B? Hepatitis A virus lives in human waste. While hepatitis B virus lives in the blood. Hepatitis B can cause permanent liver damage and is usually more serious than a. The major problems with hepatitis A are that it causes people to be out of work. Some have to be hospitalized, but it does not cause a long term career stage or long term liver disease. Unfortunately, the symptoms for both hepatitis A and B are similar. That's why you would need a special blood test to tell the difference. In 1989, we have more cases of hepatitis A than we have cases of hepatitis B, So we think it's very important that physicians recognize the increase in hepatitis A and the need to appropriately diagnosed hepatitis A from hepatitis B. How do you treat hepatitis A? Unfortunately, there's no specific treatment once you get hepatitis C. GSA operated as an independent agency. All no matter how old you are, most of us could use a few extra dollars to help meet ends meet now and then. And in tonight's Years ahead, Leona Morris shows us how one woman found that extra cash by getting all dolled up. Yes. And believe me, that's very true. This is a woman who virtually is up to her ears in work and she just loves doing it. She's really excited about it. Mattie Cecelia Hart knows her doll problems. Celia decided to get back into the workforce to make some extra money. She joined the Baltimore County Senior Aid program, which taught her new skills to reenter the workforce. So we'll have Bob's up, go to give us the gloomy news about the weekend. Well, like I said, I mean, this is a kind of weather that we are going to have in Baltimore in August. And one of those weekends, I think when good advice is to sit in the backyard and get some crabs and a beverage or two or some air conditioning, which might even better, well, bring the crabs in for you. Well, that's not a bad idea. But actually, some folks around the area found a way to stay cool today. And we had people looking at swimming pools. I mean, as a good thing to have. And I think we have some video of that. Let's go ahead and take a look at that in the swimming pools. That was the place to be this afternoon. We got to a high temperature in the city of 99 degrees, no doubt about that. But coupled with the humidity, I mean, it's definitely a very uncomfortable kind of day. And out the suburbs, not a whole lot cooler. 92 at the airport. Other temperatures, other high temperatures around the area down to Washington, 94, 92 at Salisbury.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136064/file/252461#t=3258.22,3355.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136064/file/252461/transcript/70828/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So very definitely warm temperatures everywhere we look now. The temperatures are still holding up in the 90s for the most part, just having dropped below that in some of the more remote locations down in the eastern shore. Winds in the bay tomorrow will be from the west at 10 to 18 knots. Now through the haze, which could look for some clouds and rainfall. But as radar map will show, there isn't a whole lot of rainfall anywhere in the immediate area. We've got to go all the way out into western Pennsylvania, northeastern Ohio. And there's a very distinct line of weather have turned out to be some pretty good thunderstorms up there. And interestingly enough, this is the leftover moisture from what was Tropical storm Chantal that came in to the golf course Gulf Coast many days ago and has made its way all the up to the Great Lakes, Chicago, Illinois, in the last 12 hours. Some areas have had over four inches of rain from this. But this moisture will be scooting more to the north of us. And we think that it may give us an outside shot at a shower, particularly in the northern part of our viewing area. That's up toward the Pennsylvania line, maybe over the Pennsylvania line. After midnight tonight, we don't see a real threat from showers for our area, although New England is definitely going to see the results of that. This is the dominating system right now. The forecast for the rest of tonight, we're going to continue with hazy and humid conditions. It's going to be a pretty warm night and a chance of a late shower. Like I said, that's late after midnight. And the best chance is to the north of Baltimore, up toward the Pennsylvania line, overnight low, a muggy 75 degrees. We have encouraging news tonight for Aids patients who are taking the drug AZT. Healthwatch report around Kelowna is here with the latest developments in the fight against Aids. Why is it the only government approved Aids drug right now? Topping tonight's Health Watch, the drug AZT, significantly slows the progress of the Aids virus and victims with only early symptoms of the disease. And FDA officials are moving quickly to make it more readily available to Aids patients. Until now, the drug had only been used on patients whose immune system had already been severely damaged by the Aids virus. Also in Health Watch, results of a California study may have paved the way for a breakthrough for Parkinson's disease. Doctors are cautiously excited. This is only one small study. But if the drug definitely does what the study says it does, for the first time, medicine has slowed the progress of this debilitating disease. It's sometimes like controlling something. So in 1981, Ed Blazak was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. We've interviewed him before, and today he tells us he has seen his tremors getting worse. But if I'm eating Cheerios or something like that with a spoon, you'd like to shake it too much by just switch over your mother. With Parkinson's, the brain stops producing a crucial chemical dopamine in the base of the brain, and the brain cells slowly die, according to the study. Deborah know slows that action. But Deborah Nel, according to Dr. Moses, has only been approved for advanced stages of the disease. And even though the study shows promise for early stage sufferers, Dr. Moses advises caution. It's too soon to know whether all patients with Parkinson's disease should receive deferential or other drugs. If this finding is confirmed with other studies, then we and other neurologists would recommend that patients with both early and advanced disease take Deborah now. But it's too soon to know that. Would you consider taking this drug now? I would consider it, of course. And I have to ask my doctor for her. As for Deborah, no side effects. They have been fortunately minor today, but there can be alterations in blood pressure and and confusion. It's also very important that the medication be taken in the proper dose because it has major adverse effects if it's taken in excessive amounts. What do you think? Have my fingers crossed. Hoping. Sure. It could be for you, I certainly hope so. Right now, Johns Hopkins is one of 20 centers around the country taking part in a bigger study involving this this new drug. It's exciting, Deborah. Now you see, Deborah, now, if I understand it correctly, so far at Hopkins, they're testing it on the advanced stages of Parkinson's. So this new study will be on the early stages, the advanced stages they're already using, and it's already FDA approved. Now they're testing on the early stages and they want to make sure it's not masking the symptoms, that the disease isn't progressing and it's just masking it and making you feel better.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136064/file/252461#t=3871.12,3973.75"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136064/file/252461/transcript/70828/annotation/38","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And so they want to make sure it's not doing that. Well, in southwest Baltimore this weekend, they're holding the 13th annual Carroll Park Invitational Slow pitch softball tournament. But in his commentary tonight, Michael Lasker says it's not just softball. It's more like a community festival. Carol Park, They've begun tonight's game and all day Saturday and all day Sunday good time. The idea for the games came out of Sid's Tavern at Washington Boulevard and Kerry Street. John Koons and Stuart Kotecki sat around one day and said, We've got to give this community a little shot in the arm. They came up with a softball tournament. But the tournament has become a kind of outdoor group therapy session for Pig Town and for Southwest Baltimore at large. Year in, year out, more than a thousand people show up. They come to watch the softball and to eat and drink and play games of chance and also to reinforce a sense of community. At Sid's Tavern yesterday, John Koons said some people think Pig Town is the other side of the tracks. But we always took pride in this neighborhood. Softball tournament is an expression of that pride. In a way, it's a microcosm of Baltimore, an unpretentious little part of town that nobody thinks much about except the people who live there and gather to feel good about themselves. I'm Michael, Alaska. Thank you, Michael. Well, John Baron is next with sports. Yes, he's live on 33rd Street to welcome the birds back home. John, I haven't been here for a while. And a lot is going to be valid or by blocking. But someone I think, is going to have to assume that role if they're going to win the starting pitching. He's just got to improve. Two questions I asked encourage and I'll ask you today. Can they win it? And do you think they will win? I think this is a key game tonight, coming back home. I think it's a key stretch of games if they can regain some of the momentum now. I think they can certainly win. It's kind of neat, but there's a lot of pressure. And I can see, you know, playing at home is it's a lot of pressure, I think. It was not a large crowd following her play this morning. Only a few friends and her mother, Norma. She's been following her daughter all year. And in her mind, Tina has met every expectation. She never makes a dime. All the enjoyment she's given me out of it is, you know, is payment enough. But I think I hope she makes many times. Yet after 20 tournaments in seven months. This graduate of Perry Hall High School has earned only $13,000 and her chances of making money in this tournament now appear very slim. Matter of fact, she is now in doubt of making the cut here tomorrow. What really seem to hurt today, very poor. Putting on the back nine so mad kind of went this three putted three times and finishing like I did. I was doing all right for a while and then I went three over the last four holes. And I'm not really pleased for Kenny. Today was Norm Borkowski, the head pro out at Sparrow's Point. Is private development on the stadium site, maybe a restaurant museum or hotel in the Camden Yard warehouse or Camden Station in order to save the state some money. The site could offer some excellent commercial possibilities. Reducing the financial burden on the state is a terrific idea, and attracting entrepreneurs to invest in the stadium is a creative way to do it. The problem is this It's unclear whether the authority has the authority to proceed. The law that established the agency confines it to sports related activities. But at the same time directs it to encourage private investment. The stadium authority needs clear approval from the General Assembly to pursue on site development. The authority is wise to start seeking that approval now. It's a plan that makes awareness of everyone involved the state, the sports fans and private industry. This was a W WJC ETV editorial. Well, I think the crack dealers are always looking for a territory where there's not a rival gang. It's only a matter of time, officials say. The people who live between the two beltway say they can feel the wave coming. It can get a whole lot worse if they don't do something to stop it. For the night, Hendricks and Brandy, Channel 13 Eyewitness News, The number of crack related emergency room admissions has increased 1,000% in this country in the last five years. A research project focusing on teenagers and drugs has resulted in some rather sobering conclusions about crack. Sociologists studied 254 teenage crack users and got them to confess to a stunning average of 880 crimes a year each. That is a total of 223,000 crimes such as robbery and assault, all committed in one year by that one group of teens.
