And we'll have the latest on the strike. There's not much to report. Well, the latest on the Orioles. That's not all that good. And we'll have a priest who spends his time off looking for the perfect way. Well, that sounds good. Here's a look at what else is coming up next on Eyewitness News at five. Baltimore City police search a home looking for a drug dealer. Now, the woman who lives there says she wants an apology. I'm not a drug dealer. I don't sociate with drugs. I don't associate with drug dealers. Witnesses tell what this woman's husband said before he allegedly doused her with gasoline and lit a match. A Maryland woman who says she was driven away from her job as a garbage truck driver gets a big cash settlement. Getting your car to pass new state emissions tests. It's going to be tough. Dave Serio tells you what you ought know. And the spirit of Afram 94 is alive and well in Baltimore. You're watching TV. This is Eyewitness News at five. Using bombs to make a point. Good evening, everyone. The White House says an airstrike by American jets is a message to the Bosnian Serbs. The strike by native warplanes at targets around Sarajevo is designed to enforce an order banning heavy weapons in that city. American officials report two US A-10 Warthogs and two French Mirage jets struck a target in Bosnia. The attack was in retaliation for violations by Serbs of the weapons ban and more attacks are possible. Failure to use this type of force, especially under these circumstances, also invites further attacks and retaliation by the Serbian forces. And it seems to us that history has proven, proven out that it's more dangerous not to react and to react.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647#t=4.51,110.56"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647/transcript/62498/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The bombing today follows a request by the United Nations. Sarajevo remains a dangerous place and residents do their best to stay out of the line of fire. U.N. peacekeepers called for the air support for their protection. What's next in this international crisis? Reporter Lisa Stark joins us live from Washington with late developments. She's monitoring reaction from the White House, the United Nations and Sarajevo. Lisa. The White House says it has been pushing for strong action by Naito all week long in the face of increasing provocation by the Bosnian Serbs. The final straw came in the early morning hours at a U.N. weapons collection site. The NATO airstrikes were ordered by the U.N. after Bosnian Serbs seized a tank and artillery out from under U.N. guard. The Serbs then fired on a U.N. helicopter trying to locate the weapons. The weapons taken were among those turned over by the Serbs last February. They were vowing to pressure to end the siege of Sarajevo. Today's removal of weapons can only be considered a deliberate act undertaken by the Bosnian Serbs in full awareness of the consequences. I regret the use of force. Our job as peacemakers is to keep the road to peace open. But there is a limit. The planes involved in the action included at least two American A-10 Air Force jets like these one target, an armored vehicle, was hit by an American pilot. Secretary of State Warren Christopher called the action a positive step. I think this is a way to keep additional pressure on the Bosnian Serbs to. Except the contact Group peace plan. We hope it'll have that effect. At the White House, spokeswoman Dee Dee Myers warned of serious consequences if the Bosnian Serbs do not accept the peace agreement.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647#t=112.15,222.6"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647/transcript/62498/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"If the Bosnian Serbs continue to reject the proposal, a decision by the U.N. to lift the arms embargo could become unavoidable. In Sarajevo, sniper fire intensified after the airstrike. Two passengers on a city street car were wounded. The airstrikes apparently hit home. The Bosnian Serbs have now returned the weapons that they seized. But if there's a repeat performance by the Serbs, the White House is warning of additional air attacks. This is Lisa Stark reporting live from the White House. Now back to you. Thank you, Lisa. Some Maryland Air National Guardsmen know what it's like to fly missions over Bosnia. A group of Guardsmen arrived at BWI this afternoon. Family and friends eagerly awaiting their return. The men had served 28 days in Italy. Their mission providing air support to U.N. peacekeepers on the ground. You look down there and you see a lot of bombed out buildings down there. You see houses. You say that's a four room house. Well, how do I know it's four rooms? Well, the roof was blown off and I can see the four rooms inside. There's villages that were just almost completely leveled over there. It's very sad to see such destruction. These are real missions. Every mission that we went on, we practice as we would employ in wartime, because you may be called upon to do that, as these guys did. Today, apparently there is another group of Maryland guardsmen still in Italy providing this kind of support. It's not known whether they took part in today's raid. The city police department is bringing an out-of-state consultant to review the way arrests are made. It's just simply to look at how we're arresting people or are we taking advantage of the latest techniques that are out there and being utilized by the other departments? I guess the short of it is if what we're doing is outdated, then perhaps it needs to be changed. Specifically, the Baltimore City Police Commissioner, Thomas Frazier, had some concerns about how often his officers make what's called a felony arrest, where the suspects placed face down on the ground before the cuffs are applied. A consultant comes in next month. Let's take a look now at some other stories making headlines this Friday, August the 5th. An interim president of Frostburg State University and his wife were found slain in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina. 74 year old Harold Delaney and a 71 year old wife, Geraldine, were apparently robbed and then murdered. An Anne Arundel County Middle School teacher is charged with solicitation and indecent exposure. Police say a male plainclothes officer was approached by James Buber and saw Mill Creek Park. And the national unemployment rate edged up to 6.1%. But job growth was healthy. Maryland's jobless rate in June was 5.6%, a record high for that month. The Baltimore woman who sued the world's largest waste removal company for sexual discrimination has won. Dawn Monday said coworkers at Waste Management Corporation in Elkridge tried to drive her away from her job as a truck driver. She asked the judge for $13 million in damages. He gave her $77,000. And with that looming, you would think they would get right down to business. But in fact, the real issues of this thing are not going to be even discussed until the very last minute. Players and owners will meet Monday, but they will discuss non-economic issues. Only The bargaining session over the key sticking points like the salary cap aren't even scheduled until Wednesday, just two days before the strike deadline. If there is a strike, how about refunds for canceled Orioles games? The team is putting together a plan and they'll make an announcement when or if there is a strike next week. Now, all the movement towards a baseball strike next week has left fans to sweat it out while the war goes on between the owners and the players. And as Alex Demetrius reports from Milwaukee, where the Orioles are playing tonight, it's ruining not only the season but some pretty expensive vacations. Welcome the kind of stadium the Bruins would like to remind you that Milwaukee is the Orioles home away from home tonight, but they are not alone. A rough cut this summer. Like every summer, baseball fans from Maryland are with them. Families that save up all year to travel to ballparks and other cities. Vacations now threatened by a baseball strike which could begin next week. Our count our blessings here is we have three more sets of tickets, but don't look like we're going to get to see Kansas City or Saint Louis in Atlanta. I'm glad you're here. The whole issue of ball taking a back seat to business isn't any more comfortable for those who work in the front office. It's a worry for us. Yeah, I mean, the phone calls are coming in because like I said, we deal with our season and group clients and their major concern is what's going to happen. So we've been kind of taking care of them and kind of apologizing if there's an inconvenience that we may have caused. Paying customers in Milwaukee are worried and it stretches across the land to every park, especially when you have tickets away and at home. Oh, it's disappointing. You know, I mean, I'm a season ticket holder back in Baltimore and I pay a lot of money just like everyone else to go out and see baseball. And we want to see baseball for the whole season. And the fact the season could close down next Friday makes the clamor for an autographed ball even more desperate. And for a kid from Bel Air, it all boils down to a simple appraisal. I think it's stupid. Alex Demetrius, Channel 13, Eyewitness News. Well put. That's right. Well, he's not the only one who thinks it's stupid. Now, for Royals fans, the clip for this cliffhanger situation with the strike. Well, actually. And when the Orioles return home, they come back on Thursday. A lot of slow traffic, though, to contend with as you make your way into where the interstate routes start of the northbound side of the Fort McHenry Tunnel. Solid delays in from 395 under the Botafogo River and into the toll plaza area Harbor tunnel two way only about a 5 to 7 minute wait to make you remember the steel bridge. That is your best bet into the northbound side of I-95. Topside beltway only minor slowing now as you make your way between the two, 83 is out toward Loch Raven. Most of the slow traffic on the west side, north of I-95 up toward Frederick Road and the out of loop approaching the Jones Falls Expressway up the hill toward Green Spring Beach resorts. Very slow, southbound 87 approaching 450 overpass and once again from the 74 bridge all the way out toward the Ritchie Highway area, Cape St Clair. Once again, you'll find slow traffic out toward the main span of the Bay Bridge, heading down south into the Kings Dominion area, of course, down toward Virginia Beach. You see 301 Beltway on the capital Beltway that is is really tied up because of an earlier accident and also a car fire on the ATL tip at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in a loop stacked up solid all the way from prior to Route five Branch Avenue. More dramatic testimony today in the case of a Hartford County woman who says her husband tried to set her on fire. Ron Matz is live at the Hartford County Courthouse in Bel Air with the latest. Ron. Well, Sally, that's right. The two people who rescued Mary Mincer at her home in Edgewood the night of August 8th last year delivered some very important testimony for the prosecution today. They vividly recounted how they found a screaming woman doused with gasoline with her estranged husband, seemingly poised to set her on fire with his mother covered with gasoline. 18 year old Mary Mensah's son, Philip, No Lay testified that his stepfather held a lit match over his mother's head, but the match burned out. He said Robert Mentzer went to light another one. But as he tried to strike the second match, his mother escaped and she ran from the house and started screaming for help. James Terrell, Harford County hazardous materials expert who was called to Mary Minster's house that night, testified that her clothes had been soaked in gasoline and that if a match had been struck, she would have gone up in flames, in his words, like a torch. But the most dramatic testimony of the day came from Ronald Lawson, a neighbor. He said when he heard Mary Mincer screaming, he kicked her front door down and found Robert Mentzer holding her in a headlock with gasoline dripping from her head.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647#t=1111.82,1216.38"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647/transcript/62498/annotation/13","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"A lit match was in his other hand. I talked until the match burned out and got to him before he lit another match. He pulled out a knife and we struggled. He dropped the knife, and another neighbor came in and we got him on the floor until the police came. Prosecutor Beth Bowen displayed the knife and it was entered as a key piece of evidence for the prosecution. Sally That is a key evidence in this case. Nine witnesses, including Mary Mitchell, have testified for the state so far. We expect maybe 3 or 4 witnesses for the state. But just a few minutes ago, the chief prosecutor, Beth Boland, told the court that the state is nearing the end of its case. Sally, so the prosecution's case is nearing its end. When will the defense begin its case and what can we expect? Well, that's the big question right now, Sally. The public defender in this case, Amanda Buller, saying little about her strategy. The big question right now is whether Robert Mincer will testify in his own defense. And we will find that out probably early next week. Sally. Fair enough. Thank you. Now it's time for tonight's Healthwatch report. Do you hate your legs? Because they have lots of big, ugly veins. For many years, people have used surgical methods to remove varicose veins, but a new treatment called scleral therapy can be done right in the doctor's office. Michelle. How long has it been now? Since the injections? Oh, about six weeks. Six weeks? Good. Michelle Austin had terrible varicose veins. They look like people had bruised me. You know, I'd been hit or something like that in the back of my legs, and my kids would say, Ooh, what's that? And things like that. It kind of makes you want to do something about it. For Michelle, that something was scleral therapy using a needle. Doctors inject a solution into the veins. It makes the veins lining swell until blood can't get through without the blood. The vein collapses. It breaks up and gets absorbed by the body. The needle sticks burned for a few seconds like a bee sting. But doctors say that's one of the only negatives, especially when you compare it to veins surgery. Rather, it's about one 6 to 1 eighth. The cost of surgery. There's very little downtime. Patients are back to their routine activities within 12 hours, and it can be done right in the office without having to go through the rigors of surgery. There can be some side effects, an allergic reaction, a lump or tenderness that disappears in a few days. Some patients say their leg changes color at the injection spot. I think the discoloration we see here will probably fade within the next 6 to 8 weeks. Michelle's not worried. Brian Hammons and Dave Jenkins play doubles tennis this morning and made it to the third round before they were eliminated. Right now, the pair is resting for tonight's basketball competition and Brian will gear up for a singles tennis match this weekend. But Marylanders aren't the only ones taking part in the fourth annual transplant games. The competition attracts athletes from across the country. Joining us now on the phone in Call out to tell us more about the games is Olympic speed skater Kristin Talbot. Hi, Kristin. Hi, How are you? Fine, thanks. How are you? Great, thank you. You have a special interest in these games because of your brother Jason? That's right. Tell us about that. My brother Jason was diagnosed with a plastic anemia in December of 93, and he needed to have a bone marrow transplant. And luckily, I was a match and I donated bone marrow to him in January, just about a month before I competed in the 1994 Olympic Games in Lilyhammer. There's a reason why this story should be familiar to our viewers, because the procedure was done right here at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and we did many stories about it. How is Jason doing now, Kristen? Jason's doing great. Actually, he's in Baltimore at this point in time. Well, that's the way I've rated it. And I've seen in other ratings as well. Right here you've got the number one children's zoo in the country. Yeah, it's a it's a great place. I certainly think so. Really is. I also visited a lot of aquariums, the Baltimore Aquarium as well. Can you maybe comment on the aquarium? Well, this is supposed to be one of supposedly one of the best 2 or 3 aquariums in the country. And I've been there and it's wonderful. Also, by the way, they're having a 13th anniversary this weekend. I'll be there tomorrow. Just stop by for some cupcake will be to give some cupcakes in there about 1:00 or so. How do the American zoos compare to zoos in other places around the world? Have you been in there? Very well. From what I hear, I have no I have not traveled overseas. But from what I've my research. Zoos in Germany are particularly wonderful. The whole. When did zoos really get going? Well, they go all the way back to the ancient Egyptian rings and keeping and the Roman empires and stuff like that. But in this country started right after the Civil War fact the Civil War actually held up the Philadelphia. Is it from opening? So I never knew that. So that that's pretty much one of the started rolling in this country. How did you get interested in zoos? From having children, quite honestly. That's a lot. And also I have a great love of travel, so I travel all over the country. I went to many zoos all over the country and decided to write a book. It's called The Zoo Book. Okay. Same to you, Bob. Enjoy it while we can. Every Friday, we ask you to tell us what's cookin at your house. A woman from Edgemere wrote us a letter to say that Campbell's soup labels were what's cooking at her home. We decided to drop in on Peggy Cressman to see what she's talking about. Hello, Peggy. Hi, Sally. How are you? Fine. And you? Fine, thanks. Nice apron. Thank you very much. Tell us why you have so many labels. Well, we're collecting labels for education with the Campbell's Soup Company in order to give things for our clients down at the Bach Center. There's a variety of different products that Campbell's produces, and we have a catalog, and we can exchange them for everything from books to video cameras to if we go real hard and get 100,000, we can get a 15 passenger van. But this year we're aiming for a camcorder. So we're trying to get 82,000 of them. And how many do you have so far? About 2000. Okay. So you have a little ways to go. Yes. We want to tell our viewers at the Bach Center that you referred to is the Baltimore Association for Retarded Citizens in Dundalk. Your daughter, Cathy, attends the Dundalk Center. How are the people there benefiting from your efforts? Well, the parents provide recreation things for the clients to do. This year, when we sent in our Campbell's labels, we got some sporting equipment. So when work has been good, we get a treat. We get to go out and kick the soccer ball or throw horseshoes, play soccer. We also have recreational balls for the developmental clients. So we kind of accommodate everybody. ABC's Lisa Starr has the latest. The White House says it has been pushing for strong NATO's action all week long in the face of increasing provocation from the Bosnian Serbs. The final straw came early this morning at a U.N. weapons collection site. We hope it will have that effect. At the White House, spokeswoman Dee Dee Myers warned of serious consequences if the Bosnian Serbs do not accept the peace agreement. If the Bosnian Serbs continue to reject the proposal, a decision by the U.N. to lift the arms embargo could become unavoidable. In Sarajevo, sniper fire intensified after the airstrike. Two passengers on a city street car were wounded. The airstrikes apparently hit home. The Bosnian Serbs are returning all of the weapons that they seized.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647#t=3731.41,3844.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115764/file/219647/transcript/62498/annotation/37","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But if there is a repeat performance by the Serbs, the White House is warning of additional air attacks. This is Lisa Starr reporting live from the White House. Now back to you. Thank you, Lisa. The American warplanes, by the way, took off today from the Aviano Air Base in northern Italy. A group of Maryland pilots just returned home today from that very base. Members of the Maryland Air National Guard were welcomed home by their family and by their friends at BWI Airport. The Guard is flying support missions for United Nations peacekeepers. And though we can't confirm it, Maryland pilots may have been at the controls during today's bombing run. These are some of our friends that are still over there that are flying these missions. And we saw them just yesterday talking to you. But they're on standby ready for the U.N. troops if they need them. These are real missions. Every mission that we went on, we practice as we would employ in wartime, because you may be called upon to do that, as these guys did today, apparently. But the returning members of the Guard spent 28 days in the region. They describe the horrors they witnessed in the Bosnian civil war from the loss of human life to the massive destruction on the ground. It's just simply to look at how we're arresting people or are we taking advantage of the latest techniques that are out there and being utilized by the other departments? I guess the short of it is if what we're doing is outdated, then perhaps it needs to be changed. The department is specifically concerned about what's called felony arrests.
