With Richard Share. Pat. Warm weather with Bob south. Sports with Chris Ely. Pope John Paul, the second, spends his last day here in the United States and more than a quarter of a million young people camped out waiting for the pope's hillside mass, during which the pontiff evoked images of the Holocaust and ethnic cleansing, appealing to the world's young Catholics to repudiate the culture of death of abortion and euthanasia. We'll go live to getting started in Denver in just a few minutes. And Greg, we'll be reporting on how the Denver heat took its toll on thousands who came to see the pope today. And the heat's also been a problem in Baltimore this weekend. The weekend team's Kai Jackson has those details. It was supposed to be a day of fun in the sun, but the fun turned out to be more like misery for 27 people who passed out at yesterday's Afram celebration. Doctors say it's probably a change in weather that's caused it. People do get under sort of a false sense of security that when it seems to be cooler outside, that they tend to do more, especially with the contrast of the the hot July we had previously out of Druid Hill Park today. Kids play under a blistering sun that seems friendly until it's too late. Some people, they already know how to battle the elements. Best place to be when there's warm weather. And I'm just sitting here along with a friend of mine's, decided I'm going to practice. Much cooler in the park. This is a tripod. This is what we put our cameras on, on the days that I report. This is what I carry. It doesn't weigh a ton, but it's not exactly light either.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293#t=120.05,219.94"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293/transcript/62323/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But I even forget sometimes how quickly you can heat up out here. And doctors say that's the one thing you want to remember, that it doesn't take long to overheat in the sun. And that's why a little common sense will spare you a lot of pain later to help get the sun off your back. Doctors have a few heat tips. Drink plenty of water. Dress light. Avoid the midday sun and avoid alcohol. If you're starting to feel lightheaded or dizzy or thirsty or sweating profusely, it's time to take a break and get inside and get some shelter. And at the very least, if you can't get inside, make sure you're wearing the sensible amount of clothing and drink plenty of fluids. Just have a nice plastic cup of water and with ice and just kind of remain calm and not too much movement. And that should do it pretty well. It's good advice that most people can live by. Kai Jackson, Channel 13, Eyewitness News. Well, the big question, of course, could this be the beginning of another summer heat wave like the one we had last month? Well, I don't know, Richard. For the answer, we go to Dr. Bob Sacca, who's live at the Howard County Fair. Well, Pat, actually, in terms of deciding whether there's going to be another summer heat wave, we have no way of really knowing that our forecast for the next five days keeps us in temperatures that are in the low 90s. We got to 94 today in the downtown thermometer, 91 degrees more typical of the suburbs. And that's really not unusual for August. It's just a matter of keeping outdoor activities and physical exertion under control to avoid those heat problems. Of course, if the weather begins to warm up or change it, we'll be the first to tell you about it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293#t=220.57,313.57"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293/transcript/62323/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But right now, we have no way of saying that August is going to turn out to be an unusual month. It really is just a question of watching your behavior and not exerting yourself when you're outside. As you mentioned, we've got some pretty typical August weather to talk about. I'm live here on the grounds of the 48th annual Howard County Fair. That's going on. Let me bring in a full report a little bit later on right now. Back to you. Okay. Thank you, Dr. Bob. Another chance today to spread the word against drunk driving. Madd pedaled its message in a cycle for safe roads, bike tours, a very painful tour for some people. The weekend team's Melissa Sander shows us why. Oh. My sister Barbara was killed by a drunk driver on January 26th, 1985. Our son was murdered August 17th, 1991, by a drunk driver. It's a sad story to many have to tell, and they tell it in hopes of sparing others. It's especially tough right now because tomorrow would be his birthday. Birthday and he was. This happened on his birthday. I sometimes miss her more now than I did when she died because there's so many more things I want to share with her now that I can't. They learn to live with their loss. Eased by volunteering with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, supporting others, informing others, reminding others. This cycle for safe roads is a physically painful reminder for Pat O'Donnell. I was lucky because I saw the guy coming and I swerved out of the way, but he still hit me 18 years ago, damaging her leg. She's had seven surgeries, but it can't be repaired. It was before the drunk driving laws. He never got penalized. The laws are stricter and the awareness greater.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293#t=313.63,412.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293/transcript/62323/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yet in Baltimore County, one out of three drunk driving arrests is a repeat offender. That's something most young people don't consider. You don't ever think about drunk drivers talk about it. But I never really think about it like it would ever happen to me or anybody that I knew. But enough people did think about it to get out for the Sunday ride to peddle the message Madd members tried to get across. Their issue isn't drinking, but drinking and driving, which is not something that merely happens. It's a choice. You make a criminal act. You have to look at it both ways. We don't want them to kill anybody. We don't want em to kill themselves because they have families and friends, too. So we're going to suffer just as much for the weekend. Melissa Sander, Channel 13 Eyewitness News. Baltimore County has a new drunk driving work release and treatment facility for first and second time offenders. It should be operating before the end of the year. Well, as we mentioned earlier, as we did mention earlier in this newscast, Pope John Paul, the second, will soon be heading home to Rome. His visit to Denver drawing to a close. The weekend team's great starter has been with the pope in Denver and joins us live via satellite now. Greg, it's been quite a day there, hasn't it? Richard, they've had some big problems here. First of all, let's talk about the number of people they were expecting, about a half million people for the papal mass. And according to one priest, they had close to 750,000 people. The other major story still developing at this hour involves a number of people who got sick. Thousands of people were treated by doctors, but the papal visit did continue and the pope himself was very enthusiastic.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293#t=412.6,505.93"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293/transcript/62323/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Who were the true? Even through the night as far as the eye could see, hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world flooded into Cherry Creek State Park to listen to Pope John Paul, the second, as he said, mass. Young people. Got out here. From every part of the water. I greet you with affection and great joy. For the Baltimore delegation, it was something they've been anxiously awaiting for a year now, the chance to see the pope in person. Well, I was. I always wanted to meet the pope. You know, ever since I've heard about him and for me to actually get a chance to, you know, sit and see him live and hear him speak is a great honor and one that I really just can't explain. I didn't know what I was going to be feeling like, but all I could do was just cry. And I was like, Oh, God, who believe this? At a vigil Saturday night that attracted more than 250,000 people. Baltimore teenager Brandy Adams was among three people from Charm City who heard the pope. He's just a real person. I was just what I what I stood up. I could look him straight in the face and I could. And it was just like he was just there as he was person. This was pretty incredible. And the group I was in, we're kind of in a trance. We're going up there. And I think I don't know. I don't think it even hit anyone until we got back down. It turned out to be a very busy weekend for paramedics. And an estimated 6000 people were treated here at Cherry Creek State Park. He said, Meghan, why are you going to see the pope? And I said, You don't understand. It's not just the pope. It's being together and sharing your faith. A lot of enthusiasm surrounding this trip. We're going to show you one of the T-shirts they were selling here. This one went for around 18 bucks and they had everything here, including hats and pens and things of that nature. So a lot of people had a good time here. Back to you on TV. Bill in Baltimore. Greg, we appreciate you bringing the shirt back. Let us ask you this for just a few seconds we have left. We expect that to get to 90 degrees, may even do a few degrees better than that if you're headed out on the bay tomorrow. Here are your conditions. Southwest winds 5 to 10 knots, one foot waves. Thomas Point Lighthouse this afternoon reporting a bay water temperature of 80 degrees down the ocean. One of those hazy August days, 85 degrees on the beach. Water temperature a pleasantly cool 73. Here's the way it looks for tonight. A hazy, warm August, Sunday night overnight low, 72 degrees or so. And tomorrow it's going to be a warm one. We'll say 90 degrees. But the downtown seismometer could do another 4 or 5 degrees warmer than that. Hazy sunshine, hot and humid. And there's that late thunderstorm. Same dinner hour, too, into tomorrow night is what we're concerned about. And our five day forecast shows pretty much continuation of the same thing, 90 degrees, 90 degrees and then upper 80s with things perhaps drying out. That is the humidity decreasing somewhat. Thursday to Friday. So we had some concern with the heat problems today throughout the region, also in Denver, of course. But the thing to do is just be sensible. If you work outdoors, drink lots of fluid. Water is the thing. If you feel thirsty at all, even if you don't feel thirsty. Drink lots of fluids and you'll be just fine.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293#t=1225.55,1316.21"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115515/file/219293/transcript/62323/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Right now, from the fairgrounds, back to TV Hill. Well, let's get to the trade first part, because this is something the Orioles definitely need to do at some point in the stretch drive. Orioles pulling off a trade this afternoon. It's not going to be what we would classify as a blockbuster, but they do pick up third baseman Mike Pyle, Rouleau from the Minnesota Twins for a player to be named later. Pyle Rule is 33 years old, has batted 292 this season with three home runs and 23 RBIs. The fact of the matter is, folks, the Orioles need a bat, any bat, lefty or righty. It doesn't matter this much. Very evident from the results of the series in New York. The Yankees sweep, the Orioles shutting them out, and a good old fashioned pitching duel this afternoon. Ben McDonald certainly deserved a much better fate. After surviving a rocky first three innings, Ben settled down to go the route for the third time this season, only gave up seven hits, walked three, but struck out five. The Orioles ran themselves out of a promising chance in the fourth two on four. Cal pops it up in the short left fields. Deon James comes in to make the catch, then throws to second the double off.
