Probably shouldn't have done that. That's an old stereotype that sharks are horrible and they attack people and you shouldn't go into the water. Not everybody thinks that sharks deserve that bad rap. And one of the fellows who's convinced that they're really fine creatures altogether is the fellow who tracked down some of the sharks that are in the National Aquarium. He has a company called Shark Merriam. They're shark hunters with a gentle touch. They like their work. Let's go along on a trip. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water. Along comes another story about sharks. Well, this one isn't a Hollywood fantasy, where a huge great white jumps into boats to devour those on board. It's a story about real life sharks and a man who makes his living catching them. Jerry Clay collects large sharks for aquariums around the world. If you want a shark that's over five feet long, Jerry's company Shark Merriam is the only one in the world that can deliver. Well, I was in the Aquarius and getting bored, sitting in an aquarium and feeding fish. That's basically what got me into. She knows there's nothing in an aquarium over four foot on exhibit. And not till I got into the business and got bigger animals and. A typical day for Gerry and the shark. Harry and crew begins around sunset. Denise, Don and Jerry set out for a marathon in the Florida Keys to beat the Shark Line. Well, what happened is the more bait you have and the bloodier it is. They make a steady body, right? Jump one sharks and swim through. It will direct themselves toward the source of the oily smell comes from which to the bite in it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76300/file/162501#t=76.17,191.91"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76300/file/162501/transcript/38965/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And they got hooked. The baited long line stays out overnight. Hopefully in the morning we will find some sharks on it. Jerry keeps his sharks in a pan that looks like something out of a James Bond movie. Speaking of which, Jerry worked on Live and Let Die and several other Bond films as the shark trainer. I don't want to disillusion you, but most of those hair raising scenes with the sharks were done with animals under two feet in length. It seems like the human race is bound to be afraid for things to be happy. So one of the things to be afraid for is sharks might be some cases. There might be a lot of cases that sharks have bitten people. But I think of all the years that I've been working with sharks, I'd rather have worked with sharks and other animals because they're really not as bad as people say they are. Jerry is a man who likes to prove a point. He thought that the middle of the Shark Tank would be a great place to conduct an interview, to show it to you that there are really not the fishes, and that I can put my head or my feet or no arms very close to them and very slowly they will move away because they're probably afraid of me. I don't think they will taste very well when a shark really try to eat us. I think most of the attacks and bites that I've made are either, uh, unintentionally provocations by the person in the water and in murky water. It's probably accidental by the shark, but that they are there to swim around waiting for divers and swimmers. It's only the books and some movies, too, that are underwater.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76300/file/162501#t=192.84,307.41"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76300/file/162501/transcript/38965/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Photographer Nick Gallienus decided to join Jerry in the tank for some close ups. Okay. You want to try and stay? Okay. All right. The key to Shark Kariem success are the transport tanks that Jerry uses. They're equipped with a circulating pump, electrical system, massage boards, and a sophisticated filtration system. With these systems, Gerry can transport a shark anywhere in the world. That's a lot of primitive in a human mind, but it isn't that primitive when you look at the animal itself. We think something is primitive if it doesn't have any bones because we've got loads. And the shark doesn't. So it's considered a primitive animal, but it is not at all primitive. The long line is usually checked before sunrise, but because we needed the sunlight to photograph, we left to shore at daybreak. Unfortunately, this has caused the death of one of the sharks on the line. The first live catch is a small nurse shark. It's not considered to be what they might call a maneater, but it is very popular with aquariums because it's easily cared for. A very big nurse. Shark is next on the line. How big was it? Well, it was so big that the driver of the film, Cruise Boat, had to hop aboard to lend a hand. The shark's about nine feet long, weighs about £550. Some sharks are just too big even for Jerry to transport. I think we got use it as a bull shark. There's not a tank anywhere in the country. We can keep. Of the most dangerous shark out of the true sharks. I don't think anything is dangerous in the ocean. Shark wise, except you sort of enticed the animal to do it. But the most dangerous shark there is is a loan shark.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76300/file/162501#t=307.86,460.47"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76300/file/162501/transcript/38965/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I don't know how else to put it. I don't want to leave you with the impression that sharks don't attack people. They most certainly do. But they are not the aggressive, sinister creatures that Hollywood would lead you to believe. Most of the recorded shark attacks are cases of mistaken identity or divers error. Hopefully the more sharks the Gerry Clay and shark carrion put in aquariums around the world, the more the general public will learn about these mysterious creatures of the deep. So you can go back in the water, folks, and you can see more evening magazines. Stay with us for just a minute. All right.
