Bob Turk could be the weekend for hotdogs, apple pie and anything else. Perfect day to day. We've got a really nice weekend forecast. And I love hot dogs. I'm Sandra Pinkney and Health Watch. We have more information on that flesh eating disease that's been in the news. I know. And Chris Ely is at the ballpark for Jon Duran tonight. Hey, Chris. Hi. How are you? We're down here at the Oriole Park and Caviar's oil is getting set to start a three game series against the Chicago White Sox. And all is not good in the Orioles clubhouse. When I come back with a 5:00 sportscaster, I'll explain what I'm talking about. Sally. Okay, Chris. And here's a look at what else is coming your way next on Eyewitness News at five. You got to make sure you cook your beef real good. It would be hard to find a child who doesn't love hot dogs smothered in ketchup, mustard or relish. But now a study says if children eat 12 hot dogs a month, they have nine times the normal risk of getting leukemia. How pregnant are you? Seven months. And how often do you eat hot dogs? Like every other day. Every day. Another study released in the publication Cancer Causes and Control looked at pregnant women. It found if they eat more than one hot dog a week, the chance their child will contract leukemia is doubled. A third study linked father's consumption of hot dogs to their future child's cancer chances. A hot dog vendor is skeptical. You don't even know how big the study was or what conditions they were. Did they study everything else that they eat? I ate as well. 621 children with leukemia were used in the three studies, and researchers say more investigation is necessary. A health scare for parents learning about a new disease which literally attacks the flesh. Healthwatch reporter Sandra Pinkney is here to tell us more about this rare condition. We've been hearing so much about this and we've been alarmed. And I thought this was a good time to tell you a little bit more about it and how one Baltimore hospital treats this so called flesh eating disease, Sally. It's a condition called necrotizing fasciitis, and it's caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat. A warning some of the video you're about to see may be disturbing to some viewers. The bacteria group, a streptococcus can form toxins that literally eat away at connective tissues in the skin. Doctors at Maryland Shock Trauma treat the disease. It's just rare, uncommon condition. And that surgery is to remove the dead tissue that has formed. And sometimes there is reconstructive surgery. But those are in cases where it's gone on and on and on and on and left untreated. It literally pumps 20 times the amount of oxygen we normally breathe into that infected area, which retards the spread of that toxin, but encourages the growth of new cells and new blood vessels and new tissue. And it apparently works almost immediately. Great. Within a few days of using that, the you can see a tremendous change. Okay. All right. So we don't have to be unduly alarmed about this. Okay. Keep it in perspective. Thanks. And you'll see later with more health. Yes. In southwest Baltimore, complaints about a strong smell coming from one home prompted neighbors to call police. Alex Demetric is live on Ramsey Street to describe what police found inside that house. Alex. Well, Sally, it's no mystery. The people who live here on Ramsey Street, that's something very wrong and very foul was coming from one of the rowhouses here on the 1900 block. They've been smelling a very foul stench for the past few months. They've been complaining to police, the health department, the housing department. And late this afternoon, the city finally took action. Animal control officers took out dozens of animals in a house described as incredibly filthy, full of feces and alive with fleas and roaches. At least 14 dogs and puppies were removed, ten of them from the basement alone. You can't even come up here and unlock the store without having to go like this to get in and out of the house. When you hang your clothes on a line, you can smell it in your clothes. We can smell that when you turn the air conditioner on. We can't open our back door because you can smell it. We're starting to get a lot of flies and stuff and you could smell like dog feces. The complaints and this afternoon's raid came as a shock to the man who lives in the house. They say this place is full of animal waste and lots of fleas. And that's probably why it's been. But it's almost as if, right when spring arrives, if you remember, right at the end of March, March 21st, the official arrival of spring, the winter just turned. And the spring really has been very nice and just continues to be so great. You know, in years past, by this time, we've had some 90 degree sweltering days. And just remind us what summer's like. We've had very, very little of that so far this year. So a great weekend on tap. I mean, we've already given you the headline event. And now let's give you the details, starting with temperatures around the state at the moment. 79 degrees is what our thermometer shows right now. And although they are going to be around in the southeast, sometimes these things do drift to the northeast. Not a problem for us. We don't have showers in the forecast until possibly maybe Monday and more likely later on on Tuesday. So no problems at all for the weekend. We're going to have continually rising temperatures today. As I mentioned, 80 degrees. What we have right now is just about our high and we'll exceed that by a couple of degrees tomorrow. Here's how the satellite sees a gorgeous day for us. Clear skies for the most part. A few clouds drifting across southern Maryland. What looks like a front. But it really is. And this is just a collection of clouds out to the west, really in the center of this high. This high is strong enough, extensive enough that it will dominate our weather over the next couple of days. Certainly nice weather that we've had. Right now on the back side of the high with the clockwise circulation is drawing up some warmer air and that's what we'll see over the weekend. A temperature will rise as we progress through Saturday and Sunday. So tomorrow, look for a couple more degrees on the temperature scale, will say 81, 82 degrees for downtown. Most everybody will be in the 80s. Today, upper 70s is a more typical high and most locations on the beach are on the bay tomorrow. Variable winds 5 to 15 knots, one foot waves. Bay water temperature at 65 degrees down at the beach, sunshine. But it's going to be another one of those cool days where the air temps really gets into the low 70s and in the surf, even chillier. They carried away 14 dogs, plus some cats, rodents and wild rats from a house in the 1900 block of Ramsey Street. Waves of disgusting smells coming from the house have plagued the neighborhood for months now, and it's only preliminary information. She did more than just deliver the mail. When we moved here from Texas to open up our glassblowing studio at Sandwich Mill, we of course, moved to the village of Savage. And the first letter that we got in our mailbox was a welcoming letter from Jan Early. But 18 months later we wanted to buy a house. And we thought Jan probably knew which houses were available better than anyone. So we told her we were looking and she found their house for us. Jan went above and beyond the call of duty to to track me down in Upper Marlboro. I mean, this is nine years later. And she found me and she called me. And at her own time and expense, she had everything mailed to me. And because of her, I ended up with a little over $10,000. Post office was inaccessible, had a bunch of stairs. One of the most important systems in your automobile is your cooling system. And when your temperature gauge or light is in the hot zone, it is important for you to pull your car over in a safe manner. Now check your owner's manual. Some of the new aluminum engine cars ask you to idle at this time and not to turn your car off because engine damage can occur. Now, the most important thing at this time is to let it cool down. Never take a radiator cap off when the engine is hot and have a certified mechanic take a look at it. He'll use a pressure tester to make sure there are no leaks in the systems. Denise Coke is in the eye witness newsroom with a preview of some of them. Hi, Denise. Hi, Sally. On this 50th anniversary weekend of D-Day, it is a time for war and remembrance. But for one group of Maryland World War Two veterans, the memories are only about the battles on the front lines, but also the fight against segregation in the U.S. Army. At 6:00, you'll meet the Fighting 7060 first and hear their wartime diary. That's coming up in about 15 minutes. And now back to Sally and Sandra. Thanks, Denise. We're back with Sandra, who's getting ready for warm summer days out on the patio. That's right. Nice. What time should I be there? Sporty tonight. I'll be riding. We ran across this neat idea for converting a picture frame just like this into a tray that you can use for serving. Punch your dinner out on your patio. All you have to do is start with one of these picture frames every size that you wish you can buy at any five and dime. Any five and dime. Whatever fabric you wish. We'll just set that down, whatever fabric you wish. We chose something really colorful. And what we're going to do, Sally, is we're going to take this fabric and we're going to laminated. Have you ever done that before? I'm not going to show you how to do it on the air today because it's it comes complete with instructions. But you get these sheets of laminating material where you iron them at the same place, five and dime stores. You aren't it on the good side or the right side of the fabric. And there you have something that'll be protected against spills and things. Okay, so now we have our fabric, We have our frame. We've sprayed it with the glue. We've cut it. We've cut two pieces, one for the top side, one for the bottom side. And now we're going to actually glue it, press it and glue it down. So when you start on that side, we've already sprayed it because there are little rules about spraying in the studio. Make sure it's good and tight. The edges are good and tight. Okay. And we're going to fold it over the glue. Do you buy that Sprays? It comes in an aerosol can. That's why I don't know that much about it, because I couldn't bring it in here. It all has been pouring out of this row house and it has literally been so strong that it's been going through the walls and it's for some people to leave their homes. Now, the people here have been complaining for months to the owner, the police, the health and housing departments. And it wasn't until late this afternoon that the city finally took action. Animal control officers took out dozens of animals in a house described as incredibly filthy, full of feces and alive with fleas and roaches. At least 14 dogs and puppies were removed, ten of them from the basement alone. There were also a couple of cats, rabbits, birds and a large number of rodents. We don't have a number on that. But according to one animal control officer, there were even wild rats in cages being kept as pets by a woman and man living in the house. The smell is what brought this action. Neighbors have been complaining about it for months. It has been horrible here. The smell and the odor has been outrageous. You just can't sit here. You can't even come up here and unlock this door without have to go like this to get in and out of the house. When you hang your clothes on the line, you can smell it in your clothes. They had very good tanks. But although because Einstein's, the results are incalculable to the time of battle. The woman, Helen McCall, lost her leg in that accident. The park has been closed for renovations, but today's ceremony also marks its reopening. Brooke Flannery shark not only her mom and dad, but also her doctor when she opened her mouth. And there were the two bottom teeth, as you see in this video that her grandfather caught. The teeth have been removed now so they don't fall out and choke her. Mom is keeping them in a jar for posterity. There they are. Suzanne Collins is standing by live at the Warehouse Oriole Bug at Camden Yards, where this news, I would imagine, is causing controversy and concern Suzanne. That's right. You can imagine they're going to eat a lot of hot dogs here tonight. And parents may want to know what researchers found. One study at the University of Southern California found a relationship between the number of hot dogs, kids eight per month and whether they develop cancer. The researchers are thought to be credible to this. But they say it's very preliminary research and much more needs to be done to confirm it. It's pretty frightening if it's true. Every time you turn around, it's something known about the food being harmful. Chicken, beef. You got to make sure you cook your beef real good. A third study linked fathers consumption of hot dogs to their future child's cancer chances. A hot dog vendor is skeptical. You don't even know how big the study was or what conditions they were in. Did they study everything else that they eat? I ate as well. 621 children with leukemia were used in the three studies, and researchers say more investigation is necessary. A Sinai hospital cancer specialist agrees. He shouldn't call it malarkey, but nor should you panic. We should eat anything that we eat in moderation. We should all eat more vegetables than we're eating right now. Cut back on on meats, Particularly cured meats. But I wouldn't go home and empty out the freezer of all the hot dogs. And we just saw that this is upsetting to the general community, but what about the scientific community? How are they responding? Well, they're reserved. First, though, the University of Minnesota has a grant from the National Cancer Institute. And because of this study, they have decided to change some of their research and look at hot dogs. So that gives it a bit of credence. Also, though, critics say the study looked at people who already had cancer, children and asked their parents questions about what they'd eat and what the children at eat. And then they said that's not a terribly dependable way to do it because they may not recall properly. They say perhaps instead next time they should track kids and their parents who don't have it to see if they get it after eating hot dogs. All right. Very interesting. Thank you, Suzanne. So far, by the way, there has been no reaction from hot dog makers. It's been called the mysterious flesh eating disease. It was recently reported in the British tabloids that a report of it turned up in Washington state. Healthwatch reporter Sandra Pinkney is here to help us understand what's really going on. It's called necrotizing fasciitis, necro meaning dead tissue.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410#t=4734.58,4822.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410/transcript/71555/annotation/47","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And there's more. It's been called the mysterious flesh eating disease. We went to a shock trauma to find that patients with this condition have been treated successfully using antibiotics, surgery and oxygen. Be prepared. Some of the pictures in this story are graphic. We've seen the pictures of the mysterious flesh eating disease in Britain and more recently, the child who developed it through an infected chickenpox infected chicken right here. So they had to cut that out. And then they cut me all the way down. But this child had is not so mysterious at all. It's called a necrotizing infection. What it really means is that the chickenpox caused a skin wound that opened up and the infection was able to get in. And then it started growing in the tissue that had been damaged. This necrotizing infection is caused by group a streptococcus which causes strep throat. But in this case, the bacteria forms toxins which begin eating away at the flesh. Stopping the spread is crucial. The spread of the toxin is stopped with penicillin or some of the other more recent antibiotics that they've been looking at. And we think that the hyperbaric oxygen has a great deal to do with that. The oxygen is administered here in the hyperbaric chamber, the high concentration of oxygen 20 times the normal amount works by destroying the toxin and keeping it from spreading. It also stimulates the body to form new cells, new blood vessels. The first treatment last 90 minutes, three times a day. Then the treatment tapers off as the body heals almost immediately. We've seen this in a number of the patients that we've treated here that the turnaround is very quickly. Sometimes the symptoms can be subtle, but once it starts spreading, there's severe pain and discoloration of the skin.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410#t=4824.1,4932.38"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410/transcript/71555/annotation/48","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Blisters, fever, confusion, then shock. But it's doctors obviously have. Is this fatal? Can it be fatal? It can be left untreated. And that was the point. Left untreated, it can be fatal. But the line of defense first is penicillin, then oxygen, and then surgery in some cases. All right, Sandra, thank you. What's in a name? Well, Shakespeare asked the original question, but Baltimore County voters are now asking it of a man who wanted to be a state delegate. In his commentary tonight, Michael Luskin says you can't tell the candidates without a name, rank and Social Security number. Larry Carson of The Sun dug this story up about a political wannabe who apparently is never going to be going back to California in his campaigning moments. Jay Kim was calling himself Diebold, Jason Kim and claiming to be a conservative Republican running for the House of Delegates from 2000 while on leave from studies at Johns Hopkins Medical School. In all those claims is only an occasional glimmer of truth. Hopkins says he's never been a student there. He had a phony Social Security number and phony birth records. And the exciting thing is that it's 144 year old mansion and the great grandson is coming this weekend. The original owner to see what it looks like. Beautiful place. And it's a friendly place. That sounds good to me. Very friendly. Very friendly. Thank you. You're welcome. Thank you. Well, if you'd like to help support the fight against Aids, this is a good weekend to start. Thousands will be marching Sunday in the Aids walk to raise money for hero and other Aids organizations. One of the organizers is Carol Hylton, the director of the Wood Clinic and Epidemiology Study on HIV at Hopkins University. She says one of the reasons she marches each year is to raise awareness. Awareness that HIV is here. HIV destroys lives. HIV is going nowhere and that people are at risk. The rise is in women. It's scary that we see younger and younger people becoming infected. And when people think it's never going to happen to them. Surprise, surprise, it does. WJC is a co-sponsor of the Aids Walk if you'd like to participate. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. That's in the morning. A course Sunday at Garland Field at Hopkins University. Door to door, according to Chris. I mean, excuse me to Bob, he's saying. But Tuesday before in a rain. That's right. And hopefully that's good news for the Orioles because they got to take advantage of an important series.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410#t=5910.37,6013.89"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410/transcript/71555/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Right, Chris? Well, we put it this way. If you get to sit next to Cal Ripken in the dugout, you only get to sit next to Carrigan for half the game because the other half he's out here is shortstop. Well, then forget it. Very clever guy. Cal Ripken. Well, that's the way they play the game. At least that's how they tell me they play the game. Orioles in the White Sox getting set for a three game weekend engagement here at Oil Park in Camden Yards. This homestand started out probably as bad as bad as you can expect. The homestand to start with the Orioles losing three out of the first four against the Detroit Tigers. But then they're able to come back in an afternoon game and win the final game of that series. As the Orioles got ready to taking batting practice today. They could be kind of heartened by the fact that the bats kind of came to life in the last two games of the series. They came back in the in game three and then they scored 11 runs yesterday. However, there's some some degree of concern because the Orioles have certainly dropped a lot more games than they've won. However, according to Cal Ripken, there's plenty of time to right the ship. With 100 games left to play. We'll get rolling. We've had a couple of a couple of injuries, but the best thing you can do is go out there and try to play each and every day.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410#t=6155.04,6235.23"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136704/file/253410/transcript/71555/annotation/60","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And and and and come August or September and look up and see where you are. I want to talk just briefly about yesterday's game, the rookie coming up from Double-A ball. And he was just magnificent after kind of surviving a shaky start. But he looked like a seasoned veteran out there. Don't believe don't believe that he was a little bit nervous out there on that mound. You could just I could imagine myself in that same situation. And I'm sure you could. You know, I can't imagine myself. Right. Right, Right. To take the mound in an important game like that against a team like the Tigers who can be as potent as anybody in the league with their lineup. And he went out there with a poison. You know, if you're Johnny Oats, you've got probably one of the hardest hit and third baseman in the league right now in Leo Gomez. And there is just no way that Chris can get back in there when. I mean. I know that Chris are supposedly had related to saying that Leo was no Mike Smith. Right. But Leo can be Mike Smith. Right now, he has been over the last three weeks. But I really don't think that. And it's just going to take time. He's going to get back in the lineup and he's going to be a big contributor this. Even with a 30% chance, Mrs. Maresca says that she may wait a year or more before trying the procedure. Well, if you have ever opened your umbrella on a windy, rainy day, you know the risk a gust of wind can turn it inside out. When one product promised a solution, we decided to let Dick buy it. Yeah, this was a rather expensive solution because it was 30 bucks, which is, I guess a lot more. Buy umbrellas every day. But. But it's a lot. It's a bit pricey. Yeah. Well, the theory, of course, on this is that if it is built right, it will hold its shape and it won't end up in shreds. But we needed some wind to test it out, so we headed to College Park. Dr. Joel Barlow's team at the Glen L Martin Wind Tunnel usually test far more sophisticated equipment than our $30 umbrella. But its engines could generate the gust needed to see if the built in baffle really would prevent this umbrella from turning inside out in winds of up to 40 miles an hour. Would most umbrellas would the umbrella that I get for 599 over at Woolworth's snap apart? Absolutely it would it would on it would go it would reverse. Let me ask you this.
