JS ETV Baltimore This is Eyewitness News with Richard Share. Sandra Pinkney. Weather with Bob Sopko. And sports with Chris Healy. It used to happen back when number 22 pitched for the Baltimore Orioles and it happened again today. Hall of Fame delayed because of rain. This was the day that Jim Palmer and thousands of his fans have waited for for a long time. Jim's induction into baseball's coveted Hall of Fame will have to wait until tomorrow morning. Well, Chris Ely has the story of the rainout in Cooperstown. Can you imagine how disappointed all these Orioles fans are being up in Cooperstown, having to stand around with umbrellas? Very disappointing indeed. Jim Palmer, the greatest pitcher in Orioles history, was to join the best who ever played in the game of baseball at the Hall of Fame today. But a steady rain drenched the huge Baltimore contingent on hand to witness the event. And baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent decided to postpone the ceremonies until tomorrow.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451#t=124.47,251.05"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451/transcript/62312/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The official word came around 230 about the time ceremonies to induct Joe Morgan and Jim Palmer were scheduled to start. Even though many fans left disappointed, Jim Palmer acknowledged the legion of Orioles fans who came to take part in his day. You got to give those people from Baltimore a lot of credit. They were the ones with the majority of the umbrellas today. So they anticipated, as always, kind of like what our organization did, that it may rain here. I never thought that if we had two beautiful days here, got in here on Friday, that the rain would ever be part of the story today. Like a rainout during his career. The extra day of waiting has given Palmer a chance to think over his feelings prior to his big day. I thought I was going to be pretty cool till I walked out there and I figured, you know, Joe and I figured that on a day where all these people spend maybe their whole, you know, I mean, maybe money they spent all year to come up to Cooperstown to be here and be part of the celebration, not only for us, but just for baseball. I think we should go out there and we walked out there in the rain and just kind of wave to everybody. And all of a sudden, I think I got in touch with how I'm going to feel tomorrow. And I have problems with that. I mean, on the day that I retired, the day I got released or retired, I mean, I had gone through to come to the ballpark. I had gone another way, having to go by the first apartment I ever lived in in Baltimore. And all of a sudden you see that it maybe not your life in Baltimore is ending, but your life as a baseball player is ending.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451#t=255.31,333.58"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451/transcript/62312/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And I think I will get in touch with those emotions. In other news, this was the day Iraq had promised to pull its troops out of Kuwait. There is, however, no evidence to suggest this has happened. This lack of honesty has infuriated an already angry President Bush. This afternoon, the president blasted Iraq in his strongest language since Thursday's invasion. And he's just arriving at the White House from Camp David. The president pulls no punches. He lied once again. They said they were going to start moving out today and we have no evidence that they're moving out While the Iraqis claim they are pulling their troops out of the region, their troops have been spotted within a mile of the Saudi Arabian border and a puppet government has been installed in Kuwait. There will be no puppet regime that will be accepted by any countries that I'm familiar with. And there seems to be a united front out there that says Iraq, having committed brutal, naked aggression, ought to get out. Bush is calling on the Arab states to unite in their condemnation of what he calls the vicious aggression against Kuwait. But for now, the Arab response appears to be more talk than action. Well, I was told by one leader that I respect enormously. I believe this was back on Friday that that they needed 48 hours to find what was called an Arab solution. The violence continued here at about midnight last night in the 2100 block of Berkeley. That's when three people were shot and left in the street. For the longest time, folks have stuck to the tenets that they don't talk about the violence. They don't talk about the shootings. But that may be changing. This congregation was started back in 1890 with just 12 members in a frame church not far from where the present building stands. Although they were remembering the past today, most looked ahead to the future and to the children who are the future of this wonderful church. It is important to instill in them positive values. It is important for them to carry forth into the community values that that aren't just kind of historical fundamentals, but but fundamentals that mean something and change the way that they live in the world. And as part of the anniversary celebration, the congregation hopes to dedicate a stained glass window in the balcony of their church. I couldn't get much of them up in Cooperstown today, unfortunately, because the rain stopped all that, too. As we mentioned at the top of this newscast, the ceremonies honoring the newest of baseball's Hall of Fame, Jim Palmer and Joe Morgan were rained down in Cooperstown and they've all been rescheduled for tomorrow morning. The light showers in the morning developed into a steady downpour by mid-afternoon. Umbrellas were mandatory equipment for the hundreds of Orioles fans who made the pilgrimage to Cooperstown to see Palmer take the stand and acknowledge his entrance into baseball's shrine. Unfortunately, on this day, the elements won over ceremony and Fay Vincent announced to the heartbroken crowd that they'd have to wait until tomorrow, attend to see and hear their hero. Palmer and Joe Morgan will try it again tomorrow morning up in Cooperstown, of course. That's seeing as though or hoping that the elements going to get control of that situation. Tonight, 9000 B.G. and eight customers lose power as lightning strikes. And when it hit, it did hit hard and caused flooding on many Baltimore streets. Drivers had a tough time with all of the water caused by these heavy rains. Eyewitness News photographer Jim Smart spotted these burning wires off the 44th Street Bridge and called the fire department. The wires lit up the rainy night skies. It could have been a lightning strike here, they say. And on Park Heights Avenue, this is one of the many crashes that happened during the downpours tonight. And for the short period at around 1027 this evening, Channel 13 was hit by lightning and knocked off the air for about ten minutes. Bob Turk has been watching the radar throughout the evening and has the latest Bob. Thank you, Richard. The first busses rolled into New York Friday night. Aboard were hundreds of Marylanders looking like minor leaguers at the end of a road trip. We have reared up down over the mountains, through the woods and scenic tours of the eastern United States. On a beautiful country goes to nowhere. I mean, listen. There is also support from other countries, including Japan, which is the largest consumer of oil from the Middle East. Right now, Defense Secretary Dick Cheney is flying to Saudi Arabia, where he is expected to ask the Saudi government for permission to open its air bases to U.S. planes. Yes, We'd all like to win it if you play today's lottery. Here are tonight's numbers drawn. The pick three winner was eight. Two won. The pick four winner was 6036. The panel is weighing 14 counts of perjury and drug possession against the mayor. Well, going to the hospital can certainly be a frightening experience if you don't speak the language. Well, as I was telling you, we had a lot of rain tonight. That's right. I never had a washout for Ben McDonald. Yeah, and probably well, it's hard to tell when it was a good thing or a bad thing, really. Well, when all is said and done, I want to show you why right now. Rookie pitcher Ben McDonald didn't get much of a chance to become the first oil to pick up four straight wins in his first four starts. The monsoon rains washed out the finale of the Royals Royals series, but maybe it was a pretty good thing. Top of the first inning, George Brett settled in with two out against Kansas City. Watch him promptly take a pitch from McDonald and send an Air Express to right field. First home run given up by McDonald would have been homerun number nine for Brett and a one nothing lead for the royals. But then the rains came and they came in a hurry and they came a lot before the Orioles could bat in the first inning. The Tarp came out on the field and after an hour and six minute wait, this game was called. No makeup date has been arranged since it was Kansas City's last trip to Baltimore. The game probably will be tacked on at the end of the season if it ends up meaning anything. For all of us at Marvel of the pitching career of Jim Palmer, this was to be the day we were to share in his pride and emotion and his induction to baseball's Hall of Fame.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451#t=3089.55,3172.58"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451/transcript/62312/annotation/31","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Unfortunately, it rained on the Palmer Parade up in Cooperstown and the ceremonies had to be put back to tomorrow morning for the all was prepared. Jim Palmer The rain came as a real big surprise that it may rain here. I never thought that if we had two beautiful days here, got in here on Friday, that the rain would ever be part of the story today. But I think I'll be able to have it. And you know, it's just great. I teach great to spend time with some of the Hall of Famers because I'm I want to make a comeback, Peter. A comeback. Oh, don't rule it out completely, folks. For now, the only comeback Palmer will make is back to the platform in Cooperstown, where hopefully he'll be formally entered into the Hall of Fame tomorrow morning. Other baseball this evening had the Mariners hosting the twins under the Dome in Seattle. And this game had one of the most harrowing moments ever for the Mariners pitcher Billy Swift. Bottom of the first inning, Seattle scores three times off. Alan Anderson. Ken Griffey groundball right side through for the base hit. Hal Reynolds comes around the score. It's one nothing Seattle. The next batter was Jeffrey Leonard. And watch Jeffrey going to have a big swing here, but kind of a little dinky hit to the Gap. Henry Cano comes around and scores. It was three off in Seattle after one Minnesota fourth. Gary Guy had a line drive up the middle, gets Bill Swift Square, the right side of the forehead. This is ugly, folks. Swift goes down in a hurry. But there is good news. He never lost consciousness despite this terrible blow. He was taken to a hospital for observation x rays.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451#t=3173.24,3255.92"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114893/file/218451/transcript/62312/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Seattle ended up winning the game four to nothing. In San Francisco, the Dodgers put it to the Giants. And how top of the first two on base for Eddie Murray against Rafael Novoa. We all remember that swing and the results, a three run shot. Number 17 for Murray three, nothing Dodgers. Then in the fourth inning, Murray up again. Same pitcher, same pitch, same result. Another three run. Tater number 18 Dodgers clobber the Giants 12 to 6. Well, there was preseason excitement to be had in London the day when the New Orleans Saints and the L.A. Raiders squared off an old Wembley Stadium for American style football. We're going to pick this up in the second quarter of a scoreless game. Saints with the ball and the Raider three decide the game on fourth down pitch out to Ruben Mays. The sweep carries Mays into the end zone seven up in New Orleans. Fourth quarter now, L.A. down 17 to 3. But wait, Punter Kevin Brown gets stuffed in the end zone by Elvis Patterson. Raiders pick up a defensive TD, but that was it As far as the score was concerned. New Orleans wins the fifth annual American Bowl, 17 to 10 in golf, some spectacular shots in a senior event at Charlotte. The old guys haven't lost a step when it comes to this racket. In Memphis, John Cook and Tom Kite battled through the final round plus one overtime hole to settle the St Jude Classic. This is Cook on number 14. A little back door action on this birdie putt going to hit the back of that hole and go right in there on that hole. Cook took a one stroke lead but there was no denying Tom Kite on this day on 17. Kite still trailed by one. But this marvelous shot sets up a short putt for the birdie. And once again, they were tied at 67. 15 under par. First over from hole was number 13. Kites approached less than 15ft from the hole. And the veteran sinks this birdie attempt to win his 14th tournament. And he runs his career earnings to more than $6 million. Vicki and Stephen Kessler have delivered six of their dozen at Valley View Hospital in Colorado. And officials there thought they should do something nice for them.
