Maria Broom. Hi, I'm Anderson, and welcome to Channel 13 Evening Magazine. I got some inclination of how popular Maria Broom is in this community. When I first came to Baltimore, people would come up to me in the Channel 13 truck and ask, Where is Maria? Well, tonight we're going to find out what Maria Broom has been doing since she left the Channel 13 NEWSROOM. She's running a dance studio, among other things. But first, here's Dave to tell you about the rest of this evening's program. Hi. We'll also be meeting Priscilla Hill this evening. She's a 16 year old ice skater who is quite good and hopes to go to the 1980 Olympics and take home some Olympic gold. A lot of people think that she is the next Dorothy Hamill. And you'll be meeting Priscilla in just a little later on evening. Also coming up in our home department, Dr. Michael Fox tells us that it's important that we have regular checkups for our dogs and that they get all of the shots that they need. Well, our Charles goes to our place. That's the biggest nightclub in Baltimore for country and Western music lovers. Dr. Jim Roscoe in our health department, continues his series on alcoholism. And tonight, he gives us some self-help therapy for problem drinkers. And Bob Smith goes to the Columbia Mall and finds a great shop for chocolate chip cookie lovers. Now, here again is a mayor with Maria Broom. Maria Broom has spent years as a television news reporter, many of them here at WJC, most recently as a consumer reporter and a cultural arts editor. She's put that behind her now and she's concentrating on her first love, which is dancing.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748#t=64.44,158.1"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748/transcript/61542/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"She owns two dance studios right here in Baltimore. She has her own radio program and she teaches a class at Antioch College. We might think that that's a lot for a young woman to take on, but I think you'll find that Maria Broom has energy to spare. Flex 2.1. And I told my mother within the past month or so that this was the first time in my life that I legitimately felt like I could say if somebody said, And what do you do or what are you? I could say, I am a dancer. I am a dancer. And that is that is what I do. I do it 6 to 7 days of the week, whether it's actually teaching it or whether it's here in my house, I, I dance so much more now, not just in the classroom, but here in my home. Because as I'm constantly at home in these mirrors and his music on all the time, I'm constantly trying to achieve the movements that I have felt that I have wanted to achieve for a long time. And I'm finally getting to see it. And that feels so good. I mean, it's almost it feels like a little girl sometimes. Mommy, look, I am a dancer. I can do this. Nowadays, Maria has plenty of time to dance. She decided the television wasn't going to be her life, and she left WJC last fall. At home, she looks over material for her half hour radio show on station WEAA. The show is primarily dealing with the arts, but the main reason I called it the Arts for Black Blacks, which includes not just the creative and performing arts, but the other arts of communication, survival and getting through the day. I can actually get into those areas.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748#t=158.88,265.06"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748/transcript/61542/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"My third show dealt with education. We just talked about what's being offered in the school system for black kids and all kids. So on the radio show, I'm just able to just bring in a lot more issues that I think are important that I never got a chance to do on television. The biggest lesson I learned spending four and a half to five years in television is finding out how important my time is versus somebody else's money. Now, that sounds like very maybe a very lofty thing to say. It's like, sure, Maria, once you've had it, that's very easy for you to say. That isn't easy. That is not an easy lesson to learn. I mean, you know, there are people who will pay you to do many things that you can do, but it will take your time. Do you miss it much? People ask me that. How can you give up the money, the fame, the fortune to that at all of television to teach dance? It's not an easy decision. It was not an easy decision, but it was an important decision. And as far as I'm concerned, the most correct decision I have ever made in my life. And it'll take a minute to make sure I get all my bills paid. It'll take a minute to maintain, you know, that which I have now. But if it works and it's working correctly, you know, and stays, I keep my. And it keeps me above water. That's the main thing. You're a practicing vegetarian, aren't you? One day I just decided I'm just not going to eat red meat anymore. And within two weeks, I mean, I looked in the mirror and saw a difference, and that was just stopping the red meat.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748#t=266.62,357.4"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748/transcript/61542/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Then about six months later, I just got out of poultry. So when I found that out and then I cut out the rest of it, I cut out fish, I got a sugar, I got a white flour, I cut out dairy products, cheese, eggs, and, uh, became a strict vegetarian. I couldn't believe the way I felt. I tell people now, I still go into mirrors and look at myself just to make sure that my skin is still as clear. I couldn't believe the fact that I no longer felt that I ever had to wear makeup. I remember always thinking. I remember hearing people say, Boy, I wish I knew at 18 what I know now. I am 28 years old and I have the knowledge of a 28 year old and maybe more. And yet I have seen my body and my health go back to that of an 18 year old. And I thought it was just me in the way I felt. I can't believe how many people say, you look so young. You know, you look 21. 22. Keep the neck long open. Born in Baltimore, Maria worked in television in Miami. She worked on the cast of the musical Hair. And she spent some time studying in Europe. She calls herself a crusader for good nutrition for the rights of black people, among other issues. The list of her interests and goals goes on and on. One suspects that she'll be as successful at all of them. I see these young girls and it's so important for them, mainly because they are black. They they achieve such a sense of being able to carry themselves beautifully. And they feel it. And you can see that it's sometimes their mothers will kill me because it's almost to the point of arrogance.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748#t=358.21,452.55"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748/transcript/61542/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But it's a good kind of arrogance. It's a healthy arrogance. And so many young kids, I mean, this goes black and white, especially right now, never get in their schooling or their extracurricular activities. They never get that sense of feeling good as a female or feeling healthy about their bodies or being able to deal with their bodies, whatever they want a head up that makes that leap. Watch the finger. But I think that she and I work these girls hard and they get a sense of really, really moving their muscles, all of them. They know what pain is. They know what time it is. They know what tears and frustration are, but they love it. And you can you can see it, But, hey, hey, you know, sitting here watching Maria's dance class, she's a very good teacher. A lot of people tell me they miss her. Reports in the nightly news. But I think with her ability as a dance teacher, as a dancer, and with a radio program as well as her dreams, Maria Broom has much more to offer. We have much more to offer right after this break. So stay with us. It's a birthday party this evening for Wilhelmina Truman. She's 85 years old. And at Bowie racetrack in the clubhouse room. I'm Lynn Anderson, and welcome to Channel 13 as Evening magazine. Wilhemina Truman is very special to the people around Bowie. She's been here around the racetrack since it opened in 1914, and she's the oldest horse trainer in North America. We're going to have that story for you. But first, here's Dave to tell you about the rest of this evening's program. Hi. Also this evening, we'll be reminiscing about the music of Jim Croce. Jim Croce has not been with us.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748#t=453.0,636.73"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748/transcript/61542/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He was killed in a plane crash four years ago, but his music continues to sell very well. We'll go to the place where he was born in South Philadelphia with some friends of his. And we'll we'll see, you know, recording of Jim Croce actually performing some of his music. Also coming up this evening in our evening department's chef, tell our heart shows us how to cut meats in such a way that they remain tender. Laura Charles has some information about the Reisterstown community production of Showboat and some other things that are coming up this weekend. And our health department, Dr. Jim Roscoe, finishes his series on alcoholism by telling us we have to understand alcohol and how to drink sensibly. And Bob Smith takes us to a place with a dozen different cheesecakes in the Columbia Mall. First here again is La Nina at Boy Racetrack. As you know, the issue of mandatory retirement for senior citizens has become a very controversial one all over the country. But the folks here at Maryland's boy racetrack seem to value age and experience. And at age 85, Wilhemina Truman has both. She is valued for not only her ability as a horse trainer, but she's treated like a queen. Now. Hey, Frank, we've got to get going on. Wilhelmina truman has been involved with racing since 1913. That's the year that she became the bride of trainer Elmer Truman. For 50 years, the couple trained and raised horses together all over the East Coast. 15 years ago, Elmer passed away. That was when Wilhelmina, then age 70, decided to get a trainer's license of her own. Wilhelmina could not bear to retire. Now, at age 85, Wilhelmina is an institution at BUI Racetrack, and each year, her birthday is a track event, a celebration of respect for this woman's contributions.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748#t=636.89,745.57"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748/transcript/61542/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Oh, Lord, look at all this cake. Happy birthday today. I couldn't what I did to make a motion that everybody wants to see. Well. You're going to do the honors. You know you. No, you won't. No. Know, all the years that go with a big happy birthday. Happy birthday. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear me. Happy birthday to you. Here's the cake. I'm not happy. It's kind of unusual, I think, that that a woman of your age is still working as hard as you do. Tell me. Tell me what you do. You get up early in the morning and. Oh, my goodness. Yes. I don't I don't know. I don't even know that I'm getting up and get up and get brush and get going. Well, if you don't do anything, I'm just sitting around, you know, and I can't see that. I'm just sitting around there moping and doing this and doing that. Get yourself and get to work. And that's the thing to do is get yourself ready to go to work. So you're never going to retire? Oh, no, not me. I am not. I retire. I won't be here. No, that's true. I don't never think about retiring this. That's nothing for me. I could go out there and do a lot of work right out there and enjoy it out in the track. Yeah. The world with all that stuff is out there. Wherever there's something to do, I'll go ahead and do it. I don't. I don't mind that. A lot of mind over a little bit of work. Oh, that's this and that. You don't look back. I never looked back one day. That's right. I won't even know where that road is.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748#t=747.4,876.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114011/file/216748/transcript/61542/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'm sure I. Well, you'll have to take your age today and the daily down to five. I'll make it five and eight five, and I'm not going to do it in reverse. The feature race on Wilhelmina's birthday is traditionally dedicated to her. The ninth race is called The Running of the annual Queen Wilhelmina Purse. Wilhelmina will present the winner with a silver trophy. This ceremony in the winner's circle completes a day of tribute to Mrs. Truman. A woman who could be at home knitting but instead keeps on working. How do you feel about that? Having a race named after you is a pretty exciting no. No one's out there. But it's in your honor. Yes, but you see, some people don't even know who I am. Down along the inside my car, driving around, moving on the outside. Back in 1967, a horse entered in this race had been trained by Wilhelmina herself. The horse was called Bronze Bout, running a 19 two one long shot. But as fate would have it, Bronze Bolt defied the odds and won. Wilhelmina couldn't very well award the trophy to herself. And so the track's general manager stepped in to present the award to Mrs. Truman. Which one are you with this thing? I don't know. Going on had a chance about you. I don't know. Maybe I ought to be putting up, I guess. Maybe down. Well, you know how old I am. Yeah, they. Everybody got told today you couldn't keep it a secret. What difference does it make?
