We'll look back at his life and controversial career. An elderly Baltimore man is murdered in his home. And by George, there's another one here in Maryland. You're watching WJZ TV with Baltimore's most watched 6 p.m. newscast in real time, closed captioning for the hearing impaired. This is Eyewitness News at six. The greatest in support. Spiro Agnew, a man few would praise in life, is now being remembered kindly in death. Agnew died last night of undiagnosed acute leukemia. The man who once led the state of Maryland had been spending the summer in his Ocean City condo. The former state governor and vice president of the United States was 77 years old. Our team coverage begins with George Bauman, who covered Spiro Agnew career from the start and watched as it first rose like a rocket and then came crashing down like a rock. Spiro Agnew had just become Baltimore County Executive when I met him, and little did he or I know then that he'd become governor of Maryland and Vice president of the United States, or within six years as governor, during the turbulent years of social change and civil strife, including the Baltimore riots. He took a hard line against civil disobedience and lawlessness to those few who loot and burn. We shall show no sympathy, nor will we tolerate those few who would take the law into their own hands. Agnew's law and order demeanor caught the attention of Richard Nixon, who selected him as his running mate. They were elected twice, and midway in the second term, the sky fell in on Spiro Agnew in federal court in Baltimore. He pleaded no contest to a charge of tax evasion and resigned.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136439/file/253031#t=3.21,113.78"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136439/file/253031/transcript/71244/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I categorically and flatly denied the assertions that have been made by the prosecutors with regard to their contentions on bribery and extortion on my part, to the end of his days. I asked him why the image I have among great masses of the American people. That's why I want them to give me the fair shake of reading this book and making up their own minds about the case. Do you think the day will come when you you will regain the credibility you think you've lost? I don't. I really don't know. I think it's it's unlikely that I will ever regain the credibility I had before this happened. Two years ago, Spiro Agnew made a rare public appearance attending the funeral of Richard Nixon, with whom he hadn't spoken since the day he resigned 20 years before. And now Spiro Agnew was dead and perhaps supporting his friend Helen Bentley. The misfortunes that came his way should be allowed to die with him. George Bauman, channel 13 Eyewitness News. Spiro Agnew is survived by his wife, Judy, four children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. In Annapolis tonight, Agnew State House colleagues are exchanging stories and memories. Our team coverage continues with Dick Goldman, who joins us live now from the state capital with reaction to the death of Spiro Agnew. Dick. Hi, Vic. Two in particular were very quiet during the public life of Spiro Agnew, but you'll hear from them tonight. Spiro Agnew was known as a man whose words and phrases could easily inflame. Many of his words were written by Cynthia Rosenwald, the speechwriter who followed him from the statehouse to the doorstep of the white House. I hope the wonderful things he did as governor of Maryland will be remembered. It was her job to pen his thoughts. But she has historical reminders of his input, the corrections and additions that made Spiro Agnew, Spiro Agnew, nice speeches are grammatical changes. And then he put his little effete snob or rotten apple zinger in my mouth. That was his personality, and she knew the personal side of the vice president. So I remember one day he needed to call someone. He was vice president elect. And I said, I'll put in the call, and I put it in and they said, who's calling? I said, the vice president. And the woman said, of what? And we looked at each other and said, the line of state. Agnew's battles with the press, usually over his words, were legendary. The job of dealing with them fell on Jack Chirac. His press secretary, Lyndon Johnson, told him one time, do not read the newspapers. He said, do not read the newspapers. He said, if you do, you'll lose all your perspective. There's no question about working. He was a perfectionist. He expected it of his staff. He hired people on that basis. I think that that is probably one of the worst crises the man had to bear. He did so much. He did so much for Goldman County. He did so much for the state. He did an outstanding job as Nixon's lightning rod. He served and again, I mean, World War two vet many, many medals, commendations. He served his country and he served it well. You know, it wasn't too long ago I was down in Ocean City one afternoon having, lunch at a restaurant down there. And, the former vice president came over to me just to say hi, wanted to introduce himself. And he, as everybody knows, I had his summer place in Ocean City. And, you know, he, just wanted to talk for a minute, but what he wanted to talk about was George Bauman. He had talked about the fact that George had covered him so long through the good, through the bad, and the respect that he had for George. And I, of course, tried to talk the vice president into an interview. I figured it was rare as the opportunity to get to talk to him, but he wanted to continue to maintain the low profile. He said it was in the book. If you want to know what happened, simply read the book. But I thought it was an interesting aside to spend a little time with him and listen to him. Regale. After the vice president left, Jack said he needed some time to be with himself. He was a very private man. The vice president again needed to be with his family, but he did maintain the contact with him. The vice president, former vice president would come in to Ocean City every year around the end of May and then leave toward September to go back to California. But, he stressed the fact that he like to keep up those relationships. Call the people. How soon can you be here? About two minutes. They track down individual species of mosquito which bite humans and carry the encephalitis virus. They've caught tens of thousands of these bloodsuckers using special traps. It's like mostly Culex in here. But so far, they found only one mosquito carrying the virus. These go back to the lab. The, mosquitoes are all sorted out, and certain species which are known to be carriers of the disease are taken to, the diagnostic lab where they're subjected to an enzyme analysis to see if they're carrying the virus. But soon, these clear skies will be filled with birds flying south from the heavily infested New England states. And those birds will, in all likelihood, be bringing virus, with them. And mosquitoes that are here can feed on those migrating birds and possibly transmit it on to people or livestock. Of course, the, the mosquito larvae are in the water, and we're going to go out here in this wetland area and see if we can find some mosquito larvae. Spiro Agnew pleaded nolo contender and then went off to live the remainder of his life in private. He lived well. He made a lot of money. He wrote a few books, one of which called Go Quietly or Else, was a piece of thinly veiled fiction attempting to explain his side of what happened. Few found it believable. Sunshine. Right now, outside, we have temperatures are going to make for a very pleasant evening. 71 degrees under improving sky conditions. We do have a few clouds around at the moment, but once the sun gets down below the western horizon, it'll be doing that pretty shortly. Those clouds should pretty much dissipate, and we're looking for a generally clear, we'll call it partly cloudy evening over our high temperature today. Still below normal, five degrees below normal for today for, for any number of days in a row. Now, not surprising. It's been kind of a cool year. As you look at the radar. A couple of things to notice. Not much in our area. Maybe some light sprinkles still in those clouds over on the eastern shore. But even that's dissipating up in New York, where the important, Yankee game is going to be held tonight. Looks like the showers might be moving from north to south. And in fact, that's the circulation around the low pressure system. And that low pressure system is moving on out. Looks like the game could start 730 game time. Up in New York. And it looks like the game could start with some light rain, but things should be improving as the innings pass by, so I do think they'll get the game in. Not completely sure. They may not have a slight delay though. Here is the satellite view showing that circulating center and it's not really moving all that fast. It's strong enough to produce the winds we saw today. Call the House of Ruth at 5548443 and help! The deadly disease that took the life of former vice president and Maryland Governor Spiro Agnew hit suddenly yesterday. Healthwatch a protocol into the 77 year old man died without suffering. His family was extremely surprised. They say that to the very end he was very active. He also seemed to be in pretty good health this summer. Denise, the 2.5 hours after he was rushed by paramedics to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, the former vice president was dead today. In a written statement, Agnew's wife said that his condition deteriorated suddenly. A cancer expert at the University of Maryland tells me acute leukemia symptoms can spread rapidly and gallop out of control. The early sign may simply be a fever, as if you were coming down with the flu. It may be an infection in a fingernail or a toe. It may be what you think is an upper respiratory infection, which turns out to be a serious, life threatening pneumonia. Although in Agnew's case, the disease was fatal, acute leukemia can be very treatable if it's recognized early enough.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136439/file/253031#t=1911.4,2022.21"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136439/file/253031/transcript/71244/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Also in Healthwatch, it sounds strange, but doctors are healing sores with a vacuum, pressure sores, pressure ulcers, bed sores they're all different names for the same kind of pain. Doctors say 3 to 10% of hospital patients get them because of pressure. But now those painful sores are healing with the help of a vacuum. A warning, though, the video you're about to see is very graphic. Scotty Lawrence was in a car accident three years ago after she left the hospital. An infection set in an open wound the size of a grapefruit that had to be cleaned several times a day to clear out the infection. It was like a hot poker that was being stuck in my back. Healing a wound like hers would normally take months, but not anymore. And one night I woke up with this idea and wrote it down and then brought it here and we made it. Doctor Argenta came up with a device called the Vacuum assisted Closure or VAC. A sponge is placed in the wound which is attached to a vacuum, and then the infection is drawn out continually and it actually increases the blood flow to those tissues. It increases the oxygen and the nutrients that can get to the tissues, and it just helps to heal faster. The leg wound was open for four months, but after just six weeks of treatment, it looked like this doctor has also seen good results with burns and diabetic foot ulcers. So we were able to decrease the progression of the depth of a bird almost 900% and we feed. A significant number of diabetics have been able to salvage a lot of legs and in feet. Should be available here in the near future. I would imagine that only doctors can use it. Well, that is the truth right now. Fearing that the trail is growing cold and the hunt for their daughter's killer, the parents of 24 year old Julie Williams visited the scene of her death to keep the case in the public eye. Alex Dietrich reports. Whoever killed Williams and a second woman along the Appalachian Trail is still unknown and at large. It was just the start of the hiking season along the Appalachian Trail. But last June, along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Skyline Drive in Virginia, life came to an end for 24 year old Julie Williams from Minnesota and her 26 year old friend Lolly Winans, who once went to school in Baltimore. They were found dead at their campsite, their hands tied, their throats slashed. I remember the first time that I was visiting with somebody that I really hadn't known or hadn't seen for a long time, and they said, well, how many children do you have?
