Dr. Bob, what happened? Well, Rex, the surprise part of it was the change over to rain, which we had called for during the afternoon hours. And it's just now occurring as we speak, going into the evening hours. The temperatures are gradually warming up and in fact, the worst is over. You can see behind me, we've gotten 4 to 6in of snow right here on TV Hill. And that's pretty typical of the Baltimore area. And actually, we've gotten what we would call the most snow among the outlying areas. So even the folks north and west don't have appreciably greater amounts than we have right now. We'll take a look at their local radar and give you an idea of how things have been moving over the last couple of hours. The precipitation pattern coming in from the south. You see the change in the the shape of the pattern. And notice the break that now is moving across toward the Chesapeake Bay. We have seen the precipitation lighten up and gradually change over whatever is falling now through the nighttime hours. Will be changing over to rain in short order by 9:00 tonight, no later than nine. It'll be rain all the way up to the Pennsylvania border. However, snow emergency plans still in effect virtually for all of the counties north of Baltimore. So you can under figure that one out for yourselves. But driving could still be a problem during the nighttime hours. Certainly daylight drive time tomorrow should be okay. Well, not okay completely, but not real problematic. All right, Dr. Bob, thank you. And Dr. Bob, as you mentioned, will be up to the weather map in just a couple of minutes with a complete forecast. Well, the heavy snowfall has kept road crews busy all day long. And our team coverage now continues with George Bailey, director of the city's Department of Public Works, answering phones ringing here live at the city snow center. George, our phones have been ringing off the hook. People asking where are the plows? I guess it took you guys by surprise, too, Well, we have been watching this storm and we've had people in working on it since 4:00 this morning. Between 2 and 3, we had a heavy snowfall. So we're plowing right now. We have a full complement. And in fact, we're pretty optimistic. If the weather stays as indicated by the weatherman, it should be very good the more for school and also for trash collection. We just have to go to watch. Did you have to call in extra people? We understood from someone that you had like 50% of your crews in, but when it got heavier around noon time, you called other folks. That's true. Yeah, that's true. And the way we have a full complement working right now, they cut everybody by surprise between 2 and 3. But we were out there plowing and working all the streets. Well, what are your plans for the rest of the night? We're going to work through the night. We're going to be ready for tomorrow morning. Well, there is other news this evening. Wet roads in Howard County caused a tragedy for a Laurel family. They were traveling north on Route one when the driver lost control, spun into the southbound lanes. The car hit a bread truck and six year old Andrew Johnson was killed. His parents and sister were taken to shock trauma. The driver of the bread truck has been treated and released. Throughout this day, eyewitness News reporters and photographers have been out in the snow recording it all for you. Our team coverage concludes now with a look at this unexpected snowy Sunday. It started off innocently enough. Light snow would turn to rain and we'd be done with it. Just enough for some Sunday fun. When my mom came into my room and she goes, Hey, you guys, it's snowing. Let's go skiing. I'm like, my gosh. There was just enough snow to go skiing. So I'm like, fine. We enjoyed it because, number one, we have a son that's about 23 months old. And it was, you know, the really first snow that he's out in and can enjoy it. And we took him out for a walk. And and now I got to shovel it all. And early on, there really wasn't that much to shovel. Folks expected it would soon be over. I'm out here because I don't want anybody to fall and kill themselves on my sidewalk, but that's about it. I no joy out of the stress to be here. Then around noon time, the unexpected happened.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136675/file/253389#t=305.54,396.08"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136675/file/253389/transcript/71539/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It started to snow heavier and heavier. Was this the surprise blizzard of 93? By mid-afternoon, driving was treacherous. Cars getting stuck everywhere. Snow crews were doubled and tripled. The city mobilized. And in our view, this even the fire department found time to make the Earth's first fire snowman. Dig it. Just another snowy day in Baltimore town. Your Eyewitness News, look at today's snow. Are you surprised by the way? Baltimore Gas and Electric reports no outages as a result of this unexpected storm. Well, dozens of churches canceled services today because of the weather, but one congregation has lost its church altogether. Someone set fire to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Essex last night. It caused $2 million damage and the weekend team stand, Saunders tells us in this follow up report. It also caused a lot of heartbreak. This was our promise. And now it's gone. Baltimore County fire officials say this inferno last night at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints in Essex was the work of an arsonist. 30 pieces of equipment and 130 firefighters were needed to extinguish the difficult blaze that got up into the ceiling above the sprinkler system. It got up into the heavily wooded part of the church, which is the center of the gymnasium, and stayed up high. And just I mean, I mean, it's nothing but wood up there. The morning after, it was difficult for church members who came and viewed the destruction from the night before.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136675/file/253389#t=396.65,512.61"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136675/file/253389/transcript/71539/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's devastating. If it's anything you want to think about it, What's going through your mind right now that we are in this church anymore? This structure was dedicated by its Mormon congregation only a year ago. Some members say it took nearly ten years to apply the finishing touches. And now to hear that someone intentionally set the blaze. This is not the first time they've tried to burn this church. How many times before? One of I know of. And I think there were a couple times that they were defacing the sides of it. Investigator has told several members that whoever set their church on fire probably started the blaze at this wooden barrier surrounding a dumpster. Then they say they apparently walked several yards away and torched another wooden fence in the back of the building. While the congregation comes to grips with this disaster, one main thought seems to occupy their minds more than any other. It makes you think somebody must not have any conscience at all. In ethics, I'm stands orders for the weekend team. No definite announcement has been made, but it's likely this congregation will be meeting at another church in Charleston. City firefighters not only had to battle a stubborn blaze on Oakford Avenue this afternoon, but they had to fight with the cold and the snow as well. Extra crews had to be called in to help fight the one alarm dwelling fire, which fire officials say started in the basement of the home. All of the people living in the house got out okay. Also tonight, Baltimore County police are investigating a possible dognapping ring. Police say nearly 30 purebreds have disappeared in northern Baltimore County and southern Pennsylvania in the last year. Some of the dogs are worth as much as $1,200 each. Dog owners say there are too many dogs missing for the disappearances to be just a coincidence. We've had a break. It's really very, very light. Whatever is falling around the Baltimore area right now. And I think this is going to be the story throughout the evening hours. What precipitation does fall will be in the form of rain, maybe a little bit of sleet and even further to the north where we normally expect it to be colder by 9:00 tonight, everything will have changed over to to rain and no more snow throughout the area. As we go to our stay temperature maps, you can see what the story is. We're 33, still below freezing further to the north. But down in Salisbury, it was a rain event from noontime on. Right now, they're at 42 degrees. It just took a little bit longer for this warmer air to start filtering in. And that's going to be the case throughout the overnight hour. Temperatures, as I mentioned, going into the break, are as low now as they will be all night. And we're expecting the temperature to rise through the overnight by drive time tomorrow, 40 degrees. There's enough stuff on the road. It'll be slushy, a drive time. But we don't anticipate any real widespread problems with commuting. And I'm pretty sure the schools are going to go off okay early in the morning. Looking back over the last 24 hours or so with the cloud cover notice, we had the clouds move on in. Here's the heavier shot of stuff that moved in and now has diminished somewhat after sunset. Our temperatures tomorrow, as I mentioned, will eventually get up into at least the mid 50s. Some areas further down to the south will hit 60 degrees, we anticipate a little bit closer to home. Here's what it looks like. 58 is what we'll say the downtown temperature will be. So a lot of this slushy stuff that we'll find around tomorrow morning will be a distant memory by drive time tomorrow afternoon. So here's the forecast for the rest of tonight. Whatever snow is still around will be changing to rain and drizzle, rising temperatures during the overnight. That's a really important part of the overnight forecast. Our low is what we see right now at 33 degrees. And tomorrow, look for sunshine coming out with some sunshine. A rather windy day, but quite mild with a high temperature of 56 degrees in the suburban areas, 58 degrees or so downtown, as we mentioned. And on a five day forecast, then we start to see the surge of cold air coming in Monday night. We'll have a decent daytime rise Monday night. But look at the midweek here, some real wintry temperatures and another system working its way into the southern California coast right now gives us the promise or at least the possibility of another bout of snow perhaps for the beginning of next weekend. So tomorrow morning doesn't look to be so bad. A little bit slushy right now, though, Richard, Pat, Chris, back to you. All right, Doctor Bob, five weeks, a little over five weeks till opening day. Right now, here are some of the pictures and sounds captured today by Eyewitness News reporters and photographers. It started off innocently enough. Light snow would turn to rain and we'd be done with it. Just enough for some sun fun. When my mom came into my room and she said, Hey, you guys are throwing, let's go ski. I'm like, my gosh. There was just enough snow to go skiing. So it's really fun. We enjoyed it because, number one, we have a son that's about 23 months old. Folks expected it would soon be over. I'm out here because I don't want anybody to fall and kill themselves on my sidewalk, but that's about it. I had no joy out of the stress to be here. Then around noon time, the unexpected happened. It started to snow heavier and heavier. Was this the surprise blizzard of 93? By mid-afternoon, driving was treacherous. Cars getting stuck everywhere. Snow crews were doubled and tripled. The city mobilized. The push to beat the storm was on. Some made it and others found themselves spinning our wheels. The sounds of a Baltimore winter. There was a lot more to shovel and plenty of snow for the first major snowball wars of the year. Well, I feel like it's like when I hit. Right. But freezing of the slush that's on the roads now is not really a big threat during the overnight early morning hours. Right. And I think that's going to be the saving grace for rush hour. So let's go ahead look at the temperatures around the state right now, because as we mentioned, we are above freezing right now in the Baltimore area and we will stay that way through the overnight, probably adding a few more degrees to this. We'll be close to 40 degrees by the time we do get to drive time tomorrow. Out to the west, temperatures also above 40 degrees or above 32 degrees, that is. So a lot of melting will occur once we get into the mid to late morning hours and through the rest of the day. Look for a slushy rush hour, particularly on the side roads. The highway crews should have the main roads pretty well under control by the time you head out tomorrow. And by the time the evening rush hour comes around, all those problems should be a fond memory. Closer to home, there are those temperatures we expect tomorrow. And our forecast then for the rest of tonight, we're looking for the clouds to stay in place, giving us the possibility of some light rain, drizzle and fog on and off during the overnight hours there. Maybe some showers, rain. In fact, it's not out of the question. As I said before, some folks may, in fact, see a thunderstorm as this warmer air pushes its way into the region.
