Good evening, everyone. And we hope you're having a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend right now. Pope John Paul the first is the official spiritual leader of the world's 700 million Roman Catholics. Today's investiture ceremonies lasted only 43 minutes and was stripped of much of its past pomp. Pope John Paul, the first walked from St Peter's Basilica to the altar on the steps of St Peter's, then to the papal chair of gold gilded wood and beige velvet. One by one, more than 100 cardinals of the church not before him kiss the papal ring as a sign of obedience and receive the traditional kiss of peace. The pope smiled broadly and exchanged a few words with each of the cardinals. Investiture was followed by a solemn mass. Follow me. Mortalities in all your rainy chills. This. It was a simple investiture and gone was the traditional crown of silver and gold. Earlier in this day, as he imparted his blessings on the people of the world, Pope John Paul, the first, said what the world needed most was more prayers and fewer bottles.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114698/file/218057#t=6.79,211.31"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114698/file/218057/transcript/62083/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Baltimore's Catholics were also praying with the new pope this Sunday at special masses throughout our city. Steve Fraser An instant I talked with some of you about the new pope. I think they've got a pope in there that understands the people he's not in with the pomp and ceremony. And I think he understands all the people everywhere, not just Catholics, but all people. And I think it'll be great for the job. I think that people have been interested in the black cardinals of late. And so people have looked more towards the cardinals than perhaps they used to. I will watch it from beginning until now. And what do you think of it? I think it's the greatest thing it ever happened. Do you really feel any difference between this pope and the last? Oh, I certainly do. In what way? Well, in my home, I can't words can't express it. Maybe the Holy Spirit guided the cardinals in selecting this man.
