It is almost time for the new school year to begin. And at Northeast High school in and around the county, this new year brings with it special significance. The school has been rocked by an ongoing sex scandal with allegations of improper sexual conduct by three different teachers. But school officials, teachers, students and their parents met last night to discuss a plan designed to get the new school year off to a fresh start. The plan calls for increased counselors at the school and a full time psychologist and registered nurse. Sexual harassment and sexual abuse literature will also be made available to all the students from all the groups that we talked to parents, students and staff. There was a concern that that they needed to know what was going on. They needed more communication, more dialog throughout the whole process. I can't fault a school one, one man and his actions, they're striving very hard to to recover the school's reputation. And I think they're doing it. I don't know how these teachers return to work today. Schools open for students there. Next Wednesday, members of a special state task force on education have heard a strong plea to increase city school funding. City schools superintendent Dr. Walter Mra was among those detailing the city's push for higher funding yesterday and likened the state of Maryland to the human body, saying Baltimore is certainly the state's right arm and its funding should reflect that importance. They tested negative for rabies afterwards. Baltimore City firefighters were busy most of the night with a fire at the Resco plant down in Westport. Investigators say around five a. Trash in a pit at the recycling plant caught fire and the plant's sprinkler system was unable to put it out because of problems getting into the pit and to the source of the blaze. It took firefighters nearly eight hours to put out the smoky fire and clear the scene. Investigators believe a piece of trash was already burning when it was dropped into the pit. And that's what started the fire. This morning, there is some relative good news for mega-star Michael Jackson. The Los Angeles Times is reporting a videotape seized from Jackson's homes did not incriminate the entertainer, nor was there any other physical evidence to support the child abuse allegation. Also, the Hollywood Reporter has revealed the father of the 13 year old allegedly molested by Jackson recently tried to set up a film production and financing company with Jackson for an initial cost of $20 million. The $20 million figure is, of course, the same amount mentioned by Jackson's security chief as the extortionists original demand. Michael Jackson's birthday is on Sunday. He will be 35. And then you remember you remember by the end of the game how hazy it was. And it was like looking across the other side. He was like, Can you oh, say, can you see not just words of The Star-Spangled Banner, but, well, I'm looking for some friends right across the field. Unbelievable. Again. Students at Northeast High School now know everything they ever wanted to know about sexual misconduct but were afraid to ask. At an orientation meeting last night, teachers, students and their parents discuss the new plan to deal with misconduct problems. And freshmen were introduced to the high school's new counseling and support programs. Northeast has been rocked by charges this past year. Three teachers had sex with students over the years. Principal Joseph Carducci says he hopes the new day, the new programs open up a dialog and a stream of communication at the school. A stubborn, smoky fire at the Resco plant in Westport took firefighters hours to put out last night. Authorities say the recycling plant's sprinkler system could not extinguish the blaze burning in a trash pit because of problems getting into the pit, into the source of the fire. It also took firefighters close to eight hours to put out the flames. Investigators say a piece of trash that was already burning when it was dropped into the pit started the fire. A robbery at the Randalstown Pizza Hut overnight left five employees very cold for about a half an hour. Her only brother was stationed on that ship when his plane went down over the Mediterranean Sea in 1951. His body was never recovered. I've never been. With adding, I carry his picture with me all the time. And now I've brought flowers to his final resting place. The flowers will remain on the deck of the Coral Sea until it is dismantled.
