Judge Joseph Kaplan did that when he ruled Jeffrey and Carol Levitt violated his court order, limiting their spending to $1 ,000 a week in an effort to freeze the Levitt's should it later be needed as payout cash for lawsuits and fines. But because the Levitts spent more than 1 ,000 a week, Kaplan found them in contempt, sentencing Jeffrey Levitt to 18 months in prison and Carol Levitt to 30 days in jail. That was January 8th, and between then and today, the Levitts and their lawyers have filed a flurry of appeals to avoid Kaplan's contempt sentence. It worked until Tuesday, when the Levitts asked the state's highest court, the Court of Appeals, to hear their argument that Kaplan's original order limiting their spending was illegal. The court declined to hear the matter. and Jeffrey Levitt went to jail. Carol Levitt goes tomorrow. Meanwhile, the appeals roll on. The Levitts have one before the Court of Special Appeals right now, arguing once again that Judge Kaplan's order limiting their spending is illegal. They could be freed from jail if they win that appeal, providing the final ruling beats out their jail sentences.
