I'm Sally Thorne. You're coming up right now at five. The beloved creator of Lamb Chop, Shari Lewis, dies of cancer. A light sentence for the molester of a 12 year old boy in Eastpointe. An exclusive interview with the victim's angry mother. They're sick. I'm sorry. I don't think it was fair. Truthfully, I think it should have been more punishment. We're live in Sky chopper 13 over the scene of a fatal plane crash on Kent Island. The only survivor of the crash that killed Princess Diana speaks publicly for the first time. Need help fighting pain? Check your kitchen. And a Playboy model who's six months pregnant. Full stories up next to five. You're watching WGRZ TV. This is Eyewitness News. She charmed children for decades. Puppeteer Shari Lewis has died of cancer. Shari Lewis and her friends Lamb Chop and Charlie Horse are household names to any family with small children. We begin our team coverage tonight with Brenda Carl, who reports Lewis's sudden passing has shocked and saddened her fans here in Baltimore. You want to get up the pond? You are not my home. It takes someone very talented to turn an old sock into a superstar. But that's what Sherry Lewis did when she created the character of Lambchop. You have to spell. It all started as a guest appearance on a TV show. Kids loved it, and so did parents. By 1962, the perky, pint sized performer with the flaming red hair and her own TV show, Self-esteem comes from trying to do something, no matter how small and accomplishing it. I think the majority of Americans alive grew up watching Shari Lewis, including me. And you know, her passing. That's an end of a big era. With a career that spanned over four decades. Jerry Lewis won 12 Emmy Awards, including five for her last PBS series, Lamb Chops play Along. And somehow she also found time to write over 60 children's books. She was a great ventriloquist. You know, besides being a great kid show host, I mean, she had a really great talent as a ventriloquist, which is not something that's easy and that takes years of training. That's all that. Yes. He goes on and on. My. And our years of watching will always bring to mind the theme song from Lamb Chops Play Along. The song That Doesn't end has now come to an end. Brenda Carl, WJZ, Eyewitness News. Shari Lewis was 65 years old. Her funeral will be private, with a public memorial service sometime later. Well, Sally, no, it was only weeks ago that we first learned of Jerry Lewis battle with uterine cancer, and she was undergoing aggressive treatment to try and fight it. Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lynn continues our team coverage. So this is really, really a sad day. It's a big loss. She was having chemotherapy at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. That started about six weeks ago. But over the weekend, Lewis developed pneumonia and died. Yesterday we talked about Jerry Lewis's case with Doctor Francis Grumman, chief of gynecological oncology at BMC. He says that chemotherapy is not the common treatment for uterine cancer unless it's advanced. Most women have surgery to remove the uterus, the fallopian tubes, and the ovaries. Uterine cancer is the most common gynecological malignancy. 39,000 women will be diagnosed with it this year. Suzanne Collins joins us with the exclusive details of today's sentencing of 66 year old William Brooks. Suzanne Will Sally William Brooks will spend 18 months behind bars, and he's already served half of that waiting for trial. The mother of the 12 year old victim is not happy because she believes the older man has turned her son into a withdrawn and frightened kid who will suffer all his life. Mr. Brooks, what do you have to say about these sex charges? I got not to say you. Did you do that, sir? Did you find all that boy? No. Yes. Jesse did. You did it. Last December, William Brooks denied molesting the 12 year old. Later, he admitted he did do it and made a guilty plea. 18 months. I mean, that's a slap in the morning and saying is okay, but I still believe that he will go out and do this again. The boy, who looks a lot younger than 12, could not bring himself to speak about it, and we didn't press him. His mother says it has not been easy. She claims some of his friends were also victims but did not want to come forward. I now know what they're talking about, why they didn't want to come forward because my son's been tormented. He's been called names and they all knew why the other kids didn't do it. But, you know, somebody's got to stop this man. The court psychiatrist and the pre-sentence report from the probation department said that he's operating at about a 7 or 8 year old level, and certainly doesn't have the wherewithal to take care of himself in the division of Corrections. In court, Brooks said, I'm just sorry it happened and apologized to everybody. What would have happened to him? Do you believe in Department of Corrections? I think he would have got what he gave my son, truthfully. Yeah. That your hope that he would have gotten that. And then he could feel the fear that my son's real. Brooks met the victim and his friends at Eastpoint Mall, got them to cross the highway to the theater bathroom, and then paid the money. It was an ongoing contact. Sally. Suzanne, I know in cases like this that there's often a pattern. Did this guy have prior convictions? Well, Guy Thomas Bain of Waldorf, Maryland, has earned a sterling reputation as one of the best restores a World War Two aircraft in the country. One of the aircraft that he restored now lives near homes on Kent Island. He died though doing what he loved. His friends believe that last night he was in the process of accepting a commission to restore another World War Two plane from a well-known Indiana collector, when they both perished proudly flying in the front seat of this basic trainer, Thomas Bayne. He was so good at aircraft restorations that this plane won an award at the prestigious Oshkosh Flying. But this is all that remains of his current plane, a World War two trainer of 13. He flew here and see a friend talk to him about. I believe having another airplane repaired is what I'm being told or worked on today. NTSB investigators say that the entire plane was intact, which greatly aids in their investigation. This is what the plane looked like. And last night, Bain offered to take this waitress up for a ride. Makes me sick. I can't even describe the feeling. It makes me sick. Over 10,000 copies of the whole team were built for things. His neighbor believes that few were as nice as the one that crashed, and he was very, very careful, very cautious of what he did. And it had to be he didn't cut no corners on anything, right? The inventors of the therapy say that the treatment can regenerate a victim's damaged brain cells and help them function at a higher level. It's akin to tattooing using a reciprocating needle bathed in a pigment to change the color of the skin. Many women are using the technique for permanent eyeliner or lip color, but Virginia is using it to cover a birthmark on her face. So when I discovered this, I couldn't believe it because it's so noninvasive and so affordable and it doesn't leave a white blotchy area, it just blends it right into your skin coloring. It's not an attack on the problem. It's a it's a camouflaging. It doesn't change. A scar just hides it. It's not so noticeable. John Shumate says he performed thousands of procedures over the past six years. He's done eyebrows, filling in the missing hairs, scars on the head, painting in fake hair with his needle. And he's even lightened a birthmark that changed one woman's entire appearance. The pigment is made of iron oxide or vegetable dyes. Now it doesn't look like any rain to really help the folks trying to grow things, the farmers and gardeners out, but it does look like a possibility. There really not much of a threat for us in the middle of the state. 85 degrees is our temperature right now under blue, cloudless skies around Baltimore, 80 degrees down the ocean, 82 at Atlantic City, 85 down at Richmond. So far as today goes, unofficially, our high temperature today, 86 degrees. The official number will come in by the time we get on the air at 11:00. Doctor Neal Barnard recently took me to Fresh Field in Mount Washington to find foods. He says fight pain. One of the best things that I could pick to fight him, I would stop by and get a big, big bag of rice, especially the brown rice, because that's great for digestive pains. It's got no cholesterol, so it helps open up the arteries and restore your circulation. And it never triggers migraines or arthritis. And the next time your arthritis does flare up, don't reach for the aspirin, Barnard says. Buy some ginger instead. It actually stops the white blood cells from releasing the chemicals that make your joints hurt and swell up in arthritis and other conditions. So if you have arthritis, would you eat more of this? About a half a teaspoon to a teaspoon per day is really all you need. It can be the root ginger or it can be fresh powder ginger. If you develop shingles or are recovering from a mastectomy. Barnard suggests applying hot peppers to the area through a fluke of nature. Hot peppers contain a substance called capsaicin. The name is not important, but that's the zing in a jalapeno. And what it does is it actually blocks the nerves from being able to transmit pain. It depletes the nerve chemicals that signal pain in the brain for digestive pain, he says. Eat peppermint and relieve pain from carpal tunnel syndrome. Anything containing vitamin B6 like bananas, beans, or nuts can do the job. The pain fighters are outlined in Barnard's new book, Foods That Fight Pain. He also suggests eating so-called neutral foods if it doesn't cause pain at all, like rice never causes pain.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136450/file/253041#t=2291.7,2378.55"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136450/file/253041/transcript/71335/annotation/24","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Cooked green vegetables. People have been tired of taking medicines for a long time to get side effects. They don't get all the relief they need. And finally, we have enough science to show us how to do it right. Yeah, well, the big news is the Oilers are back home, after a nice win. Not playing. Yeah, nice win, but a bad series in Kansas City. They had no reason to come anywhere close to being swept by the Kansas City Royals, who most of the season has not been able to hit their way out of a paper bag. Were able to put up with, two nine run decisions against the Royals. No baseball for the Orioles tonight as they have the first of two off days this week. The other one is on Thursday. Orioles return to Charm City after salvaging the final game of a three game set in Kansas City. The biggest thing to resemble a controversy in this one came in the Kansas City third, with the Orioles already had five to nothing. Jose Offerman jumps out of the batter's box to lay down a perfectly placed drag bunt down third base line. The Orioles have got absolutely no play on this thing, so they just have to let the ball stop. Ray Miller comes out to argue that Offerman should be out because he stepped out of the batter's box. Well, he maybe chose his words poorly because Rocky Road tossed him out of the game. His sixth ejection of the year. Well, Kyrie will be having some moderate problems I think with ragweed over the next few days the humidity is going to start to creep up a bit as we get on into say mid week. But we're pretty much going to be in the moderate range throughout the five day period. What we need is a real good rain to wash all that stuff out, get us back into the low range, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen here. Looks like a nice day. Tomorrow will be a few degrees warmer at 86, but the humidity will be fairly low tomorrow once again. So Tuesday's looking pretty nice, but the humidity will be creeping up toward midweek as we get back to what will be seasonable temperatures. Now, I mentioned a shower, a little bit of rain here Wednesday and Thursday. This is for the Eastern Shore, not really for central Maryland or western Maryland, certainly, but a coastal system may produce some showers over on the Eastern Shore Wednesday or Thursday. The humidity will be coming back in, but it's really not going to get oppressively hot. So not a bad five day forecast, right? That's right, doctor Bob. Thank you. Finally, at five, most of us think of decoys as colorful wooden ducks that are used as ornaments. They are and they aren't. George Baumann says there are lessons to be learned about decoys along the Susquehanna Flats of Maryland by George. Ducks abound along the flats here at Harvard of Grace, where the Susquehanna joins the bay. That's why duck hunting or gunning is so much a part of the town's heritage. The preservation of that heritage led to creation of the heritage Grace Decoy Museum. It sits on the waterfront above the promenade. Mary Jo Murphy, the director, led me through and I was amazed at the vastness of the exhibits two floors of decoys, a history of decoys and their makers. The museum even includes the workshop of the late Madison Mitchell, among the most famous of the town's decoy makers, in a room where decoy making classes are held, I met David Walker, one of the town's full time decoy makers. He started as a boy and never stopped. I guess it's a challenge. And and it's, something that I do seven days a week, and I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't doing that. Sort of a way of life up here is a way of life for many, many other local Carberry. I believe there's probably about 20 or so that do it full time and have to face. The quality and presentation of the exhibits is impressive. They include boats used for hunting and the evolution of the shotguns.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136450/file/253041#t=3468.77,3580.04"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136450/file/253041/transcript/71335/annotation/35","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I was impressed and inquired about the impressions of others. Not just interested, but I think one of those decoys was just out somewhere. Probably for you and for me, I'm sure. Yeah. All right. Thanks, Bob. Thanks a lot. It is. That's it for us at this hour. Arnold Kinlaw of Pittsfield, drowned last night on the Nanticoke River shortly after calling out to a friend for help. His friends tried to reach him, but could not. And this was the scene after six year old Jackson Rogers of New Jersey was pulled out of a friend's swimming pool in Monkton. Rogers was given CPR and flown to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Emergency Center. But it was too late. The little boy died, and a 39 year old man was pronounced dead after he was found floating face down at a Sandy Point State Park. He had been swimming at the unguarded beach with friends. Okay, here are just a few tips to remember before going into the pool or the beach. Let's consider them reminders. Never swim alone. First of all, never drink alcohol and swim. Enter feet first. As we told you earlier, President Clinton's attorneys continue their legal maneuvering today in the Monica Lewinsky matter. In his commentary tonight, Michael Lesko wonders where the truth and the law will converge. Not only where, but when. Bill Clinton has now been urged by members of both political parties to simply come forward and tell the truth about Monica Lewinsky in a televised speech and await the embrace of a nation generally eager to forgive all admitted transgressors. Of course, all this urging assumes that Clinton has not previously told the truth in this matter. In this country in the last 30 years, all politicians are assumed guilty until proven innocent. Clinton's own record for bending the truth and sometimes breaking it is not a pretty one. But what's the alternative? Impeachment hearings. This isn't Watergate, where the issues were constitutional violations. This is private business that more than a few members of Congress have gone through themselves. Matters of conscience that confront many people with power and prestige. Do they want to discuss adultery in a public setting? For that matter, do they want to make this the country's business when their own constituents send them to Washington to deal with schools, with crime and with jobs, and not with sex? There may come a time when the loudest voices in Washington, on either side of the argument, will pay a price for dragging it out. Which is one more reason for Bill Clinton to speak the truth and move on. I'm Michael Alaska. Thanks, Michael. Some uninvited guests are spreading their wings on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Looking down toward the key bridge from the sky on top of our candelabra tower on here on TV Hill. And we pan back up. Pull back. That is so we can see downtown and lots of sunshine. You look at the sky with a little bit of haze, but looking down actually always ends up looking a little more hazy than looking up. So if you're outside looking at the blue sky, you're not seeing anything in the way of cloudiness around. Go up to the satellite and look back down a few clouds over hugging the shoreline, and there is a disturbance off the Carolina coast here. And things are moving so slowly, weather wise that this system actually has been hanging around for the last couple of days, does occasionally throw some clouds back in toward the eastern shore. None of those have made it in toward Baltimore, and in fact, we're looking for a generally clear night through the central and western part of the state, with maybe a few clouds over on the eastern shore. As you can notice, he missed the umpire as well.
