Indeed. You did that wonderful job. How was it being Miss Baltimore as best? Are you enjoying it? It was incredible. It has been a wonderful year for me, one of both personal growth and just building confidence and getting me out, doing what I want to do. You know what's interesting? I remember when you were one of the contestants because we had all of the contestants on the show to see you one year later, approximately one year later. There is a market amount of difference that you really have grown. Thank you. Thank you. I feel a lot of good people behind me also that have helped in the process. What kinds of things did you do for the city and representing it throughout that year? I was a member of the Jazz festival when Mayor de Burns opened the the what is it, Bourbon Street downtown? I did the city fair. I've done a lot of the the reception type things that they've had throughout the city. You name it. They have done openings of the gallery. I was there. Fantastic. So I was at Ethel's place. I was that was a real big thrill for me. Great. Great. Are you planning on taking a artistic career further from here, or what's in store for you? Yes, I'm pursuing a career in music.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=354.13,486.29"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"My. When does it come up and when the young ladies participate and vie for that title? What are the kinds of things that the judges look for? Well, the pageant will be held April 10th at the Omni Hotel at 730. It's just basically interview. They look for somebody who's got at least something between their evening gown and swimsuit and talent, which is 50% of your whole scoring process. You know, that's got to be a very competitive situation to go into. Do you recommend anything prior to folks trying to enter a contest such as that? No. What you want to do and have your talent developed? A lot of times a lot of the girls just come in because they think that they can just walk well and that will get them over. It's the talent is the main thing. They have to really be developed when they come in there. And that'll take you. And what do you get out of the competition? I mean, having been there, having won. What will you take away from that competition? The title as well. A lot of of confidence from performing. I mean, I go every place at this point and it's just helped me with my performing techniques of just all the people I've met, people like Arlen to hairstyling making, you know, people from the mayor's office. It's just been incredible. And I'll always remember that and have those people with me and they still still plug for you, even though I won't be Miss Baltimore's best 88. All you have to do is call up and request them. Okay. And you see what the pageant can do for you. Just look at Maya Boston. Now, you're going to stay with us throughout the show. And of course, you're going to sing another song a little bit later, but you're also going to be involved in talking with our next guest, who happens to be Paula Brooks of the Paula Pauline Brooks Boutique. And we'll have some delightful fashions right after this. Stay with us here. Had no idea. Come on. And then, son. Welcome back to City Life as we celebrate the spring season. And I think we're off to a great start. And joining us now is the daughter of almost a Baltimore legend, if not so. Paula Brooks is with us today and representing Polly in Books Boutique to share with us this spring fashion. What's what's hot this spring? Well, Betty, what's hot? We're calling this spring spirit to spring. Everything is bright, bright colors, lots of embellishments. Everything has studs, rhinestones, applicators. It's fashion is very exciting this spring. Which designers are hot this season? Well, we have some very talented designers right here in Baltimore. And you are going to see her things first. One of their one of the designers is Audrey Simmons from Simmons Art, where she does hand applicator, sweats and casual clothes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=581.84,771.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We call them high voltage weekend, where they're great. They're 50 polly and 50 cotton, so they don't wrinkle so well. And they're just they look great, but they feel very comfortable. Okay. Now I know most of the things that seem to be hanging on the racks this season are about two inches long. What about those? Well, I'm not sure I can handle belts. The lengths really depend on you. We want you to figure out what's best for you. Don't let fashion dictate to you. You decide what looks good on you. And I've seen legs downtown this weekend that nobody should see my mother or a husband. Really? If you don't look good in short skirts, then don't wear them. Know about comfort. You know, a lot of times I've seen the fashions are based on what's in and what's out. Is comfort a big part of what's coming out this year. Comfort is a very big part and like the clothes are very comfortable. There's lots of cotton and poly cotton that briefs with you and it's easy to move and as well as look great. Now, for some of the younger people, there's a lot of short, tight looks that aren't comfortable. But when you're long young, who cares about you just want to look good right now. In today's paper, on the fashion page, they mentioned that the shorter items will for those that don't want that tight look as if they're constricted, can have them a little bit fuller. Is are you showing that that's true? You'll see some of those today. There are some that are short but easy. A little fullness to them and you'll see lots of ruffles. Three ruffles on the bottom, two ruffles on the bottom favorite that's going to look like rather than talk so much about it without saying it, let's see it and then talk right here they come.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=772.22,888.14"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, this is Christine Tavakoli and Catherine Mouret, and they're wearing fashions from Simmons Aunt Wear. And these are heat filled and apple cold sweats. Is that hand-painted? No, they're not hand-painted. Those are actually bits of fabric floor and gold and silver lamé that often hit silver onto the fabric. And she also puts the rhinestones on it. And how you wash them. How do they wash? They wash beautifully. They really do. So these are examples of those vibrant colors that you were talking about. That's gorgeous. Look. Very good. I certainly hope so. Give us an idea of the range in price of these items that we're seeing from the seminar. They range from, I would say, 79, 95 to 89, and then there are a few that are one. One 1995, I believe. Gorgeous. I'm interested in where you were, where some of these things, they help to dress that to actually go up when I'm around. They really are. That's the thing with fashion. This spring dress, you look dressy all the time, but you can still feel comfortable. So you can wear these to the supermarket and the laundromat and some shopping meetings. It's a good go all the way, Colors and gorgeous. You know. I see you have a variation on the stone wash look. But is that still hot this season? Denim is the hottest thing since they found out how to acid wash. And I dunno, it's just something. Because, you know, Americans love denim anyway. Now, speaking of hot, I like this dirty now. And this is a Brazilian fashion. It's by Claudia Monique. And these things are wild and crazy and you'll never see them again. What kind of a cat is that? That's an asymmetric top. It's a skirt that is actually pants.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=896.28,1038.349"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That is fabulous. This is deceiving because it looks like it's two pieces, but the skirt underneath is attached to the dress. Trucks actually are one piece out. How do you describe this as a style? What? I mean, what is it? Is it a blue or what? Oh, it's. It's a chemise, a bubble. Okay. Yeah, it's a bubble layer way over my head now, But I don't like that part. So black and white is still in black and white, and it's very stubborn and always has gotten of some reason. I've always liked black hair for. You know, some papers. They were running a contest, or at least a little promotion or whatever. Determining what is Baltimore style. Now, you've been in fashion since as well, as long as you've been born and your mother even before you. How would you describe Baltimore style? I think Baltimore is a little conservative. I really do. I think Baltimoreans are beginning to kind of blossom and be a little more daring with their fashions. But I think Baltimore has been a bit conservative, very laid back idea. So it's no longer the town and country or the yuppie look necessarily. But, you know, I think people are really branching out and getting into a lot of rhinestones and studs. And the court of 2010 is to have fun with fashion. Baltimore is beginning to experiment more, to be more like trendsetters. I think so. I think so. Yes. It's fashion really starts on the streets anyway. And then the big designers pick it up, make thousands, you know, thousand dollar outfits, and then it filters down to like outfits.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=1041.23,1177.02"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The same outfit, the same look at $50. Okay. You know. Okay. Well, we will have more fashions in just a moment. So stay with us. We'll be right back. Welcome back. As we celebrate spring of fashion from Falling books, a boutique, we actually follow the we're talking about care and so forth of fabrics and so forth with all the different fabrics available now and all the wonderful colors and everything. Is there a greater concern or are these fashions easier to care for than they were years ago? Fashions are very easy to care for now that they're blending poorly with cotton. It gives you the comforts of cotton with the simplicity and easy care of polyester. So that means that you don't have a lot of wrinkles. They wash well, and yet they still breathe and move. Well, what about some tips? You mentioned some tips. One thing is to wash your clothes inside out. A lot of the things that have these studs and applications on them, if you wash them inside out the last a lot longer. Do you know, I guess my my theme is this length of these skirts, because I like to try them, but I'm not sure I have the nerve to do it. Someone. A friend of mine said that if you wore them in the sixties, you ought not to be caught dead in them. In the eighties. It's that a rule of thumb to follow. I don't think that's true. I think it's got to be what's good for you and what looks good on you. I think you've got to go in there with your mirror, checked it out, you know. And if it really doesn't look right, then no. But if you feel good in it, then you're going to look good.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=1177.56,1362.69"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/10","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"To be honest, you've got to take a good, honest look. Okay. What else do we have on tap for us in this fashion? The premier today, we've got another Brazilian one coming up. This is very unusual. There are pockets all over. There are pleats. I mean, there's just lots and lots of detail here. Now, we would find this in your boutiques. Oh, yeah. But you'll only find that one. As I said, these Brazilian things are one of a kind, and we cannot get them again. So the size is probably around quite a to make that particular one is a small and they do come small, medium size. Now, how versatile is this? What can you do with the pieces apart from each other? Well, you could put your camisole top of some black pants or some white pants, and you could also use the long coat over white or black out. Give us a sense of price here. Prices, approximately. That one is about $200. My heavens. It's like they're all hands on. And these things are things that will last forever and they'll always be in style. Okay. Thank you. Got this today or Stonewall. This is tie dye and it's a cotton gauze. That one is all caught in satin applications and ribbons at the top and a lonely left at the waist. And I think it's great you're comfortable, but you are not really smart. And again, you can be dressy as well as. Right? Yeah. Fantastic. Thank you. Oh, I like this. This is gorgeous. Oh, my. Okay. Also, it's a mini dress, so you could change it. Just pull it out, roll it off, Wear it without the top. You got a whole nother outfit. But it takes a certain kind of lady to wear this, right? I'm sure that everybody can be. Oh, no, it's not for everybody. Fantastic. You. Oh, good male on the show. I was giving my hand. You are not going home. So is wearing a suit from Webster's. Well, it's not a suit. It's a sport jacket by Robin Varley. And if slacks, a black pinstripe suit and tie, is by Carlo Palazzi. His jacket is 45 minutes. So, as you know, linen is a fabric that wrinkled as soon as you put it on. So they started blending it with cotton to give it a little more body. And but I thought that was a part of a childhood that some people just don't like. But what about that? It's gone. No, we didn't. But we didn't describe the lady's outfit. But let me say this. Her hat was fine, Nancy Martin, especially for you. And as I said, we've got a lot of hidden talent here in Baltimore. This lady. But she look gorgeous hats. Yes. Salute to spring. I happened to be wearing one of the fashions from the Pauline Brooks Boutique. I love the colors. And so you indicated that the colors are very hot. Yes, it's hand-painted. Your outfit is actually hand-painted. Yeah, I'm modeling it. Okay. No tacky side to that. Yes. She's got rhinestones. She's got an uneven halo. And the thing about fashion is that everything comes back. I know you all remember the uneven hemlines from before. Yeah, well, they're back. And another thing that's back that I love are the peplum suits. You know, the sassy Jack wearing the tie, right? Yes. The one thing about this, this reminds me of one of the master painters. What is it? Modigliani. Say yes. Yes. Sure. That's what I'm talking about. But the point is to with these colors, you can mix hot colors. There are no no nos in terms of colored mix. Oh, no. There they are, mixing colors that were never seen together before, like orange and red. And great hot green is hot yellow. Also France. Yes, mixing sex. But there is that art to mixing prints, don't you think? I don't. Can you imagine all prints going together? Going up. But then you make them go together. You make your own fashion statement. That's the thing. You know, a lot of people aren't going to wear miss mix match prints, but for some of those daring ones, they can do it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=1776.95,1987.71"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay, let's see some more fashion. And I think Vernon might just take her peplum off for all sorts of where her dress is very versatile because her peplum comes off or cowl comes off. She can change the look of her dress. In so many ways, she can put the belt around her hip. She can blouse it and make it a little shorter. She can take her cowl off. Really change her outfit. Okay. Looks great. Roger is wearing the ruffles that are so hot this season. And pain is also very, very hot this year. And the thing is, you wonder about the price of clothes, but they are actually painful for love and they are things to be kept for years and not discarded. Is that a one or two piece? That's a two piece outfit. And what's the cost of that? I think it's about $80. And notice the necklace, which is gorgeous with that. It's perfect. Okay. Okay. What else do we have? Now, as you know, suits are always important and this is a nice suit for a middle aged person or conservative. As you see, all the skirt months are not sure. It's not as long as they have them, but it's not as short as a lot of another very special pattern. Yes. Looks like a fashion parade. Yeah, it's really red is a big color this spring. Thank you. First in international news, one man went to the gallows alone on Friday in South Africa. The 24 year old man was hanged before dawn for the 1985 murder of a woman in the Port Elizabeth Township. The victim was killed with a necklace that's a gasoline soaked tire placed around the victim's neck and set on fire. Six others were to have been hanged on Friday, but a judge granted a stay of execution for one month to the group known as the Sharpeville six. They now have four weeks to apply for a retrial. The shopkeeper, six, was convicted under the Common Cause principle for being part of a mob that stoned and burned a town councilor in 1984. Members of the political community are lining up on both sides of the president's decision to send troops into Honduras. But for Democratic presidential candidate Jesse Jackson, the issue is not controversy. The Sandinista appears to be a pattern of diversion, Just as the indictments on the administration are coming down and questions are being raised again about Mr.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324#t=2299.29,2626.32"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105558/file/206324/transcript/48960/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Reagan's policy in the Iran-Contra affair, exchanging hostages for arms in the Middle East and drugs for arms with the Contras in Latin America, that that is the invasion. We were then told we had to be saved from Grenada. Now we having to be saved from from the Sandinistas. I will not be satisfied until there's a full, complete congressional investigation. The Maryland National Guard returns home today from its trip to Honduras. A 12 member crew from the 135th Tactical Airlift Group left on Friday for Honduras. They went to airlift a Washington based National Guard engineering unit back home. The mission was a routine assignment that the Maryland Guard accepted last August and was not part of the group dispatched by President Reagan last week. A federal judge in Baltimore has refused to grant a new trial for former Maryland State Senator Clarence Mitchell. Mitchell must now face sentencing on April 4th for trying to interfere with a grand jury investigation of a drug dealer. Mitchell and his brother Michael begin serving two and a half years in federal prison next month. They were both convicted of trying to obstruct a congressional investigation. Baltimore plays host this week to the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations Annual National Conference. The association was formed several years ago as a scholarly body to research ancient African civilizations and to document that information. They organized a momentous trip last summer to the Nile Valley in Egypt, a trip that close to 1000 African Americans attended. Finally, you may be surprised to know there was a connection between poet and literary genius Dorothy Parker and the NAACP. Parker, famous for the line men, seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses, died in 1967. No one paid her mortuary bill, so Parker's ashes stayed on a shelf in her lawyer's office. Enter Benjamin Hooks and the NAACP. Parker left her entire estate to the NAACP. A courageous thing for a white woman to do 20 years ago. For that reason, Hooks wants Parker's ashes brought to the national headquarters here in Baltimore. He plans to establish a Dorothy Parker garden on the property. Perhaps then Parker can have the epitaph she once suggested. Excuse my dust. That's news for this week. Enjoy the rest of the day and the week ahead on my sister eBay. Let me start off by saying that. But this is a stretch for you, isn't it? I mean, you're playing the 81 year old man and you couldn't be any more than, what, 3130 2000, Yes, it is a bit of a stretch. How did you prepare yourself for the role? Well, it is a stretch, and that's one of the challenges of the piece. You know, I think probably between Howard Rollins, who portrayed it in London and myself, I think it's probably the biggest stretch for the two of us being around the same age. Sorry, Cleavon, but I know how. Yes. So. So I think that's the biggest stretch. But that's part of the, you know, part of the challenge, you know, in this. It's the kind of piece that is so well written until you can really call on all of your technical skills and whatever little knowledge you've acquired over the years as an actor and try to put them together and see if you can pull it off. That's it. That's it. No, no, no, no, no. You gave it to me. No. All the way away. This is my fight. I won't get much better. I was thinking. I thought maybe the play is a bit wordy. Not to say that it's tedious, but it's a tremendous amount of dialog that you had to retain to do this part. Yeah. You know, How do you do it? How long do you have the script before you actually. Well, my training was good. Everyone always said, How do you remember all those lines? But I was in the trenches. In the trenches with playwrights like Ron Milner. It's as as Ron's plays are well-written this also it was extremely well-written. You know, I can say this and I can use this and I can. That's not it is the thought behind it. So you don't really remember Guys memorize the words, you memorize the thought. But it is a big discussion. You won't hear it, but I will, too. How do you got? I'm not going to be a model in the sixth round of both. No show. I just keep punching till I get pressure. The special.
