They didn't count on including their trip to the hospital and their ride. No, they didn't. About 20 children on school bus headed to Northwest Middle School were treated for minor injuries after an accident near Hampstead. Authorities say the bus collided with a Ford Bronco on Carrollton Road near LEAs Mill Road. The children were taken to Carroll County General Hospital as a precautionary measure. Police say they were complaining of neck problems. The driver of the Bronco was cited for negligent driving. A Parkfield man is in custody at this hour after turning himself in to police for the murder of his wife. 50 year old David Lindsay is being held without bail, charged in the shooting death of his wife, Darlene, a teacher at heart of Park Middle School. Police believe have been searching for him all day yesterday after finding his wife dead in their second Avenue home yesterday morning. The couple's four year old daughter reportedly told police she saw her father shoot her mother. Lauren Dean is being held at the Townsend Detention Center. Also in custody today is a 16 year old accused in the murder of a Baltimore County cab driver last week. James Smith is being held without bail pending a bail review hearing later today. A teenager in Louisiana took a school bus filled with students on a terrifying ride this week. The 14 year old allegedly tried to hijack the bus by putting a loaded gun to the bus drivers head. She told him she blow his brains out if he didn't take her to Houston. That's where she wanted to see her father. And she pulled a gun on the back of my head and said, You drive and don't stop. Were you scared? Yeah. You're scared? I was on the seat. As for impatient, you can't wait for the cops. When the bus stopped at an intersection, some students in the back were able to signal a driver behind them to call for help. No shots were fired, and the teenager was captured when she tried to run from the bus. She's facing kidnaping and weapons charges. Three fires in three hours kept Baltimore City firefighters running throughout the night. The first was a two alarm run, a house in the 1400 block of Mount Street. It broke out about midnight and firefighters quickly called out a second alarm. Fortunately, no one was hurt. Investigators say the fire was deliberately set. A couple hours later, flames were seen coming from a house in the 1900 block of West Lexington Street. A baby and two adults were injured in the fire and all are still hospitalized. Authorities say that blaze was accidental. Finally, firefighters were called to a house on Gorsuch Avenue for yet another fire. No one was hurt in that blaze. The cause of that fire is still under investigation. A loud crash early today woke up a lot of people living in a northwest Baltimore community. The first lady continues her sales campaign for health care reform on Capitol Hill today. Hillary Rodham Clinton told the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee the plan will make American workers both more secure and more productive. One of the issues that worries me a great deal is how alienated and how insecure many of our people seem to be. Clearly, in material ways, they are not less well-off than my parents and grandparents were during the Depression. But in psychological ways, they feel that the future is closing in on them, that they aren't taken care of, that they can't count on their children having the same kind of opportunities as they did. And I don't think there's anything more important to establish than the fact that they will not have to worry about health problems that come up and that might undermine their sense of security. As House members did yesterday, senators from both parties peppered Mrs. Clinton with questions of just how the reform plan would work and whether it would create more problems than it solved. Over 150 Baltimore County seniors and caregivers attended a seminar today on how to safely manage medication. Senior citizens make up less than 15% of our population. So as the sun was coming up, we have swung the camera off to the east and got some beautiful sunrise over here. Once you get out far north and west, 58, Harrisburg, 59 and Hagerstown, 57 in Columbia. But in general, throughout the metro grid and on off to the east and southeast, we're looking at mid 60s. It should stay relatively nice here for a few more hours. Of course, the day is getting a little bit shorter. So once you get your daytime high, it doesn't tend to plateau and then gently drop. It tends to peak and start dropping. We are going for an overnight low of 44 tonight as cold air really starts to filter into the region with a I guess you could call it an upper air disturbance. And here with us today is Dr. Patricia Schmoke to tell us more. Welcome. Thank you so much for having me here. Why do they call the Race for the Cure? Well, breast cancer, as you know, is being discovered in many women, up to 1 in 8 in some studies. And what we're trying to do is to, one, try to cure women by having them have early diagnosis. But as you know, even though 90% of women are cured in the early stages, there are still some women who are not found in early stages or have a particularly aggressive type of cancer. So more research needs to be done. You have a personal interest in this Race for the Cure. I sure do. One of the questions came from Maryland Senator Barbara mikulski. It reminded Mrs. Clinton on her recent visit to her restaurant in Fells Point. As you were talking, Senator, I was thinking back to our morning at Jimmy's Diner and all of the people who told us their stories and every one of those was a responsible, taxpaying, hardworking American citizen. Every single one of them. And every one of them was having trouble getting affordable health care that would be available to them. And I think it is important that we have a system in which many different kinds of health plans can compete. Mrs. Clinton said the administration administration's plan will provide special compensation, but what she called mission driven hospitals and doctors, those who provide care to patients no one else wants. Under the administration plan, more hospitals may model themselves after a facility right here in Baltimore. In fact, Hillary Clinton toured the Johns Hopkins outpatient center this past June. Healthwatch reporter Sandra Pickney says it's barely a year old, but already it's getting high marks. That's because it's set up differently from other traditional hospital centers. It's the kind of hospital today that we're going to need in the future. This is Johns Hopkins outpatient center. Each day, 1200 patients walk through these doors for checkups, treatments and surgeries. But the first thing that hits you is that it looks more like a hotel or an airport, not a hospital. We register patients in advance of the day of their appointment so that when they come here, they already have their boarding pass, their seat assignments and their ticket, and they go directly to their gate or to the location of their appointment.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136327/file/252902#t=2849.11,2947.33"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136327/file/252902/transcript/71118/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Do you have your hospital card with you today? Mayor Schmoke drops out and Cardin's name resurfaces right away. In his days as Maryland Speaker of the House. Everybody said Ben Cardin was a shoo in to be governor one day. He's smart and he knew every nuance of state government. Slight problem. The last time he thought about it, he never got out of the gate. But some say it's not quite what he's always had in mind. What a run for governor this time. An educated guess is it's a long shot. In this edition, Dr. Robert Bailey talks about advances in laparoscopic surgery. Just imagine having major surgery and reducing your recovery time by 2 to 4 weeks. Today, it's possible with a remarkable new technique called laparoscopy using tiny surgical instruments and a video scope. Surgeons can now treat many common diseases like gallstones and hernias. Laparoscopy only requires 3 to 5 tiny incisions that are less than half an inch in size. As a result, there is minimal scarring, less post-operative pain, and a faster healing and recovery period. At BMC, surgeons have to pass a strict training and credentialing process before being allowed to perform these procedures. If you're having surgery, find out if you're a candidate for the latest advances in laparoscopy. He says, Why don't you stop by the Yankee clubhouse, Come on and say hello to the guys. I'd love to see you. So my stepbrother Carl Taylor pitches batting practice for the Yankees. And I went in there to see Carl, and I signed a few more autographs. That really makes you feel good. I bet it does. It really does. They got this game. Well, you have 339 home runs. Maybe that had a little bit to do with it. You know, I don't know. But it does make you feel real good. That's terrific. The right team's Mike Shu has a live report from Annapolis. Now, just 24 hours ago, it wouldn't be safe to be where I'm standing right now. Shootings happened almost every night and drug dealing was a constant out here in these parking lots. Besides the constant patrol, help will come in the form of a job and health fair and a special clean up by prison inmates currently in a boot camp. Community leaders hope the difference will be felt long after the troopers are gone. Even if they're pulled out within a month, I'm hoping that the residents of the community will continue to strive to keep drugs and violence out of the community for the safety of everyone. No sign. And if this works well, plans are already in the works to do this for another bad neighborhood. I can share that with you. Wouldn't be a surprise.
