I'm Sally Thornton. And I'm Guy Jackson. Here's what people are talking about tonight. Another day, another house goes up in flames, another fatal fire. It is a painful story Eyewitness News has had to tell you about four times in just five days. Despite quick action and heroic efforts, an elderly man was killed today in West Baltimore. And this time, two city firefighters were also heard battling the smoke and flames. Eyewitness News is live in the 900 block of West Fayette Street where Ron Matz has the latest. Ron, a personal note. This is the third fatal fire that I have covered in the past four days. This tragedy unfolded just before 11:00 this morning. One firefighter was seriously hurt. Fire radios crackled on West Fayette Street. You could see the smoke at the rear of 933. It was dark and cloudy. It was really. A lot of smoke. Dangerous. A lot of. Medic units raced to the scene. One city firefighter was injured, falling from a ladder trying to reach the elderly man on the second floor. He was making entry in the rear portion of the house, fell from the ladder and apparently injured his back. Take a look at this kerosene heater. Investigators say this sparked the fatal fire on the second floor that you could barely move, you know, barely moving. A neighbor, James Jones, told me. The man who died was in frail condition. The rest said they could barely walk, didn't know how to get to the bus stop, you know, and walk very, very slow with the cane, you know, very, very slow. Wow. It's sad for Michael Pilgrim, who returned to his old neighborhood today to express his concern for the aging buildings on this street. I think that they should have been down a long time ago. You know, it should have been condemned and no one should have been living in them, especially if they were elderly. Firefighters had to battle the rain as well as the smoke. With the building now condemned, thoughts turn to the fallen firefighter taken to shock from a fireman fell and hurt themselves coming in on a ladder. So that job is just as hard, too. And sadly, minutes ago, we got an update on the most seriously injured firefighter. 36 year old Karl Zimmerman suffered a crushed vertebrae in his lower back. He is undergoing surgery at this hour.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701#t=114.28,225.73"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701/transcript/62504/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Add shock trauma. Brian, you mentioned two firefighters with the condition of the other firefighters, the other firefighters identity not released as yet. He suffered second degree burns on his left wrist. He's being treated at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Burns Center. Firefighter Karl Zimmerman, who was injured in that fall, is a nine year veteran of the city fire department. He works out of Rescue one, sadly. That's the very latest from West Baltimore. Now back to you. Ron Mattes live in West Baltimore. Thank you. Firefighters tell Eyewitness News all four of the fire victims this year have been senior citizens. If you have a wood stove in your house, this next story might save your life and your house. Howard County firefighters raced to West Friendship early this morning on Roxbury Road when the house went up in flames. Investigators say someone left the ashes from a wood stove on the porch. That's what ignited the fire. No one was hurt, but losses totaled more than $100,000. But scary wakeup call in Glen Burnie this morning. One man was rushed to the hospital and everybody else is ordered to stay inside after a chemical cloud drifted overhead. Alex Dimitri reports. The only good thing was the timing. Sky Chopper 13 circled above refractory composites where a worker had been transferring methyl tri cozily about 20 gallons of the chemical spilled. And when it hit the air, it turned into acid vapor. Hydrochloric acid is an irritant. It's a very pungent, strong odor. And if you get it around any of your mucous membranes, you'll know it starts to burn very bad. Like the vapor cloud hung in this parking lot for about an hour, held low to the ground by humidity. Then the wind picked up and the cloud began to drift right over the small neighborhood of Acres Lake. Rather than evacuate and expose people to the acid. The fire department told neighbors to stay inside because that would actually stay in. You know, finally, just before seven, the air heated up enough to dissolve the acid cloud so early, many never even knew what drifted over their heads until after they woke up. Next time you need a prescription filled at the drugstore, you'll never guess who might be doing it. Eyewitness News is live in Bel Air, where Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lin has more on a brand new way to help pharmacies. It might even remind you of that Star Wars character, R2-d2. Hi, Kelly. Well, hi, Kate. Not quite. Did you see that big case back there? That is it. That is the robot known as Rapid Script. This is an exciting new approach to filling prescriptions faster. Getting your prescription filled at a drugstore pharmacy just got easier. Real life pharmacists like Jeff Cohen are relying on help from robots. I'm able to take doctor's calls to counsel patients on their medicines more because we don't have to go and pick every drug from from the shelf. What is rapid script? Rapid script is a Rite Aid's exclusive automated dispensing system. It allows us to count and label most frequently prescribe 200 drugs that doctors write prescriptions for. Pharmacist and rapid script director Mary Beth Obudu showed me how it works. The pharmacist enters a prescription into the computer, evaluates the patient's profile, then sends the information to the robot. From here, the robotic arm will grab the appropriate size valve in the robotic cabinet. Once it grabs the appropriate size valve, it will then carry it over to the cell that contains the drug. Now, if you notice, there's a barcode on that cell. There's a laser scanner that scans that barcode to ensure that the proper prescription is given to the patient.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701#t=529.1,636.68"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701/transcript/62504/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The robot labels the container. Thanks very much. Nice to be here. It's nice to have you here. The show has really taken off. I mean, it's been on the air for, what, now, two and a half years? Yes. We're into our third season. We're getting ready for a number. Number four. Did you think it would be successful when you first started out? When it first started, you never really certain of a syndicated show usually think, you know, 13 way of first starting week. See if you get through it. Right. Once we got through that, I knew the show was going to take off. One reason being is that 40% of the show is really provided by the audience. They're sending in their home videos. It keeps it keeps growing and growing and growing. So everybody thought, you know, after the first year, you know, you're not going to have enough and you're going to run out of videos. Yes, we get too many too much material out there. What's the most unbelievable piece of video you've ever seen? Unbelievable. A alligator handler in Florida who stuck his head in an alligator's mouth and never had any problems before. But the alligator this time was in a bad mood. It was in a very bad mood. Actually, what happened was he had some sweat that dripped on the alligator's tongue. And in the minute anything touches the alligator's tongue, his jaws clamped shut like involuntary pull. Exactly. And this guy. And he needed like, 4 or 5 people to pry open the alligators. Just he got out of it. Okay? And a fractured jaw and a punctured skull. And he's okay, but he says he won't do it again. And you've been in Baltimore. Your show has filmed things. I know. The Lexington Terrace implosion. We're going to take a look at that while we're talking. How many cameras did you use on the shoot? Now, we usually have cameras around and we're real TV is done is we put cameras actually inside the implosion. So you're going to see it as if you are inside there. One of the things we try to do on real TV is we try to put cameras in strange places so it gives you a bird's eye view without getting hurt. You don't have to worry about. That's the key. Exactly. And you also mentioned in the piece that you had a rooftop camera against the advice of your insurance company. Well, it was a little bit of tongue in cheek. I mean, obviously, we we want to hold on to all our writer embellishment. Exactly. But ironically, you know, the camera survive a lot of the old cameras. And this is more TV talk that you and I would know. All the old cameras seem to survive implosions. The new ones don't. Hmm. Which is interesting. Mm hmm. You mentioned a lot of your video comes from your viewers. You have 40%. All right. What about the other 60 from various sources? Great affiliates like you. And a hockey game breaks out in the air in the stands there. Now, this the fight was was eventually stopped, took 20 minutes for the security guards to do it. They canceled the game. But this is a good indication of wherever you are, if you have your camera and you've got it all charged up, you're going to get some real TV. This is pretty brutal fight. Yes, cut above that. Neighbors found that crying infant in a plastic bag inside the garbage, even trying to do what's called, I said, a prayer for the baby and whomever else, you know, whoever had the audacity to stick a baby in a trash can, you know, it just completely boggles my mind. The baby is in critical but stable condition. It is unknown if the young mother will be charged. More on a story that might have scared you if you're expecting a baby. And that was quite a week in 1958, I'll tell you that much. Here is the precipitation from this morning. And look what's coming down from our southwest, moving toward our region. It's going to hit our area later on tonight, maybe en laboratoire. We'll start seeing some steady rain and maybe some moderate rain overnight, especially on the eastern shore. Before this system moves out of here, we'll start seeing some sunshine, I think, by tomorrow afternoon, but probably will rain from about midnight tonight to about maybe 11 or 12 tomorrow morning. So maybe another 10 or 12 hours of rain may pick up a half inch or more of rain out of this next system. That's one system gets out of here. Then we're watching another air precipitation already breaking out in the Midwest. And that particular system is going to get kind of interesting for us, we feel, by the weekend because the energy from that storm is going to reposition itself somewhere around Nashville, Tennessee, and then move out over the Atlantic Ocean by later Friday. There it is right now, a lot of energy in the upper jet stream bringing this air and this area of low pressure south eastward and then eventually gets off the East Coast and develops right along the Gulf Stream, moves up the East Coast. Now, traditionally, these storms can cause problems here as far as winter precipitation. The problem in predicting this exact storm will be exactly where the track of this storm is and how much cold air is allowed to get in here. It definitely looks like we'll see some precipitation Friday night and Saturday. You just never know what you're going to end up with. Technically, the rest of the state is in a drought, but thanks to this reservoir right here and the two others in the city system, if you're on city water, well, you have nothing to worry about. In fact, if we didn't have any rain at all for six months, we'd have enough water here for six months. So this reservoir is nearly full. So any additional rainfall would be wasted. We're very fortunate here in Baltimore. We we may very well be the exception to the rule. Back live over the Liberty Reservoir and Sky Chopper 13. Bob, now I have a question for you. Do you have any idea how many gallons of water there is in these three reservoirs? How many gallons? Yeah, I'd say maybe. How about 20 billion with a B With a B. Right. Okay. Billion. Quadruple that. 83 billion gallons of water. And right now, we're a little low. So that means that it's about 70 billion right now. Microscopic staph bacteria. Eyewitness News is live in Harford County, where Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lin says normally this is no big deal right now. Well, that's true, Sally. Normally, it isn't a big deal. But the problem is that many of these bacteria are changing. And as Alex Demetrius reports, it isn't necessarily for the better. Staphylococcus aureus loves blood. It thrives in it. Antibiotics keep that from happening. By destroying staph aureus when it gets inside and infects it, only some strains of the bacteria are fighting back. And I think this is a foreboding problem. I think it's a harbinger of bad things to come. This is an organism that causes human disease. And can cause fatal deadly disease. And I don't think anyone's going to dispute that. 14 year old Brandon Hilty wouldn't dispute it. He underwent 11 operations and months of antibiotic treatment to beat back a staph aureus infection in the upper bone of his arm. Like the Orthodox or the dentist. And it's important to realize that staff can happen to otherwise normal kids. And they they have to be sometimes treated surgically. But some strains of staph aureus are developing resistance through mutation and the absorption of genetic material. There are now cases of staff showing intermediate resistance to our most powerful antibiotics. That means that potentially lethal bacteria is only one step away from overpowering the cure by using more and more antibiotics. These organisms are smart. They, with time, will become resistant to any antibiotic we use. It became resistant to penicillin within a decade, then methicillin. And now it is adapting to vancomycin. We develop all of these antibiotics. We use them. And what we've found out is that the bugs are smarter than we are. So how did the bugs get so smart? Simple. You, me, a lot of us have been overusing antibiotics and we have been doing it for years. And the bugs are pills haven't killed, have adapted and become stronger than the medicine. Handwashing is the first line of defense against staph aureus since it lives on our skin. It also lives on tabletops and bedding and clothing in hospitals where the bacteria is the number one source of infection. Regular disinfecting, protective clothing and isolation are used to contain it. But still, 2 million people a year are infected as the bacteria enters the bloodstream through surgeries, catheters and IV drips. Once in, antibiotics are used and if it reaches the stage where only vancomycin will work, if it becomes highly resistant to vancomycin, we may have no antibiotics that can treat an organism that could kill the patient. It is nature's hardest lesson. Adapt or die.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701#t=2300.82,2415.03"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701/transcript/62504/annotation/25","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Alex Demetrius wjz, Eyewitness News. We're working on confirming the exact number. And we do know that one of the the numbers in the license tag has changed. And we will work on confirming that and we'll bring that to you at six. Your child may face the judge, but you could be facing the bills to make restitution to the victim. And as news you can use, Dick Gellman says, the trend is to make you pay. Yeah, you know, the courts today, Sally, really are leaning toward the area of increasing the responsibility of the parent, but not all the way, as you'll see. You know, it's one thing if your child breaks a neighbor's window with a home run. But what about deliberate acts of delinquency? Well, some cases result in thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Look at this. If caught, these kids are going to be charged as minors. If the court finds that that minor was guilty of an act of delinquency. The judge can order that you, your child or both be ordered to make restitution to the victim all the way up to $5,000. Now, you may be entitled to a hearing, but assuming that you are the parent, chances are with things like this, you are going to be told you have to pay.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701#t=2735.66,2818.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701/transcript/62504/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Again, though, it is simply up to $5,000. That's the limit in, you know, in a delinquency case against the kids. And I'll tell you, some cases have even gone this far when parents didn't have custody of the kid. In other words, the kids are somewhere else. They don't have custody. And the courts have still said you have that responsibility. That video, first of all, I have to say, isn't it amazing? Amazing. I mean, just makes me insane. Second of all, what about not those acts of vandalism kind of cases, but an accident in a car? Well, you know, now you're on the civil side. When you're talking about the civil side, you're talking let's say the kid does something negligently, you know, either in the car or somewhere else. What the courts have basically said is, no, the parent is not responsible unless the parent basically approved of the kids negligent act. In other words, knew of it ahead of time and somehow approved of it. But there is no automatic responsibility just because your kid did something, you are responsible. You have to have known of it or approved of it or you should have known of it. So it's funny, you know, in the criminal side. Yes, the civil side most likely know it sounds kind of random. Yeah. You're welcome. More of what you were talking about at the top of the hour. Denise is in the Newsroom with a preview of Eyewitness News at 6:00. Hi, there is my God. The Scott Mitchell thing is still out there. Where do you stand with this guy? Scott Mitchell, quarterback for the Detroit Lions, apparently is going to be available and could be a raven. Yes. We had dinner with Scott last night, David Modell, Brian Billick, Tony Agnon and myself, along with Scott, a very good dinner. I came away impressed with Scott Mitchell. There's some mechanics that has to be done between us and Detroit to work this trade out. It could take quite some time to get it done, but we're highly interested in it, interested in Scott and he's interested in us. And you feel like there's a high probability the deal will get done At this point, yeah, I'm always optimistic. The glass is always half full with me, so I think we can get the deal done. And Jim was at the office today and sit down with Brian and and Brian basically told him, he said, you know, when I got here, you know, we had Brad, we had Scott and we had Jim Harbaugh, you know, and if it don't work out, Jim, you are a quarterback. You know, if everything falls through. Jim, you're a tough spot. Can you go handle that right now? Yeah, he is. I think he's mentally he's a very mature person. I think he's got a strong personality about himself and he can handle it. But we will also do with Jim Harbaugh what Detroit has done with Scott Mitchell. We will give him permission to talk to other teams, but they have to talk to us first. Okay. But he's got paper left here, so it would have to be a trade. There would have to be some accommodations. Exactly right. There has to be a trade. Here's what people are talking about tonight. A Maryland man's promising career in the Marines is cut short by a brutal hate crime that left him paralyzed for life. The fate of five white men who admit they beat Lance Corporal Carlos Colbert was decided late today inside a San Diego courtroom. Dennis Edwards has been following the story and joins us with the very latest on their sentencing. Dennis Dennis, the ringleader in this brutal beating of a Forest Hill man, received the longest sentence. Jesse Bryant Lawson will spend nine years behind bars. The five defendants had trouble looking at Lance Corporal Carlos Coburn from his wheelchair in the middle of a San Diego courtroom. If we can reduce it by 500 cases a month with just are the judges working right now, we can add on several hundred more cases and we can continue to chip away at this process. This building is so old, it presented additional dangers to city firefighters. At one point, they were ordered off the roof. The integrity of the building is somewhat questionable, and we're doing what we can to make it as safe in operation for firefighters as we possibly can. Take a look at this kerosene heater. Investigators believe this started the fatal fire. Neighbors gathered at the scene to think about the man who died here and the firefighter who fell trying to save him. He walked with a cane, even walking as far as Lexington Market about ten blocks away. And I'm told that Mr. James was 96 years old. On Earth Day comes when we face the sun and night arrives When we're facing away from the sun, we're not facing the same, but on different planets. The length of days and nights may vary. For instance, since Pluto is so far away from the sun, it's probably very little difference between night and day. In fact, on Pluto, the sun looks like just a star that we see at night would just see a star, a bright, freezing cold. They're very, very cool. And why is it the planet above Venus would be that? To find out if that is really legal, we get Gellman for a look at more of your rides on the job. Yeah, this is Guy. Unfortunately, he's going to make a lot of people very unhappy, including us. Well, but what about unions? Well, you know, there are going to be some exceptions for unions. But I'll tell you, you know, unions are still a minority in the country. You know, there's a federal law that has been on the books since 1938 to make sure that workers are treated fairly on the job. It limits the workweek to 40 hours, requires a minimum wage and the payment of overtime. But as you'll see, not always. When you took the job, you were told what was expected. Your responsibilities were outlined in the benefits reviewed. You'd be paid for 40 hours a week, get two weeks of vacation, and be eligible for the company's pension plan.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701#t=6530.4,6625.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115833/file/219701/transcript/62504/annotation/65","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But now things have changed. Your company wants more of your time. You'll be working an hour of overtime every day, but your pay won't be going up no matter what kind of job you do. You would think that overtime is overtime. After all, you are coming in earlier and you're staying later. You're spending more time here than at home. You have less time for yourself. So whether you work in the mailroom or in the boardroom, you would think that you would get over time. But that's not the way it works. Depending upon the type of job you have or where you work, you may be exempt from the requirements of federal law that normally require that overtime be paid. The biggest category of exempt workers are executive, administrative and professional employees, which would include teachers and administrators in elementary and secondary schools. They aren't entitled to overtime. Also not entitled to overtime are outside salespeople. Seasonal workers at amusement parks. The people who deliver your newspapers. Workers at small farms. Those who care for children or the elderly. Even get this reporters at certain kinds of TV stations are exempt. Of course, the result may be different if the employee is a member of a union that has a collective bargaining agreement with the employer. But short of that, exempt workers are not entitled to overtime and may be required to work more for less. Now, the list of these kinds of job classifications goes on and on. But this just sort of gives you a flavor of what the overall ones. Okay. You said executives, professionals or administrators in this building. We know that there's certain people who are managers. It is. And, you know, in defining it is finding out who's in there is tough.
