Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. John. Now, what's rarely seen in Studio C this day. Joining us here on this Friday, August 5th, 1994, one of those fine fellows from Forest Hill. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. All right. What do you want? It's a cloudy, humid morning. Did you say it was raining? Yes, I did. Thank you very much. The Eyewitness News management, of course, also chiming in this day. Yeah, it is a cloudy, humid morning. But these clouds, that's that front we've been watching all week. Right now, it's going to take us I like to sometimes say a hemispheric change in the forecast to keep cool dry air out of the area this week. We have a really, really encouraging forecast for us. For real, 75 degrees right now. Let's go ahead and take a look at the deal and we'll get on with the show today. We're going to call it primarily damp. We have about a 70% chance of moisture throughout this day. Go ahead and call it a high of 81 degrees and maybe a couple of thunderstorms mixed in with this rain this day. Tonight, we've got to keep some clouds of showers in the forecast early, but overnight, we're going to go ahead and call it some clearing. Noticeably less humid and cool. Check this out, folks. A low of 61 degrees tonight. Ooh, yeah. Turn off that AC becoming sunny tomorrow. Less humid. Cool. It is a high of 79 degrees. Tomorrow is going to be such a delightful change of pace, Joe. It's going to really be a good weekend. And Sunday looks just as fine. 75 now here on TV, 77 in D.C., 78 degrees in Salisbury. It is really got a good push to it and it is certainly going to make it through the area. Cool, dry air to move into the region. Got great great weekend forecast. If you go on to the beach, you're going out to the Rocky Gap Music Festival out west, out near Deep Creek Lake. Are we just staying in town? The weather is absolutely, positively going to cooperate. Spring like weather in the area this weekend. Next week, back to heat and humidity. But for the next couple of days, how to stop. Take a breath of blessed relief. Five days worth of accu weather. About six. Don, thank you. Just past 532. Here's what's happening newswise this morning. Another sweep by city police as they try to rid southeast Baltimore of drugs and drug dealers. Federal agents and more than 100 Baltimore law enforcement officers converged on the Perkins Homes housing project late yesterday, arresting at least 20 suspected street level drug dealers. A few blocks away, police also confiscated three kilos of cocaine with a street value of 80,000 bucks, more than $10,000 in cash, lots of handguns. Three alleged kingpins from the Dominican Republic were also arrested. The raid, part of Operation Clean Sweep, was the climax of a two month surveillance operation in yesterday's drug bust as a continuation of the ongoing police effort to rid the city of illegal drugs. Baltimore City Mayor Kurt Schmoke is trying to set the record straight on some transfers inside the city police department. This week, Police Commissioner Tom Frazier announced the transfers of three black police district commanders, prompting a charge by the local NWC president, George Bunton. The moves are not good for race relations in the city.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115762/file/219645#t=98.5,183.76"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115762/file/219645/transcript/62507/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The mayor says there was a misunderstanding caused by rumors which started flying before the transfers were announced. Some information got out about promotions and transfers before the commissioner was able to present it in total. I think that in the future he's going to work very hard to try to get all that information out before it hits the rumor mill. There were seven African-American majors when I arrived here. There are now nine. And it's certainly not a step backwards in any sense. And I was very careful that the rotations were sensitive and and the promotion process has been reflective. And I'm confident that once we take a good look at the numbers, that'll that'll be real evident. Major Elvin Winkler, one of the commanders being transferred, says he has no problem with the commissioner's decision since it is part of his policy to rotate commanders. Embattled national ACP director Benjamin Chavis says he will not quit. Yesterday, he headed to Washington to make an announcement, which many assumed would mean his resignation. They were wrong. Even though U.S. officials are calling on him to quit. And two chapters in two states are threatening to withhold their money. Shaver says he's keeping his job. Calls for his resignation came after Chambers gave a former employee $300,000 out of court settlement. With the money coming from the NAACP coffers. The employee apparently filed a sexual discrimination and harassment suit against Chavis. Several different law enforcement agencies are interested in a man charged with using the name of a murder victim to get a phony driver's license. 20 year old Brian Everett is being questioned by the Secret Service, the VA, the postal inspection team and Baltimore County homicide detectives. Yesterday, it looked like the players were going to call an immediate work stoppage in retaliation for the owners withhold. An $8 million payment to the players pension fund. But after winning the executive council, the players said they were taking the high road on this one. Maybe just because the owners are behaving in an irresponsible and provocative manner, it does not mean the players have to do so. Their object is to try and reach an agreement. Unless we see some change in these attitudes. This strike is going to happen and it's going to continue for a substantial period of time. Also, you should know the Orioles front office is right now putting together a plan to provide refunds for ticket holders should the strike happen next Friday. Continue with sports and that sport. The Orioles are playing like they have already gone on strike. Last night, they lost their second in a row and are in danger of falling completely out of the playoff picture now. It was a turn back the clock night in Milwaukee as both teams were 1970 style uniforms for the game. The Orioles took an early two nothing lead, partly due to a run scoring single from Brady Anderson. But late in the game with the score tied 3 to 3. John Jaha doubled to the wall and the field scoring Greg Vaughn to give the Brewers the lead. They would never give up the final. The Brewers five. That put that bent paperclip in my glove compartment we talked about yesterday. Well, just do it every time. Actually, actually, it took me a while to figure out the clock. I did have to consult the manual on that. The radio? You forget about it? Yeah. It's one of these deals. It tries to walk you through it. And then when you get to like the end of two pages of very detailed instructions, it says, if you have any questions, call your dealer. It's not electronic. All this digital. Yeah. So how do you set up? And he said the radio. I was just going to go because I'm going to go check if you heard the forecast yet. Oh, you know what, buddy? This thing is coming to fruition. I tell you what. Take a look at national radar. I want to show you our South. Here's that front setting out to the west big time. And it is going to be cruising through our area. We are expecting a little moistening out to the west and expect showers in the area today with a high of 81 degrees. And then seriously, Chuck, check it out tomorrow. Mostly sunny, 79 and sunny, sunny 84.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115762/file/219645#t=1184.41,1264.69"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115762/file/219645/transcript/62507/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So maybe a lot of people don't blow this weekend. Get out of hacksaw and take off the top. Good advice. Monday, you can plan on doing something else. I think. Go back shopping and put it back on. Okay. With this news. This time last year, four college students were preparing for going back to school by spending 28 days visiting 28 different ballparks, all of them in the U.S., I think all the major league parks anyway. 20,000 miles is what they were going to do. They'd done a couple before they got to Oriole Park at Camden Yards. And we talked to them about the trip so far and the reasons behind it. We figure this is our last year. You know, we got we're in college, no real responsibility. We can just take off and do this. When it started, I thought maybe I'd just be exhausted. I want to get the thing over with. But the way things are going, I just wanted to last forever. At this point, they were seven days into it. They started out in Seattle and they were going to finish up August 25th in San Francisco. One of the great regrets of my life. There goes hey, look at it. They broke the budget on that animation. What? What a graphic we had last year. Whew. Is there any way to see that again? Yeah. Former presidential counsel Bernard Nussbaum left Washington in the spring under a mountain of criticism for his handling of the Whitewater affair. The former White House aide faced lots more criticism in an appearance earlier this morning before the Senate Banking Committee Whitewater hearings. Democrats and Republicans alike ripped into Nussbaum when he took the witness chair shortly before midnight. The lawmakers said he improperly interfered by talking Treasury Department official Roger Altman out of disqualifying himself for the Whitewater probe. Nussbaum strongly disagreed, telling the panel he never told Altman what to do, but only offered advice. In its commentary this morning, Michael Lasker wonders about a pattern of political untruth. The other day, a Helen Bentley press release announced Bentley has been endorsed for governor by the Maryland Greater Washington Board of Trade Political Action Committee. But when a Washington Post reporter asked him about it, the board called it a case of 50% overstatement. They said they were merely endorsing Bentley in the Republican primary and Paris Glendening in the Democratic primary. But they weren't backing anybody yet in the general election for governor. Confronted about the clear puffery, Bentley press secretary Key Kidder replied, I was hoping I could slip that past you. A few blocks away, police also confiscated three kilos of cocaine. The street value of $80,000, more than $10,000 in cash, along with some handguns. Three alleged kingpins from the Dominican Republic were also arrested. The raid, part of Operation Clean Sweep, was the climax of a two month surveillance operation. If this drug bust is part of the continuation of ongoing police efforts to rid the city of illegal drugs, Baltimore City Mayor Kurt Schmoke is trying to set the record straight on some transfers in the city police department. This week, Police Commissioner Tom Frazier announced the transfers of three police, three district commanders who are black, prompting a charge by the local NAACP president, George Bunting. The moves were not good for race relations in the city. But the mayor says that was a misunderstanding caused by rumors which started flying before the transfers were announced. Some information got out about promotions and transfers before the commissioner was able to present it in total. I think that in the future he's going to work very hard to try to get all that information out before it hits the rumor mill.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115762/file/219645#t=4294.29,4389.84"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115762/file/219645/transcript/62507/annotation/46","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"There were seven African-American majors when I arrived here. And one of the commanders being transferred, Major Elvin Winkler, says he has no problem with the commissioner's decision since he knows it's part of his policy to rotate commanders around. Several different law enforcement agencies are interested in a man charged with using the name of a murder victim to get a phony driver's license. 20 year old Brian Everett is being questioned by the Secret Service, the MVA, the Postal Inspection Service and Baltimore County homicide detectives. He was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged with using the name of murder victim John Semple to get a license. So far, Everett is not a suspect in the temple's unsolved murder, but he is charged with fraudulently attempting a drivers permit and no walk out just yet. But Major League Baseball players are still set to strike. One week from today. Yesterday, it looked like the players were going to go in and call an immediate work stoppage in retaliation for the owners, withholding an $8 million payment to the players pension fund. But after a meeting of the executive council, the players said they were taking the high road on this one just because the owners are behaving in an irresponsible and provocative manner. It does not mean the players have to do so. Their object is to try and reach an agreement. Unless we see some change in these attitudes. Thousands of bees still on the loose after a tractor trailer overturned, smashing hundreds of beehives which breed thousands of very unhappy bees. Some said almost a million. And of course, as bees were frankly looking for their highs and queen bees, no one was seriously injured. But the truck driver was trapped in a cab for a while by swarming bees. Firefighters sprayed the bees with sugar water, hoping to calm them down until beekeepers can salvage the hives. Science from post near the intersection of two interstates talking about keeping one is closed. Crews have worked through the night using floodlights to try and get the bees back in their container. And finally, we go back to New York City. It looks like infamous radio host, the king of all media, Howard Stern, won't be taking up residence in the governor's mansion any time soon. Stern, the legitimate candidate of the Libertarian Party for governor of New York, announced yesterday that he was pulling out of the race for New York's governor, not a candidate for governor, got 18 to 20% of the vote. And I'm not a candidate, and I guarantee I would win because my platform was simple. People like not only that's a lot of goofballs out there looking to vote. Deal is. And you got to understand, in New York, they watch this very closely. Polls had said Stern was going to get 15 to 20% of the vote, which would have swung the election away from, say, the political pundits up there. The man challenging Mario Cuomo.
