Police today have some new leads to follow one week after the murder of state Trooper Ted Wolf, police this afternoon are revising their descriptions of two suspects wanted in that killing. Suspect number one is now described as a dark complected man in his 20s with a stocky build, perhaps weighing 200 pounds. He has black straight hair, wears black frame glasses and speaks with a Spanish accent. The second suspect is described as tall and thin, also in his 20s with short black hair, he's described as dark complected as well with acne scars. The sketches showed up at the front door of a 7-Eleven in Lansdowne, a few miles from where the suspects apparently abandoned a stolen car. An employee at the store apparently waited on a man the morning of the killing who asked for directions to the Greyhound bus station who had blood on his right hand. Police won't say where the new descriptions of the suspects are coming from, although they have taken the videotape from the 7-Eleven security cameras. Investigators will neither confirm nor deny that they are tracing down leads from evidence found in the stolen car, which does indicate the suspects may be now in the Bronx of New York. The accident occurred well before dawn in the dark in the southbound lanes of the section of Interstate 83 known as the Harrisburg Expressway. It was parked on the shoulder and a tractor trailer also southbound for some unknown reason, went off the roadway and ran over the jeep. Causing the Jeep to roll over several times and the tractor trailer to go along the bank upsetting. Consequently, caught on fire. The fire was quickly put out by the first fire crews at the scene. But for as long as it burned, the driver was trapped inside the camp with it. And it may have been that that killed him. A fact and some others that weighed heavily on the firefighters here today. And once not long ago, ironically, we had one about a year ago today where we had approximately five people that was on. Killed on 83. I had a hard time getting over the last time and since I got here this morning, that hit me again. History repeats itself, I guess. And this morning just reinforced that back for me. The other fatal crash, both been referred to was this one from April 18th last year. A total of five people died from it. It, too, involved a tractor trailer and a jeep, as well as several other cars. We are saying that it is about time that we emphasize the many contributions of African-Americans throughout American history. And so far, the measure has been presented to both the Baltimore City Council and the city school board. I think that would be a terrible mistake for the school system to move toward toward such a curriculum. It's nice to have a time limit, but there's a long way to go yet. What the NFL commissioner did was put a time limit on a city's anxiousness by saying the NFL will expand possibly by 1992 and no later than 1993. We no longer have to sit here indefinitely like kids outside a bakery window. If we don't get it this time around, it'll be a long time before we get this kind of shot again. The good news is the commissioner says expansion is coming. The bad news is he's not the guy voting on this. It still comes down to the team owners voting on expansion and then it's still a toss up on whether Baltimore gets on the list or some other town does. You want a history of support for football, then it should be Baltimore, hands down. You want proven enthusiasm? Again, it's Baltimore. But owners don't look at these things. They look at the size of TV markets and advertising possibilities. The key advantage of mammography is its ability to detect suspicious lumps long before they could be felt, either because the lumps are too small or deeply hidden in the breast. It may not seem like a lot, but according to Boston radiologist Ferris Hall, too many breast biopsies are being performed for lumps that cannot be felt but are non-cancerous. He says the two main reasons are lack of experienced mammography and medical legal fears. Most of these mammograms are being read by people who haven't quite had as much experience. Perhaps they haven't had any training in mammography training and mammography has only been around for a decade. And the second reason is medical legal concerns. Physicians, radiologists, lawyers are simply afraid of being sued if they miss anything. In an AMA journal this month, Dr. Hall offers a partial remedy for less experienced demographers as well as surgeons and patients. He advises, seeking out a second opinion for biopsy. It's very easy to have those films sent to or brought to someone who has a lot of experience, and that person, I think, could very easily screen out 25% of the of the biopsies that were recommended and say we really don't need to do those, inevitably, says Hall. A few lesions undergoing follow up mammography rather than biopsy will turn out to be cancerous. There are very few cancers you'll miss and the few that you miss most of them. It wouldn't have made any difference. It's not as if you miss it. You don't miss it. You just delay the diagnosis. Screening mammography works. It saves lives. But many women can't afford them. A substantial part of the total cost of a mammography screening program is from biopsies for noncancerous lesions. Dr. Hall says if more technicians got a second opinion before biopsies, fewer biopsies would be done and that would make mammography more affordable and more accessible for all women.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527#t=5784.36,5890.05"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527/transcript/70851/annotation/54","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"This is Judy Johnson reporting. And that's remember, she's leaving Saturday at 2:00 on her world tour. Let's take a look what's going around our region. Temperatures have dropped to the west, upper 30s and 40s, and that's where the problems will be. There goes that t shirt problems will be tomorrow night and early Saturday as the snow accumulate out there. Yes, snow 1 to 4in generally I think will accumulate out in west around for us. We could see some snow tomorrow night and early Saturday morning as the colder air begins to move in and as the precip begins to leave, I don't think we'll see a lot. A northwest wind smart 10 to 20 will make it much cooler data more than it was today. We were only will only be in the 40s tomorrow close to 50. But today we are 63 degrees. So a drop coming up in the temperatures. Radar showing precip already in the form of rain and some snow showers up in Bradford. Mostly rain showers, no higher. Western P.A. Some of these showers could move in here as early as the morning hours. The bulk of the precip, however, will come with this mess that's developing down to ourself in Arkansas, Oklahoma.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527#t=6253.41,6349.71"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527/transcript/70851/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"This is some heavy stuff, even some watches and warnings out for severe weather in that part of the country because it's much warmer down there. And this is the precipitation that's building out over the central plains. Moisture from the Gulf, feeding it and watch out moves to the east very nicely. Here's Maryland right here. And on the northern fringe of that, with the cold air moving in, we could see some wet snow by late tomorrow night. Quick look, a quick look at for the clouds. There is a cloud activity moving our direction ever so slowly. Areas of sunshine. This was kind of day we had today. Beautiful. Tonight. The clouds only increase from the west. And as you can see, they're just on our doorstep out over western Maryland and West Virginia. Behind it, clear and cold air over the northern plains. I mean, cold. There'll be temperatures in the teens in many areas up there tonight. High pressure will move in after this mess gets out of the storm tomorrow. Radioactive garbage from Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana piling up over the next 30 years. What if they plan to put it in a dump next to your town and you couldn't do a thing about it? It's happening in Boyd County, Nebraska, and it's tearing the community apart. We'll take you to the place where the controversy is being fought out tonight. This is ABC News Nightline reporting from Washington. Ted Koppel. It's the landfill garbage dump phenomenon raised to The Nth Degree. Even though we all generate our share of garbage, you can locate the dump in somebody else's neighborhood. Thank you very much. And of course, when it comes to nuclear waste, this is something about which many of us have ambiguous feelings to begin with. That's nuclear, as in warheads, power plants, radiation that definitely belongs in somebody else's neighborhood. No, make that somebody else's state. What we are focusing on tonight is a controversy that owes much of its passion to the fact that many of us have been conditioned to fear nuclear radiation as we fear very few other things in the world. And we are instinctively convinced that if radiation from nuclear waste can get out, then somehow it will. Which brings us to the case of Butte, Nebraska, and the controversy that's tearing that town apart. Here's Jed Devore. What we have here is a rape taking place, and we've got our state government telling us learn to like it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527#t=7070.39,7208.16"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527/transcript/70851/annotation/65","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"If you drive around our communities, you can see we can use a few extra bucks. And I have to me, a man that's not afraid to take a back if you can get it and and use it wisely. And once we get the stigma of having contaminated products, whether it be meat, milk, grain or anything, what kind of market is there going to be for radioactive food? It'll probably take 2 or 3 generations before some of the bitterness is removed because, well, that shows up outside this drawing lines. Now the fight is pure emotion. There is very little rational discussion. Point County and the children, communities, church congregations, families have been torn by the fight over a plan for a dump for low level nuclear waste to be put in a field just west of Butte, Nebraska, in Boyd County. The divisions, the proponents. The opponents. Has caused us to be blind to the very purpose of our existence. In Nebraska, the purpose of existence has been since European settlers arrived. To raise corn, cattle and smart kids. They've kept this flat, open land clean for the most part, while making the plains enormously productive for the rest of America. Dr. Norm Thorson and Nebraska is chairman of a five state compact formed to create the nuclear dump. It was a decision that each state, as a matter of equity, would be responsible for disposing of low level waste that it generated. At the same time, Congress encouraged states to form compacts, recognizing that you didn't need or want 50 different disposal sites around the country. Nebraska joined Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana in a compact to find one place to dump the nuclear waste of all five. After years of study, a site in north central Nebraska was chosen.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527#t=7208.67,7325.6"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136103/file/252527/transcript/70851/annotation/66","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Pick the developer and, scientists say, solely on the basis of geology, the structure of the ground and the water beneath it. Boyd County, three miles west of the little town of Butte. You design a facility that shouldn't leak, but if there should be a problem in the facility, if it should fail, you want to have the site which still protects public health and safety. And that's what we have. We have redundant system on top of redundant system on top of redundant system. So help out. Mark Zinke is a veterinarian. His worries reflect those of many who have heard and seen and read the stories of Three Mile Island and Chernobyl and are unsettled by the doubts about anything nuclear. If this thing leaks and it will leak, it's not going to be something that's like antibiotics that we're fighting right now with with livestock or what everybody's complaining about. You ain't going to be able to hold that animal a couple of weeks and say, hey, that animal's clean and get. The developer of the dump, a company called U.S. Ecology, says it will spend $40 million to build an enormous storage shed with thick concrete walls and a roof that is to be sealed in 30 years when the dump is full. What goes in will look like ordinary garbage, trash from hospitals, nuclear power plants, anything that is radioactive.
