That's unusual. Did you ask? Nah. Do that. You're upset. Who is it? You come and sit on my knee. That'll run our way. Okay. Now, your name, Robert Singer, has spell secret for me. S e g e r i. Well, things. And it's okay. To your knowledge? Yeah. Close that door to compressor noise. Maybe these two might help also. Okay. Well, here, if you want, you can watch while you shut the doors. If you want to watch. Come on out. Come out here. Deck and use instead of in there. That's the. Okay. Now, to your knowledge, how old is the American Turner's Association or Club? Well, it goes back to 1846 and was founded in 1846. That's a hundred and almost 50 years old. Five years. Correct. All right. That's quite a quite a history with this crop. Long time long. And your family has been involved with the Turners for how long? My dad and mom each were 60 year members of the Turners, a very active and constantly involved. Here's a go. The Turners were known for teaching or for providing equipment for gymnasts. Explain that. Gymnastics that's exactly right there or called that that time. Germaine, your turn. Very meaning gymnastic work. And they were very active. They're instrumental in getting gym physical education in the public school system many years ago. And the woman conservative Lynch that I happen to have some footage of. She was a very active member of the terms. That's correct. Concetta was a member of the Turners and went to two Olympics, 1936 and 1940. She performed representing the United States and the Turners. So she was a very important part, I guess, of this organization. Absolutely. Yes. You. You. You join the Turner's.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136891/file/253903#t=1.26,165.65"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136891/file/253903/transcript/71638/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"When I've been in Turner's now since 66, 1966, as a member. Our mom and dad dragged us over to gym classes when we were little children, my brothers, two brothers and sister myself. We've been active for many years. Do you have a picture of your mom? Here. I think on the board there's a picture from years ago of your mother and father. Yes. So you say so your mother and father were were active members. Very active. They used to drag you all over to the gym. That's correct. Where was located then? At that time, it was in town right near North and Gay Street, 1846 North Gay Street. It's a big apartment style building. And so you have been a member since 1966? Yes. But you've been coming here for how long? Since probably about 1941, when I was a youngster. And your father has been coming to these. To the club for how long? Well, he was. It came. And since the 1920s, he. He and his good friend Leroy Martin represented the Turners in an Olympic Fest in Germany in 1921. Did your father participate as an Olympian? No. No, sir. This was just turned four turners in a turn. Very. What was your dad's name? Hey, Neal. I'll see Sucre. And your mom, Frieda, for you to see her. When did the how come that the club no longer is involved with the gymnastics? I think it's the trend of the times. The when we moved here, we still continue to gymnastics and the classes just dwindled off as the children got younger and younger taking part. And the more clubs that are doing it today or the after school type clubs that have tumbling and exercises. So the Turners now are a social club? Yes, basically we are.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136891/file/253903#t=166.16,303.94"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136891/file/253903/transcript/71638/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yes. So you guys, the Turners now are the sponsor men's softball team? That's correct. What area? And the northern Baltimore County area. Is there a league that they. Yes. What is that? The. It's a council Wednesday evening leg. So it's met men softball and they compete nationally with the Turner Society's national. And how they make out sleep fair. Fair to good. Just fair. Yes. Well, you can't be you can't be one as all I know, the when I was here the other night, I saw all I saw folks out on the dance floor having a wonderful time. I asked how many of those people were members? Probably maybe third. A third? 30%. I was I would been on a Friday evening. Yes, 34. And the rest of bus rest are just outsiders who come for the good times that we provide here at the hall. So you all have you have dances here for for the public? That's correct. You're open to the public. Yes. And the money you make on those dances, What do you make any money on those? Well, what little we make on the dance is goes to support of the club and the sponsorship of the sporting team. The softball team. Jermaine, your turn. Verheyen Germania Turn Verheyen. Yes. So obviously that was. Started off as a German or very much a German social club from many, many years ago. You mean German immigrants would come over here and get together with other German folks at the exact well, how did they get into the gymnastics? Well, in about 1909, they formed the gymnastic groups. In fact, at that time, they even had a drum and bugle for to participate. So they called it the German Turners Club, did they not? Yes. And then during the, what, the First World War with Germany, what happened? Well, it continued on. At that time, there were 4 or 5 German societies in the state and it continued on through the First World War and the Second World War. About 1941, they changed the name. Germania turned Verheyen to American Turners because of the national feeling. And then in 19 about 48, the last other forwards turned Verheyen merged with Baltimore Turner's and and that is where we are today. So now the surviving society. The so the the the that nationally it's known as the American church. That is correct. Locally, this group here is called the Baltimore Turner American Turner's Baltimore American Turner is called. Definitely. Definitely. We provide a good evening at a very reasonable price. And they love to come out and dance and drink a few drinks and have a good time. So it started off 145 years ago as a social club. Yes. Once again invites people to come in and have a good time. That's right. We've probably completed the cycle back to where we were, at least for now. For now and the future, who knows where. Go forward from here. You might even someday very soon, sponsor another Olympic champion. Who knows? Always hoping for that. A source of great pride to to be connected with that aspect. And certainly one of the most the more outstanding members of the of the Turners was Concetta Lynch. Very much so, yes. I admired her as a as a child. She was much she was a little older than I. And we looked up to her and we would watch her train and practice. And we're very proud to see her go on to do the Olympics and did very well in the Olympics. So who knows?
