Another case of meningitis strikes a Maryland high school student. We have a live report. Can you believe it's been one week since a school massacre at Columbine High? Tonight, grieving the grieving and the search for answers continues. And coming near two, it's coming soon to a store near you, a diaper that could save lives. Kelli Lin has that story. And help watch in. Too bad we don't have smell of vision because another Krispy Kreme has opened up in Maryland. It's our hot, fresh and crispy edition of Eyewitness News at 5:00. And it's next. Live from WJC 13. You've got Baltimore's Bieber of news team now. Eyewitness News. Hello, everybody. I'm Sally Thornberry. And I'm Kate Jackson. Here's what people are talking about tonight. A school that's been in our thoughts and prayers all week is Columbine High. Exactly one week ago today, two students opened fire, killing 12 fellow students and one teacher before killing themselves. And the grief from that school massacre continued today as more victims are laid to rest. Our team coverage begins with Denise Koch, who is live with the latest on the investigation into the shootings Denise. Well, Sally, unfortunately tonight there are still more questions than answers surrounding the devastating rampage. And while police search for clues, Littleton residents continue to grieve. One week after the Columbine High School shootings, Littleton came to a halt for one minute at 11:21 a.m., the exact moment of the shooting. After the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. Investigators have not made any arrests and are still facing many key questions. Among them, did Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold have help carrying explosives into Columbine High School? Did anyone purchase weapons for the shooters? We're under the impression that someone assisted them in that.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076#t=2.72,114.96"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076/transcript/71187/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Who and when? What are still kind of unclear to us right now. Police believe the girlfriend of Dylan Klebold purchased at least two of the guns used in the attack. But officials say if those weapons turn out to be a rifle or a shotgun, the girl did not break any laws. She was questioned Monday and is described as a witness. Investigators are also looking very closely at a sensational diary written by Eric Harris, hoping it will provide evidence of conspirators. Meanwhile, services are being held for three more students today in Littleton, including Matthew Kester, an athletic 16 year old junior who had hoped to start for the football team. And in Colorado today, the House of Representatives passed a resolution calling for Howard Stern to be kicked off the air. They say the shock jock made offensive and thoughtless remarks about the shooting. That resolution passed 57 to 4. Sally. Thanks, Denise. On Monday, Columbine High School students will go back to class, but they'll be at a different school. Chatfield High schools all over the country have been getting bomb threats since the Colorado school massacre. In fact, if you live in Baltimore County, your teenager may have been forced out of school today. Someone called in bomb threats to Owings Mills. Woodlawn and Pertapis go high schools. Around 7:00 this morning. Bomb squad swept the schools. Fortunately, they didn't find anything. Police tell Eyewitness News that making a false threat is a crime and they intend to crack down on the culprits and press charges. They suggest students be given a hotline to report suspicious activity. They also would like grief counseling for students who have personal experiences with crime. And new at 6:00, we're going to hear about the crisis plan and what you think of it. One week to the day after the Colorado school shooting, President Clinton is taking steps to get guns out of the hands of children. He's proposing new legislation that would among other things, it would hold parents responsible when their kids commit crimes with guns. The court is live with more on the proposed bills and more about what you think about the idea of Vic. Well, Kyra, the president's crime package is being hailed as the most comprehensive gun legislation in the U.S. in more than 30 years. Seven days isn't long enough to get over the horror of the Columbine shooting. Now, the disturbing information. There were guns and explosives in plain view in one of the suspect's houses. Today, after a moment of silence, President Clinton asked lawmakers to step up and make a difference. We need help. We can pass all this If the American people want it bad enough, we can pass it all. If the American people want it badly enough. And we don't need to go through another Littleton for the American people and want it badly enough. You can help make sure that happens. Today, the president proposed gun control legislation to bar anyone under 21 from owning a handgun. To make safety locks mandatory on all guns and to hold parents accountable if their children commit crimes with guns. We have to redefine the national community so that we have a shared obligation to save children's lives. And we've got to get out of this crazy denial that this won't make a difference.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076#t=211.62,308.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076/transcript/71187/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's crazy. It won't make it. Just because it won't make all the difference doesn't mean it won't make a difference. It will make a difference. You told Eyewitness News what you think. You cannot keep track of your children 24 hours a day. No. I mean, you can do the best that you can, but I don't think that they're responsible. Kids are going to do what they're going to do with bad parenting. First, say, isn't it illegal if indeed they broke laws all doing it, that's a different story. It is very, very important for parents to know where your children are, what they're doing and how they're handling themselves. I believe they knew. They just didn't choose to do anything about it. It takes effort. I think the parents should be accountable for that. I think that it's a good beginning. I don't think that the parents are the only ones responsible. So I feel like this is a good first step, but there's lots more that needs to be done. And as part of the President Clinton's proposals, he wants background checks before anyone can buy weapons at gun shows. Vic Well, how much did the shootings in Littleton affect the president's decision on this legislation? Well, actually, not as much as you might think. In fact, this gun legislation package was put together long before the shootings in Littleton, Colorado. Vic, thank you very much. Stay tuned to Eyewitness News and CBS News for continuing coverage of the Colorado massacre and its effects in our area. We'll get an update on the school shooting later in the show. It's rare that a reporter can say that a murder victim was the kind of woman who had no enemies. I can say that about Jill Dando. See that axle rolling loose on 95? It landed on the windshield of burning Q six economy car. I swear to my left. Lucky enough, nobody was coming up the other lane. Friends and relatives continue to attend funerals as investigators continue to search for clues in the school massacre. It is far from over. Kyle Well, you didn't know me. We will continue the laughter in Your honor. Investigators are focusing on who may have helped the two young gunmen with their attack, either with the 67 unexploded bombs that were found or with buying guns. The 18 year old girlfriend of shooter, Dylan Klebold, may have purchased at least two of the guns used in the attack at a Colorado gun show. Yes, we can now confirm that she bought at least two weapons, which of the weapons she bought? I'm not sure. And late today, police discounted one possible clue in the shooting. They say a surveillance tape from a gun shop shows no indication Eric Harris was there buying weapons a few weeks ago. Vic? Thank you, Sally. Of course, starting Monday, Columbine High School students were returned to class at school a few miles away. Well, despite the heartache many of us are feeling in the wake of the Columbine shootings. Not everyone is so touched. Some people are using this tragedy to make life miserable for students across the country. For the second time in two days, a bomb threat was called in to the Washington, D.C. school system. So students from all 146 schools there spent much of the day outside while every building was checked in. So far, nothing has been found. And it's the same story here in the Baltimore area. More students are kept out of class as the copycat threats continue here. Students at Owings Mills High School were kept out of the building this morning after police received a call around seven that there might be a bomb in the school.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076#t=3705.84,3821.85"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076/transcript/71187/annotation/36","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Same story at Woodlawn High School and Botafogo High and Milford Mill High this morning. No bombs were found. Police hope to track down the anonymous callers and prosecute them. If your children go to Baltimore City schools, you should know officials already have a plan in place in case the worst happens. Today, parents got a preview of those security plans. Our team coverage continues now with Dennis Edwards, who reports parents use this meeting to make some suggestions for the safety of their children. The tourist, Sims Eagle, has a daughter at Dunbar High School. She was among more than 100 people who turned out to hear Baltimore City school officials talk about emergency plans already in place. I do not believe that we are at risk for that type of violence to happen here. However, any form of violence is something that we cannot tolerate. School administrators outlined plans designed to prevent or react to situations like the Colorado shootings. School police Chief Leonard Hamm talked about school police react squads that work with administrators when there are suspicions of drugs and guns in schools. We then randomly go in with hand-held scanners. A squad of about seven people. And we come in and we take a certain segment of that school and we sweep for weapons. Juvenile justice officials were on hand to talk about what happens to students who bring guns or call in bomb threats. For us, it's an automatic detention. So if they are arrested by the school police, of course, they are taken to a northern district. Parents and politicians have some recommendations of their own. They want school 800 numbers to be used as hotlines so students can call in crimes. Students and community leaders believe grief is a major cause for violence in schools.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076#t=3822.63,3922.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136491/file/253076/transcript/71187/annotation/37","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They say a number of students must come to school after seeing a relative killed or hurt, and they feel as though they have a need to come to school. Reverend Douglas Miles summed up the meeting with a challenge to parents, not teachers and administrators. It's not the school's problem. It's our problem. And it will only be resolved as we take initiatives throughout the community to combat the alienation our young people are feeling. Dennis Edwards, WJC Eyewitness News. The state superintendent also is making sure every school has a uniform crisis plan, emphasizing intervention and prevention. Well, just a week ago, we were watching the terrifying scene unfold in Littleton, Colorado today. President Clinton began making taking steps to make it tougher for children to get guns. Scott Jackson is live to continue our team coverage with more on the president's proposal sky. Dennis, this new crime package is being called one of the most sweeping gun control packages in three decades. Seven days isn't long enough to get over the horror of the Columbine school shooting. And we don't need to go through another Littleton for the American people who want it badly enough. To make safety locks mandatory on all guns and to hold parents accountable if their children commit crimes with guns. We have to redefine the national community so that we have a shared obligation to save children's lives. And. We've got to get out of this crazy denial that this won't make a difference. This it's crazy. It won't work. Just because it won't make all the difference doesn't mean it won't make a difference. It will make a difference. And you're telling Eyewitness News what you think. You cannot keep track of your children 24 hours a day. No, I mean, you can do the best that you can, but I don't think that they're responsible. Kids are going to do what they're going to do. Bad parenting, per say. Isn't it illegal if indeed they broke laws all doing it? That's a different story. It's very, very important for parents to know where your children are, what they're doing and how they're handling themselves. I believe they knew. They just didn't choose to do anything about it. It takes effort. Parents should be accountable for that. I think that it's a good beginning. I don't think that the parents are the only ones responsible. And so I feel like this is a good first step, but there's lots more that needs to be done. One of President Clinton's other proposals is a mandatory background check before you can buy weapons at gun shows. Denise, thank you. City Council President Laurence Bell is trying to overturn the recently passed residency law that would allow President Kweisi Mfume to run for mayor. In his commentary tonight, Michael Luskin says it's a long shot, Michael. Well, he would like the city council to undo what the state legislature did just a few weeks ago. Laurence Bell's move is understandable politically since he's got his own plans to become mayor. And it's also understandable in a theoretical sense. After all, who want somebody running the city who moves into town just six months ahead of time and therefore has no real feel for the job. But that's where Bell's argument falls apart. Clearly, he does have a vested interest, and his attempt to block him fully has nothing to do with philosophy. Because the truth is, fool me is not an outsider. He's lived in Baltimore, served on a city council and represented in Washington. The city's in his blood no less than it's in Bell's or Carl Stokes or any other current candidate for mayor. And the argument that infamous been legislated into the race only because of political strings being pulled. Well, that argument falls apart when those who would deny him a shot are only trying to pull political strings of their own. I'm Michael, Alaska. Thank you, Michael. We come in, we start fresh, we Kansas City and you got to feel like some point. We need to bounce back. We played well against this team in the past and we just need to get it going. Right now, it's up to each individual, this clubhouse, to lift themselves in the mirror and decide whether it's time to do something about it. I mean, there's everyone's out there trying to give 100%, but maybe we're trying a little too much. Maybe we got to step back a little bit and just try and have fun again. I think right now, guys are trying to grind through an inning work and we need to go out and have fun. Like this game is meant to be played. Have a lot more fun when you win, Guys have almost forgotten those four and 14 into the night for playing the Royals first of a three game series down here at the ballpark. Meanwhile, out at Owings Mills, Ravens veterans continue their mini camp out there. A new player on the field this morning for the Ravens wide receiver cousins Kadri Ishmael, who signed a one year contract this morning with the Ravens. Ishmael did four seasons in Minnesota when Billick was the offensive coordinator there. That's why he came to Baltimore. I think one of the key things for me being here is Brian Billick, obviously familiar with his system, been in it for four years, had a lot of success with this system. And I really feel that it can take advantage of a lot of things that I do. And I fairly feel that this team has got some upside. So I'm really, really fortunate to be here. Six year veteran Kadri Ishmael, brother of Raheem The Rocket, Ishmael Kadri, known therefore as the missile wide receiver kick return kind of guy, averaged over 21 yards per kickoff return last season in New Orleans. The bones had physically been broken in half the time that there was a massive injury to both left legs.
