Mary had a little lamb in your natural voice. What, are you going to talk to me? Mary had a little lamb, and spice was what is known everywhere the Mary went. And I am sure to go. So I think the whole kit and caboodle right now, this whole segment is only going to be about two, 2.5 minutes. So I try to keep your answers down. Okay. Yeah, for the second. Sure. First off, your name. Okay. What is it? Jim Nelson. And he also. And Alec writing me. Okay. I just heard a little bit. Okay. The guy's name was clockwork. Right. He had a little segment on his show. They called it Sports Fantasy. Right. How how did this all happen that you got involved with this? Well, I wrote him a letter. He solicited responses for people who wanted to play tennis with a tennis star, played football with Johnny Unitas, let's say. And that was always a dream of mine. Almost every little boy had to play baseball, you know, to play Major League Baseball. And I figured this was as close as I was going to get. So I wrote him a letter. I said I wanted to bat against a major league pitcher. There were like 10,000 people wrote in with the primarily the same thing. And he had them on a fish ball on the 6:00 news. He plucked three out. Mine was the third one picked. And not only did you get the bat against a major league pitcher, but you got the bat against the best the Orioles had ever had. While the best, he won to 268 games. He was on a streak of I think it was his fourth 21 season in a row.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882#t=2.029,102.82"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882/transcript/71637/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He was no, he was the best there ever was. So here you are. What age were you then? I was 24, 24 years old, going up against Jim Palmer. Right. What was going through your mind? Well, I'm nervous as anything, because not only batting against power, but the rain that day. And there was some question about whether we would even get to do it. And the Tarp was on the field and the skies relented. So we went out to the bullpen. And that was that was fine with me. Anytime, you know, if he wants to stay in there and protect me, I'll sure pick up a baton and try to hit him. So what was going through your mind? All right. Are you worried about your hand? And here is this guy warming up, getting ready to let you have one. Well, I'm scared to death because he was on curveballs. They looked like they were going to hit me in the head and then would just drop right over the plate. The catcher didn't even have to move his mitt. And at one point, I asked the catcher, I said, do I need a helmet? Because I kept, you know, all three of us were bailing out. It was and it was Dave Skaggs was the Orioles backup catcher. And he kind of pulled his mask off and spit and said, you don't need no helmet. Get in there and hit, you know? So I jumped back in and I managed to hit some balls that they would not have been base hits in a game. But I managed to get the bat on the ball a little bit. Did you hit him? Yeah, a little bit. I mean, you know, pop ups and weak grounders, but that's about it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882#t=103.12,180.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882/transcript/71637/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"How about the other two? How they make out? Just about the same. I saw that one guy. The one guy look. I mean, he was almost like he was standing on the base. Yeah. When he walked up to the plate, he stood. He stood on. Stood on a plate with the bat. And he obviously didn't know really what to do. And Palmer just stood on the mound looking across Wagner like, What's going on here? What is this? What did you eat? Apparently? Well, Palmer did take some time out to autograph a few balls. And you still have yours? Sure. Yeah. There was the ball back there that they. They had taken out to the bullpen to use. And when it was all over, you know, the three of us, you know, just said, wow. And we grabbed the couple, passed out of the bag and got him to grab him for us. And you still have it? Sure. Yeah. What you say there were how many folks you think participated in that contest? If I can recollect, I was like 10,000. And I had had a softball game that night when I came down or as I kind of phone calls, you know, you're going to bat against Palmer, you're going to bat against Paul Rudd. I didn't know he was doing it that night. But I was lucky because I was the third one that he picked out. Three. All right. Now, you haven't seen this footage since it aired back in 1978, correct? I haven't seen it. I always wanted to, but, you know, until recently, I finally got the nerve to write you a letter and asking for a copy of it. And I never thought I'd get on get on TV because of it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882#t=181.18,270.7"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882/transcript/71637/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, the first treat, of course, was back in 1978 when you won against Palmer. Right. Now, the second trait is actually being able to see this stuff. Right. And have it and reminisce about it a little. Right. Yeah, I guess it was. Andy Warhol said everybody would have 15 minutes of fame. I guess I'm getting my second 15 minutes. I guess I'm luckier than most. Two minutes. Your second Might be too bad. Two minutes to say. And. Okay. Please let me have my head. Of course. All right, let's. You obviously are a baseball fanatic. I don't know about fanatic. I know that. It's my favorite sport. You collect baseball memorabilia? Sure. I'll miss anything I can get my hands on. If there's an Astros Padres game on TV, I'll sit down and watch it, you know? Not not only the Orioles, but mostly the Orioles. Like. Like. But baseball. Yeah. Baseball night. Love the game. You let's go back to that day one more time. Channel $0.13. Couple of its finest transmissions. You had Ross Moss and Carmen, Lucy and Joe. And of course, Claus Wagner was there, Right. What did you think about all that attention? I mean, not only where you're facing Palmer, but you had cameramen and yet sound man and a sports reporter. What what was going through your mind? I just very nervous. You know, you were hoping that you wouldn't say the wrong thing. Do the wrong thing. You wouldn't look like a fool. And Palmer tried to make us look like a fool when I had had that ability, the way we were swinging and missing it. A lot of his pitches. But still, it was something I was not going to pass up. This was once in a lifetime, and Wagner interviewed us, I think, in front of the Oriole dugout.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882#t=270.91,377.0"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882/transcript/71637/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The pictures I still have, he interviewed us in front of the dugout at, I think, before and after we swung the bat. And, you know, just the attention you got at work and friends and family and all that for being on TV. Not many people get that chance. So obviously that with all that attention that day after I went on the air, you became like a little celebrity for a little while, not very long. And then people have a way of bringing you back to Earth. Yeah. Well, do you think this second appearance will make you a little celebrity again for a little while? And then I'm sure to the people I work with and friends and family will bring me back to Earth. And you've been playing you've been involved in baseball now or softball for how long? Well, I played Little League ball, primarily ball. I played softball. I managed men's and women's teams. I managed youth leagues, you know, instructional like softball. So baseball in one form or another has been a part of my life for all my life. Well, you're still a young man. What's next? I just keep on doing what I'm doing and have fun at it, you know, keep building on my collection. And it's fun going to card shows and seeing the different things that they have for sale and getting autographs. And I have a few autographs on the wall over there. Of most of them I've gotten in person. But I guess what I want to ask you is after the experience of facing Palmer and now again with with it being or how are you going to top this, I guess the only way to top it would be to go to an Orioles fantasy camp.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882#t=377.93,467.63"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136870/file/253882/transcript/71637/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Every year they have those in Florida, but that's not a bit of money. It's out of my price range right now. But that that would be a topper if I could do that, because usually it's Boog and Brooks and Dick Hall and people like that that show up there to play against the campers. That would be that would be a topper if I could play play against those guys. And now you have you have a daughter. Yes. Who is interested in baseball? A little. Yeah. She's a big Birdie Anderson fan, but she's 15. And most girls at that age do like Brady. I think they like to sit in the bleachers and watching from behind. For the most part. I. I won't even ask you why, but. But does she play ball? No, she. Not at all. No. She's a periphery fan. You never get out there and bat a few whether or throw. Sometimes we go out and play catch. Yeah. She likes to do that as she would Bologna now but she. Yeah, she enjoys it. Okay one other thing now are you are you born and raised in Baltimore? Yeah, born in Dundalk, raised in London. Worked downtown at the federal building for years and years and years. And you get ages. So you've been playing baseball literally for as long as you can remember. Yes, sir. And loving it. And it was it was terrible when they went on strike. But yeah, yeah, let's get back together next. I'm sure they will. Hopefully. Well, too much money to be liked, to be made for them not to do it. Anyway, you know, with all the. The hubbub swirling all around, you know, I can't really remember what I said. I would have to see the tape again. And. Well, well, let me ask you this. When you when you see this tape, when you see this piece on air, what do you think? What kind of an effect do you think it's going to have on you? This is kind of pure nostalgia. Sure. Well, back then, I know from the pictures I have, I know I weighed about 40 pounds more than I do now. So it will be an incentive not to gain those 40 pounds back. Plus, it would be nice to see, you know, how how I look back then, what I did back then, you know, practically any sports wise to, you know, the greatest thing that ever happened to me in the battle against a Hall of Fame pitcher. And that's what I want to see again. You know, you know, the funny thing is we age, but the tape does. Yeah, the tape just shows you just the way you were. It has an age today. All right. And how long has it been? 16 years now. So a little has changed. Yeah, a little. You get older, but you hopefully you get better. And that's what you think you are right now. Sure. If. Are you ready to take Palmer on again? If he wants me, I'll take him on again. I think he's got better things to do now. Now? But do you think he'd do a better job this time? Probably. What I'm after. All right. You said. Yeah, yeah, but. But I've slowed up too. So you don't think. I don't know that I would get anything better, hit him any better than I did last time, but I sure would love to try it. All right. Let me ask you again and again, I'm looking for an ending. Okay. Just in case it could be erased. Are you ready to take Palmer on again? Sure. Bring him on any time you think you do a little bit better this time. Yeah, I think I would do a little bit better. He slowed up a little. Yeah. He's getting old now. And you've gotten a little more powerful. A little more wiser, right? Right. I think that I think I know the book on him now after 16 years. Go ahead. Turn around. Let me see that. I'm okay. Come on up a little further. I can see you. All right. Come on. Come on. Okay. Stay overnight corner. All right. That's a good. Good. And you were, what, about 11? You said on that one roughly. Look, you went like that. 11 And the other one also her stuff would have been impossible. And was this standard? Yes. And how about having.
