The stubborn six alarm fire swept through the Jack and Jill warehouse in East Baltimore this morning, as Alex Dimitri reports. Fire investigators think an explosion started the fire, but they have no idea what blew up. To fight a fire, you have to see it. And that wasn't always easy this morning. At times, heavy smoke and fog all but covered the Jack and Jill ice cream distribution center on Edison Highway. While inside the warehouse, a six alarm fire burned, a blaze apparently begun by an explosion. Yeah, we're standing by the truck. Not. It came out of all the smoke and shook me. Is that high bad? The explosion happened in a section of the warehouse where electric lines and compressors come together. From there, the fire flared out. It's a lot of pallets, wooden pallets, and that's what it was really burning. And we're just getting into the building because part of Wall and roof had come down. And we don't want to get anybody injured unnecessarily because this warehouse is a long way from hydrants.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77490/file/164418#t=119.04,250.25"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77490/file/164418/transcript/39232/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The alarms quickly rose to six just to bring in enough men and equipment to bring water to the fire. With electricity cut off, some employees fired up generators and refrigerated delivery trucks packed with ice cream. Getting power to the warehouse freezer, which is loaded with ice cream, was the next worry and okay for about ten or 12 hours. Without any problem this afternoon. We're about to get the electricity back on if we can. But smoke from the fire could prove disastrous, even if the ice cream stays cold. Now, thanks to the pediatric surgical team at the University of Maryland Hospital. Little Maria mendez has a chance at life. And of course, the more of these cold, potentially cold days we put behind us, the less possibility that cold stuff has arriving. There's a severe thunderstorm watch, as you might expect, with very strong, moist air being pumped of moist air coming up in the Midwest. And that's not surprising. It's actually very reminiscent of a springtime condition. Further out to the west. So a lot of activity as our full satellite photograph shows. Winter still exists in the west. This major storm system out here is what's responsible for pulling the warm air up. But this storm system really is not going to move at all over the next five days. It's going to, in fact, collect itself together with the storm coming from the north. And it's going to continue keeping us in this very strong southern flow. For the rest of tonight. We're going to see some clouds around with some haze, but a very mild night, 50 degrees for the overnight low and tomorrow, 70 for the high temperature with some sun and clouds and a shower as possible. As far as we know, there were no serious injuries. A couple of passes around the airport. We finally landed and once we landed, you could hear a smoke alarm going off in the front of the plane. Alex Dietrich watched as city firefighters battled more than the fire to fight a fire. You have to see it. And that wasn't always easy this morning. At times, heavy smoke and fog all but covered the Jack and Jill ice cream distribution center on Edison Highway. While inside the warehouse, a six alarm fire burned. A blaze apparently begun by an explosion. Yeah, we're standing by the truck. Schroder came out all his smoke and shook me. That high bad. The explosion happened in a section of the warehouse where electric lines and compressors come together. From there, the fire flared out. That's a lot of pallets, wooden pallets, and that's what it was really burning. And we're just getting into the building because part of Wall and roof had come down. And we don't want to get anybody injured unnecessarily because this warehouse is a long way from hydrants. The alarms quickly rose to six just to bring in enough men and equipment to bring water to the fire. Lines had to be stretched nearly half a mile. In all, nearly 40,000 feet of hose were laid before enough water could be pumped in to put out the fire. The warehouse has 45 employees can only stand and watch and wonder what happens next. If I don't have a job the way it looks, you know, with electricity cut off, some employees fired up generators, unrefrigerated delivery trucks packed with ice cream. Getting power to the warehouse freezer, which is loaded with ice cream, was the next worry for about ten or 12 hours without any problem. This afternoon, we'll try to get the electricity back on if we can, but smoke from the fire could prove disastrous, even if the ice cream stays cold.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77490/file/164418#t=1938.81,2048.98"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/77490/file/164418/transcript/39232/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"State health inspectors will sample what doesn't melt on Monday, and anything contaminated will be thrown away. We'll show you the satellite photograph we broke in the clear skies. And that was pretty much the case through the mid part of the day. Once that sun popped out, we had very pleasant temperatures. Today, as we set the satellite in motion, we see that that clear skies settled right in over Maryland. A real break considering some clouds were around us throughout. A good bit of the day, but our high temperature with this southerly flow, 63 degrees in the city at 3:00. 61 at the airport. And these clouds actually are fairly thin.
