No matter how hot it gets outside this summer, you know, it's always going to be cool inside movie theaters and it's great popcorn and things like that. It's my popcorn now. The hottest thing inside cool movie theaters. The summer's been the new James Bond picture. And on tonight's show, you're going to meet the real life American, James Bond. He's a real guy named John. Also tonight, you'll meet the real life Elizabeth McKay, who plays the battered housewife, Laura Sanders on the soap opera All My Children in our Departments. Jerry Baker is going to show you the right tools and methods for pruning your plants. Captain Carrot reveals an amazing IQ pinch technique that gets rid of muscle cramps. And Bob Smith takes us on a fun tank of gas getaway to Hershey Park, P.A.. You probably know people as well as I do who won't answer their telephones between the hours of noon to four so they can watch their favorite soaps. I know secretaries who keep little, tiny television sets inside their desks. Now I know people who go on vacation and pay other folks to watch themselves for them so they will be lost when they come back. Soap operas are very popular forms of television and All My Children is one of the most popular shows on TV. Tonight, you're going to meet Elizabeth Mackay, who plays Leora Sanders. But it scared you, didn't it? Elizabeth Mackay is otherwise known as Leora Sanders, a victim of wife abuse in the ever popular soap opera All My Children. Okay, so how did she wind up so far from home? Who is Laura Sanders anyway? What's her relationship with Elizabeth? And as we follow this story, too, the Buffalo Zoo, we're at the zoo today because I grew up not very far from here at all. A couple of blocks. And I used to come to the zoo all the time when I was a kid. When I was in high school, I went to Mount Saint Joseph's Academy. I really loved science. And when I was, you know, it came time to decide what college you wanted to go to if you wanted to go to a college. And I thought what I really wanted to be was a physicist. It's not so fun when people recognize me. Her own marriage to a successful lawyer is a very happy one. He moved to New York with her so she could work on all my children. Well, some top team physicians and trainers around the country are also using one of these very simple acupressure methods called the acute pinch, to help relieve the pain caused by muscle cramps. I'm talking about top team doctors like Dr. Donald Cooper at Oklahoma State University, who was also the 1968 Olympic team doctor. Now, they say that the occupants works to relieve the muscle cramps, but they have no idea why. Well, if you're a person that gets cramp now and then from exercising or what have you, here's how you do it. First of all, you're going to grasp the area above the upper lip with your thumb and forefinger. You're going to clasp it in a rather broad grip like that. Squeeze for 15 to 20 seconds. And that's what they do to relieve those muscle cramps. It obviously doesn't get rid of the basic cause of the cramp is going to get rid of the symptoms for a while. Today is the day. I'm going to break the bank. I'm going to break the bank. Certainly. I hope so. Maybe a little blackjack. One armed bandits. So this is a one off and we're going to break the bank.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=1980.31,2092.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah, I'm sure. Well, this other fellow here said he was going to break the bank. I want to get to it first. Do you think you're going to be lucky today? Well, I always hope so. And what about the bunny hostesses? The real cute. Real cute. One of our one day adventurers was a little short on experience. He's a retired preacher. I never gambled in my life. No. No. Why now? I'm really not going for that. I'm going for the trip. For about $20. You can buy a round trip on the Playboy coach to the wonders of Atlantic City and on the way, enjoy free flowing refreshments served by Playboy Brands. If getting there is half the fun these coaches not busses thank you. But coaches are the winning ticket operated by the AMC company in Bel Air. This luxury liner of the highway is made in Germany and costs more than $300,000. Once underway, the bunnies begin serving refreshments and serving and serving and serving well. How would you describe your job? What do you really do? They give him a good ride on the way out, but make sure they enjoy themselves. Yeah, buddy. Sherry, you ever get any strange requests from people? Yeah. Like what? Like things I shouldn't have seen on TV. One group warms up with a card game console. Pat Nelson is president of the company that runs the tours. I understand that we had one or two that were swinging from the chandeliers and losing a few clothes here and there. But we tried to keep it within reason and as possible. You know, it's good. I'd heard that you had two naked people swinging from the top of the bus, I mean, specifically. Well, I didn't actually see it myself, but I did hear some stories to that effect.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=2093.32,2236.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yes. After a couple of hours, the coach lands squarely at the Playboy Club on the boardwalk, and our hearty group is ready to take on the ferocious dragon of chance. They're going to kill that person now, are you? Yeah, I hope so. Good. My wife gave me $10 already. Well, we couldn't take our cameras on to the floor of the casino. You see, they've got this rule in Atlantic City that says if you take a camera down, you might get a picture of somebody who told their wife that they were going to go out for a quart of milk and in fact, went to the casinos and they say no cameras. Okay, we'll stand out here. But we will tell you about this little bag that they give you. You see, all of our friends from the bus got one of these. They're called a bunny bag and they're empty. The promotion says you can fill this with your winnings. A lot of these bags will probably be empty at the end of the day, but all of the action is inside. These pictures are from the opening day of the Playboy Club when cameras were allowed in. Our happy group is up against these endless rows of roulette, wheels, bunnies, crap tables, bunnies. Card games, bunnies and of course, the money. We decided to check with some of our folks about halfway through the afternoon. Well, how's it going? Oh, $10. Had I put doing that? Too bad. But one thing. I think you can recoup your losses by the end of the day. No, but I gained a lot of knowledge. What did you. What did you learn? Don't do it again. By evening, our weary but happy group was ready to head home.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=2237.23,2355.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay. How many winners here? Look how many losers. How many winners? Yeah. How many losers? At day's end. No regrets. Just some people trying to figure out how to explain to their boss tomorrow why they went to work yesterday. Well, everybody had a great time and nobody came back in a barrel. Was a fun day for these magical mystery tour hours. I made that all right, too. I've got $0.25 left. What if there's a pinball machine around here? We'll be back with more Evening magazine. Jesse Green's got some weekend fun for you tonight. He's going to let you know all about the Afro Festival in downtown Bald. And Steve Kinney, our wizard of fun, is going to let you know how you can make your own sailboat for the kids. And right now, Tim is getting ready to let you know what's happening over at Paris six with Tony Bennett, of course, a wonderful singer and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. But first, here's Jessica. Hey, this is J.C., and I'm going to tell you where to have a good time this weekend. Another festival, as usual. We're going to start off this one with a raffle and then head over to the food section. We're talking about the Jenkins Memorial Home. They're having their festival this Saturday. Yes, there's always lots of food and I just take it off people's plate having some good time. But there's going to be lots of dancing music, a lot of good fun. And speaking of, dancing is actually going to be a boogie on down. You're going to have a dance contest and you'll even be able to pick up things that you can't pick up anywhere else, like the signature of Jim Davis of Dallas. You know, you can't pick that up any more, but you can pick it up right here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=2366.88,2532.61"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"There's going to be a lot of other things from celebrities and there's even going to be an auction by guys. That's the way it goes on all day long here. Lots of fun singing the memorial right behind St Agnes Hospital off of Cayton Avenue, right on Benson. And that's the way it's going to be. But don't go away, because I got to tell you, for the weekend and this weekend, it's the Afram Festival, and there's going to be lots of music and lots of entertainment. And then we get down to the eating of it all and it's a lot of good food. Hey, can I have a taste of that? I love it. Listen, there's going to be a lot here. Arts and crafts. There's going to be religious groups. There's going to be lots of music, as I said, and a lot of the legit food. This is dog that is very good. It's a lot of spicy, too. You know, I want to get down here and try this, but whatever you do, make it down to the Opera Festival this weekend, which is happening at Westfield, Happy in Inner Harbor. And whatever you do, have a great weekend. I am. Are you a powerboat enthusiast and maybe prefer the quieter, more peaceful ride of a sailboat? Well, whichever your choice, you can be ready to crank up the power, set sail just a very few minutes, making your own simple toy boats.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=2532.94,2619.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/18","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Hi, I'm Steve Kenny, the wizard of Fun. I'm going to be showing you how to make a power block boat in the low carbon sailboats and materials you probably already have around the house. Now, to build a sailboat, you need to start with a milk carton. Any sized milk carton, or do one or two card or even an orange juice container. And you take the carton and come on the diagonal that's on three sides using a scissors so that when you open up the carton, you're going to have a pontoon boat. Notice you have two places to put your cargo. You have pontoons on the bottom. They'll keep the boat fairly stable and the top of the milk carton automatically makes a nice bow. But then you need a sail. What do you use? How about a paper plate to hold the paper plate in? I'm going to take the scissors. And right about in the middle here, I'm going to cut a slit and then take a paper plate, which, if you want, you can decorate with some nicer graphics, little crayon work, just slip in the paper plate that holds the boat stable. Now watch this. It's going to really take off. Zap! Now, if the wind happens to be a little bit weak the day you build your sailboat, or maybe you're one of those people who happens to like the sheer brute force of a powerboat. You may want to make a power block boat. Any scrap of wood will do whether you put a point on the end or round off the front, or just use an old scrap, a two by four, put a couple of nails into one in this home with the nails and far enough so that they won't come loose or come out across.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=2619.7,2695.91"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Put a couple of rubber bands and then a paddle for a paddle. You might use a stick, a tongue depressor, or a piece of a popsicle stick or maybe even a scrap of plastic like I've used here. And then you wind up the paddle. The more you wind it up, the further the boat's going to go. And then put it down in the water and you're going to get a fast spread. You ready? Here we go. Thanks, Steve. In just a few minutes, the sounds of Tony Bennett across the harbor at the 13 Harbor Lights Music Festival on Pier six. That's where Tim is right now to give you a sneak preview. Let's join. Coordination, beauty, balance, agility. Does that all sound like a ballet performance? Well, it also describes windsurfing as all those qualities and more. Maybe that's why it's becoming one of the newest Olympic sports. Let's go to Annapolis and check it out. Catch a wave and you're sit on top of the. Don't be afraid to try the greatest border. You. Take a close look at this sport. It's one of the newest sports in America. It's called Bored Sailing or what you may know is wind surfing. It's become very popular with about 300,000 of them being sailed throughout the world. And it's the fastest single hulled boat known to man. Right. We're. The sport started in Southern California and grew up here, but it grew here in different ways than it did in Europe. People here are very fast on their boards and they're very good at handling their boards in all kinds of weather conditions. But they don't know the tactics and the strategy, as well as the Europeans do, who race very seriously all the time. My job is to teach them the strategy and the tactics, and once they get down, get that down, they can be the best.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=2696.81,3112.28"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Major Hall is one of the U.S. coaches who will be spending his summer in Europe teaching racing strategies to Olympic hopefuls because for the first time, sailboat racing will be an Olympic event. But today, he's in Annapolis, Maryland, where 40 competitors from all across the country have gathered to compete for a chance at the Olympics. Everybody had to send in their racing resume. And I think my resume as a man was good enough to be selected. I just wanted to see how I could compete against everybody else. It's going to be hard because they only pick one overall person, male or female. So, you know, I'll give it a try. These are people that are looking towards the Olympics. And to be even thinking about that, you have to be thinking, I'm making a big commitment. Like, if they're thinking about this a year before the Olympics, they're thinking about quitting their jobs, dropping out of school or whatever for a year of very intensive training, not just for weeks, even before the final winners are narrowed down. There are training sessions. Ken Winter is a professional board sailor. He's been the overall world champion for three years. And today he's passing on some of his best tips. You know, in a perfect world, we like to do that just about every time you go out. In most Olympic yachting, there's a lot of equipment involved, a lot of high technology. It's not really a good test of the sailors. It's a good test of the sailor and his equipment and most of the yachting in the Olympics and on board sailing. The board is so simple. It's a good test of of the sailors, since it's man against men, not men and equipment against men and equipment when they're racing.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=3113.9,3217.25"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"While other sailing crafts depend on whether it's to control the boat's course. The sail board has only a flexible mast that's controlled by the sailor. So learning strategies and techniques for racing is the key to capturing the gold medal. But what makes a champion's? To become a champion in this sport. It helps to be light because in the Olympics they won't have weight classes like in wrestling. So you have to be light. It can't be over £150 and it wouldn't hurt to be under 140. Got to be agile. Skiers make good windsurfers. Surfers do gymnasts. But you don't have to be that. You do have to be athletic. You don't have to be super strong. But you got to be able to handle a strong breeze. I think there are a lot of people with the physical attributes, but beyond that is the desire because it takes some time and you've got to stick to it. After two days of racing, it's time for the last race. There are eight training positions available for the trip to Europe. And the competition is tough just to keep concentrating on everything. Single internal picture and also being right here right now. I'm not trying to think about whether you're going to win or lose. You just have to try to sell your own race and get the right win shifts and keep the sale in tight. You know, you can easily your mind can easily start wandering. So to keep concentrating, that's the hardest part. A lot of these guys been practicing, like for months and months. I probably sailed about 10 hours before the strike got into practice, which is, you know, it's bad on my part that you're just trying to go as fast as you can and go the right way.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505#t=3218.36,3336.5"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76336/file/162505/transcript/38970/annotation/22","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'd say most of them, that's maybe the main thing in their life. The guys are good, are as much at home on that board as they are walking down the street, and probably they can do more things on the board than they can walking on dry land. It's a lot like skiing. It's something you get caught up in. It's not just a competitive thing. It's it's a way of life. Well, the regatta is over and the results are in. All in all, there were five men and two women. We'll be going to Europe. And today is only the beginning of a long, hard road. Months and months of practicing and training. Hopefully one of them will be an Olympic gold medalist in 1984. I'm honestly. That's right. We'll be back in a minute. Baltimore is such a great place in the summer. Isn't the only thing going on carousel here. Tony Bennett tonight and Monday night, we're going to introduce you to the one and the only Herbie, the termite sniffing dog.
