You're watching TV with Baltimore, his most watched 6 p.m. newscast. This is Eyewitness News. With Denise Coke. Vic Carter. Weather with Bob Turk. Sports with John Burin. From the looks of it, an entire eastern family was slaughtered as they slept. The bodies of two school teachers and their teenage son were discovered this morning, all with their throats slashed. Saunders has been in eastern all day as police begin their investigation and the community comes to grips with a horrible murder. He joins us live now with more on that stand. Denise, residents we talked with say this is small town USA where the atmosphere is usually calm, quaint and very peaceful. But apparently that was not the case. In one neighborhood on South Washington Street where the tragedy did occur. Shock, sadness and despair are spread throughout the community as we talk to a whole lot of folks who simply cannot believe what happened. They say this kind of thing rarely happens here. It is a seemingly peaceful neighborhood here in East and where local police say this terrible tragedy took place sometime before they were called to the scene around 5:00 this morning. I felt terrible because. That's an unusual thing to happen in this area. Police discovered the bodies of 41 year old Susan Fisher and her 27 year old husband, Christopher Fisher. Both were well known teachers here and were found with stab wounds to the head and throat. Longman say they've uncovered what they think may be the murder weapons. It was a French knife and a claw hammer recovered at the scene. Found dead in a separate bedroom was 14 year old David Fisher, a younger son, an eighth grader at Eastern Middle School. However, an older child, 16 year old Michael Fisher, is being charged as an adult with three counts of first degree murder.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000#t=1.64,123.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000/transcript/71280/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It brought back to mind our daughter was killed, right? A unique, unique, gifted, talented, caring individual. You heard a neighbor mentioned of her granddaughter being killed in front of the house. That, of course, was an automobile accident about 5 or 6 years ago. So apparently, to some, it's considered what you may want to call a bad luck street in a sense. Nonetheless, Christopher Fisher, the husband who was discovered dead along with his wife, was described as a very dedicated fourth grade teacher. He taught at white Marsh Elementary in Trappe, Maryland. And from what we're told, this gentleman just went out of his way. Even worked on weekends at Eastern High School with students who belong to his late wife. He was the stepdad to both sons, young David, of course, who was found murdered, and Michael, who is being held as the person who police say committed this horrible crime. Michael Fisher, the same young man we're talking about from what we're told, is a very bright student, a junior at Eastern High School who was not only very bright, but an honor student as well. Denise. All right. Thank you. Stand. Santana is reporting live. Michael Fisher will be seeing for his initial review by a district court commissioner tonight. The investigation into Friday's deadly train collision goes on at this hour. Late word from the Baltimore medical examiner tonight. Eight of the 11 people who were killed did not suffer injuries serious enough to have died in the crash had there not been a fire. Right now, investigators are staging something called a sight distance survey to try to unravel how the accident happened. Alex Dimitri joins us live now from the scene with details. Alex. Well, first of all, new details from the medical examiner's office as well. We're learning that none of the three crewmen on board that train had any alcohol in their bloodstream. Tomorrow, drug tests will be released. Investigators, meanwhile, are back here in Silver Spring along this stretch of track, looking for technical data on distance, visibility and speed. They chose this time of day to match the time of day last Friday, when a marked commuter train collided with an Amtrak passenger train. The target is the stop signal where the train's hit. That's called a sight distance survey and how far back up the track it is a visible. For the first time since last Friday's accident marked trains were making the Brunswick to Washington DC run. 82. Let's go east, the same direction Amtrak train was traveling last week when it slammed into an Amtrak passenger train in Silver Spring, killing 11 and injuring dozens. The President's Day holiday brought few riders today, although sitting in an identical car on the same route did bring out feelings. I was thinking about the name of one of the men that died, and I think I rode with him on this train before, so I wanted to be in the same place and kind of, you know, relive it a little bit. I didn't really feel any sense of blame for anyone. I mean, it was an accident. It sounds like there may have been some problem with the placement of the switches or the signals.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000#t=235.15,335.87"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000/transcript/71280/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I don't think people should be talking about blaming the landmark operators or anything. From my experience, they've all been really, you know, very conscientious people. National Transportation Safety Board investigators are looking into reports. Safety doors and windows were not working properly on the train. They will also look into neighborhood complaints. A small bridge over the tracks blocks visibility. I think the people in our neighborhood feel very fortunate that this was not a freight train carrying tonnage of toxic waste, that it was an a long freight train that took out this bridge, which is below minimum, safety clearance. It's one foot below and it's right behind an elementary school. So this is what I feel very lucky. And the NTSB will continue to focus on the signal system. Now we're focusing in on why, what elements may have impacted upon the operator, the engineer that that made him either forget. I totally disregard that signal. The engineer was under a yellow caution signal before he pulled into Kensington Station Friday night. The red signal to stop lay just ahead with the Amtrak train. But instead of proceeding at a yellow limit of 30mph, the Mark train was doing twice that speed, leading to official speculation. A second signal between Kensington and the crash site might be needed to remind engineers of track conditions. That single signal system is not controlled locally. It's run out of an office in Jacksonville, Florida. And today the dispatcher who was in charge at that time was brought to Washington, D.C., where he was questioned by investigators. Nick now likes this signal system that has been the focus of so much of this investigation, the test that they're doing this evening, will that conclude the investigators work on it? Investigators looking for ways to make it easier to survive train crashes. We'll look at those reports that many victims survive the impact, only to die in the resulting fire. That investigation focuses on the older diesel locomotives Mark uses. Well, train travel was light today because of the holiday, but many commuters who did ride the mark trains found their minds turning to Friday's crash. All those Eyewitness News talked to a Penn Station today, said they have concerns, but not enough to keep them from boarding their trains every day. I don't have any concerns because, I think that, most public means of, of transportation are safe. And I think there are a lot of safeguards. And, if there was an accident as, this past week that, it's a matter of faith and it's out of a person's hands anyway. So, no, I don't have any problems with, traveling by train. Canelo Alvarez. What is a jet stream? Well, the jet stream is a narrow band of upper atmosphere wind with speeds greater than 57mph in the summer. The jet stream, for the most part, is no collected normally well north into Canada and relatively weak. But in the wintertime the jet stream does. One of these babies comes way down from Canada. It picks up speed and it drags cold air down across the eastern United States. It also helps to bring Arctic air masses and a lot of storminess. When that Arctic air mass hits that warm air, quite often, low pressure systems or storms form along the Gulf Coast region that bring us the heavy snows that we've seen this year. So the jet stream is very, very important. It tells high and low pressure systems where to go. And I can tell you where to go right now. All right. There's a jet stream. It's at about 25 to 40,000ft. When we lose a loved one, each person handles the pain in their own individual way. Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lynn says, however, there's no right or wrong way to grieve, but there are some things that a person can do to make the process a little easier. That's true. Grieving is not something that happens overnight. Sometimes it takes years and years to get through the pain. Denise, in tonight's Healthwatch, if you've lost a family member or a friend, you already know how hard it can be to cope. And although grieving is a different experience for each of us, there are some basic things we can do to help ourselves or other people who have experienced a loss. Shelly Bauman is only 32 years old, but she's been through a lot. Life for her has not been easy. Married at 24. Mother at 25. Widow at 28. Three and a half years ago, she lost her husband, Ron, to multiple myeloma, cancer of the bone marrow, two months after Ron was diagnosed. I knew he wasn't going to survive, so I knew at that point that I had to start that healing process. Grieving process can take years. Donna Lewis counsels those who lose loved ones. She says the first step in grieving is to acknowledge the loss, acknowledge your feelings and talk about it. They have to be with somebody that will accept them when they're hammered on the table, that they're angry. Even if it's no rational anger. They have every right to be angry. They've lost somebody that they love dearly and give yourself all the time you need to mourn.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000#t=1887.53,1988.63"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000/transcript/71280/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The grieving process is unique to each person and it has no time limits. There are days when I really just need to cry, and then there are other days when I'm fine. I look at my daughter and I'm just grateful that I have her. And I look at Ron's son, who was like a son to me. And I'm grateful that that I have the relationship that I have with him. And I have these two children that are part of him. As for those who want to help people in mourning, be genuine, patient, and a good listener. Be attentive and let the person talk for as long as they need. Shelly says discussing her husband's passing helped her get through it. It's it's so much easier if you if you just look to the people who want to help you. And although the pain from losing a loved 1st May never completely go away, those who know say in time it does lessen it. One time life does begin to look a little brighter. Just. And the grieving specialist that I talked to says that support groups are also helpful for those who have lost a loved one. You gave some tips in there, but I think another hard part. Obviously, the person who is grieving has a hard job, but also people who are their friends and who care about them. You never know what to say. You always feel embarrassed to say the wrong things. Then you you don't say anything. How do you be supportive without intruding? Yeah, well, Donna Lewis says the best thing to do is not to avoid the person. Mr. Holland is a fictional character, but there were stone reports, many in Baltimore who saw the movie are convinced the real Mr. Holland lives right here. I will use anything from Beethoven to rock and roll. If I think it will help teach a student to love music, it's not an easy road for Glen Holland in the movie Mr. Holland's Opus. But the sound. Choir members who have long since graduated from Pikesville have returned to the fold. They formed an alumni choir with their old leader at the helm. It had its beginnings in a phone call. One Sunday afternoon, when I had 3 or 4 friends over the house. This morning, the bodies of Christopher and Susan Fisher and their 14 year old son, David were discovered in their home. Their throats had been slit, their heads beaten. In this afternoon, police arrested 16 year old Michael Fisher. The Nightteam's Tim Williams is live in Easton now with the latest on the triple murder. Tim. Denise. 16 year old Michael Fisher is being held without bond tonight. Police have arrested him and charged him as an adult in the triple murder of his mother, his brother and his stepfather. Now, the victims were all found dead in the family's home on Washington Street here in Easton. And police say they were led there by A911 call allegedly made by Michael Fisher. They say he is definitely the one in their case and in their opinion at this point, who committed this brutal crime. Likely haven't been the same as Easton. Police walked Michael Eugene Fisher to his bond, hearing the question on their minds if the 16 year old committed these heinous murders and if so, why? At approximately zero zero 24 hours, the Easton Police Department responded to a 911 call. Upon arrival, officers found the bodies of 41 year old Susan Ray Fisher, her husband, 27 year old Christopher Douglas Fisher, and Susan's son, 14 year old David Christopher Fisher. Both the 14 year old and the 16 year old charged were Susan's sons from a previous marriage, all three individuals. Appeared to have died as a result of trauma. The head and neck area. Well, Tim, I know that people in the community described the family as a model, family, never arguing, etc.. Do police then have any idea about a motive? No, the least they do not at this point. They do say that, based on the time which was around 524 in the morning when they were called to the homes, they do feel that it was not a matter of a domestic dispute because they found both, Susan and Christopher in bed at the time. They say that they were killed as they slept. They found the 14 year old in his room on the floor. But they do not pin that, or they do not peg that with any type of motive at this point. All right. Many of those killed in Friday's train crash died when they were trapped inside the burning train. The information comes from two sources. The medical examiner and one of the survivors. This amateur video shows the Mark train car consumed with flames. A 19 year old survivor says smoke filled the car and they couldn't crack the windows or peel back the doors to get out. He and two friends escaped through a hole. Others were not so lucky. Man, I could just go down here. Look right here. The medical examiner now says eight of the 11 killed in that fiery crash died from the flames and the smoke, and not from the impact of the crash. There still is this looming question how did this accident happen? Federal investigators tonight ran more tests, says commuter and long distance passenger trains rolled over new tracks covering the site of Friday's deadly derailment. The Nightteam's Mike Schuh joins us live now from Silver Spring. Mike. Vic. Because the Mark engineer, who was driving the train at the time, died in Friday's crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is left with the task of trying to figure out why both trains were on the same track at the same time. Human error is still the leading suspected cause. But they are also looking into speed, distance and the signaling switches. At the exact same time as the accident last Friday, the same type of marked commuter train came around the bend and saw the signal right before the accident scene. We're only interested in the exact same type of car that the lead car in this accident train had. So we could put somebody in the seat to do those site distance measurements. The workers found that the distance from where the train engineer could see the signal to the accident was 1800 feet.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000#t=3580.9,3696.43"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000/transcript/71280/annotation/35","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"NTSB investigators videotaped their ride from the engineer's seat. Now, with these exact measurements of how far it was from the point, the train engineer could see the signal to the actual point of impact. The NTSB is going to determine whether or not, at the speed the train was going, the engineer could have stopped the train at all. At the speed the train was going the night of the crash, 63mph. There was no way that the train could have stopped in time. Which leads the NTSB to ask, should there be another signal here? Common sense sort of tells you that you need a signal. Given the reduced visibility in this area. But it's probably not required by Federal Railroad Administration rules. And maybe we need to revisit that. Today was also the first day on this route for commuters to revisit their regular mark rail cars. It happened that I rode this train going out of probably 20 minutes before they came down. Now, the NTSB spokesperson told me tonight that it could take six months to a year before they issue any findings. Right now, they just grind on and on and on doing their investigation. No longer are they out at all hours of the night, and they start to go into the lab. They start taking apart switches, finding out what works and what doesn't work, even to the point where they're going to start taking apart some of the trains to see what malfunction. Vic, Mike, I know this is a very meticulous process for the NTSB. What if they do come up with a solution? What happens then? The interesting thing about the NTSB is that it is really just an advisory agency to the federal government that has no regulatory authority.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000#t=3697.06,3789.85"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000/transcript/71280/annotation/36","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But when they come up with something that they think needs to be changed in a system, at least in the aviation part of things, they have an 80%, success rate in their suggestions actually making it into regulation. So if there is a suggestion, let's say a year down the road, like you need to have switches around, signals around blind curves like they may find was a case in this one if they indeed would recommend something like that. It stands a very good chance of eventually becoming a regulation and making the whole system safer. Okay, Mike Schmidt, thank you for that information. And the live report from Silver Spring. Tests on the bodies of the three mark crewmen show no evidence that they used alcohol before the crash. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board have now examined the so-called death car. That was the Mark train rail car where most of the victims died. It was moved from the crash site last night to middle River. Investigators will not say what they are looking for, but there are reports that emergency doors and windows fail to work properly. Eight of the people killed in this tragic crash were enrolled in a program designed to turn lives around. They were all students in the Job Corps program in Harpers Ferry. The students, including two from Baltimore, were on a weekend pass going home to Family and Friends Day at the school. Their fellow students talked about their loss to each other and with counselors. The weather. And I guess the car wash had a good start. I think so. I just I couldn't stand the. So I just you rub against your car, you get a movie. It's terrible. You want to get the undercarriage, you get car to that stuff gets its. But have you got an explanation for that? But you know somebody I was talking to the guy who owns the car wash listeners. He said he had the worst January ever. Despite all this. Yeah. Nobody could get out to the car wash. Who would get the car wash? Would freeze immediately. Was it wasn't that it was just had so much snow and all the rain. It was nobody. Get the car wash, I say. We'll move along a quick, quick, let's take a look at temperatures 3535.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000#t=4443.88,4533.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000/transcript/71280/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's gonna be a mild week. Southeast winds at 10 to 20 are bringing some moisture and some warm air. Look on the rain down our south. Showers and thunderstorms 70s, 80s and Florida milder out in the Midwest as well, believe it or not, in Kansas today, 75 degrees in central Nebraska, 71 degrees. This low is moving to the east. It will continue to bring up this mild and moist air from the south and from the Gulf of Mexico. The jet stream is stuck up in Canada right now, which means the cold air for the time being will stay up to our north, which means we're going to stay on a rather mild side jet stream going across portions of southern Canada, extreme northern section of the United States. And in that kind of flow from west to east, all that cold air is trapped. To the north, we get Pacific air coming in. So that means a lot of moisture, a big storm over portions of California with the 100 mile an hour winds up in the Sierras and a lot of snow up there.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000#t=4535.12,4624.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136409/file/253000/transcript/71280/annotation/44","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So.
