He became interested in the medical problems of dwarfs and began working with them on a limited basis. He became so fascinated over the next ten years with these special problems or little people. He resigned his title as chief of pediatric orthopedics at Johns Hopkins Hospital to devote all of his time to their problems. The problem is not their height. The problem of the many deformities, dislocations, distortions of body, which they have occasionally dwarfs have problems other than orthopedic problems. The orthopedic problems that of the most prevalent. What happens in in this case, the the the rotational deformity, the contorted limbs of such extent that the muscles which would straighten the hip have actually slipped forward and have become hip flexors. The muscles which would strengthen the knee have actually slipped to the side and backwards and have become actually hip flexors so that when that happens, there is nothing to keep the hips straight, nothing to keep the knees straight. And little by little, the flexion deformity, the bend in the hip, the bend in the knee becomes more and more severe until he can no longer muster enough strength to stand or walk. These medical illustrations will show how Andrea's condition would progressive left untreated eventually, through the constant pressure of the misplaced muscles in his legs and raise his hips and knees would dislocate. And he would probably be in a wheelchair by the time he's 30. The corrective procedures that Dr. Complex is doing now will not only keep Andreas out of the wheelchair, but he will be a fully functioning adult and be free from pain. Proper care means sort of some special maintenance of the skeleton for all of these dwarfs.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114031/file/216769#t=63.07,188.18"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114031/file/216769/transcript/61565/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They need to have maintenance work on their skeleton while they are growing. And this is a maintenance not unlike your your car, where you can get where you have to take it in every so many thousands of miles or else it's exactly the same. I am. What I'm doing is simply establishing how many thousands of miles for which type of dwarfism and what needs to be done. Then gravity is the actual cause of the deformities in dwarfs. Their skeletal structure is not sufficient to support their weight. Dr. Compton's able to realign bones, muscles, joints and connective tissues so that the weight of the body is distributed properly through the joints and address his case. This will take six different 8 to 10 hour operations. That's about 60 hours of operative procedures. But Dr. Copage believes the results are worth every minute of it. The outcome is a child who, instead of being flexed at the knees and at the hips with a very significant knock knee deformity standing on his toes. He should be standing on his feet with his heels down with his knees and hips straight. This is Colleen. She'll be going to college in a couple of years, hoping to become a radio TV announcer. Probably take my job away. Someday. She'll be going to college without the crutches and will be a fully functioning adult thanks to about two years of hard work by Dr. Compas. To see Colleen before the operations dramatically illustrates how drastic some of the deformities are. The doctor competent able to correct. I'm doing exactly what I feel that I ought to be doing. And when you see someone who could barely walk or was panting for air to breathe normal because of an execution, to to be able to walk normally and perform, that's more satisfying that I can that I can ever explain.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114031/file/216769#t=189.35,308.86"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114031/file/216769/transcript/61565/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's a very unique experience. It's a very elite experience. Three days after the operation. Andreas isn't quite back on his feet again, but he certainly is in good spirits. Unlike the Holocaust and any sort of any kind of shooting. Andreas, his mother, is a special education teacher in Spain. Probably it's her outlook that's helped Andreas deal so well with his problems. Try very hard to him to understand that everybody's handicapped in a certain way, and I always say that. Some people you can see, like if they wear glasses, they need to have their vision corrected or he wears braces usually. So, you know, he's something very obvious. And some of the people just have any other kind of handicap, like psychological or they're immature or they are maladjusted or whatever. Everybody has a reason not to be unhappy or everybody has something to fight against. And I think he has that idea because that's the way they answer. When somebody asks me, What do you think? You should brace yourself? So education braces. But, you know, maybe I don't say I don't know what you have, but I get the idea not for the person, but for Andreas to feel that he's not so different or so handicapped. I have a great deal of affection and a great deal of respect for them, because they are people who are who are suffering a great deal and yet take their suffering in a very exemplary way. They are very courageous. They have a great deal of courage to deal with their situation and they have a basically positive outlook of a situation which one from the outside would deal with would deem to be quite grim. These young people redefine the words courage and interfaith. What they must endure is a hard thing for us to even imagine by day.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114031/file/216769#t=309.4,432.28"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114031/file/216769/transcript/61565/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Dr. Copage performs his medical magic to treat a previously neglected area of medicine by night.
