A 17 year old is shot near Baltimore's Inner Harbor and police continue to look for suspects. Good evening, everybody. I'm Pat Warren. Richard Share has the night off. The Inner Harbor is Baltimore's number one tourist attraction and some wonder how this might affect its image. The weekend team's Kai Jackson tells us police are taking the shooting very seriously. This is a typical Sunday at the Inner Harbor. People out enjoying the water and weather. What's different is that there's an increased police presence because a 17 year old was shot last night. It's not unusual to see police out here, but they're usually not looking for evidence from a shooting. As a shock. I didn't know anything. I was here probably 15 minutes before it happened. Police say around 1030, a 17 year old Baltimore student was shot in the right thigh and left knee after a dispute with a 16 year old. The argument apparently stemmed from a disagreement during the school year. Apparently the victim was shot around Pratt Street.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115809/file/219677#t=115.38,240.16"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115809/file/219677/transcript/62502/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Now, authorities say after he was hit, he started running towards the Light Street pavilion. And apparently the person who shot him was chasing him. All of that commotion found its way inside of the pavilion and started a panic. Wayne Baki owns a restaurant at the Light Street Pavilion. He says one of his customers started a panic when he began throwing tables to avoid the kids who are running by. He turned from his table and just turned the tables over as he went into the restaurant, causing a great deal of commotion. After that, the panic spread because kids were running through those doors. They knocked over some glass and there was a sign holder that was glass, knocked it over and broke. When they heard that, they were thinking it was some type of gun or something. But actually, I was standing right there. It was not true. Tourists we talked with say the shooting was unfortunate, but it won't deter them from visiting. It's a way with the bay, but obviously, I guess we got to get it under control. But we can't be inhibited by things like that. You got to do what you got to do. We're from Richmond suburbs right outside of Richmond, and we dealt with the same problem there. But we're not going to give up the city and what it has to offer just because of a few incidents. Police won't say how long the beefed up security will remain. But many consider last night's shooting an isolated event and not a trend. Kai Jackson, Channel 13 Eyewitness News. Early yesterday morning, fire gutted Randolph County High School. Investigators say they're sure it was arson. The school's principal created a firestorm last spring when he threatened to ban interracial couples from the school's prom. There was some tension the night of the fire because nobody knew who started it. We still don't know who started or if it was started by anybody. We have available manpower in here and other personnel to adequately provide for the security of all people in the area and to do the job that we feel is necessary here. The FBI and the state fire marshal are investigating. Meanwhile, the Justice Department will hold a hearing on Thursday to determine whether the principal should be removed. The battle of the blaze rages on out west, where nearly 40 brush fires are out of control. Wind and rough terrain are slowing down progress against one of the fires along the California Nevada border. At least three homes were destroyed, but there's no word of injuries. And that's Thursday. The idea is don't even walk into the park until the third inning. So the park is almost empty when they begin the game and everybody kind of comes in in the third inning. And that shows the players that you're not at all and the owners ownership. You're not all happy about this. It's an idea. It's like a about and we can pop that during the rest of the week. Well, it looks like they're going to take this thing all the way down to the hill, all the way up to Friday without any regard whatsoever for either the fans or the little people who earn maybe four bucks an hour. Working at the stadium is a terrible shame with the players set to walk off the diamonds on Friday. The two sides plan on meeting tomorrow on noneconomic issues. The real stuff. We'll have to wait until Wednesday when they continue to battle over free agency salary caps and revenue sharing. Today in Boston, Labor Secretary Robert Reich went to Fenway Park to assess the mood of the fans and came away with an idea he thinks might push the two sides to an agreement. Baseball is for kids. Grown ups only screw it up. Well, if every kid in America wrote a note or a card with their name and their age and where they were writing from and said, act like grown ups, owners and players, I will guarantee that those letters and those cards will go to the owners and the players. Bob Reich also spoke to Red Sox and Indians players and pledged the administration will do whatever it could to help to assist in the negotiations. However, Pat, he added that the two sides are going to have to agree to try to agree on this thing before he or anybody else in the administration is willing to step in. It doesn't sound like that gives us much to hope for. I don't think so. They are so far apart right at this point. And when you consider that they don't even get to the main issue until two days before the strike is supposed to start, I can't imagine how they could ever accomplish anything unless they, like Donald Fehr and Richard Ravitch into one room and just give them bread and water for a couple of days and make them hash it all out.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115809/file/219677#t=1887.86,1982.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115809/file/219677/transcript/62502/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, we'll talk to you a little bit more about that a little later. It's not unusual to see police out here, but they're usually not looking for evidence from a shooting shock. I didn't know anything. I was here probably 15 minutes before it happened. Police say around 1030, a 17 year old Baltimore student was shot in the right thigh and left knee after a dispute with a 16 year old. The argument apparently stemmed from a disagreement during the school year. Apparently the victim was shot around Pratt Street. Now, authorities say after he was hit, he started running towards the Light Street pavilion. And apparently the person who shot him was chasing him. All that commotion found its way inside of the pavilion and started to panic. Wayne Baki owns a restaurant at the Light Street Pavilion. He says one of his customers started a panic when he began throwing tables to avoid the kids who are running by. They knocked over some glass and there was a sign holder that was glass, knocked it over and broke. When they heard that, they were thinking it was some type of gun or something.
