Katherine Peters. Spell Katherine for me with a k t h e r I, Annie and Peters. Spell that p e t e r s. And your uncle was Max Block, right? When did he come over to this country? He came over in 1892. And how long did it take him to open up a beer garden? He built a hall in 1925 for parties. And then he started with the beer garden in 1933. So he came over from Bavaria, settled here in right here on the farm. Now, what is this here to suggest that this is Jessop? Yes. So he came from Bavaria. How did he ever wind up here in Jessops? I don't know. But his whole family came over, so he he built a beer garden. Right. And then a dance hall there. So when was that? 1925. And how old of a man was either? Well, he was born in 1896, I think 96. So he was in his early 20s, I guess, while 96, 1922. So there would be no. He was born in 1886, 1886. So he was in his 30s, a man of his 30s. Right. And when did when did the Blob pass away? In 1969. The old sign up and way up on the other side. The road. Right. How long was that thing? But all that was put up about, I guess in the 1950s. And I guess you could see that from both ways or 175, right? Because the road was different then. The road went right by the sun. And so that that's sort of announced that there was beer there close by, beer garden close by. Right. All those thirsty travelers. Right.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136836/file/253848#t=133.41,269.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136836/file/253848/transcript/71650/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And for people who like to dance. That's right. The what I would consider a very unusual display right down the road at a beer garden is the crucifix. Tell me about that. That's a German customer over there. They they have a lot of crucifixes along the road. A lot of them put a crucifix where there's an accident where somebody got killed. But this one here, just something that he wanted. And he was over Germany one time they ordered one. So that crucifix comes from Germany, from Germany that had over that day. How old that would be roughly. I guess he I guess he had that it already in the 1950s. So that goes back to the 40s and 50s. Right. And it's sort of like a custom for the Germans to put them in their places of business or not only business that their home place to. A lot of Germans do that and you have kept that tradition. Right. So now this place has been here since 1922, 19, 19, 25, 1925. So that would be 65 would be 40 years. So we're talking. We're talking 60, 70 some years, right? 90. Right. 60 at 30 is 90. 1922. And this is 1990. Well, the hall was built in 25. Set in 1925. And this is so. That's 70 years. 71 years. The place has been here for 71 years. Right. I imagine it's. Been responsible for a lot of good times. Yes. Yeah. A lot of good times. A lot of people met here, got engaged and got married. A lot of weddings had weddings right here. Some of them. Not all of them. And you would think a place like this would still cater to a lot of people, but a lot of old people.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136836/file/253848#t=270.95,406.34"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136836/file/253848/transcript/71650/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"A lot of young people, too. Now we have a lot of young people coming in here. Drinking and dancing, dance and not drinking that much, but dancing with the young people nowadays. They're not beer drinkers. The ones that come here don't drink that much. Some do, but they. A lot of them don't drink that much. Well, now, I saw a young group. You have a group out there who learn to dance. Here they come. They came here to learn how to dance. And now they're winning trophies. That's right. All over. That's right. What about them? All the way up in Michigan, they're called the polka kids. Give me a little bit more information. Well, they've been at Michigan 3 or 4 times, three different years. And they won the national first prize. And the teachers that teach them dance here, they dance here and they teach grown ups, too. When we opened this in 76, they taught about 300 people every Wednesday for about eight, ten years. They still teach. So you had the you had the old hall, right? The old hall held. How many? About 350. Then in 1976, you helped break ground for this place, right? My husband had passed away a year or two years before, so my kids and I did this. So. So, what do you think? Max would be pleased with what He's. I don't know. I came into that before I started. If I would have told him I was going to do it, he would have told me I'm crazy, But I think he would like. It looks kind of nice. I really think he'd like it. Put a smile on his face. Right. The Rhinelander band. The engine in a very in German. Right. Beer drinking hole. So work all right. It works pretty good. They teach for an hour and a half in the beginning. Then they have dancing till 11:00. The old hall, the old dance, all the original dance. All that your that your uncle opened held. How many? 350. And this one isn't holds a thousand. Now, your Uncle Max brought some brought some. Some men and women over here from the old country. Right. Sponsored them. He sponsored them. Then he had to let them live in the house with him until he got him a job. Now, I brought some fellow over here named John. Right. What happened, John? Egg roll. Well, we met and we got married to get married here. Not right here. Did what? Was your uncle happy about that? I think so. Sort of kept kept the German bloodline on. Right. Okay, now, tell me, what's what's next for this place? What's what next is going to happen? I mean, it's been here now for 70 some years. What do you think? What do you think's around the corner? Well, I know when I'm not here anymore. My son's going to keep it up. What happens after that? I don't know. Are there any good grandchildren? I had 12 grandchildren. Any interest? Some of them. A couple of them. Are they kind of like being here? Right. Like the way the place looks, They tend bar every Saturday. So they like the music? Yep. Do you dance? I dance. Well, I'm talking about when I come back here, when the music plays to get you to out on a dance floor. Sure. What's your favorite kind of dance? Polka. Well, the walls. Walls would be good for him. And you find anything I can do is anything. Now you say your name is Piers and you remarry. I remarried. I remarried The man who plays the man. Right. So I go I really go by Catherine Avril Peters with a lot of things. So now your husband, your husband passed away. When? 1974. 1974. That's been over 20 years ago. And now you married Arthur Peters, And he does what? He plays electric guitar in the band. He's been made a musician. You can't get away from him. Now, I guess I can see a good player. I think so. Good guitar player. Where'd he pick up his skills? I don't know. Is he German? He's from Pennsylvania. But you're mainly Dutch. No. No, I don't think he has much German in. I'm. So one of the other black and white. There's one there like that. That's okay. That's my daughter, right? That's my youngest daughter. My son. Now he's married with three boys.
