Well, Norm, back in 1978 I was doing my rendition of The Prodigal Son by James Wells and Weldon Johnson from the Book of God's Trombones. And how did you were you invited to go up there? That was African, I believe. I, I guess they call that African American Week. Yes. And we were invited by the school, I believe at that time. I was invited by the Bureau of Recreation and Parks. So whenever they would have any special events where they needed somebody to come in and do a little public reading, public speaking, they'd give me a call. That's how I stumbled upon that. So you were then what? An award winning public speaker? You could say that I was. And that's why. And then you. So you were asked to go out there and do that, right? Yes. The Prodigal Son by James Weldon Johnson was actually one of the short stories or poems that I used for a competition in which I won first place I for the state of Maryland. Well, you saw the all the kids. You saw the TV reporters, the cameras for you. Nervous? Yeah. Well, when I get on TV or in front of a camera, I'm always nervous. But what about then? I think I was probably petrified at 16. Anybody my age, I probably would be. Now, you're a native Baltimore. That's correct. Born and raised right here. Born and raised. What area? Basically, I was brought up in the area of Born to Cure a hospital. When I got to the age of maybe 12, 13, we moved up near Carver Carver High School. So you graduated? Yes. From what school? I graduated from Walbrook Senior High School. And now you are a hairstylist? That's correct. Getting ready to open up a brand new place of business. Yes. Working hard, getting this place together? Well, it has been a lot of work. We've had to basically actually rebuild this place from the inside out. And why do you think it will all be done? Well, we're hoping to open sometime in May, mid-May, the latter part of May.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136885/file/253897#t=604.27,724.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136885/file/253897/transcript/71668/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Basically, all of the work has been done as far as the carpentry is concerned. We just have to come in and do the decorating and place the styling furniture in. So you're doing some of this work yourself? Yeah, I am. Most of the work is done by me. How did you ever get involved in and and hairstyling? Well, I guess it came as I wanted to have some type of trade under my belt. I figured the best thing to do is to get a tree that I would be comfortable with and enjoy doing. Other than that, I went to school. A friend of mine was going to hairstyling school and told me how much of a great thing it was. You know, actually I didn't take hairstyling very seriously when I first started it. A friend of mine started going to hairstyling school, Jewels, Beauty School. At that time, they were located on Baltimore Street. I joined the school, finished the school and had no idea that I would become one of Baltimore's best hair stylists. So obviously, then, you are an award winning hairstylist now? Yes. I'm award winning. I am internationally known. I have some of my work published in some of the international hair journals. Just recently you participated. Hold on. I get it. Don't move. Just. Just double check this. Make sure you're not moving around. That's perfect. My God. We're doing well. Just recently participated in a and a show not too long ago at Rice. Your town hall. That's correct. And a lot of the hairstyles were yours. Well, actually, all of the hairstyles that you might see on that cut were actually hairstyles that I had stopped actually, myself. Some of that stuff is is still considered very fashionable. Well, actually, it is very fashionable at this point now. So you are a couple of years ahead of your time. Yes, I would say that house I really couldn't resist my first challenge. You got you jumped around at my microphone. Well, that's my forte. I love theater. I want to be a professional actor. And that was the whole reason that I actually started doing hair in the beginning. I wanted to come through theater, through a back door. I wanted to be a hair stylist for the stars. I wanted to be a screenplay hairstylist. And thereby getting the opportunity to get into know the producers, the writers, the actors, and to get in and to actually do some theater, which is my main objective in life. And when you don't have chairs on the stand, I don't know. So this whole thing with the hairstyle, originally you were into drama. You belong to some drama classes. Yes. And and that is in the back of your mind. You want to do that? You still want to? I still want to do that. That's my main objective in life, my main goal. But I don't want to go to New York to be a starving actor. So I wanted to develop a skill that I could go to New York or go to California and pursue my acting career. When I finished with him, you would never know it. So you got some from Marty to that, most definitely. And it's not. Hair Club is not right. It's not Hair club. All right. Well, in other words, you can you can do something with it just the way it is. Yes, I can. Well, I want to add a little wind, but it wouldn't be hair club. The. Do you still recall the prodigal son? Well, I recall bits and pieces of it. Well, yes. Just in case. And the young man whipped into a far off country. He came to a place where there was lots of laughing and dancing and singing. He stopped a passer by on the street and he said, Tell me, what city is this? The passer by laughed and said, Don't you know this is Babylon? Babylon, That great city of Babylon. Hold it right there. Don't move. This. All right. So, Ron, what's around the corner for you? I mean, you're working on this place. You're got to get it together. You don't look like the kind of person who's going to be satisfied with one thing too long except your beautiful wife now. But other than that, what's. What do you see for yourself around the corner? Well, I think the next thing is to get this salon up and running there. It would allow me the flexibility to travel.
