The winter weather just refuses to loosen its grip. It's been another difficult day for thousands of us. Most the main roads are clear today with just some patchy ice here and there. But the secondary streets and sidewalks are still a far different story. And our Ron Max has been sort of navigating between the two all morning long, since before dawn. As a matter of fact, and joins us live right now Ron. Well, Don, we're on a very icy side street, actually, Eastwood drive at the edge of Harrington Park in northeast Baltimore. And I guess you can see behind me you need a little innovation in this winter of 94. And these youngsters of all ages are doing just that. They've turned Eastwood drive into their own private skating rink, and they seem to be enjoying it. Innovation is certainly the word. You really need that in these very treacherous times with ice all over Baltimore, especially on the side streets. As you can see right here, as we're just trying to do anything and everything to get a grip on the winter of 94, it's become Baltimore's newest and sometimes most treacherous adventure, trying to walk on all the ice. Jack Morgan found that out as he navigated 36th Street in Hamden this morning. Terrible. Terrible. You can't really get along. You've got to hold on to the wall to get out. And that's what you were doing? Yeah. Yeah. Well, you made it. Yeah, so far. Hi. Where did you go yet? Okay. He does a lot of walking and he may have the best walking on ice tip we've heard so far. You can't slip if you just tired old socks or a piece of rag, anything you just tied around your shoe under the sole, under the heel, anywhere you want. Long as it's under the bottom, you can tie it on top however you want, and you just don't slip on the ice. Now, if you think you have difficulty just walking in this weather, how would you like to try to deliver sodas in this mess? It's treacherous driving and walking and you had the chance of hurting your back when you put your basic hand through it. Easy way to crawl. But in all of our drinks and big to be inject your heart. Hammond has been doing that. So as we slip get into our let's hope your time in right now wouldn't that be nice. Well we're back live on his drive at the edge of Herring Run park now out in Baltimore County has about 800 tons of salt and 3000 tons slag do all. That's what we're told by the ice in Baltimore County. We live as George Rockport. These frozen. We do have some problems in the area. First off, on 95 northbound on the Kennedy Highway, a tractor trailer is off the roadway there. Some are losing a lane as you work your way up into Harford County between 152 and Route 24 northbound. Be aware, an accident with a vehicle off the roadway. Jared Phil Pike in Sunset Lane, not too far from the intersection at Merriman Mill Road. And the roadway is icy there. Around the Beltway, no major trouble spots. The roadway, for the most part, is in good shape. Continue to use caution on the bridges, overpasses and ramps around the area. Tunnel traffic is in good shape. Western Maryland, some may may see a foot of snow in our area. We're going to see 2 to 4in of snow in the metro grid during the overnight. His mother, Lia Adler, is his biggest fan, and she's waited years to hear her son tell the story of the Holocaust because it's an ordeal her own family suffered through. Today isn't just like any other day for Lia Adler. She's the proud mother of Steven Spielberg. Adler recounts what happened when her son heard that his film, Schindler's List, received 12 Oscar nominations. And I screamed, and then Steve called me, and he is so like, he's shocked. He said, Mom, do you believe it? I mean, he doesn't believe it. Adler owns a small kosher restaurant in Los Angeles. When Steve did a film when he was in high school in Arizona, he wanted his 2.5 hour science fiction thing called Firelight. We could spread 20,000 tons. So that really gives you an idea of the kind of impact that ice storms have had on the area. Well, what that means is for snow, the plows can clear a lot of that away. Well, as we told you earlier, Governor Schaefer is trying to buy time from the General Assembly to close a deal for pro football in Baltimore. But in his commentary tonight, Michael Lasker wonders, Is the governor calling the same signals as some other players? There's a lot of different groups working on a lot of different deals, and I hope they're all on the same page here. While Governor Schaefer says he's had talks with Al Davis of the L.A. Raiders, Mayor Schmoke has been talking with Jim Sparrows of the Canadian Football League. The governor says forget that February 14th deadline we talked about. We've got a chance for an NFL team. But the mayor seems to have a different game plan unless he hears of a firm NFL deal. He says he's ready to sign on Monday for Canadian Football Memorial Stadium. Keep in mind, while this is going on, Jack Kent Cook still wants to move his Redskins to Laurel and a Poland wants to move his bullets and capitals, maybe to Baltimore. So what we have is a kind of organized chaos. Will the prospect of Canadian ball scare off Al Davis? Will Davis scare off Jack Kent Cook? Will all of them scare off a Poland? We don't know. What we need is a chance for everyone to catch his breath. And that means loosen the reins of that February 14th deadline. We've come too far down the road to cut our own throats with a deadline That's strictly arbitrary.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136334/file/252918#t=2794.83,2894.28"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136334/file/252918/transcript/71112/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'm Michael, Alaska. How does it affect whether this is a pretty complex topic? It really is, but it's try to give you an answer. One of the biggest factors that may have an effect on weather is human activity In the last couple of hundred years, it may have caused the Earth's temperature rise a little bit. This is called the greenhouse effect. Basically, the pollution that results from things like manufacturing plants, automobiles that everyday activity add gases to the atmosphere that could result in an absorption of heat warming, the earth and perhaps changing climate over time. Now it's probably about five, 4 or 5 hours away from the Baltimore area. It's moving in our general direction already. We lead it off this week with a group gig in Greensboro, North Carolina, where the minor league Huntsville Blast hockey team took time out from its game against the Greensboro Monarchs to spend a little time greeting the fans. Not all really friendly get together as the blast players even assaulted a woman in a wheelchair and wound up ripping a panel of plexiglass right off the boards. Also this week, right here in Charm City, an anchor geek as a two foot garden snake caused one member of the Eyewitness News team to exit stage left and go, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And last but certainly not least, there was the middle distance runner, Susie Hamilton, great athlete, lousy mathematician.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136334/file/252918#t=4291.75,4404.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136334/file/252918/transcript/71112/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"She had the 1500 meter event, all but one this week at George Mason University, but lost count of the laps, pulled up one loop too early. It's surprising how many things get billed to your phone today. They can fill everything. You can order flowers to bill into your phone. It's really hard. But I think this is going to surprise a lot of people. 800 telephone service, of course, has been around for a very long time. It's a way to reach your long distance party for free. Or is it if you're talking to Monty Hall, you know the deal. You'll pay for a 900 call, but an 800 call is toll free. No charge at all for the call. So how then did Tony Robey end up with a $10 charge to begin with? She says no one in her family made the call. But aside from that, how could there be any charge for an 800 call? I found a real nice lady at the telephone company. She said, as far as we know, they cannot charge you for any 800 number. It is a toll free service number. The statement from interactive billing, which sent the charge contained Robeson's phone number and a bogus credit card number. It says the caller gave, but it wasn't charged to her phone bill or to her credit card, but mailed to her home address. Well, how did they ever get that information? It also said if you had billing inquiries, you could call a certain 800 number. I wonder if they charge you for that call. Robbia is upset not only about the bogus bill and the release of her address, but the nature of the alleged call. One of the girls in the office called the original 800 number to try to find out what it was all about, and a recording came on the phone. Something about wet, wonderful, wild, crazy guys. And she was so shocked, she hung up. Good advice. You know, I want to point out here that the phone company has the obligation of providing the address information under the tariffs. They do have to provide it. So it's not that they're just out for the book. They're required to do it. So although it sure teaches you to check your phone bill carefully. What about regulations? I mean, surely somebody must be aware of this and someone on the state level or federal level must be looking. Yeah. The Federal Communications Commission has passed laws that are now going into effect to prevent all these ways companies have found of getting around this, like having an 800 number and then, you know, calling you back collect. The state is very concerned because they've already gone through record amount of salt and they're only down to about 10% of what they have, which, of course, is the question with all of this coming up our way, does that mean that the state is going to run out of salt? Well, we posed that question to Liz Kalinowski with the State Highway Administration. We certainly hope that we don't completely run out of salt, but if we do get hit very soon with another severe ice storm, that is possible and that means we will be reduced to focusing primarily on use of abrasives. Now, what that means is so they're stretching their ice. Right now, the salt, though, they're loading one bucket of salt. They're loading one bucket of sand into these trucks. And that's going to help them stretch out the salt that they have a little bit longer. Also some slag and other things. And hopefully they're going to make it through. The attorneys will take on a bigger role as the Harding Kerrigan battle moves from the ice rink to the courthouse. Tonight, Primetime Live looked at why so many people have bad feelings about lawyers. The night team's Dennis Edwards found out what some local lawyers are doing to police themselves and what you can do if the lawyer you get isn't all he or she should be. Well, ladies and gentlemen, as you know, in this particular class, we're going to be dealing with an interesting aspect of the lawyer client privilege. Professor Abraham Dashes University of Maryland law class is wrestling with some sticky ethical issues like how far does the attorney client relationship go? Or how does an attorney respond if his client shares self-incriminating evidence? Questions that for students like Alicia Ferguson, too, struggle. Will I be able to live with my conscience when I try to protect my client's interests because they're my number one responsibility? How far how much of myself, my willing to put on the line in order to serve up to my duty of being a lawyer? But imagine the pressure you'd be under in those circumstances. Professor Dash says the public's fear of the legal system, lawyers and judges contributes to what some call lawyer resentment or bashing. He says many attorneys bring criticism on themselves by taking on too many cases. They, therefore can many times be overburdened because of caseload, which is why you have so many cases of negligence, failure to communicate. The question on most of our minds is how do you make sure you don't wind up on the wrong side of a lawyer client relationship? There are some things you can do to prevent that.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136334/file/252918#t=6036.82,6129.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136334/file/252918/transcript/71112/annotation/60","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission says word of mouth is a good way to find a lawyer. The key questions did prior clients find them ethical? Did they charge a fair legal fee? Promptly respond to calls, letters and meet often with the client. A clear written agreement between the lawyer and client is also recommended. There are also legal directories that list attorney ratings. But what if your lawyer is negligent or incompetent? In Maryland, there is something you can do about it. But there's also something lawyers can do to protect themselves from frivolous complaints. You can file a complaint with the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission based on complaints. Melvyn Hershman says 36 lawyers were disbarred or suspended for unethical behavior last year. 12 others were reprimanded. Criminal convictions. Theft of client funds. Serious misrepresentation. A pattern of neglect that is more than one case. But be careful if your complaints are found to be frivolous. Some attorneys have been known to sue clients for defamation of character. We have reports of some pretty moderate sleet across the area. We had some snow for a minute, but right here for maybe a half hour, an inch of snow reported already in Jacksonville, up in northern northeastern Baltimore County to the Harford County line down to the south. This is some moderate to heavy sleet happening in southern Virginia. The strange thing about this storm is the temperature aloft. We have a lot of warm, settled air coming up to the south, bringing this moisture in. We expect the freezing line aloft to be right across the Baltimore area, literally east to west, just across the Baltimore. That means north of that freezing line aloft. It'll be a mainly snow event. That's why we're kind of concerned north and west of the city. There could be some major snowfall south of the city, major sleet accumulations and further south, a lot of freezing rain. Hopefully we won't get all that in the form of freezing rain. Computers now printing out about two inches of melt in precipitation. That's a heavy, heavy rain storm. That could mean some serious icing tech with the temperatures around the region. 18 in the city right now, also in Cumberland, six in Harrisburg, 20 in Dover, 23 in Ocean City. Freezing rain and sleet reported down there, 21 down in Richmond. So temperatures is certainly cold enough in the low levels, but we do have some warm air coming in aloft. 40 to 25 is normal, 20 to 15 today. West of the area, thunderstorms, heavy rains, three inches of rain in some places down there. The area of low pressure sitting over portions of Mississippi and Alabama moving in this general direction, which means some of the ocean air will come in aloft. But just just north and west of the city, there may be enough cold air where 8 to 12in of snow and somewhere not too far distant from the Baltimore area, Harrisburg maybe could get 15, 17in of snow. That is a possibility with this storm system because there's a lot of moisture with it and just enough cold air in place in some areas north and west of the city where we can see it. In fact, I think it's kind of system where south of the city you may have three inches of snow. Tulsa may get 5 or 6 copies, you might get 8 or 10, something like that. And as soon as you head up toward Pennsylvania line, you're looking for a foot of snow or more. That's a very distinct possibility. This storm, we thought, was going to give us snow over the weekend. Probably just give us a little bit of rain as it looks right now, because I think we're going to get a little bit more warm air coming in by the latter part of the weekend. Temperatures tomorrow, critical once again, should be above freezing extreme southeastern section of the state where they should see some rain by the afternoon.
