Imports of Japanese cars are restricted in 95 % of the world. Canada limits Japanese car imports to 18 % of its total. And bicycles, semiconductors, textiles, you name it, we're importing it, while United States manufacturers slump. 75 % of all of the shoes sold in the United States are made outside. So six shoe plants closed in Tennessee last year and four more will close this year. Imports are now 40 percent of all children's apparel. And then the teachers say, quit rattling your papers. Right? All right. It's going to be a tough week this week, weather -wise, in that even though we're into September and theoretically Labor Day is the end of summer, baza, baza, baza, it is going to be hot, humid, and very summer -like for the next couple days. and we're going to get a visit from the remnants of tropical storm Elena. coming through this area on Thursday. And that's gonna be our first chance of any cool down and getting rid of the humidity. Right now on T .V. Hill, it's a steamy night outside. All the plants are enjoying that humidity. I think it has to do with osmosis. 81 in the city, 74 in the suburbs. If not, when I go back to school tomorrow, I'll learn the right word. Winds in the southwest at six, humidity 82%. Now take a look at your national radar summary. Basically, we're looking at a couple of things. First off, this is the remnants of trial of now tropical depression. Elena, this storm has lost all of its punch real fast peak winds now 35 miles an hour. It's expected to track northwest now into Arkansas and by the middle of the week, it's going to latch onto this cold front, which is sending some big league thunderstorms through the upper plane states tonight. It's going to latch up and be pulled along and into our area expect rain from the remnants of Elena to come through here Thursday and then Canadian high pressure should clear things out for the weekend here. Take a look at our cloud cover map. This is turning out to be a pretty strong cold front and it's going to affect us. Not this little boy sitting up here in northwest Pennsylvania. This is a very weak front. Our controlling weather feature is a big area of high pressure over the Carolina coast and it's pumping up all this warm moist air. How big is this thing? Let me tell you how big this thing is. This high pressure so dominant, it itself forced Elena off to the northwest. It's unrelenting. It's not giving up. That's our source of humidity. Put the map in motion. Watch the front turn warm, go north. Here's gonna be our next event. That's Thursday, and that's gonna be rain showers, high pressure in the upper Plains states. Hopefully that's gonna be our weekend. Look at the five day forecast. Hot temperatures for the next couple of days. We'll get a cool off with the showers from Elena. Cross your fingers. Weekend could turn out nice and sunny. 84 degrees to end the week. Eight o 'clock tomorrow morning. Hazy uh, humid. It's gonna be a warm day. 68 degrees drive carefully going back to work. I know. That was just Baltimore celebrating. Another win, a big one. On this Labor Day break, the very gainfully employed laborers of big league baseball put on a good show at Memorial Stadium, in particular, Cal Ripken Jr. and his best outing in the summer, clouding two home runs, driving in six, and leading the Bears to a 12 -4 route of the athletics. It's been feast or favin' these days, but it's Oakland that's chasing that pennant this September. They were tied at one when Cowell launches the first of two homers, ducks inside the foul pole, And that capped. a seven runs, second inning. The Birds were on top eight to one, but then it got hairy in the fourth. McGregor allowed a solo homer, and then Murphy, and then David Henderson here, a couple across and made it eight to four. But the Birds come right back in their half. Renneke singling to right. Rip will score the Birds ninth run, and we go to the eighth inning. It's now 10 to four. And Cowan quirks his second of the day over the wall. 20th of the season, and with Wiggins on base, 93 runs batted in for the season. 12 to 4 was the final for Scotty McGregor. The win with benefits from Ken Dixon's three and a third inning of scoreless relief. He got the save and the Orioles big win this afternoon. Now elsewhere today in the West, the Angels crushed Detroit. The final was 11 to 1 and on the scoreboard, you see right there, 3 to 2, Toronto won. And New York kept pace 8 to 7 to stay 4 behind. Boston is clouding Texas in the ninth inning. And Minnesota beat Milwaukee. Now we'll take a look in the West. The Angels in Detroit in front of just 19 ,000 in Detroit. When lonesome, George Hendrick kept a nine run fourth inning with a home run. His second since escaping Pittsburgh for Detroit. And boy, you talk about a slump in franchise. Darrell Evans for Detroit, it'll go. But it accounted for their lone run of the day. The Royals are chasing the Angels out west. Host in Chicago, Hal McCrae, who is hot as a firecracker with a home run in the second to make it 1 -0. Now watch Rudy Law for Chicago. Almost will take the head off of Mark Gubisaw, the pitcher. Now the run scored to tie the game at one but the Royals went on to win at three to two was the final. In the National League you know I guess Tommy Lasorda has performed nothing sort of a miracle in the National League West so far. But the Dodgers with guys named Maldonado, Duncan and Baylor have run away but now they may be on their way to losing five in a row. And Pete Rose's Reds may have crept within five and a half at the end of the day. The Rose Reds and Pete today was 0 for 3 but he got this walk and it was important. because it set up Dave Parker, who parked this baby his 23rd home run of the year turned out to be the winning hit. As roses reds beat St. Louis four to one this afternoon. Elsewhere in the National League East the Mets today and Gary Carter with a shot look at Nettles with a grab but too late to get anybody and Hernandez with later score from second base and then it batted hit one into right field. Now watch Wally Bachman try to run on this throw and it's going to be close and in the best Pete Rose style tumbles across 6 -1 the Mets right now in the sixth inning. 4 -4. L .A. on the ropes again with Montreal on the 10th inning and Philly has defeated San Francisco 4 -3. Pittsburgh took Atlanta in 7 -2. Houston a winner today. The U .S. Open has been kind of the private domain of John McEnroe for most of the 80s. He advances to the next round with an easy walk past Tomas Smith today and next he'll meet the young foreigner with the awesome talent but not Boris Becker. Becker upset today and you're watching early on in his match with Jokan Nystrom. Nistrum went on to beat him in four sets today. Becker the Wimbledon champion winning just one set and dropping out before his Anticipated match with John McEnroe Mots V lander the third seed here Advancing along with McEnroe who again will get Nistrum next up at the US tennis open It's a big names axed in the NFL today as they got down to size quarterback Jack Thompson Joe Pasarjic and Jim Zorn all that going and college football. You saw a terrific ending today Georgia was down 13 to 9 with a minute left when Vince Dooley unleashed his dogs. The defense here with about a minute to go they go in they block the kick and then they slap it into the end zone and fall on it and they look like they win 16 to 13. Watch this now Mike Shula the coach's kid will hit four of five and move Alabama all the way down the field and then with other 20 seconds left from 17 yards out bullets it over the middle completes it Alabama pulls out the first CFA game of the year on ABC. 20 to 16 was the final.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144446/file/266965#t=3335.17,3592.1
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144446/file/266965/transcript/77134/annotation/153
Speaker 23: Thank you, Lou. The police had been flying in a helicopter over this field when they spotted what they thought was a huge marijuana crop. They even invited reporters to go along on the raid. So the next day, they swooped down on the field, guns drawn, cameras rolling, and rounded up a banner crop of potatoes, which I don't think is even close.
