Steve Canty, our Wizard of Fun, will cast a spell on how you can make toys from soap. Good idea. Joan Embery from the San Diego Zoo shows us some wonderful, furry little creatures with lots of legs and tails. And Jake Green tells us what's going on this weekend, including the Indian Festival, which is coming up at the Hopkins Plaza, having some trouble getting the kids to take a bath. But maybe that's because kids like to have a little bit of soap time and some fun water toys and bathtub toys to play with. Hi, I'm Steve Carney. And I'm going to show you how to make some neat toys, especially suited for the bath, tub and water right now. What could be more fun than floating around in the bath tub with your your lobster? Ooh. Or maybe you'd like something a little more tossing like a swan. Well, these are soap floats, and they're simply made by taking pieces of soft plastic, cutting them into shapes, and putting them into a bar of soap that floats. Here, I'm going to show you how to start off with a piece of soft plastic. Now, maybe it's a jar lid or an old wastepaper basket, or maybe even an old soft fish pan. But the plastic must be soft. And then with the ballpoint pen mark on the piece of plastic a shape, this time I'm going to do something like a simple sail, nothing greater than wood or toys that have something to do with water. Now, make sure that at the bottom of the shape that you cut out, you put a little spike. It's that spike.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488#t=79.8,150.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488/transcript/38966/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You're going to end up sticking into the soap. There's my sail and there's my bar of soap, and I'm going to do a little sailing over the ocean blue. Now, of course, there are those kids who like to make a little bit of a mess in the bathtub. And for those kids, what could be more fun than playing with soap? Crayons, yet crayons made from soap that you can draw all over the walls of the bathtub, all over the sink, all over the mirror, and they simply wash off because they're made from soap. Here, I'm going to show you the recipe. Now, we start off with a bowl and this is the bowl. We're going to put about a quarter of a cup of water and into the water. I'm going to add some soft powder, some soap powder. Now, this is very pure. So powder and I suggest you use the powder. And as I mix it up, I'm going to ask helping hand, would you add about 20, maybe 30 drops of food coloring? Now you can add whatever color you like. The more color you add, the darker it will be. But about 20 or 30 drops would be fine and you mix it up until it comes out to be a nice thick paste. Yeah, I'm just going mixed up a little bit in the center here to show you how. And once you have it mixed, you can scoop it up and either molding your hands into a ball. In this case, I'm going to put it into an ice cube tray and that's going to help form the crayon. And after you let it dry for maybe a day, two days, you end up with a soap crayon. I'll be seeing you next week with some more things you can make out of scrap.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488#t=151.1,225.03"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488/transcript/38966/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We usually think of kangaroos as crown dwelling animals, but these kangaroos are specially adapted to living in the trees. I am John Embree here at the San Diego Zoo with our Good Fellows tree kangaroos from the forests of New Guinea. When it comes to babies are joeys, as they're called. A tree kangaroo is like any other kangaroo or marsupial. After birth, the babies are raised in a pouch. This little fellow, or should I say good fellow, was about the size of a peanut when he was born. Now, at six months old, he's just about ready to explore the world outside of Mom's pouch. Tree kangaroos have shorter hind legs and smaller feet than other kangaroos. This makes it much easier for them to climb in the trees. They also have rough pads on their hind feet to keep them from slipping on the branches and sharp claws which dig into the woods. A tree kangaroos tail is smaller than other kangaroo tails and is used to bounce. Embrace the animal as it climbs. Land kangaroos are known for their great leaping ability. Tree kangaroos are good jumpers, too. Only they travel from tree to tree. Tree kangaroos will venture from the branches and spend much of their time on the ground. It's believed that wild tree kangaroos climb the trees mainly to eat leaves and fruit and to escape their predators. These animals are seldom seen in captivity, and that's not because they're in danger of extinction, but because the forests of New Guinea are very inaccessible. And a lot of people also ask me, how do you get to the streetcar museum? The road's closed. That's not true. You come down to Maryland and Lafayette and make a right turn, even though there's a sign that says the road's closed, it's not because there's just road being repaired. I want you to go down there and have yourself a great weekend, but don't go away because I've got more to tell you. And this weekend at Hopkins Plaza, it's India Day festivals. Here, you'll see a proud people, a colorful people. You'll see theatrics, much dancing and more. To be at India Day 81 is to be a part of India Day 81. I'm losing the skirt again. I tell you, listen, as normal, the food is going to be delicious. As much food. There's many artifacts which I'd like to comment on. Personally, I think they're beautiful. You'll learn a lot about the people's neighborhood and their country, and it's just going to be beautiful. And as always, the food is going to be finger lickin good. All this is fried chicken in the store, honey. How about it? Have a great weekend. Thanks to I, you know, not many rock and roll stars specialize in playing the accordion. What can I make, dad? Now, let me give you a big clue. Most kids would just rather tinker around the workshop than build something big and grandiose, you know, like. Like playing with a box of hinges and nuts and bolts. Or maybe you've got a box of nails, a box of old nails lying around your basement like this. Well, you know what you can make with a bunch of nails? A musical chime, a wind chime. Let me show you how. The only thing you need to do is to take some nails and bigger ones sound better and hang them from some thin strings. You can hang them as many as you want. You can try to even put them in order, maybe from the big one down to the smallest. And when you're banging with another nail, that sounds nice. So you can also take all those nails on strings and hang them on a stick or maybe a close hang and make a wind chime. You know, spring's coming up. You might want to put it outside a little musical sound. And along with spring comes bugs. What the bugs have to do with the workshop where you make a creature cage? You know, kids can make a creature cage to collect the bugs, much like in those glass jars that kids go running around with, it could break. How do you make it? Well, start off with a couple of tin cans. Now, these tin cans can come from dog food, maybe tuna fish or salmon. Take the lids off, clean them out, and inside goes a piece of screening. Oh, this comes from a piece of screening that I was just using to fix this screen.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488#t=497.67,572.16"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488/transcript/38966/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You can cut it with the scissors, roll it up into a turbo like that, put it into one end of the tin can and then are loaded up with a little bit of food for the bugs to eat, one to try to create an environment as close to the root as possible. After you put the bugs in close the other live here you got a creature cage that you keep the kids busy for a while. If someone told you you had eyes like a hawk, they'd be paying you quite a compliment because birds of prey are known for their excellent eyesight. Hi, I'm Joan Embree here at the San Diego Zoo. And this is Tandy, our red tailed hawk hawks, our birds of prey and hunt for small mammals, birds, reptiles and insects to survive. They are very beneficial in keeping the pest population down. The Hawks outstanding vision aids them with their hunting. They can spot a tiny mouse or grasshopper scampering across the ground from as high as 500 feet in the air, powerful curved claws. Our talons grasp and transport the prey and strong hook beaks tear it in the wild red tailed hawks begin to hunt when they're about seven weeks old. These four week old chicks are being raised by California State Fish and Game official and soon will be turned over to falconers to be taught how to hunt. It's hope that when they're released, they'll be able to fend for themselves. The mother of these chicks was killed by a poacher, even though all hawks and other birds of prey are protected by state and federal laws.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488#t=572.85,665.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76290/file/162488/transcript/38966/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"These young hawks are lucky because they were rescued. It might have been for roughage, it might have been for taste, but it was probably for how easy it was to chunk some smashed grain in a pot and boil it to get a quick bowl of gruel or meal that led to the first cereals. Besides, people were lousy cooks during the medieval times. They usually just ate twigs and bark during famines. Hi, I'm Buffalo George. And you caught me in my bathrobe again because we're going to talk about cereal. Big names. Wheaties was another major munchie during 1924. It came from a mistake when somebody spilled bran gruel on a hot stove and it flaked out. Wheaties has always been associated with physical fitness. Even in the 1930s, they sponsored Jack Armstrong, all-American Boy. Manufacturers have to stick in all kinds of vitamins in today's cereal. And there's all kinds of rules about advertising cereal to little kids. Did you know in advertising, they have to say part of a well-balanced breakfast and then they have to show milk, toast and butter. Cereals break down into corn, oats, wheat, rice and bran. They perfect rough it frosted, coated and stamp it into shapes. But it's still pretty much the same when mixed with milk. It just winds up being mushy gruel like the old days. Hot cereals are a popular winter treat like oatmeal and cream of wheat. Remember Ralston? Oh, and remember the prizes. I remember when Sister Callistus took away my Captain Midnight Decoder whistle propeller ring the same day I got it. Another tip. I suggest you talk to your kids or yourself into trying natural tones. Cereals instead of cereals that are coated or that have marshmallows or tiny cookies. Ralston Purina's. Chex Mix. Great Products. Rice Chex Wheat Chex Corn Chex. I tend to lean towards Kellogg's more than post, except for Grape-Nuts, which may be the best cereal yet. Then you can pop into this very soft, very full wool skirt, very delicate blouse and short fitted jacket. Or you could go for socks, knickers, and a more roomy full jacket. The short jackets are going to be big this season. And with clothes like these, you don't have to ride horses to enjoy the country class. Look. But what about those times when you're feeling more practical? Then think about climbing a mountain trail and go for the laird. Look, corduroy pants, turtleneck, flannel shirt and puffy jacket all allow you to be a true adventurer because they're designed for action. Then for those cold winter days when you feel like snuggling up in something warm and pretty. There's the Icelandic look borrowed from a country whose people definitely know how to keep out the cold. Here, I'm talking about heavy off white sweaters with pale gray and beige patterns pulled over jeans and boots. Then there are those poetic moments. So when you want to come in from the cold and slip into something frilly and feminine. These clothes will remind you of the Renaissance and Elizabethan eras with their ruffles and softness, and they'll definitely enhance a romantic mood.
