It didn't end with a strikeout, a homer or a routine fly. No Major League Baseball ends this year with a whimper of a conference call by the team owners. The announcement ending the 1994 season came this afternoon. Sports director John Baron is here to begin our team coverage of the year that was in baseball. Interesting that really the way that the announcement came was by way of facsimile transmission. Seely just went out there to answer questions and expand on it. Baseball history made this day in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Acting Commissioner Bud Selig expanded on the announcement, which was made by fax. The announcement that so many people and millions of people had hoped they would never have to hear. The rest of the baseball season has been canceled, as have the playoffs and the World Series. For the players, certainly they had to see it coming after all. Now, 34 days deep into their strike. But it's a strike they say they were really forced into by the owners. Orioles assistant player Representative Jim Poole says what the owners have done is nothing less than try to break the players union through non negotiation. I think their actions are, are showing that they, their words don't say it, but, I think their actions have led us to that conclusion. And as we have mentioned throughout the past week, this will be the first year since 1904 that no World Series will be played in Major League Baseball. 26 out of the 28 club owners agreed with the facsimile release, as it was drafted by Acting Commissioner Bud Selig. Two owners did not. Marge shot of the Cincinnati Reds and Peter Angelos of the Orioles are the two who refused to sign the agreement to cancel the rest of the season. A member of the Orioles staff told us this afternoon that Angelos wanted changing in the wording of the document, not necessarily the spirit of it. As for the strike, a member of the O's front office spoke with us this afternoon about healing the wounds which have doubtless been created by the strike shortened season. Baseball is still a wonderful game, and Oriole Park is still a wonderful place for the community to get together. And I think that the disappointment people feel is a wound, and it may take a while for wounds to heal. And that's fully understandable, because all of us who work for the Orioles are the biggest fans there are, and we're hurt. So you hope that that time heals that wound and the heart of an Orioles baseball that reaches out to each of us and that we love is still going to make us love it, you know, in the future, as Charles Steinberg of the Orioles, who never dreamed he would get this much airtime on channel 13.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136395/file/252983#t=119.65,218.0"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136395/file/252983/transcript/71259/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But, now the next hurdle is, of course, can they get this thing settled? Can they get these two sides back talking before spring training, middle of February on the issue, and there is no hammer left. The players have zero leverage now. They've watched the season. Their next point of leverage is the start of spring training. But as you said, for the owners and the players wouldn't wouldn't it be for their to benefit both of them if they got together now? Settle it now so that 95 is a given. And couldn't you have said the same thing one year ago? But the history of labor relations in this country, not just in sports, has been 11th hour negotiations. And in this case, it appeared that both sides came to the table with their minds already made up. And I don't see much to indicate that their minds have changed financially. The players are the bigger losers, right? They're both into hundreds of millions of dollars and unions. Yes, the players are the bigger losers because most of them are not as wealthy as the owners. But you have some owners which are carrying enormous debt services, one of whom is downtown, who really want to start putting the meat back in the seat, because every day that they miss the pay day, that debt service continues to accumulate. We suspect there may have been two others involved as well, but one of them was armed. He he started to take his weapon out, saying that he had an armed individual approached him in the dark. And about that time, he felt what he thought was a weapon in the back, as is being reported right now. He was able to to move quickly. Thank you both for being with us today. We really appreciate it. To begin with, Miss Langer. You are a breast cancer survivor. I would like to think that you're one of many, many women, a growing number of women who are surviving breast cancer.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136395/file/252983#t=1524.91,1628.95"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136395/file/252983/transcript/71259/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Is that the case, Deborah? Yes it is. There are about 1.6 million breast cancer survivors alive today in the United States. And a message that we want to bring to your viewers today is that breast cancer can be treated most successfully when it's found early, that the three part early detection program of screening mammography, clinical breast exams, and breast self-exam is necessary for every woman, and every woman needs to have access to these programs. And Mrs. Langer, obviously, one of the keys to to increasing the number of women who do survive breast cancer is funding research. How are we doing on that front? We're doing much better, Deborah, than we were, thanks to the efforts of women all around the country who have been pushing for more breast cancer research funding at the National Cancer Institute and more programs everywhere. But although research is exciting and important, often discoveries are far away. Even the breast cancer gene, which has hit the news recently, won't be translated into a test for quite some time. What concerns us is that women aren't getting access to services that are available to them right now, and we need to help them do that. Miss Avon has started a breast cancer awareness crusade. I would assume that that is one of its aims. Tell me about the programs that you're supporting. The programs that we're supporting bring breast cancer education and access to early detection services to women across the country, but specifically to women who are unreached by traditional medical services. And those women really are the ones that we're targeting very, very importantly, through partnerships with the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations and the YWCA of the USA, our two national partners. In his commentary tonight, Michael also asked what went wrong in the Bentleigh campaign for upset victories over an overconfident foe. We haven't seen the likes of this since the Jets knocked off the Colts in Super Bowl three. Ellen celebrated. Should feel terrific about beating Helen Bentley, but if she thinks that she won by talking about the issues, she's deluding herself. She won because Helen Bentley lost it. Bentley lost because she never campaigned, and she didn't campaign because she never in her wildest nightmare imagined she could lose. She was so busy conserving money and energy for the general election that she simply stood still. Well, celebrate danced past. It's traditional for winners to say they won on the issues. And that's what Ellen celebrates saying now. But her big item about cutting 24% in taxes isn't so much an issue as simply pushing people's emotional buttons. Everyone wants to cut taxes, but almost nobody thinks you can cut 24% over four years. So now, having pledged to do it, celebrate can try to explain exactly how. And she won't have a complacent opponent this time around. I'm Michael a lesser. Some coaches will do just about anything to get their proteges to succeed. The USS Eisenhower, with 1500 troops aboard, left its port at the Norfolk Naval Air Base this morning. Something that looks like we would hope that any police action in Haiti would be brief, that it would be multinational. That it would have a pre described set of goals and that it would have a timetable for conclusion. President Clinton will address the nation tomorrow evening to try to convince the American people that restoring democracy in Haiti is of vital interest to the US. Both, the president said. But the president says there's still time for Haiti's military leaders to leave on their own. All the sudden it opened up my eyes all the time. You might call this the remains of the day. Election day, that is. This year so many races were up for grabs that political signs sprouted up everywhere. Some folks chose one candidate to support. Others were more generous with their yard space.
