So as promised, Dr. Virginia Fulton, who is a doctor of nature, apathy, nature, apathy. We'll have to get an explanation of that. We're going to find out all about naturopathy and whatnot. But, you know, February is Black History Month. And as part of our celebration of Black History Month this week on CityLab, we visited what is fast becoming a Baltimore institution, the Great Black's and Wax Museum. Not far from the corner of Saratoga Street and Park Avenue in downtown Baltimore, is the world's first black wax museum. It's called Great Blacks and Wax, and it recaptures very important parts of American history. Over here, it's neck turning. Okay, great. Blacks and wax opened its doors seven months ago. The museum is a step back in time and a living tribute to 34 great people like Booker T Washington, Phillis Wheatley, W.E.B. Dubois, and Dr. George Washington Carver. The concept of the museum was developed by Dr. Elmer Martin and his wife, Joanne. I started out with an idea of teaching young black people, particularly what their history is all about, in hopes that the history was served as an inspiration for self-confidence. Higher stuff like Steam doing away with feelings of inferiority, just learning their place in history, and the contribution that they can make to this country and to the world. We thought maybe to present it in a visual form would somehow make more of an impact. So going to Spain and seeing that they preserved every aspect of their culture, same thing was true of France.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671#t=152.49,300.03"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671/transcript/47224/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And then seeing a wax museum and looking at the seeing how many tours went through and what an impact that had sort of brought the idea together. You know, starting a wax museum is no easy task. Once a location is selected, then the difficult job of selecting the wax figures and casting them requires weeks of work and planning. And of course, we can't forget that each figure costs no less than $2,000. People come into the museum all the time and asked us, Why don't you put someone so so someone so in the museum? And we would like to be able to make everybody happy with the figure that they were want in the museum. But when we tell them that figures run from 20 $500 to 40 $500, then they understand that this is going to be a slow, gradual process and eventually we're going to get there and eventually we're going to have many other figures that most people will want to see. Frederick Douglass, for example, with the hat, it had to be woven into his skin. And he was tall, too. That figure cost us 40 $500. If you had somebody like Muhammad Ali, well, you would have to have his torso exposed, his legs exposed. That figure could run as much as 8000 to $10000. You cannot start a wax museum with just two or three figures. You have to have at least 20 or 30 figures to start out with. And if you're talking about three figures time, $2,500 or to a $4,500, then that can be very expensive. A tour of the museum is like facing history. It's almost as if, you know the characters not only from the history books, but because they look so real to life.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671#t=300.84,411.98"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671/transcript/47224/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Like Nat Turner. But the basic principle of the museum will remain the same. We want them not only to leave the museum with some understanding of the outstanding contributions of some of the people, but to want to pursue black history further. They want to go to the library alone in more detail about a Harriet Tubman art alone, and more detail about a Frederick Douglass. We want to be a sort of a spark that will spare black people off in terms of learning more about the history and getting into deeper than they would get into it in our museum. You can find them in health, food stores, grocery stores, supermarkets, you know. Well, I tell them that they will live longer and give better service to their congregations and that congregation would be held healthier and have more money to put in the collection plate or pay dues with if they were healthy. By the way, how did you get started with all of this, the fasting and so forth, and become such a devotee of fasting? Well, you see, before I started this, I have been traveling many years as an evangelist in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. And, you know, when you are visit in town or your minister, your guest, people just get bigger and bigger. And I came down with ulcers. And when I came down from ulcers, I learned from Dr. Garnett. And a vegetarian diet is the first time I'd really heard a vegetarian dad because I'd always eaten planning meat. So do you do you couple the two things, the fasting and the vegetarianism? Yes. Yes. No, I don't. For everyone. Yes, Dr. Fulton, My name is Eleanor Richardson, and I'm certainly interested in prolonging my lifespan and being as healthy as I possibly can. So I would like to get from you some pointers on how can one certainly start on a fasting and to stick to it. Good question. Well, I never do more than one day, two days fasting without supervision. But one thing you can't do without supervision is one day at a time. And I would suggest every week it would be better to fast one day every week than to go on a fast of some days at a time, not supervised. My experience has been that when I first for prolonged period after the fourth day, I developed a sore throat and sniffles and other signs of a cold. I'd like to know how that can be resolved and also what the benefits of a cold in the car. And I'm gonna hang up and listen to the answers to my question. Thank you for calling. Now, that is not a cold. That's about eliminating the mucus, the toxins and waste that you experience. A textbook case of it. Yes. Yes. But on the other hand, when you do that, it means that you didn't prepare that fast correctly. Fair should be done by preparation. You should cleanse the body, as I said before, with a laxative. And you can do that as many as five days in a row. But if you go and more than one or two days before you see a doctor or a nutritionist to supervise, you do that. Do it alone. You will call damage to your system if you do it. She also asked about the colonic colonic. Yes. But the colon, even that the caloric therapies you might have to. Well, what it is. Yes. My name is Michael Dorsey. And I'm Martha. And I don't eat meat. And my mom's want to know why I don't. And I want to know how I could keep my weight up. I'd be playing ball every day. And I want to know, how can I control, you know, without coming back after playing ball and some time I don't even eat and when I do fail too much. So you're going from one extreme to the other. Even when you're going from that extreme to the other, it's good to know how you get your protein. Yeah, I used soy beans. Well, that's good. If you eat soybean, other grain and nuts and seed and many can, you would need to grind up the nuts and make them into the form of a milk. Okay. Like, for instance, if you take almonds or whatever nut, grind them into a powder before you add water, and for one cup of nut you add three cups of water, then you add a teaspoon of vanilla and about two tablespoons full of honey and presto, that's the best milk you could drink. No. Is it toxic waste in the body? It causes that. Now, if you'd go on a cleansing, as I mentioned before, you would not have it. Dr. Alvin, you're Fulton is our guest, and she's talking about fasting and the benefits therein. But, Dr. Fulton, fasting is not really admired by the medical community in this country, is it? I mean, there are a lot of medics who are against fasting, aren't they? Well, they have against, I guess, our procedure. Every medical van in the country does fasted. But do you think putting on Abby is you not eating? Yes, that's true. I mean, why why are they against fasting? Well, they don't understand the procedure this way, you know, That's all it is.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671#t=1725.87,1917.23"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671/transcript/47224/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They fast. Everybody. Does it. Stop pushing pills, though. Does it? Does it cut down enough? Yes. It would cut off the energy and come a little bit. Yes, it would probably cut that on that. I guess the food manufacturers hate you, too. Don't they? Yes. Yes, it would cut on the economy. Right. Let's go to the phones. Okay. We're going to take another call from home. Your live on City Line. Hi. My partner is a newly diagnosed diabetic and I was wondering if he could serve one day a week safely. Yes, he could pass one day a week. And it would be best if he had a doctor to supervise him through the fence like we've had in Chicago when diabetics were fasted as much as three weeks a month and correct their weight. And also the diabetes. Remember this diabetics, unless they have supervised correctly at all, they will lose their sex and it's best for them to fast so they can keep their health and their love life. Well, speaking of sex and and loving longer, as I started out this show, how does fasting help in that area? Fasting, half the calls. It helps work. Have a nice, sweet disposition. Is that when you have a nice, sweet disposition, you look good. You feel good. You smell good. Because when you fasting, I've heard people say that people who fast or people who not non-meat that actually smell better, they do smell better because you see the best ones they'll see in your body. And long enough to have that waste buildup that we call it, how to tell us in body odor. Vegetarians don't have that. So they have a sweet disposition, personality, attitude, and they can smile with other people.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671#t=1918.25,2022.62"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671/transcript/47224/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay. We got a question from the audience. Yes, ma'am. Dr. Fulton, I would like to know, how does fasting affect the nutritional balance of foods such as how how do we compensate for meats? In other words, you know, is it is it a equal balance of the food groups? If you if you select the food right now, remember, no animal that we eat, eat, eat meat. They eat gray and grass, vegetables of the trees of the plant. This is what they eat, the cows, the pigs, they do eat meat. And so if we ate the vegetables and and ate enough beans, peas and grain and soy bean is high in protein, then any medias. And so if we knew how to select our food and supervise and select our food correctly, we would have what we need from the food. You know, it's interesting that you should say supervise, because I have known some people who have been vegetarians and who fasted quite often and they've really run into some physical problems. They've had problems with their teeth. Yes. And with some other parts of the body. So it it can be dangerous, can't it? It can be unless one is supervised. That's why I said if persons go fast more than one day a time, don't do it unless you have a doctor, someone who experience at this to supervise you, unless you got somebody taking a look at you the whole time. Yes. You must be supervised every day when you go to the phones again. Hi. CALLER your live on City Line. Yes. You said we going to play a game. We will just drink this juice all day. We go and drink a cup of tea. You have not been drinking tea all along, but you got to drink a cup of tea with mom and dad. We go have this game. We're going to play this game all day long. We just go drink this tea. And then the child will say, Monday, whatever day is our game day. Then we play games when we eat and then get used to it one day at a time. Dr. Fulton An awful lot of hungry people in the world, I guess just in the back of my mind is we've done shows on on hunger in Baltimore, hunger in the world. I mean, I don't know how you equate hunger and the fact that people can't afford to buy food with with fasting. I mean, yes, that is true. But you see, there's more plants and roots and the earth that would be food. Also, if people knew how to gather this and use it, I guess maybe there's a way in which we can translate that. This way you could translate. You see, man place a fruit roots, herbs back and berries, both of the trees. Unfortunately, we are out of time. Don't forget the session that'll be held in Washington in March. We'll be back in a moment with t months here in the news. Topping today's news cap, a celebration of sorts. One of America's oldest civil rights organizations is 75 years old today. That's the NAACP last night at Coppin State College. The local chapter held its 75th Diamond Jubilee celebration and awards program. Among its honorees was the newly elected national ACP president, Mrs. Enola McMillan. But what is the ACP involved in today? Well, here in Baltimore, they've undertaken a most ambitious task. They're calling for a boycott of the Baltimore Sun Papers. Why? Because they strongly object to a recent series of Sun newspaper articles that dealt with the plight of low income black families headed by single women. This morning, I spoke with Dr. Samuel Banks and Reverend Mamie Williams to members of the NAACP Community Involvement Committee to get a better understanding of what bothered the most about the articles.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671#t=2221.58,2473.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671/transcript/47224/annotation/18","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The articles really are trivial and really irrelevant. They represent a precipitating factor in terms of systemic concerns. We have six demands that are before the Sun paper and they include one the inclusion of six blocks immediately by March 24 in management editorial and correspondent position. So the establishment of a newspaper south of the Sahara where most backbone covering the selection of blogs is offered book review editors. And there are others that flow in that vein. And you're saying that the readership of the Sun would precipitate having a bureau in the Sahara and some of the demands of the black readership of Africa? To some extent, those top level positions, management, editorial correspondent positions, perhaps less than one half of 1%, we find that scandalous. I think it's an affront to this community, black and white, and they're calling for the total community to cancel the subscription to the Sun Papers and to support the local branch and ACP and our struggle for economic justice. So what started out as a reaction to an article, series of articles written by The Sun has precipitated or turned in to blossomed into something larger than that. We want to include blacks in upper level management in other positions within the Sun Papers. Reverend Williams, you're part of the ACP committee that Dr. Banks to spearhead of calling for the boycott of the Sun Papers. What was your initial reaction to the articles? Did you in fact define it derogatory? My initial reaction is that there is a crisis, but it does not need to be put in the paper as it was reported. As it was, it was too one sided. And because it was one sided, it did not give a full view of the crisis as is.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671#t=2475.56,2579.0"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/103611/file/203671/transcript/47224/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But the articles, as Dr. Banks is his served as a catalyst for the systemic racism that is inherent in most of our corporate institutions. And we're calling for churches and fraternities and other organizations to boycott with us this Saturday, February 19th, as well as Sunday. We are calling these sunless days and there's a need for not only blacks but the entire community to rise up and say justice and economic parity. Now, you have had two boycotts thus far of boycotts take place on Saturday. Picketing, picketing. Have you met with Sun Management? Yes, we met twice and the meetings were fruitless and failed by Mr. Manfred, the publisher, but clearly in generalities. If we can only find a qualified black, we are trying and we say that that is unmitigated nonsense and totally unacceptable. And as Reverend Williams said, we are saying to our reviewer, join us in our struggle for economic justice and cancel your subscription today so that we can bring economic justice to Sun paper. And what would it take to satisfy your demands? I know there's room for compromise. You're calling for some things that the sun probably does not have an initial drawing board, but things that they will think about. Like you're calling for a news bureau south of the Sahara most black folk live. Where does room for compromise come in and when do you think your actions you're calling for the picketing and boycotting of the sun? When will that stop? When we have economic justice, the six demands that be made elemental just a matter of simple justice. And any fair minded person in this community, black or white, would want to see. I believe that process to go forward.
