In July of 1976, the Academy broke a century old tradition and brought aboard the first women midshipman to train at this prestigious leadership school. Jane and James. All 4400 midshipmen face the same rigorous physical, academic and professional training training that could defeat even the most promising of the. I mean, this woman, 22 year old Elizabeth Belzer, earned the plum of being the first female officer to graduate from this class, graduating 30th, the only woman in the top 10%. At her home just before graduation. I met Liz and her family, talking with her about being first and what her life was like at the Naval Academy. I've always been vocal and done things a little bit different than other people. I'm just a woman that wants to do something, so I do it. When I first applied for college, I needed a scholarship and my family didn't have the money to send me to college. And so I applied for all different kinds of scholarships and I applied for that all the different Armed Services ROTC programs. I had gone to a briefing at my high school before they let women in, and at that time I didn't know anything really about the Naval Academy. And they said, I'm sorry, we don't like women. And I was like, Really? I didn't know. A broken tradition is a sure fire media event, and four years ago, just out of high school, these young women inductees didn't realize what the publicity would mean. I think that probably made it harder than it would have otherwise been. We, in a way, fought to be treated and to have people react to us the same and say, you're a midshipman.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114026/file/216764#t=118.23,251.66"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114026/file/216764/transcript/61557/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Period. And because the media was so present and obviously was pointed at the women in particular, it made it difficult for especially the males to say, yeah, they're the same because we weren't. How did your mother react? My mom was really behind me for the whole thing. Absolutely. Yes. I worried about her many times. There would be phone calls and tears and yeah, I worried about her. Do you ever want to just take her out of there? No. Never. She had said she wanted to come. She could come. I think the day that I went there, I knew that I wouldn't quit and I couldn't quit. I was like, I committed myself to this. And so I had to go through with the whole thing being committed and working hard. Right. Historic honors for Liz. She is the academy's first woman Trident scholar and also the first woman to hold the position of regimental commander during Cleeves Summer. You are in charge of running the Blade Regiment. It's an enjoyable job because you're not doing the academic part of it. You can devote all of your time to practicing leadership. During all the formations, I had to go on the command. Ability to do everything and having that never been done at school before, the difference between a man and a woman's voice is very marked. And it was real important to me that it come out like a command and not like a scream or something like that. March. What was the toughest part for you? Personal relations was hard. As for me, I've always been a very people oriented person, and when people reacted to me not as me but as a woman in a negative way, that was real difficult for me.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114026/file/216764#t=252.32,364.7"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114026/file/216764/transcript/61557/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"For me, it was like, hey, let me let me talk to you and I'll show you who I am and you'll like me. I'm an okay person. I won't do anything to you. Did that work? That added sometimes. Sometimes. And that was really great. It really meant a lot to me when that happened. But there were other times when it just didn't happen. But whenever you do something different, you're going to have attitudes that don't go with yours. And you know, you just live with that and try to get to whoever you can. Another first at this already special occasion was Liz's marriage in the Naval Academy chapel to a former Naval Academy grad, Ensign John Simkin. All this excitement made an emotional time even more special. Liz, what are your emotions now? Getting married, graduating from the Naval Academy with the whole world opening up for you? How do you feel? You're on the verge of tears a lot. And because everything is going on and all that, all the great things that I've been looking forward to for such a long time are going to happen in such a short period of time. I'm trying to savor each moment, but each moment so busy that it's really difficult to do that. And so, like I say, I'm on the verge of tears a lot of the time. But I'm really, really happy about everything that's happening in my life. And I can't thank God enough for all that he's done for me, cause he's just been, you know, it's been great. So be the first time you've been away from home. Really? When you move out to California, you miss your family, I'm sure. Well, congratulations and good luck to you.
