If I were just Mary had a little lamb just so all. Mary. Hello. I have no more. Mary had a little lamb. All right. So you are the man they call Murdoch? Yes, I am. They say the more they spell Murdoch for me, you are the Aussie King. And your first name? John. No one. There should be. You're from around this area, aren't you? Want to raise an Ebola outbreak in 600 block of East Madison Street? Well, you sure haven't gone too far from home, have you? Well, I graduated from University of Vermont. I went to Fairmont Hill for a while. Then I went down the mall at night to get my extra credits. I was there for two years. Then I went on CCP, got a university Baltimore, see my master's degree. So you got a bachelor's degree? That's me. The Recreation Administration worked on my master's and for Zaire. Now you you work for Department of Recreation. I work for the City Human Services Agency, which is housing. Community Development used to be community action agency, Urban Services and Human Services. And I've been on the job for 30 years. And then your main job, of course, is working with youngsters. Well, yes, working with youngsters all the way 100%. Everyone from mayor, small town back. We still have the youth programs. I have the day. But it's just the mayor, not only him, but a lot of other people in the background. But my heart goes out to him because he's been mostly in my bedroom behind me. And then there's been whole nine staff staff. He had school 1 or 2. They remind me, everybody, people in the community, you know, we get it as a team, not me.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136822/file/253834#t=7.08,115.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136822/file/253834/transcript/71687/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But from what I could hear is you're the backbone of the mayor. No, I'm not going to agree with that. The mayor in my background, I have. But you sure have been doing a lot of good work in the community helping these youngsters stay on the right track. Well, let's put it this way. I shouldn't take the credit for it. Should go to the people. If it one for people like the mayor had hers and this whole nine staff hub, the human services staff at 23rd and the people in the community, it wouldn't be I'm just for baseball. Me Yeah, but I talk to all these people. Murdock And they say it's you doing all the good work for them. Put it this way being honest with myself, I'm being straight up with anybody. I don't take credit for what I'm doing. You know, like when we go on trips and stuff, we have sponsors, but I have to hear some of my money to wait and make it balance out, right? So we take our trips. We said, you go to Philadelphia next weekend, then the following two weeks from there, they're going to Boston for a tournament. Like for the last 30 years, you would trying to get to Disney World. That's true. And every time you get enough money in the bank, they go, something comes up here, you and you spend it on what you're doing here. Well, basically, because this death has been making let me make a long story short for people on the inside to pass out our kids, they have got to learn that they can do things beyond just sports, education, welfare, health, the most valuable thing in life. Right. I must put it down. And do you think you're ever going to get to Disney World? Well, put it this way. I'll try. I won't do there. Maybe we ought to start a John Murdoch Disney World. No, no, no, no. I know from nobody. I'm not up for money, but I think we need to look at reality. The city itself, we have a pretty good idea. I'm going to say this much straight up. I think city people and city administration are trying to bring about a change with the youth. We as Americans and we as citizens of Baltimore have to take a stand and try to correct and turn the kids around the right way. You, me, news me. We can't do it all. It seems as though those people who want to do it are not really coming forward doing what they should be. Don't say that. We've got kids, I guess, doing things, but they're not getting the credit for it if some kids do something wrong. Big thing in news. But what about those people that's working with those kids, such as people in other programs that's helping kids, giving up their time, trying to get them motivated and keep out of trouble? We should help the kids. But you and people like you are putting your money where your mouth is. You're out there helping the kids. Well, not only am I out there, but I'll be honest with you, I'll be out on the street at night, my home visits, I'll come out on the weekend and go around, check on them, see what they don't want. Our frustration, right? They're not doing something right. I'll go to the school. If somebody refer a child to me, they need some assistance. A polite young man, a young lady and a counselor. Try to find jobs, give them back to school. We try to help in all areas if it's possible. But you're a power of example for these youngsters. I wouldn't consider myself unlike Charles Barkley. Don't follow me. My goal. The angle. I'll try. I help you. I tell my young men that I'm going to police officers. I take one friend, Sam Adeyemi. He's a detective with the Barbara County Police Department. Always tell Sam he's still in the Mafia. Always chosen. Set your own destiny what you want to be. But if you're going to be the best, be the best at what you do. But you need your education, even on the high school years counts and become accountable for every couple of young men that have gone on to become correctional officers. Those are probably that. Right. But they did hear the message. They get the message all the time. And when they see you, they say, hey, Murdock, how you doing? They do that. But the whole thing in nutshell, they come back. The old ones come here right up on the pictures, up on the wall. There's some of the young men up there for what's waiting for me. I got four for the fathers were my kids. So those kids are. You were helping ten, 12 years ago. Some of those have youngsters here in the school. Yes, they do. Involved in the community in my program, too. What's next for Murdock? Well, let me put it this way. Everybody asks me a question. All right. I would like to become a high school coach in basketball someday. I offered twice and I left that. I did. Thank you. Because I think I was right. I made a commitment to the kids in the community that we had a program, one, I couldn't abandon that Right now I think I just hang into what I'm doing with that band. But if a high school coach job comes open when I take it, it reminds me of questioning. If I have, I can't answer yet. What high school would you like to go to work for? Anyone in particular? My my main concern is that they what they want to do in life. I'll sit down with them. We talk. We have no post on meetings about anything. My main goal is to make sure they have a poor, clean life they don't have problems around. I try to tell them there are going to be problems, but you gotta learn to think as they focus on what you want to do. Just like with Brian Smith, Brian White. I taught in a jail. I'll tell my ballplayers any more. I want you guys number one, you got a choice. You want to service, you want to apprenticeship program, go to college or you try and employ. Well, I try to push them in the right guy. Every child is not going to be a professional football, professional basketball, professional soccer player. There's other sports they can go into. I tell you, look at tennis across gymnastics as a way of getting a scholarship. But once you get in there, you got to maintain that. You point the 3.0. Now, when you were when you were young, you knew you were born raised here in East Baltimore by my grandma and grandpa. What did you want to be when you grew up? Well, I mean, that is a good back then to take my hand down during my time when I was coming up on grandma and grandpa, when I was raising me and I was very close to my grandma grandpa. I play a lot of soap or play some baseball were playing or football, but one person when I got out of high school and I went to the community college in Baltimore, I ran into this one man who was basketball coach up there at that time, that guy who was the athletic director. You certainly got experience. You're ready? Yeah, I'm ready. But I'm asking a question. Is people ready for me? I don't know what you're out to find out for yourself and deal with it. But again, hey, we had to do a job. And the most pain in my life was seeing kids make it. But when you lose a couple of ballplayers, you know that I would. You bet. We went to Russia back in 1984. I took basketball team to Russia. It was Mike Moore. John, say, how many of our kids have you guys break out over in Russia? We won four games and lost one. That's pretty good. That's pretty darn good for a young man that went over there. And it was they were gone. We were all kind of paranormal. We first went over there, go with an air for about 9 or 10 hours.
