It's been beautiful here all day. But as Tim Williams reports from Ocean City, an unexpected visitor named Earl put a damper on early fun. With daybreak came the commute. And travelers, many of them headed to the beach. But in Ocean City, the last splash of summer was becoming just that, where you'd expect to see sun and surf. It should be a lot of people here at the beach this weekend. Coming up, the last big hurrah. I don't know. I don't think it's going to be a lot. I think we're going to have a lot of turnout. I feel disappointed. A little, yeah, because I thought it would be a big Labor Day. Although no one can predict how weather will affect business on this last full weekend of summer. Business owners just ride the wave and they hope that when vacationers can't have fun outside, they'll move inside to spend their dough. If it stays are relative decent temperature, you know, even if there is a fine rain, we'll still be halfway busy. People walk around, they got to eat. Everything's tied up for my 97. Moving along the eastbound side of 50. Getting to the seven river once you get to the Bay Bridge is really not that bad. I figure look a little bit closer. And we'll probably do the same thing for Labor Day because Labor Day is about as big a volume as Memorial Day. So we'll be crushed. Big volume indeed. In fact, one supermarket market we visited expects to sell about 300 pounds of potato salad this weekend alone. And of course, don't forget that ammonium stay fair in your weekend plans. The fair runs through Labor Day. And tomorrow you can check out Sky Chopper 13 at the fair all day long. It will be parked just outside the north gate entrance. So. All right, Bob, thanks a lot. We have breaking news out of Harford County. Right now, fire crews are at the house or at a house fire in Edgewood. Two people have been flown to shock trauma from a home in the 800 block of fisherman Lane. Eyewitness news crews are on the way and we'll bring you a live update as soon as we can. Some people in Elk Ridge may not be celebrating this Labor Day weekend after being evacuated from their homes because of explosive gas. Suzanne Collins tells us how they're coping with the problem just days after it was discovered. An electrical engineer, was in the Hartwick family's basement, sealing off the sump pump to prevent more gas from coming in. And the house was aired out. This process is usually done for radon. But here it's believed to be explosive methane gas. Homeowners did not know this development was built atop a landfill. Ryan Homes, the builder, said in a public meeting last night it believed it to be a, quote, recovered quarry. I actually went down to let the dog out about 8:00 Wednesday morning and smelled something at the landing. I opened the door and it was pretty, pretty powerful. Bob Hartwick first discovered the problem. His new home had the highest level of explosive gas. Three families, including his, have been evacuated indefinitely. Ryan Homes has agreed to pay for temporary housing, and they offered to install gas mitigation systems in the three homes showing dangerous levels, as well as a fourth that sits right between. They will put gas alarms in additional homes. They've actually had the electricians out to run the wiring for the extra outlets, and they're waiting on the delivery of the sensors. And they will be installed in all 18 houses in Calvert Ridge.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136720/file/253430#t=378.71,479.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136720/file/253430/transcript/71556/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Some homeowners say that's a first step but aren't sure it's enough to detect danger. The ones who already have dangerous levels of gas have contacted a lawyer and don't know what the future will bring. My concern is I don't really know what is under this land. And until somebody can give me a definite and tell me whether it can be removed or if it can't be removed, I'm going to have to weigh all the facts before I decide whether to move my family back in or not. Another developer altogether is preparing these lots for new construction, and it happens to be located right next to Calvert Ridge and abuts the homes that have a gas problem. Apparently some people have invested in these lots and are now very concerned about their purchase. Suzanne Collins, WJC, Jay-Z, Eyewitness News. Police say when they responded to the suicide call, they found the mother lying outside while her three boys and three girls lie dead inside the home. Sources say they were strangled, but police won't confirm that. They believe it is a case of domestic violence. That's what police and prosecutors announced today as they dropped the murder case against the seven and eight year old boys. But today in Ireland, the president gave in and uttered the two little words he's avoided so far in connection with the Monica Lewinsky affair. Reporter John King was there. For the first time, the president said flatly the words so many have been waiting to hear about his relationship with former white house intern Monica lewinsky. I am sorry. Dogged overseas by his domestic political crisis. A subdued Mr. Clinton says it's hard to take issue with the growing chorus of criticism back home, much of it now from fellow Democrats. I made a bad mistake. It was indefensible and I'm sorry about it. Top aides describe the president as angry that critics in his own party didn't at least hold their fire until he was back in the United States. I just don't want to comment on that. I shouldn't be commenting on that while I'm on this trip. The criticism back home is in striking contrast to the hero's welcome for the president in Ireland. He is celebrated as a statesman here for his lead role in brokering the Northern Ireland peace agreement. But the president's team is now bracing for a domino effect as Democrats across the United States are asked to respond to Mr. Clinton's latest explanation of the Lewinsky scandal. The president shrugged and declined comment when asked whether he should be censured or otherwise punished by the Congress. It's a question sure to be raised again back home. John King, CNN, Dublin. Don't try to get through and hurry up. Several organizations, including Baltimore County Police and the Maryland State Police, announced a campaign aimed at preventing drivers from running red lights. You can prevent red light running crashes by observing traffic signals, driving at the proper speed, slowing at yellow lights and being aware of other traffic and pedestrians. If not, this can occur. And tonight's Health Watch, according to the Centers for Disease Control, for every 100,000 live births in the United States, 7 to 8 women die. Those statistics haven't changed since 1982. The World Health Organization estimates that at least 20 other countries have maternal death rates lower than that. Say the U.S. is a member of the fastest growing age group today. People 100 and older. Besides being a growing phenomenon, centenarians also bring new challenges to medicine. Physicians have to consider serious issues when dealing with members of the very old, such as whether the treatment will help, whether it will prolong life. And possibly the most important issue when surgery is involved is whether someone older than 100 will survive the operation. Now, some avoid these questions altogether and just say, hey, 100 years old, forget about it. Not worth even trying to answer those and other questions. Researchers studied the survival rate of 31 men and women centenarians who underwent a variety of surgical procedures during the past several years. To the surprise of many. They discovered that the surgically treated 100 year olds had the same rate of mortality at 48 hours, 30 days and a year after the surgery, as one year olds who did not undergo an operation. The obvious conclusion is that physicians should not dissuade centenarians from undergoing surgery simply because they think their advanced age would put them at greater risk. The greater risk may be doing nothing at all. I'm Dr. DiNardo, and this doesn't mean that people over 100 are good candidates for organ transplants and traumatic procedures like that. But there are other alternatives. Absolutely. There are plenty of other corrective procedures out there that may be worth trying if the patient needs them. Face care. We have an update on the breaking story we told you about earlier in this newscast. Two people are injured in a house fire in Edgewood. Dennis Edwards is live at the home on Fisherman Lane. Dennis, what can you tell us? Well, Sally, the call came out around 4:00 this afternoon when firefighters arrived here at 801 Fisherman Lane. They found the house you see here behind me, totally engulfed in flames. Before they arrived. A couple of the of the sheriff's deputies in this area had broken into the house and rescued an elderly couple. The two people involved were flown out of here by medevac. They were suffering from severe inhalation burns. Those are internal burns caused by smoke inhalation. They are in critical condition and they were taken to the hyperbaric chamber at short trauma. We're told the fire began somewhere around the back of the building near the laundry room. Firefighters out here right now, they've got things under control and they're trying right now, Sally, to figure out exactly what caused this. Right now, we don't know the condition of the couple, but we were told they were taken from the scene or taken from the building unconscious. Well, Denise, all three families evacuated this week have a number of children and they're still trying to figure out where to stay. And the builder Ryan Homes has now offered to help in several ways. Finally, the problem of having built on a landfill is being investigated. Polls will be board next week to see what decaying matter lies below. Ms. Utility was called in to mark off places to avoid. The builder had a radon expert in the basement of several homes that had explosive readings of what's believed to be methane gas. We moved into the house two months ago. We have a 14 month old little boy and we just had a little baby girl three weeks ago. And you're out of your house? Yeah, we're out of the house. And right now my family's at the beach. I sent them down there. My wife's pretty traumatized. Bob Hartwick had the home with a 100% gas level. The fire department has said a reading of just 5% is unsafe. Hartwick and another neighbor hired a lawyer to assess their legal options. It depends, of course, on exactly what the damage is, whether it can be remediated. What the Ryan Homes and anyone else knew at the time. There are new home warranty statutes in Maryland which apply to the sales of new homes. Ryan Homes said at a public meeting last night it knew the homes were built on a, quote, recovered quarry. But was it a private landfill where all sorts of things were accepted? And why didn't the homeowners know? You know, you spend this kind of money, you just hope that you have a great house. They will also install alarms in homes nearby. Not seeing a problem at this point. Meanwhile, another developer continues to excavate a site for new homes right next door where people say the landfill extended. We're very happy here. And to have to think about addressing this problem and answering the question, do do we stay here? Can we stay here? Can we leave? Knowing the values of the homes and the questions that this is all bringing up? That's very disturbing to us. These so called gas mitigation repairs are not something that resolve the problem once and for all. Dennis. They're like an ongoing maintenance system for an unending explosive gas problem. In other words, the fan would have to constantly run for years venting gases outside and the alarm always be on working to be sure that system doesn't fail. That would be hard to live with, explained Suzanne. How is this different from radon gas? Lots of homes have radon gas problems. They do. And radon can cause cancer if breathed in long term. But here we have a problem of an explosion, a big boom, and the fans and sump pumps used have to be specially made to be spark free. All right. Thank you, Suzanne. And eyewitnesses, we'll continue to follow this story as tests determine what lies below the endangered homes. And as for the families involved, this will be a tough weekend. Imagine the terror of passengers on a Royal Airlines flight this morning when their plane made an emergency landing with smoke in the cockpit. The plane was forced to land in Newfoundland just 36 hours after the Swissair jetliner crashed off Nova Scotia, killing all 229 people on board. I was just really frightened. I just thought that was it. That was the end. The proximity of the area where it landed and the same problem. It's just I thought, this can't be happening really fast. Today's disaster, it was foremost in everybody's mind, so it made it a little more scary. I think the Royal Airlines plane was a Boeing 757 bound from Canada to Scotland. In this instance, the emergency landing was a success and all the passengers are safe. Well, not so, of course, in Nova Scotia, where the underwater search for the Swissair black box has begun. Tents have been set up so that family members can grieve in private while watching the search. Officials shifted the massive rescue operation to a search and recovery mission, bringing in a Canadian submarine to help locate the plane's flight recorders, the so-called black boxes. We didn't get a positive result from the submarine in terms of finding the black box. I don't believe yet there's any indication where people can say they think it's here. Despite the fact that thousands of small pieces of debris are scattered over roughly 70mi² of ocean, officials believe large parts of the McDonnell Douglas, MD 11th May still be intact on the ocean floor. There were approximately 75 articles, and all that says is that they had a wallet or passport or luggage. But that only indicates that those aspects were on the flight. But we are able to confirm that and match that with the passenger manifest as part of a databank trying to pull the identity of these of the passengers together. Last year, federal aviation officials warned airlines about a wiring problem in the cockpit of MDA 11 planes that could cause a fire, making it difficult to fly the aircraft. What you saw were the remnants of a tropical storm Earl made for a gray, rainy day that kept most beachgoers away from the beach. We have a place over in a beach and, you know, eat. Drink and live and stay inside. Yes, stay inside. But it's really it's really miserable. It's a little damp right now, but we've had fun. The boardwalk showed signs of life, but business started off slow. Still, many refused to let Earl dampen their spirits. This weekend will be the. The last one. So we'll see if it'll all come together. There's been a lot of people here at the beach this weekend. Coming up, the last big hurrah. I don't know. I don't think it's going to be a lot like we're going to have a lot of turnout.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136720/file/253430#t=4253.36,4346.02"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136720/file/253430/transcript/71556/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Disappointed? If it stays relatively decent temperature, you know, even if there is a fine rain, we'll still be halfway busy. People walk around, they got to eat. For now, only regulars hope the bad weather will blow over and the crowd will pick up before the weekend flies by. In Ocean City, Tim Williams W Jay Z Eyewitness News. The president was in the Irish Republic this morning and he reluctantly gave in to the demands that he say those two little words about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky and the fact that he lied to the nation about it. The Ravens will open the doors of their new ballpark and begin to hold their breath. A new lease locks them into Baltimore for 30 years, but does it lock them into people's hearts the way it once happened with a team called the Colts? Nobody knows. Baltimore fans waited 12 years for a team to replace the Colts, and now they've waited two years not only for the new ballpark, but for a semblance of on field respectability. For a long time, the National Football League denied this was a good football town. They remembered Robert Irsay and forgot about all the old consecutive sellouts at Memorial Stadium, the old outdoor insane asylum. This Sunday, we begin to find out how much of the old fire is there. In many ways, it's a new generation embracing the Ravens. Young people who remember the Colts only in their dying days if they have a fraction of the fun we had long ago on 33rd Street. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship. I'm Michael, Alaska. Thank you, Michael. The celebration has already begun. An open house allowed fans to mill through the stands and the concourse munch on stadium food and imagine all the football seasons to come. You could say the place was filled with admirers. It's kind of plain on the outside, but it's nice inside. It's kind of cozy. I like the purple seats. It's huge. Absolutely huge. This new facility, of course, replaces Memorial Stadium, which lives on in the memories of those who grew up watching football there. But now it's time to make new memories and fans seem ready to do it. It just takes time. The next generation will come up and they don't even know about the Colts. This is the Ravens home. The big key for the Ravens on Sunday, making sure this guy doesn't go wild. You have to stop Jerome Bettis. He's a guy who can really run the ball. The offensive line really does a good job of cutting off defenses and he does a good job of seeing where the cut backs are and making them cut back. So Jerome's a big guy. You got to go and put people on him. You can't arm tackle. So he's a definite threat. It's tough to stop the bus, but I mean, I mean, as I was saying earlier, but everyone has to do their job and everyone has to be disciplined to the responsibility. If we do that, I mean, I think we can stop. Well, where are the Ravens listed as three point underdogs for the regular season opener on Sunday and live coverage from Donovan Field beginning at 1130 on Sunday morning with the pre-game show running all the way through the game itself into our live postgame show. And so if you can't be on the scene on Sunday, you can see it on the screen on Channel 13. And now, ladies and gentlemen, as we prepare to turn the page and begin a new chapter in Baltimore sports history. Ladies and gentlemen, Eyewitness Sports is proud to present a gentleman who represents the very best of what professional sports can be and what we as a nation can one day hope to be. He is the very embodiment of the American dream. He is a pro football Hall of Famer and living legend. This is our third. What? What? How are you? Fine, I'm fine. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. What do you think of the Ravens this year? All right. And the other teams that I play against, there's still the money, the quarterbacks. Believe me, they've got about five great quarterbacks in the league. Everybody else is faking it. Well, see, I know they're stealing money, but as long as the owners want to pay them more power to these guys.
