But most of them aren't as good as Jimmy Epsilon is from South Baltimore. Like most 14 year old kids, he's kind of shy. But when he gets on a skateboard, he feels very confident. Recently evening went with Jimmy up Salinas to the first annual Baltimore Metropolitan Skateboard Competition. Give me your breakfast. Ready for my. Well, that's not. It is day to day. No, you're right. Yeah. So you know, what time is it? It's almost 930 now. More than now. Yeah, well, they don't take that long to get up there. Our skateboard superhero is still a schoolboy, and this Saturday morning is similar to many others. Except for an air of anticipation that even his parents feel. Anyway, Jim, how many of you know hosting this contest today? 150. 52. Memorial Stadium. Yeah. Nice room. I don't really expect a rate high, but, you know, I'm gonna try. I was one of the first people to get a skateboarder in here. I know it seemed like a lot of fun, and a lot of people are starting to get them. Apply to magazines. Learn some tricks out of magazines. And basically just taught myself. I decide to get in tricks because like, just riding around and all going up and down hills up was getting boring and like people in a magazine were doing tricks. So I said, why couldn't I haven't skateboard in about a year and a half now? Like when I'm riding it, I feel like, you know, I was pretty good. I spend about 3 to 5 hours every day on a skateboard when I get the chance. My star skateboarding is just doing the tricks, and I didn't really think about what my style was going to ride on the board.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136824/file/253836#t=12.16,142.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136824/file/253836/transcript/71672/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You jump up in the air and the board on there twirls around in circles and you lean back on ahead. When you walk the board back and forth, it's called a spacewalk. That's a hard choice. Everybody says it looks good. Well, skateboarding is you know, it's a lot of fun and it really gives you a thrill. It's like a fair sport, you know? Everything happens. Okay. I'm getting ready for a contest. I basically think about my routine because I think that's the most important part. See, when I won this competition at Riverside, you know, I felt pretty good knowing that I was one of the best around for my neighborhood. You go right now. I'll put it down on the back. Let's see what we have. To the Baltimore City Bureau of Recreation and on the city citywide skateboard contest for 1977. We are going to start. With both age groups working together 12 and under and the 13 to 17 and. They want to be safe when you're ride and just be sure you wear your equipment and not to go a step ahead of yourself. Make sure you aren't doing the tricks that you're capable of doing. And the sidebar certainly with me. Don't be afraid and try to score the right. It's to. Do the Texas circus do? Just try to take a sidebar with me. You got me by about when you first tried to shoot the. Hopscotch monitor pedestrians to jump up and down skate on. According to sidewalks. You've been with me. Doing the taxes every day. Just trying. So get your girl and get continue down the street. Just imagine. Giving him the same string Defender Club Review Board. Angus. Was. That's good to know. Well, Jimmy wasn't number one or even number two, but he did pretty well.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136824/file/253836#t=143.06,373.83"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136824/file/253836/transcript/71672/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He was number four. But to his parents and his best friend, Mike, he is still a superhero all the same. Hey, Jim. He did pretty good in that context. Yeah, it feels pretty good. Finishing fourth in the city, but, no, I didn't like finishing third to a girl. Yeah, well, it's. It's for sex isn't all. It really doesn't matter. Look at me for this guy. Once you get that guy. Same that got up cast full on. Was pretty bad. About a foot when a competition was coming up. Well, it's the brakes and let's. Let's go back in. It takes a whole lot of balance to stay on these things. Jimmy of Salinas practices about 3 to 5 hours a day. So those three people who came in ahead of them and better watch out next year. We'll be back for the evening departments in one minute. All right. Thank you, Robert. Well, tonight, a 14 year old West Baltimore boy is wearing our gold. 13. It's sort of a gold badge of courage to the young man with cerebral palsy who told me at the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital that he will walk again and play the organ in church, too, for much of his 14 years. Thomas Robinson has lived in hospitals from Florida to Maryland, undergoing operations to perhaps help him walk better. His favorite animal in the whole world, the Oriole Bird, who showed up to be part of Tommy's special salute. Tommy's been at the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital since December, recuperating from his latest operation, which was done at Johns Hopkins. So many operations on hospitals, but Tommy never gets down. There's always that big smile. Thomas is a very special patient. He doesn't he have four operations already and he doesn't have any complaints here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136824/file/253836#t=374.19,489.99"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136824/file/253836/transcript/71672/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"He's a good boy and he has had a rough time. But you never see Tommy when he doesn't have a smile. That's the love that keeps coming out. Before he had this operation, no matter how he would walk, he cared for you. No matter what you asked him to do. He was right there to do it for you. Yes. Tommy may have cerebral palsy, and there may even be more operations ahead. But his mom and all of his friends know that Tommy's optimism will always be there. I like the hospital. Don't. Don't bad. It mattered to me this. Well, even when I had to be done, it had to be done. Don't bother me. There's hope. I can walk for good. I know I will. Tommy, you are indeed a courageous young man. And on behalf of all of us at Channel 13 and for all your friends here on the staff and the other patients at the Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital, I pin the Gold 13 on you. And congratulations. You're an inspiration to a lot of people. Thank you. And now the oil bird has something to do. Here we go. Hey. Hey. Yeah? Yeah. Why? If you know someone who deserves a 13 salute like Tommy Wright and tell us all about that person, please send your letters to 13. Salute WJC TV. Television. Hill. Baltimore, Maryland.
