People tell us that we write pretty sex, which pleases us because we try. And these people, these same people, are the ones that buy our books and then pass the word by mouth and buy them for their mother or whoever, you know. So they are what we're all about. We write what we love to write about. We write what we love to read about, and it's just not a conscious thing. Okay. Take me back in time. How did it all start? Mary and I were freelance market researchers, and we both pulled this job for cleaning drains with a pressurized drain cleaner. And I knew who she was because we were to meet at this house. That was the starting point. I didn't have any yellow bucket. Right. And one way or another, we ended up blowing up this lady's bathroom. The tiles came off the wall. Getaway to eastern Maryland and a visit to a wonderful old hotel. That feels pretty good, Mike. Actually, you know, so many people get deeply into skiing that you might use a boot like this and put it on a contraption like this that's made for skiing on dry land. A lot of skiers are skiing more and more all year round. You may want to ski all year round, but you don't want to dress for it all year round. I guess it's a natural extension that they would probably start doing acrobatic skiing all year round too. And in Utah, out of plastic snow, they build a manmade ramp off which the real hot doggers, the people who are the ski athletes and acrobatics can practice their jumps and turns and twists evenings. John Rieger has the story. The beauty of the Wasatch Mountains lasts all year round. These hills surrounding the Nordic Valley ski area north of Ogden would be painted white in the winter and bustling with the activity of snow skiing. But during the summer, the hills turn a peaceful green and the valley falls asleep until the snow flies. At least it used to sleep until Ogden resident Bob Salerno dug into the side of the mountain and built a summer ski ramp for professional aerial acrobats. Who built it last summer. Last summer, in August. We wanted to have a better place to train, and we came up with the idea of building this. It's on the ground. The main reason we build it on the ground, most jumps we've had before. We're built upon scaffolding. So I had to climb up the scaffolding 40ft high, and then it was scaled down. A surface, steep like this.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/138747/file/257173#t=1949.24,2058.719"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/138747/file/257173/transcript/72809/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"From that high, it was pretty scary. There's quite a few different jumping areas, but there's none. There aren't any this big. This is the biggest one in the world and it's made for the best people. The snow, but the ski jump is plastic bristles. This is called poly snow. We call it green meanies because it's mean if you fall. And how do you keep the poly snow slick? We use a sprinkler system to keep the surface wet. It keeps it colder. And that way our speed is more consistent. We've got this. We have here when we lift the jump up and then put in shims underneath it, we can raise it up about four inches at a time. The higher it goes, the higher the jumper in the. Let's put another forward and make it just a little higher. How big is this pandemic? It's about 100ft long and 40ft wide, and it's about 12ft deep in the middle. And it pulls up to the cellar on the ends. Where do you get the water for? We did it from down below. Just a regular qualifier. So we pump it up the hill and fill it up just like you would your swimming pool. It's probably the best way to learn safely. You can do so on your own head. You can't vacuum in. The manmade ramp is the main feature of the Nordic Valley facility. But for those of us who ski only a few times, there are more down to earth ways to train for winter skiing. But how do these grass skis work? They work a lot like a track to tread the road. Does it? Standing on them the tread rules. And you ski on them just like you with regular skis.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/138747/file/257173#t=2059.409,2171.07"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/138747/file/257173/transcript/72809/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Basking in is a really good way to warm up the coming season. It is the same as it is on the snow, except that you're rolling downhill instead of sliding. So since there's no snow during the summer, give it a try to grass skiing. Spouse. So. But. For aerial training. Bob uses a trampoline and professionals come from all over the world to learn and practice new moves in the air safely before trying them out on the snow or on the jump. The easiest trampoline to practice the rules that we take up to the artificial turf. So this trampoline is the first place we start with or change it. This is a belt we use you as well. If you were going to fall on your head or something dangerous is going to happen, I can hold you up in the air. When Bob Salerno was 21. He was the 1974 world champion of aerial acrobatics, and he used his experience to create the perfect jump to world champion aerials who helped me design the journey and helped actually build it. So they knew exactly what they wanted when they build it. And we did it up here on the mountainside. So it would be exactly like it is on the snow. Bob holds exhibitions during the summer and the younger hopefuls gather with the champions to show their skills. They use some of their winter equipment like boots and skis, but they need a wetsuit top to keep warm in the water and a lifejacket to stay afloat. They also use dishwashing liquid instead of wax on the bottom of their skis. Junk food is total concentration. After all of Bob's coaching and watching the pros make it look so easy. Why not give it a try? Excuse me. Could someone here show me how to do a triple somersault? Well, you may not want to take the whole plunge the way John did, but if you want to try your hand at grass skin, you can do it right here in this area. In the Baltimore area, there are places like Ski Liberty and round Top where you can put these things on and wander over the grass to your heart's content. During Denise did a tip on it not long ago and it sounds like a lot of fun. We'll be back with more Evening magazine. If you remember back, we didn't get a whole lot of snow last winter in the Maryland area. Let's hope that this coming winter we get at least a few good snowfalls to please all you skiers out there, as well as those of us who hope to learn how to ski right now. Obviously, it's still summertime in Baltimore. Chef Tell is going to show you how to prepare a cool and refreshing summer soup. Dr. Jim Glasgow has a body quiz on nutrition and cholesterol. And Bob Smith will give us a tank of gas getaway to eastern Maryland and to the Tidewater in. Hi. The stove is too hot today, so I brought to the boil a cup of water and a cup of white wine. If you don't like the white wine, you just can use water. But it tastes much better. Be light some sugar. Depends how sweet you like it because the food has some sugar in there. A piece of lemon peel, piece of a cinnamon stick and one growth. Now this comes to a boil. Then you add some cherries which are pitted and they have some bruises on the like I said. And now this be taken up with a little bit liquefied cornstarch just coincides I liquefied with some water. And now you put this in here, maybe two tablespoons, not more. And as you pull it in, it starts to thicken up. Also, it gets to color just like this, not too much. Now, this comes to a boil again. You add some washed blueberries and then, of course, some strawberries, which are a quarter to a half and clean. So put this in here, bring it to a boil, and don't let it blow for a long time because it boils for a long time, just all berries and the blueberries get over, cook the cherries, have to cook a little bit, but not the other two. So when it comes to boil, you just put it in a guy's bowl. It comes to, boy, let me tell you. So it's not too much, not too sweet. It's just fine. That's because doctors have been saying for the last 25 years that dietary cholesterol is an important indicator of blood cholesterol, and that is an important indicator of heart disease or a person's risk of heart disease. I'm Dr. Jim Wasco. And recently the National Research Council released a report stating that dietary cholesterol had nothing whatsoever to do with a person's risk of heart disease. And now people are as confused as ever. Let's see how much you know about dietary cholesterol and heart disease. It's important to know your blood cholesterol level. True or false? True. And the opinion of the American Heart Association and most cardiologists. They point to the Framingham Heart Study, which looked at 5000 patients over a 25 year period. They found, among other things, that a person with a blood cholesterol of 250 has three times the risk of heart attack as a person with a blood cholesterol of 200. But the way cholesterol is carried in the bloodstream, it's carried on two kinds of proteins, high and low density proteins. If you tend to have a large amount of high density proteins, you'll actually be quite well protected against arteriosclerosis. How can you lower your blood cholesterol level? A exercise. B, fiber. C, low cholesterol diet D medication. Well, according to cardiologists, all except dietary fiber will help lower your blood cholesterol level. If we've learned anything from the National Research Council, it's that we shouldn't be fanatical about our diet. But everyone agrees that high cholesterol should be treated. You will never know if yours is high without an exam and a blood test from your doctor. Hi, I'm Bob Smith with a tank of gas getaway to the colonial capital of the Eastern Shore, eastern Maryland. The wonderful thing about Easton is that it has preserved the best of the past and blended it beautifully with the present. For you, history buffs and the Historical Society complex, you'll find a restored federal style home. It's virtually a museum of beautiful furnishings and memorabilia. Two other houses have been restored and are located at the rear of the garden. For antique fans. The antique shops in Easton are great for browsing. Some of the treasures found here are reputed to be of art gallery quality. Or take your gas getaway to the 70 miles and 1.75 hours southeast from Baltimore to Easton, Maryland. If you want to stay over or just enjoy a great meal and beautiful surroundings, I highly recommend the Tidewater. They offer a package deal here for the weekend. That's a real bargain. A tank of gas got away to Easton, Maryland. Maybe one kind of adventure. And it will be back with one of her stories that you perhaps seen before on a Baltimore man who ventured all the way to the North Pole, Dr. Herbert Frisbie, who rewrote the history books. Now there's this elementary school named after Matthew Henson, the first black man to travel to the Arctic and the co discoverer of the North Pole. But before Baltimore, as Dr. Herbert Frisbee set the record straight, there were no monuments to Matthew Henson. He was a forgotten man in history. Herbert Frisby is himself the second black man to travel to the North Pole. He's an historian, educator, musician and explorer in his own right. For him, it was a long journey from South Baltimore to the top of the world. The North Pole is a frozen wasteland, a bleak geographic point at the top of the earth. The first humans to discover it on April 6th, 1909, made history. Nearly 50 years later, when Baltimore's Herbert Frisbie flew over the pole. The winds were blowing just as cold. The icy terrain was as forbidding as ever. Nothing had changed except history. And Herbert Frisbie changed that himself. A black man went was the first one for a human being to locate and stand on the top of the earth and let it rest there. Before the 1950s, history books gave a white man, Admiral Robert Perry, all the credit for discovering the Pole. Herbert Frisby has spent a lifetime documenting proof that Perry's assistant, Matthew Henson, a black man, actually got there first. These are words taken from parents in both the North Pole. And as you can see, it goes something like this.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/138747/file/257173#t=2813.28,3028.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/138747/file/257173/transcript/72809/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And yet with the pole actually, in sake, I was too weary to take the last few steps. This see my eyes never see again. Plant the stars and stripes over their net at the North Pole. Now, in his late 80s, Frisby traces his obsession with the story back to a sixth grade teacher who told the class that Henson was the first and no doubt the last black person to accomplish such a feat. I said, Mr. Pretty, you're wrong. I'm going to be the second Negro to go to the North Pole and take me up and look at me, look down at my my tattered clothing and said that anything that like you, anything looking like you never actually brought me big stack of paper. And he said, Now I want you to write this sentence 500 times. The sentence was, I must not say foolish things in class. The man insulted me and I said to myself, I am going to make him do that in what I actually thought he said. I am going to make him other and a lie. And you did. And I did. Herbert Frisbee tracked down Matthew Henson. They became close friends. In 1956, a year after Henson's death. The Air Force flew Frisbie over the North Pole to drop a strongbox containing a flag and a plaque honoring the first Explorer. I do mean. I thought to myself I was going to pull my dogs just like Hinson. When I started to board that board, that plane. I don't know how I felt. But it's reaching that point. A lot of people ask me, why would you want to go to the North Pole? My answer, invariably, because it is up there and I want to see it. 25 times, Frisby traveled to the Arctic, bringing back pictures of his Eskimo friends and hundreds of Eskimo artifacts. Well, first time I crossed the Arctic Circle on Saturday and never forget it. And when the plane landed, the men were curious. They came to light the plane and the boys, they came up to the plane. The women ran. They got. They were afraid of me. The first time they had seen a Negro. So one of them grabbed my hand, too. Him white man. I mean white man. And the following year, I turned around to him. No white man, No white man. That's what they call me. Frisby has a large collection of Eskimo art. He keeps many of his memories in his basement, which he calls the igloo. Other pieces are on display at the Maryland Science Center and other museums all over town. His file cabinets are bulging with newspaper clippings about his research and explorations. He's succeeded in bringing honor to Matthew Henson. Unknown man. I was doing the same for myself. Do you think that's true? That's true. That's true. Otherwise, I wouldn't be getting getting this vaccine. Otherwise you wouldn't be here. But there's more. Herbert Frisbie was a newspaper correspondent in Alaska during World War Two. He was a teacher at Douglas High School for 40 years before that.
