So into our highlights now, Greg Nettles in the fifth inning. This is where the roof began leaking later on, just moments later on as a matter of fact. It totally caves in. Doubling off the wall here and Ken Singleton got some brush up work to do. Caught flat footed to begin with and caught at the wall. It's in the 5th. There's been no scores. It's a scoreless game. We'll show you this again in slow motion. And I want you to watch Singleton, if you will, particularly. He gets himself caught back here. Frank Robinson doing the color on these games and doing a superb job, at least in my opinion, calling to our attention. The situation is far as Singleton. He's close. He'll be ready by the time the season opens. They're coming up on Thursday. Now, Cliff Johnson, the very next batter up for the Yankees, clouts this one. It scores the Chris Shambles and Greg Nettles, both of them coming in to give New York a two to nothing lead again in the fifth inning. And Al Bumbrey is the one who. Pitches this ball back into the infield. I want you to watch him closely. We'll compare him with Singleton in just a moment or two down the piece here. Bumbrey getting to it quick on the fly. That's what's important. And he has a terrific aim, great speed, great power for the little guy. He gets it in, but of course too late in this situation. Again, the O's are behind 2-0. Now Dent, this sacrifice fly to Ken Singleton again. Ken, just a bit off center here. Cliff Johnson comes in to make it a three to nothing lead. This is where we switched from Brials to first Stan House and then later Stoddard coming in. Now, the one error in the game that I mentioned, easy Billy Smith playing new position over a shortstop. You see it here off of the bat of none other than Reggie Jackson. It honestly does take a bad hop. We got to see that in slow mo. We don't have the time to spend on that right here because I wanted to show you what happened just a minute or so later than to all number forty four. They're on first. This is Cliff Johnson again at the plate. And you're going to see Jackson look at that right down in the coffin corner as far away as you can get Jackson overpowers it simply here at third base and can't get back in time steady Eddie Murray there to tag him out but again the Yankees and Reggie Jackson getting the final laugh today five nothing and well let's see we've had Rich Dower's freak accident popcorn oil burn Andres Mora he was the overweight this year the sensei another of the broken noses Palmer playing doctor and many wonder if the elbow bone in this case isn't connected to the Peter's grievance of the Palmer bonus bucks from last year now dower again play me or trade me easy Billy Smith no longer so easy and the O's aren't even home yet but won't it all still be great and having all these little problems to report on and work with day in day out right here in our own ball yard Thursday April 14 George Bamberger and the Brewers right here and most of us are sitting on ready The Bullets weren't. But the weather couldn't last forever. No it sure couldn't. We had a great last week. You know it had to come to an end sometime and it's not as bad as we're really making it sound. This week though you will have some rain so if you're like me and don't have an umbrella an eight dollar investment might not hurt too bad. It's starting to cloud up just a little bit right now but no rain expected tonight. Fifty-five degrees right now, that's 13 degrees Celsius. Humidity still isn't bad at all. It hadn't really gone above 25% since early Friday afternoon. Now 24%. Winds are from the north at 12 miles an hour, and the barometric pressure is starting to go up just a little bit, 30.27. Instant eye this afternoon caught itself goofing off. It was laying down on a hill. Suddenly, its little lens opened up, and all of a sudden, here it is. Instant eye at rest, but it's a beautiful shot. Notice the clouds, just variable cloudiness this afternoon, even though if you look outside right now from the west we're starting to see a little bit more cloud cover. This sunshine might be a thing of the past for the next two or three days, but then again like Don and I were talking about, can't have last weeks all the time, but gonna be close. What's going on today? A nice fair weather system over the Great Lakes is dominating our weather. High big big high pressure system now east of Lake Superior. Is causing this cool weather to be upon us. Of course, it's got a clockwise flow of air, and it's keeping most of the cities north of this cold front fairly cool. Charleston had 58 today, Chicago had 42, New York just 56. All of these cities in the past three or four days had temperatures into the 70s. Now this system is in the process of moving in an easterly direction, and right at this moment, as I speak, just off of Ocean City, another high pressure system is about to form. Both of these are going to play into our weather over the next, make it day and a half, maybe two days. What's going to go on is a system now out in the west, a low pressure system with a stationary front going east. The whole situation is going to move in an easterly direction into Mars maps. I'm going to show you what I'm talking about. Here you can see the two highs, a secondary high pressure system now out into the ocean. Here's that big high pressure that's giving us our cool temperatures now. They're both going to be moving out into ocean. And with the clockwise flow of air bringing a lot of moisture into our area gonna combine with a warm front coming off of that low I just showed you which is still moving in an easterly direction get that cool ocean air into some nice choice warm southern air temperatures down in the eighties into the upper sixties and you're going to get some rain so uh... It looks like by tomorrow afternoon monday uh... Six seven o'clock we're gonna get some clouds gonna get the rain that will probably last into Tuesday. Wish I could tell you better but it's just not in the cards for the next two or three days. Statewide right now everybody's got partly cloudy skies and temperatures all into the 50s out west in Oakland 54, 57 in Cumberland. You go in an easterly direction 52 degrees now in Salisbury up near Havana degrees 51 degrees right now 55 now in Timonium. Winds from the north easter lee direction that high pressure system doing it to us 10 to 16 knots on the bay wave chops of one to two feet. Forecast I've seen worse look something like this Fair and cool tonight lows of 34 to 39 degrees tomorrow continued cloudy a little bit cool Chance of a shower by 6 7 o'clock highs of 59 degrees tomorrow night rain likely Boo lows of 43 degrees there are your tides so Bob Turk will be back tomorrow Took his vacation when it was sunny comes back when it's rainy. High food costs may have sent a lot of people to loan companies in the past year. When you see news happening in your neighborhood call the hotline at five seven eight thirteen thirteen. Luckily, there were no deaths or serious injuries and a collision between a speeding fire truck and a car in Forest Park this afternoon. The fire truck was racing to a fire call on Ethlin Avenue when it was hit in the rear by a car going north on Granada. Several firefighters were taken to Mercy Hospital, but there turned out to be no serious injuries. The same is true of the occupants of the car. They went to Sinai Hospital where they were treated for bruises and then released. The fire turned out be a small kitchen fire which also injured no one. Both city and county fire crews were called out to fight yet another brush fire late this afternoon. This fire occurred over two dozen acres before burned over two dozens of acres before it could be brought under control just east of the Jones Falls Expressway to about the city line. Baltimore County has a ban on all open burning for most of the weekend and fire officials tell us this is the brush fire season. Every major area subdivision has had some sort of brush fire activity this weekend. A three alarm fire in this Barrel Reclamation Center in Curtis Bay last night is still without an official cause tonight. The fire broke out shortly after six o'clock last night and quickly spread to three alarms. The victim, Maryland Steel Drum Incorporated, recycles old 55-gallon steel drums, emptying, cleaning, painting, and then marketing them. It was in the paint shed the fire got its start last night. The shed was destroyed by the fire, but city firefighters saved an adjacent building. And firemen in Anne Arundel County battled a stubborn two alarm fire in a bar near Pasadena late tonight. There were no injuries and no damage estimate is yet available. Still to come, President Carter continues his African trip and Steny Hoyer takes a trip closer to home, East Vittle Street. Kind of a painless grind in ford lauderdale this afternoon here's how it looks on our scoreboard today when it's all over five nothing the yankees shut us out dick titrow with six scoreless inning uh... Yanks are four and oh against us in spring training and now it's almost over And the setup to the very first pair of Yankee runs came when Greg Nettles punched this double off the wall this afternoon. And Ken Singleton gets caught just a bit flat-footed back there. Little Al Bumbry, a firecracker that he is, over to pack it up and send it in. That sends Shambles down to third. Nettls is at second, and then the big cloud here from Cliff Johnson. What a big guy he is. Gosh, I remember when he was working first base over in the other league, now catching for these guys. 2-0 lead. The Shameless and Nettles are both in at this point. All of it in the fifth inning up until this point Nellie Blyles a lot of a lot of pressure on him this year to help this organization had retired 10 in a row and he's having a pretty darn good afternoon here you see the slow-mo that play Bumbury what an arm on that guy is scattering it in there now a Bucky Dent sacrifice fly to Ken Singleton here Cliff Johnson is the one to score it's a three nothing game and for all intents and purposes it is Well over by this point in the afternoon. Ken Singleton earlier on a play, Frank Robinson, I think, calling it accurately and showing us that Ken Singletons isn't quite up to form, although I'm sure he will be on Thursday afternoon not charging those like we saw Bumber do a while ago. Now, this is a bad hop to easy Billy Smith. New position for him down there at shortstop. The sensei playing Billy's old position second over to scoop it up. Just one of our problems this afternoon. Only error for us. I love this stand house to the Chris Chambliss. Chambliss finds the furthest corner he can poke it into, and Reggie Jackson overcharges third a bit. He's out there, but he comes back to do us some damage later on, and we'll show you that a little bit later on in the sportscast, too. The O's open the real McCoy, then on Thursday in Milwaukee, then on to Kansas City before home to open against Bamberger's Bunch, the Brewers, April 14, and most of us can hardly wait. New york nicks couldn't uh... They took a one fourteen hundred nine decision against the bullets uh... Their sixth loss of eight home games mackadoo and shelton each with twenty five shelton has to to come up with a fifteen hundred dollar fine i uh... Presume the biggie not here out due to a death in the family his grandmother san antonio winning over philadelphia today houston uh... Continues to lose this time to denver atlanta keeps on winning now in the late going easily over new jersey today milwaukee dumps detroit indiana over boston and there the celtics are out of it eliminated from any playoff possibility whatsoever seattle winning over portland today one oh one to eighty six also with the phoenix suns uh... Winners over golden state tonight a hundred five ninety nine kansas city out in los angeles that game was just now underway well at least a moral victory for us uh... Caps and hockey fans a four four tie in cap center against the canadians Guy Charon a caps record his thirty-seventh goal of the season today as i say it's a moral victory because the caps have never won between these two in the series this is the first time in fact that they've tied elsewhere it's uh... The islanders over detroit by a final of five two pittsburgh stops toronto six three boston beating the new york rangers by a file of eight three atlanta again over a buffalo four two and cleveland earlier today stopping chicago four two now in golf twenty-year-old spaniard the severiano balesteros became the man to win an American tour title in 15 years today. Three birdies on the back nine of the closing nine to win the Greater Greensboro open. 12-Foot putt at number 16 saves par for Ballesteros and keeps him up front. Let's go ahead and go to it full screen if we may gentlemen. 6 under 66, 6 under 282 for the entire route Ballestero slips runs past the pin with a 7-foot putt at number 18 today that bogey opened the door for Jack Renner playing behind Savvy. Renner's turn at virtually the same putt for par and a tie. Ballesteros watch just as his friend runs past the cup like he had to wind up one stroke back. Ladies are doing it in the Dinosaur rich Winner's Circle Classic and Canadian Sandra Post has taken a sudden death or a sudden life playoff victory over Penny Poults in the Winner circle that being played at Rancho Mirage in California. Post winning picking up $35,000 for the effort today Jan Stevenson and Debbie Massey were tied and two shots back. In auto racing, a couple of fronts today. First, Carlos Ruderman in his Ferrari, pacing them out in the US Grand Prix West, is what they called it, out at Long Beach. Darrell Waltrip in his Chevrolet, winning for the stock guys today. And back to the birds a moment, if I may, I mentioned Reggie Jackson, a big base hit, knocking in their fourth run today. But the only reason I really wanted to show you this is because I love to watch this guy, number 17, Mickey Rivers run. In fact, when he's here in town, and I think Jerry Turner would agree with me. It's a pleasure to sit over at the ball yard and just watch the guy walk. That's Roy White down in second, and there's the Reggie Barr himself over at first. Big base hit against our guys today. Again, the Yanks four and oh against us in spring training, but we're gonna rip all that up, erase all those stats, and start anew on Thursday afternoon. And as I mentioned earlier, back for the home opener then on the 14th of April. And I'm sitting on ready.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149158/file/273777#t=2447.31,2775.32
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149158/file/273777/transcript/80279/annotation/59
Speaker 2: Thank you very much Tom. If you like sleet, you'll love Martin. If you love sleet you're nuts. Hey, it caught everybody by surprise. I mean, literally it caught everyone by surprise, you know. I stepped out to get some dinner. I walked out and I said, what is this? But it's nothing that's going to cause any problems. Keep the chains and the boots and everything inside. It's going go away as quickly as it came. Let me just put it to you that way. It's getting cold though. It's gettin' super cold. It's down to 45 degrees right now. Down 10 degrees from when we last saw you. That is seven degrees celsius humidity's gone up uh... By fourteen percent getting some moisture in the air thirty eight percent right now winds are from the north at seven miles an hour the barometric pressure is thirty fourteen and falling satellite i'm not you know okay great we had some nice guys here today so let's leave that alone what i want to show you is this stuff out here it's a big front all centering out of a low there's a cold front stretching off of it, a warm front stretching off it. It's going to appear here in just a second okay here's the cold portion of it here's a warm front this is what's given us a lot of problems start watching the flow of air it's gonna really pick up and move toward me at an extremely fast rate there you just saw it basically that's what happened that was one of the causes of our weather okay we had a real nice day today it was due to uh... Southerly flow of the air and i'm just gonna forget about that because it's raining right now and i want to explain this to you we've got a small high pressure system forming the atlantic Excuse me, right here, just somewhere off of Ocean City. Also this high-pressure system in canada is moved in an easterly direction between both of them primarily this one near ocean city we're getting a flow of air in off of the ocean and there's a lot of moisture in that air and that air is also fairly cold this cold front right here even though it's past us uh... Behind it there's still some pretty cold air and this high pressure system's giving us a lot a cold air the two add up to uh... Sleet and that's exactly what we had it's not hail It's not freezing rain. It's actually sleep. But the temperatures down here on the ground where it counts are warm enough that it's not going to freeze or anything. But way up in the atmosphere, a few thousand feet up where it's made, it's definitely sleet. The situation's not really going to improve too much as we progress toward tomorrow. This warm front right here is going to come into play as it moves in an easterly direction. Our chances of rain are going to greatly increase. As a matter of fact, on tomorrow's map, you'll be able to see a little bit better what the entire situation is. Here's that high pressure system I told you about. It's now well formed out into the ocean. Believe it or not. Even though it's causing this rain right now it's not really totally formed this high-pressure system from canada has moved on down and between the two of them we're going to get a massive flow of some cold air off the ocean this warm front is going to cross over us two and two equal four and four in this case equals some rain. You can see the temperatures still down in the south are well into the eighties eighty two in new orleans eighty degrees in atlanta eighty way down here in miami beach but you start moving up and you're into the fifties into the forties into the 20s and teens up in Maine. This warm front as it moves up is going to cause rain all along the Atlantic coastal states and if you happen to be going to Vermont for some kind of vacation, you're going to get some snow. As a matter of fact, they're getting four and five inches of snow up there right now. But it's just your typical nice, well it's not a nice rain shower, but it's just a rain shower and don't panic, the phone has literally been ringing off of Statewide right now, believe it or not, the only places in a three state area getting rain are us here in Baltimore and down in Richmond, Virginia. They've got 51, we've got 45. No chance of freezing. It's still fairly warm if you consider into the 40s warm. Out in the western portion of the state, 39 degrees in Oakland. They're not too happy about that. 50 in Salisbury right now. It's just not gonna get any better but it's not gonna any worse. Winds coming from the north. Easterly direction, due to those highs, 10 to 16 knots on the bay. Wave chops of one to two feet. Forecast could be worse. Let's just be blunt about it. Cloudy, cool, occasional light rain tonight. Okay nothing to really worry about no chance of freezing road conditions uh... High tomorrow is going to be fifty nine degrees going to see some clouds and definitely some rain tomorrow afternoon tomorrow night rain almost a positive fact lows down to forty three degrees there are your tides so don it threw us for a loop but it didn't throw us to the mat i should hope there would be no chance
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149158/file/273777#t=2851.839,3132.82
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149158/file/273777/transcript/80279/annotation/62
Speaker 2: conditions it was eighty three yesterday I'm telling you anyway that's it thank you very much Marty well at least the bad weather waited until tonight to come and this afternoon the Sun was out for a pretty special race in Essex for the past four years the Midway Cafe in EsseX has sponsored a baby buggy race to raise money for different health foundations last year the money went to the mustard muscular dystrophy fund in two years before that the cancer fund was the recipient well this year the $300 contribution went to multiple sclerosis and as you can see the competitive spirit was alive today.
