Hi, I'm Jackie Hall. And I'm Harold Anthony. Easter is a time when a lot of folks strut their stuff and their springtime finery. Well, we've invited Felicia Roberts, Miss Big and Beautiful for 1989 and her core to do just that and find out some interesting things about these ladies. And it's showtime at the Apollo. We'll go behind the scenes and get a glimpse of the history and the future of that world famous theater. All of that and more next on City Line. Yeah. Yeah. Once again, I'd like to wish everyone a happy Easter and welcome you once again to City Life. There's an air of excitement around the studio today, the air of excitement that always accompanies a major event. We're having a major one here today in the form of a big and beautiful fashion show. And the guys who are helping to sponsor this show are joining us right here on stage. We have Mr. William Beverley, who's the promotions director. And also joining us is Mr. William Allen, owner of the Odyssey Studios. I'd like to welcome you back to City Life. Thank you. Good to have you here. My pleasure. Okay. Now, you know, I noticed back in the old days at one time, all full figured woman was the thing, especially around the turn of the century. And then all of a sudden, you know, with Twiggy and everybody else, all of a sudden, Slim was in. Now there's a resurgence of the full figured woman. Is this my imagination or is this something that's really happening now? This is really happening. This is definitely happening because the market is opening up and it has been opening up for a while now to the economics of the big lady because there are more large in full figured ladies out there than they are the Twinkies.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375#t=47.57,171.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375/transcript/48978/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So they were losing a big budget, a big economical money, go get it from excluding good fashions for the full figured lady. What what did Oprah's decision to lose £67 do to the whole image of the full figure woman? Because the way it said, you know, I don't want to be full figured anymore. I want to be slim and trim like Twiggy. What did that do you think? Do you think? I don't think it did anything to the four figure ladies who want to be four figure. I think it just helped her own situation out because she didn't want to be as big as she was. So I don't think it did anything for the we don't think it hurt the image at all. William Beverley Not at all. Basically, the world is made up of all different people and everyone has to be able to project well depending on what their weight, size, age and what we find at our studio, we try to work with all people to bring the best out of them. If you're a full figured person, feel good about yourself, show people that you feel good is important. Let's look at some of the ladies that you brought with you, and especially Miss Felicia Roberts, who is Mrs. Black Big and beautiful for the 1989. Felicia, a suit, son to swim in to be seen in this swimsuit by Carol Ward Designer collection takes inches off the figure. Hidden underwire support enhances the bass line, while the patented construction surrounds the entire body, taking it an inch or more off the waist and stomach and smooths the bulges on the hips. Now, you know, one time four figure ladies wouldn't dare come out in the open on the beach or in a bathing suit without a cover up.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375#t=172.08,274.49"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375/transcript/48978/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Hey, then coming out bow and looking delicious with a great treat. This is Antoinette. Wild things, steamy jungles are brought to mind with this swimsuit with its faux savage look, its figure flattering and figure hiding with its ruffled skirt and diagonal print in fuchsia, purple and turquoise. This suit was made exclusively for Woman's World by Robbie Lynn. Put some native straw jewelry with it and watch out, ladies. You might have to tame your savage beast. No color restrictions for the full figured woman. Oh, not any more. I mean, you know, the dark colors we're in because they try to camouflage their size. They're proud of the size. So they get into those pastels, kind of like colors and get to those no dainty looks. We know as a band that had a little scary type of the dainty look, they can be dainty. Is that is there anything that a full figured woman should stay away from as far as fashions go? I remember a question like that went down, the floor was gone. I think they should not really get into the fads. You know that. What's up for the slimmer lady? Because that's the vogue look on the essence. Look of the new look. Get into something that's complementary to them. Let's go. Next sent the positive aspect of what they look, but some people have trouble determining what is complementary to them. I mean, as far as like fashions and designs go like horizontal stripes. It should a full figured woman wear horizontal stripes at the cut is good. If the cut is good, the design is good and the style is good. They can wear horizontal stripes, they can wear the geometric, they can wear the the prints, they wear any, any style.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375#t=275.48,372.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375/transcript/48978/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"As long as the cut is good and it fits them well. Okay, we have another model. Oh, this is Deidre. Not just pieces. Possibilities. That's it. That's what Deidre has with this outfit. Layering hot pink with pink and white stripes brings the illusion of height to the eye. The taller we look, the thinner we look. Paired these tops with white cotton like rope, pull on pants, and you have an outfit that's comfortable but ready for anything on the go. Right now, all the ladies that I've seen walking out here today seem to have a certain attitude which shows that there is a resurgence. There's a problem about being big and beautiful. Yeah, I mean, these ladies. Well, now we have Beverly out here mixing clean cut sportswear with splashes of color. This khaki outfit by fitting image has all that it takes in easy care. 5050 poly cotton. The jacket has two button closure and the trousers are pleat front with a start with slash pockets. The layering of the Polos gives that color and brightness that all this outfit would need to go. The league has extended this with a red jungle print scarf and polished red paper airplane style earrings. All right. Now let's talk about the availability of some of these items that we've been seeing here. A lot of women's stores will cut the sizes off at a certain size. I mean, do these women have to go all the way to New Jersey or someplace to get these these. Well, they the fashions you're seeing today are from women's world. Mm hmm. Diane is the manager of Woman's Well in Columbia. So they have them in Colombia. Sun Valley, Golden Ring. I guess she'll give you some are listings of where they're located, But I mean, they're all the fourth biggest stores now are everywhere.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375#t=372.59,478.76"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375/transcript/48978/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Even the stores that go strictly into the boutiques now have a section in their store for full figured. So everybody is getting on the bandwagon then with the full figured look. So tell us why you decided to have a pageant for the Miss Big and Beautiful. Well, the rationale therefore, the rationale is basically we have at Odyssey, we have all sizes of models. One time I was told I was crazy for getting the full figure of the larger lady to get into modeling, but they have to feel good about themselves. They have to get a better image of themselves. The aerobics is great, but everyone's not going to get slim and some are not even interest and some someone not even interested in being slim. So we cater to the various sizes in order for people to call out and say, okay, let's get a full figured model. We had to develop a pageant to show them that full figured is fashionable. Okay, let's see if we can get another model in spreading. This is Phylicia. A world of colors can be found in this casual outfit by Sharon Anthony Sporty, featuring a cardigan style jacket and full circle skirt and poly cotton knit. Bring out the color with this purple silk shell by Jordan with its cap sleeve and your neckline, and tie it all together with a woven fuchsia belt. Alicia has chosen to accent this outfit with this season's newest neutral gold to add a soft shine. Oh, very, very complimentary for an easier afternoon, if you like, at least that early. These ladies have worked with us. They develop a positive attitude about themselves. You know, all ladies, when they first started to get into things, but not necessarily have that positive attitude, we work hard to work with them and you see the finished results.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375#t=479.48,584.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375/transcript/48978/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, we'll get a chance to see even more of that positive attitude in more fabulous fashions on your fabulous ladies. Right after this break. We're back with our Easter show celebrating the big and beautiful woman. And we've been joined by Miss Big and Beautiful in 1989. And we welcome you to City Life, Felicia Roberts. Thank you. Thank you for coming. How does it feel? You've been raining, what, a month now? I feel good. But then I felt great before. Oh, really? So let's talk about that. Is that one of the reasons why you entered? I mean, you felt so good about yourself from the beginning that this was just an extension of that? That and I was really just trying to find another hobby because I was a little bored. I was sitting around the house because I had been off from work for a while. I hope not eating. I'm trying not to. Okay. And you found a new hobby? Well, a long lost one that is there. So what are some of the things that you'll be doing during your reign? Well, I'll be going to modeling classes now. I will also get a trip to New York. And test ride. Mm hmm. Let me. Let me pose your question, William. We've been seeing all these fabulous women walking around. What about the full figured man? There's not a market yet for the full figured man. You knows there's no stores opening up. Very much for the four big men. They need to stick with the aerobics right now until they've developed that market. Well, they are two year old Stephen Windsor, big and tall men. And then he probably monopolizes it because no other man that I know of. Okay. How about for women? Are there many designers getting on board, fashion designers? Oh, absolutely.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375#t=585.13,720.87"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/105618/file/206375/transcript/48978/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"All the full figured stores now are getting these top designers to design fashions for the full figured ladies before they're fashion look like tents and sheets. Give equal time to performance and color with this purple and gold color blocked outfit of 100%. Real soft, full circle, skirt draped gracefully. And the camp style shirt makes an intense focus on casual fashion. Okay, that's pretty low volume. What constitutes a full figure? I mean, what sizes is one considered? Well, it really varies to me. Full figure. It starts at size 16. Some people consider four figured from 13 to 14. If you're really trying to lose weight, you might consider yourself full figured at 1112. Okay. Mm hmm. So really, it can a woman reach a size where you just say, oh, that's just too much? You know, certainly it's certainly I mean, full figured doesn't mean obese necessarily. All fat. Mm hmm. Okay. For thinking means you're large, but you're fairly shapely with it. Proportion is not. And proportion of women. So that's the ideal for for the lady. Then you have some ladies that are large, that are bigger in some places and other places, but they're not considered full figured. They're just big. All of the ladies that we have today are just fabulous. Let's see some more. Mm hmm. This is Sarah. The graceful sweep of a long, full skirt to move with you in softness. How can the woman use the fashions, though, and what can the fashions actually do for the big and beautiful woman? Felicia? William Beverly Well, basically, when a lady is going shop and talking about fashion, she needs to like I spoke about earlier, is not to try to follow to try and find things that fit her and look good on her so that when she goes out, she feels good. A lot of times it build back to back again because I guess all of us can pass up knowing if we don't feel good, we don't look good in it. So when they start feeling good about themselves and knowing that they are going to be there, it works great. I see. How about makeup tips? We'll get into that after. This. So one thing we noticed, there is no pattern, no color, no style taboo, right? Not anymore. Anthony stated about the make up. That's also something different for the full figured lady too, because before she didn't really care that much about how the makeup set or how the hairstyling look. Robert Johnson does our makeup, so he has kind of well brought them to a point where they get more into the glamor makeup before they weren't getting into glamor. Jackie Branch gets into the hair styling and, you know, so between Jackie Tarrant and Robert Johnson, the mode that these ladies and get them into looking very not only looking positive but feeling better about themselves when they look in the mirror now they feel good now, except for ladies like Miss Big and beautiful Hair. She's always I was getting ready to say something and I have I've always liked makeup and I've always liked colors and I've always like bright colors. Yeah, he was really, really working. I guess by now I, I can, within eight bars, know when it came to his talent there. And he's got talent there. And that's what we want. Mm hmm. And that's. So what they did was change it from Black Entertainment to rather from a burlesque entertainment into Black Entertainment. It was the amateur night that made the Apollo, not the Apollo that made the average. I want to clarify that. Then everyone who was anyone performed at amateur night at the Apollo. I've watched many stars born there at the Apollo and there continued to be born.
