And Android accounting community is still trying to figure out how and why their neighbor was killed in front of her home in Arnold early yesterday morning. 47 year old Joanne Valentine was shot to death about 4 a.m. Sunday morning in the driveway of her waterfront home. Authorities say she had approached a car that followed her home when the shots rang out. She died a short time later at Shop Trauma. The neighborhood of Margo Vista is not accustomed to such violence. It's really quiet and not much happens. It's like you don't really have to lock your door at night, but something like this happens. It gets pretty serious, I guess. Valentine's relatives say she was carrying about $3,000. That was not taken by the gunman. Police are looking into the possibility that Valentine's murder is connected to the carjacking of a pizza delivery man in the same area on Saturday night. It was also a violent weekend in Baltimore City with a number of shootings and at least one homicide. 24 year old Ronald Smith was killed execution style yesterday in southwest Baltimore. Authorities say a gunman shot and killed him in an apparent random drive by attack. They're driving along for no reason. Car pulls up alongside the driver, takes one shot, hits the passenger in the head, and they don't know why. What caused this? They just got a brief glimpse of the car. It was a dark blue, four door tinted window car. They barely had time to even realize what had happened. Authorities say the man was on his way to dinner with relatives he was visiting when the shooting happened. This is the third killing of a person on Florida's highways in the past month. The warnings have gone out to families of young children once again. The letters say someone is selling a temporary tattoo in the shape of a blue star that's soaked with D every year. The letter appears causing outbreaks of fear among parents. But the problem is there's no such thing as a blue star tattoo. It's a hoax. Joining us now to discuss this rather terrible joke is Mike Gimbel from the Baltimore County of Substance Abuse. Why is this happening and why does it happen every year? Well, I think it's some well-meaning parents and well-meaning officials who are trying to get a message out about drugs. The problem is it's not accurate information. And this letter has been going on now for over five years. And it's almost like a chain letter. And it grows and it grows because people are well-meaning. But the fact is that the letter is not accurate. And we are trying to let people know that the information in that letter is not true. We need to get the facts. We do not have one documented case. And we're encouraging parents and professionals to stop sending that letter out. We have video of the letter writer who's getting these letters, Mike. Well, the letter is actually not exactly what LSD looks like. You can see LSD is sold in all different. Sizes and shapes. And yes, it can be sold in little of animal forms and little stamps. But this is not being sold to young people. And the letters say warning. Be aware these blue stars are being sold to young kids and it's mostly being targeted toward elementary and preschool. And we're trying again to let parents say become, you know, relax, this is not happening. Call our office. Let us know if you get this letter. But the main thing is to stop the chain of sending it out to other schools and other parents because people get nervous. I think parents get really scared right now with school back in session. What is the thing that parents should know today might that should be able to come away from a program like this, knowing about LSD and the dangers that it poses to our children? I think they need to know LSD is a drug that's out there. It is increasing in use, but that's mostly in the high schools, not in elementary or preschool. We are not seeing LSD in elementary school. If they hear about this letter, don't panic. Give us a call. We'll get you some accurate information and get the facts. Let's talk about the call. So the activity that we were talking about earlier on the morning edition, we were expecting this to occur, but it's coming in a lot quicker than we thought and it's pretty fast moving system right now. So check out early this morning. We did try to get a look at the sunrise, but it was a damp morning with lots of fog around. Really slow things down very much. But it was really an indication of the humidity and certainly no sunrise was visible. Whatever sunshine we thought we might see peeking through the clouds. We've taken that idea back and taken that completely out of the forecast. But here is our local radar right now. You notice a general trend of these coming from the southwest to the northeast are moving right along at 30 to 45 miles an hour. And right now, we see a line of showers extending heading right into the Baltimore area. So don't be surprised to hear thunder, in fact, right now or certainly over the next hour or so, further out to the west, coming out of the mountains down in central central western Virginia or West central Virginia, that's where that severe thunderstorm warning had been noted. And that means severe thunderstorms are already indicated and already on the ground. Our severe thunderstorm watch pretty much includes everything in Maryland, with the exception of the extreme western part of the state. So throughout the day till 6:00, that is going to be a problem, something to contend with. Take a quick look at the temperatures right now. And we are pushing toward 80 degrees where the rain does fall. It will hold the temporary into the 70s. Everywhere else will probably get into the low 80s today.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893#t=639.34,723.58"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893/transcript/71115/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But this is the last day of this warm and tropical stuff because as this massive system with the thunderstorms pushes on through, there are some cooler, drier air behind it. But of course, again, to emphasize this, this afternoon, there could be heavy downpours, maybe even some hail and some gusty winds, winds in excess of perhaps 50 to 60 miles an hour. So that's a distinct possibility. Here is how the satellite shows this thing developing. And you notice there is this push coming down from the north driving this whole system right now. A low pressure wave traveling up along the front is what's really responsible for activating this. It is displacing the warm and humid air that had come into the area and made yesterday such a warm day. But it will be replaced by more autumn like conditions. And we're going to see starting tomorrow and certainly into the middle part and the later part of the week, more conditions that are more typical of autumn than what we've had for the last couple of days. Well, as far as the temperatures go, then for today, as we said, we're getting up into the low 80s in many places where there has been rain. The temperature will stay in the 70s, downtown thermometer anticipating 83. And we'll see how that turns out. Like I said, depends on where the showers occur out of the bay. A very dangerous day to be out in the bay, I think south to southwest, winds at least 20 to 25 knots. And those showers of severe thunderstorms could be anywhere on the bay. A small craft advisory weighs two four feet are a distinct possibility. So here's a story this afternoon. Severe thunderstorm watch in effect just about everywhere until 6:00.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893#t=724.06,812.41"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893/transcript/71115/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"High temperature, we'll call it low 80s. By tonight, things will start to break up, say after 9:00 or so, the thunderstorm probability starts to decrease dramatically, then clearing in cool, overnight, low 60. And then tomorrow, a totally different day. Really partly sunny, breezy and cool. High temperature in the low 70s. And that is that whole new air mass coming on in to get us back to conditions that are much more typical of say the last week in September, which it is. So Autumn Air is about to arrive, but we've got some real excitement to contend with until that actually happens. What is that? I think that might be the rain falling on our roof as we speak. But Willis says his home life is a far cry from the rough and tumble movie world he lives in. This is not your case. Do you understand me? I'm a bear here. Bruce Willis has built his career on playing quick thinking, hard edged action heroes. So you may be quite surprised to hear this. Star says he's merely one of the minions in his rough and tumble world. People think me, Bruce Willis, big action star. Guns, movies, money, everything like that. I have nothing to say about the world that I live in. I'm surrounded by about 15 women. I got two little kids, my wife, housekeepers, cook and all women. I try to get a word in edgewise sober. You have to take this to confession with a grain of salt. But Willis has made it clear that life as a movie star with all its perks and glamor has taken a backseat these days. Do you ever put this stuff b you know, to the side Is the acting come such a ways? For about the last five years? It has. And my family is the most important thing. All of the damage homes appeared on Scathed. And that was a very lucky thing. With me right now is Peggy Malloy of A\u0026E. Peggy, thanks so much for being with us. How many homes were actually out at the height of the storm? About 30,000 customers lost service today because of the storm. And how long will it be before they're all back? I know that you're working feverishly to get power back on. Well, right now, there's 50,000 without service and 10,000 are right here in this area. And we're looking at 2 a.m. before service is restored to everyone. It will be back on, though, definitely overnight. We certainly hope so. We have crews out about 150 crews out working right now. Can you tell me where the areas are that were that received most of the power outages and Toronto County and particularly right here in early heights and our county had probably over 15,000 out in 10,000 right here in early heights. I think that the damage was sustained mainly in Gamble's and Severna Park and in Glen Burnie, right in the central part of the county. Yes. All right. Well, thank you very much for being with us. Good luck on getting all of this back on tonight. I know the residents are looking for. I'm sure they are. Back to you. All right. Before you leave, did anyone mention that they saw a tornado or have reason to believe that a tornado caused some of the damage? Some of the residents told me that that's what they thought it was, that it was very loud, made terrible noise. And when they looked out, that's what they thought it was. That's Bowie State evening classes, cancel severe weather events as it did across the bay onto the eastern shore. Well, Dr. Bob Saka joins us now with the latest word on our stormy weather Bob. Well, I'll tell you, look at our live radar. Give us the location of the thunderstorms right now. We noticed in the last hour or so, they're moving pretty fast. They move pretty much across the eastern shore. The heaviest cells now off in the ocean. So looks like all the excitement, at least for the severe thunderstorms is over. We're still holding out the possibility you may see a shower. There was also some unconfirmed and unconfirmed report of a tornado up in Cecil County. That's yet to be looked at to examine. But a number of tornadoes, two of them, again, unconfirmed in Northern Virginia. So this really was a pretty violent episode. But once again, all watches and warnings are lifted. Right now, all the danger is over. We're going to be talking about some real autumn weather coming in for a big change. And we'll do that just a little bit later on today. Thank you, Doctor Bob. Well, a death warrant has been signed and handed to convicted killer John Thanos. The order stipulates that Thanos will be executed by the first week of November for killing two Baltimore County teenagers, Alex Demetrius, who was in western Maryland. For Thanos, this hearing is on his way back and joins us live now with more on today's decision.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893#t=1722.98,1811.24"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893/transcript/71115/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Alex. Denise, it was a day when the legal system actually gave John channel Jonathan his every chance to stay out of the gas chamber. But in a system where murderers routinely sit out years, even decades under appeal, John Thanos went out of his way to waive all appeals and to move himself to the head of the line on death row. 1961 was the last time Maryland's gas chamber was used. For the first time in 32 years, it could be used again five weeks from now, sometime during the week of November. First, convicted killer John Thanos is scheduled to be put to death. He has to be executed for the 1990 murders of Billy Wayne Brenner and Melody Pistorius, who were shot to death by Thanos during a robbery in Baltimore County. A date for Thanos death is what the historians have been waiting for. I'm happy, but let's wait to see what the date of executions. And that'll make a difference to me. That's a whole different ball game by itself. Well, I'm glad it's been a long four years, but I'm back in the Garret County Court where he was convicted of murder. Thanos demanded that he no longer be represented by any lawyer and that he will waive all appeals of his execution, saying it is an offense to him to come into court. He shouted out, I don't want to die. I want to kill someone. Looking at Melodie Pistorius mother, Thanos said, I want to jump up and kill that woman there. Despite the outburst, a prosecution psychiatrist testified Thanos is rational. He essentially sees his legal position as being inevitable is fixed, that he really has no other possible outcome other than to be executed. And so his choice is to essentially take control of the process himself and to waive further review.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893#t=1811.75,1914.2"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893/transcript/71115/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Judge Fred Thayer also found Panos rational enough to make his own decisions and allowed him to fire his lawyer, waive all appeals and set the execution for the first week of November. The only emotion Thanos showed came when his public defender announced he would file an appeal challenging Thanos competency. Thanos demanded the lawyer to stop meddling. We understand that. But if, in fact the judge is mistaken about the competency ruling, then that decision is not a competent, intelligent decision, and therefore we have a right to have the court of. Please review that. Whether Thanos likes it or not, the public Defender's office will file an appeal on his behalf, although there is no guarantee a stay of execution will be granted while those appeals are reviewed. So as of this evening, John Thanos faces death in Maryland's gas chamber in just five weeks. And like any child's parents, it's something that's out, too. Like this is you want the system at least worked on our behalf and seen a lot of times that it's worth it the other way. But this time I think it's worked on our behalf. Well, the defense did produce one psychologist of their own that they brought to the stand today. And he testified that he thought that Jonathan Isles was not rational or competent to make decisions. That triggered another outburst by Mr. Thanos, who called the man a liar. The judge then questioned Mr. Thanos at some length and then finally resolved the issue by saying that he found his powers to be competent and legally rational. Well, Alex, you say that Thanos says he does not want someone to file an appeal on his behalf. It could be that anyway. Can they go beyond his powers? I'm not an attorney, but I certainly suspect so.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893#t=1914.74,2009.15"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893/transcript/71115/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We already do have confirmation of one appeal being filed by the public defender who represented Mr. Thanos, who Mr. Thanos fired. Even though Mr. Thanos doesn't like it, they will go ahead with that. I'm not sure if that's going to lead to other appeals by others or not. All right. Thank you, Alex. Judge, by the way, can only set a week for execution. You heard in November, A week in November, but not a specific date. An exact time and date within that week will then be set by the warden at the Maryland State Penitentiary in Baltimore. Well, Gelfand, our resident legal expert, joins us now to answer some of the other questions surrounding the final execution. Well, I guess the question one of the first ones to take might be if he if he was competent to stand trial in the first place, why then did we have to have this new competency hearing? Because it's a different test of competency. You know, you or I might determine what we think competency is, how we measure it. You know, look it up in the dictionary. I guarantee you, the definition is not what the law says. Competency is after you've been sentenced to death, after you've been sentenced to death. The definition of competency basically is, do you know that you're about to die? That's honestly about the extent of it. It's do you know that the execution of you is impending tomorrow or the next day? That's all. It's not like do you have serious mental problems? Do this, do that. It's that limited. So it's a very, you know, easy issue to if you're the prosecutor in this case, to get by. What about Ed Pistorius, which is the father of one of the children that is is convicted of killing? He wants to attend the execution? Can he? Well, you know, the statute breaks it down into people who must be there and those who can be there that must be theirs.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893#t=2009.63,2103.89"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136320/file/252893/transcript/71115/annotation/22","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Are people like the sheriff of the county where he was indicted. Obviously, the executioner, the doctor of the penitentiary, of the penitentiary. They all must be there. Who can be there? The warden can select between 6 and 12, quote, respectable citizens. It does not say anything about those being the parents. So the way I read it, it's up to the warden. It's within the sound discretion of the warden. I can tell you that no warden that I know of has ever allowed a family member to be present. I mean, I may. There may be, you know, some example somewhere that hasn't made the news, but most of them have felt it's too much of an eye for an eye type of theory to let a family member be present. What this warden will do, we don't know. Very quickly, Mr. Pistorius, I'm sure, is upset to hear that there may be an appeal filed on his behalf, even though he doesn't want it. Why would someone file an appeal on his behalf if he doesn't even want it? The theory of the public defenders is once they start to lose, once the execution start, then the next life becomes cheaper and the next life becomes cheaper and every execution becomes easier to get. That's their theory and why they will continue to push for it. Thank you. Check on tonight's Background File shows 14 inmates are facing executions on Marilyn's death row. This is a very serious problem and the push is on now because kids are returning to school at this point. Pedestrians crossing the tracks. Seems like a quick way to get from one point to the other. But railroad police say there are a number of dangers that could make one crossing your last trip. According to Amtrak train lines, this two mile strip between Penn Station and Frederick Road is one of the most troublesome in the country. If it's not vandalism, that's a problem. It's people crossing the tracks each year. A lot of boys and girls are injured and killed because they choose to play along the railroad tracks. Sergeant Floyd Mercado, an Amtrak police officer, spends a lot of time in classrooms. He tries to educate kids on the dangers of crossing train tracks. What you're finding is they're doing this for a reason, evidently. And that reason is what? To take the shortcut to save time. But in many cases, as in the 600 people who lost their lives, it was time not well spent. But everyone doesn't get the message. Mercado routinely videotapes people who cross the tracks. We have signs on the bridges over here that the railroad is private property. It's a warning sign. It's private property. And that you're not allowed to come on the railroad property. Speaking for the first time at the U.N. headquarters in New York, President Clinton called on all countries to end nuclear weapons testing. President questioned whether the United Nations should become involved in all of the world's conflicts. The United Nations simply cannot become engaged in every one of the world's conflicts. Finally tonight, a small community just south of Annapolis is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. And our George Bellman sketches the history of Highland Beach in Maryland. By George. There are volumes of history along the Chesapeake Bay, and some of it is right here just below Annapolis, Highland Beach, the first charter African-American township in Maryland. Charles Douglas was the founder of Highland Beach after he and his wife were denied access to a nearby beach because of their race. With the help of Frederick Douglas, his influential father, Charles Douglas, purchased the property and his was the first house to be built at Highland Beach. Through the years, the community became filled with the summer homes of educated and influential African-Americans and their friends. Booker Washington, shown here, was a frequent guest. In 1922, Highland Beach was incorporated into a township, the first African-American township in Maryland. Black professionals and businesspeople have summered and lived here for three generations. Norman Jorgensen and Freeman Murray, brother and sister, have lived at Highland Beach all their lives. If you're not bothered with crime though, or drunkenness. Well, I was really shocked. People are going to interpret the law, interpret it the way they want to interpret it. In two minutes. And 50s, the Seattle band manages to offend and shock those who work with rape survivors. I really thought the song sent a really poor message to men, women and children. And perhaps because the song does have a poor message that radio programmers across the country have decided that they don't want to play it. Fewer than a dozen radio stations are airing the song in the Baltimore Washington area, though we can tune in to two of them. And a lot of people talking about rape me. And I think when you get a word like rape that conjures up such negative feelings, it's tough to look at it in a good light. Who knows what Kurt Cobain means about it? We know it's the number two most requested tune in Baltimore. This radio programmer decided to put the song on 98 Rock's playlist because he says it is the strongest musically on an otherwise lackluster album. The band more successful than it wanted to be, is being abused by the music industry. I think in a sense that's part of what was going on in the song rating. Is it complaining about the way that being popular has violated them as musicians and people? But to a person who works with more than 200 rape victims a year, the song is a pretty clumsy attempt to say that. I don't think that anyone is going to come out and say, Yeah, we really believe that, that women should be raped or children should be raped. And in the song there's really no distinction. On the cool side, just about everybody with breezes that have picked up now pushing in this much, much different air mass, all that tropical air. In fact, it's the interaction of the tropical air with this very dense, dry air that triggers those very active conditions that we saw in the thunderstorms today. Fast moving thunderstorms produced on the order of an inch and a half of rain in most locations. And as we check out the national radar, we can see that line now with the front, the boundary between the air mass that's here now, the autumn air and the old summertime air off the coast now is shown by this line of thunderstorms. National radar here is showing a few light echoes out in the panhandle of Maryland, out in Allegany, Washington, and Garrett County. We've got a conduit to drag this cool air right down into not only the mid-Atlantic states, but also the midsection of the country in general. Actually, by Thursday night, we're anticipating the possibility of overnight lows down into the 30s, believe it or not, for tomorrow. Not the coolest of days, but certainly the cooling trend, real evident temperatures in the low 70s downtown thermometer at 72. Suburban areas to the north and west probably won't get out of the 60s. Real windy day tomorrow on the bay. Probably a small craft advisory will be issued west wind, 15 to 30 knots, 2 to 3 foot waves in the bay. Water temperature in the low 70s right now, clear conditions overnight, windy and much cooler. 53 degrees here overnight low tomorrow, lots of sunshine, bright sunshine, a few patchy clouds, but a windy and cool day topping out at 70 degrees in most locations. And check out the five day forecast and we'll let it spool itself right on out, because here is Thursday, we're looking for temperatures to drop down into the upper 30s and in the more distant suburbs could be down closer to the mid 30s.
