And we kept getting closer and closer, and all of a sudden the down wind, I don't know exactly what they call and I'm sure your meteorologist will know, but we hit that power line and the whole sky lit up. The balloon went down and we were falling. Now the pilot guesstimate at five seconds. It couldn't have been that long, but I'm thinking, two second freefall. And he was saying to the chase vehicle, he was saying, we're going down, we're going down. And I thought it was over. I was broadcasting live on the air at the time. Yeah. John, I reported yesterday you had a cellular phone with you and you call the station while you were stuck in the air. Was that to get help or to file a story? Well, a little of both, I admit it. You know, it's weird. Radio guys will take the publicity. It's off of you. And it actually went out. I tried doing that, but it didn't work. But I did have the cellular phone, and they. Marty unit. The gondola flipped and it fell out. They actually recovered that, and it was ruined. Some Baltimore students were on the streets this morning. Not in class. Students at Robert Coleman Elementary were drumming up support for the year round school model program that they'll start this fall. Kai Jackson reports. Many believe it's an idea long overdue. They lined up one after another. Many were armed with signs and banners. They started cheering and chanting, hang on, why do they all support year round schooling? School begins in August and lets out in June of the following year, thereby ending the traditional three month summer vacation. Students will be in session 45 days and out for 15. Then the cycle repeats and it's still 180 days of school. That would allow us two weeks to address children's strengths and children's, academic, weaknesses. You know how how unassuming. Something you have three years. I mean, three months of just sitting down, having fun. But now you'll remember a lot. Kind of because, I'll usually, stay here for the summer. They're my grandma's. Sandra Pinkney joins us, rejoins us with more. You remember the case in California? How could we forget? That's the mystery fumes. Where we never really did find the answer to. Exactly. The several emergency room workers were knocked unconscious by fumes from a patient. Well guess what? It's happened again. This time it happened in Pittsburgh. Hospital workers were trying to save the life of a 76 year old man. He was in cardiac arrest. His skin was extremely hot, blistering and peeling. Workers could also smell chlorine. Moments later, the patient died. The doctors and nurses who worked on him say they developed rashes on their skin. Several special precautions will be taken during the autopsy. Another Healthwatch news. We have a program note for you tonight. ABC's Turning Point takes a fascinating look at the new drug of choice. Heroin. Heroin is making a comeback. It is not just among Hollywood's young and famous, but all across the country, unfortunately. So tonight, Barbara Walters and Meredith Vieira report on heroin hooked from Hollywood to Main Street. Time now to check back with Al Sanders in the Eyewitness Newsroom for an update on some of the stories we're working on for six. Hi, al. Hello, Sally. Tonight had sex. We have, of course, update the situation in Howard County where rescue crews are trying to free a worker trapped in a cave in. We've been talking about how busy road crews are trying to fill all those potholes left behind by Old Man Winter, but what about the damage you're causing to your car? Who's responsible for that? We'll get the answer from Kaufman. Those stories and much more tonight at six. Now let's rejoin Sally and John. Thanks, Sam. A Baltimore woman has taken the dream and made it reality. John tells us how she's making a difference in her neighborhood. This Sally is a lady who has always wanted to own her own business. And goodness knows, haven't we all? But now she does. Only in America. Today's installment of Neighborhood News takes us to the Brooklyn Homes Housing Project, where today was the grand opening for Rosalie Parks convenience store, located on the premises of the Brooklyn Homes Housing project. Rose Lee was able to open this business through the aid of a minority small business loan that's been open now for about two months, said business is booming. She's going to retire. No. Just kidding. There is a severe thunderstorm watch continue in effect for Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland until about 10:00, although it's going to finish probably before by 8:00. Take a look at the radar. Will show you where the storms are even as we speak. Yes. They continue to move to the east. Rather rapid pace right now, around 30 to 40 miles an hour. It really doesn't take that much. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. The same for the TV, the radio or the computer. You got to make a conscious effort to do this. It's it's a little healthy. It's. Remember I said everything in moderation. All right. This is a low fat dessert. It's called dreamy orange pie. It's so easy. You can make it tonight with stuff that you have around the house. I've already started melting my butter. Two tablespoons of it. Real butter. You know, you can use margarine, but I actually I did use margarine, a call for butter. And I used margarine. Okay. Then we're going to add two tablespoons of orange lemonade or orange marmalade to make a graham cracker crust. All right. There we go. And if you could put the cinnamon in and the graham crackers how much cinnamon. It's one half a teaspoon of cinnamon. All right. And this is Graham. And I wanted a fourth cups of graham cracker because. Did you, crumble these yourself? I sure did. Right. In between everything else, I crumbled them. You stir this top moistened today, did you? He was one of five workers, waterproofing the exterior foundation here. He was the only one of the five actually in the trench when it caved in and filled up, as I said before to his waist. We've been told that all afternoon long he has remained conscious and alert. They've been giving him oxygen. They have been constantly monitoring his blood pressure since there is such heavy pressure on his lower torso, major arteries and veins, that could cause a great deal of damage. They've also spent the afternoon talking to him and trying to keep him relaxed and calm. And they continue to give all the signs that they are going to send a board down, an attachment that hoist him up, then put him on a stretcher, take him to a waiting ambulance and rush him. We are, emerging at this point to shock trauma. Now, we are also told by rescue workers on the scene that they have contacted OSHA, that there were no signs of proper, thorough shoring here in this trench. And what that means is support systems with wood and boards to make sure that around where the construction workers are in this ditch for dirt won't cave in on top of them. That is mandatory, OSHA law. And we were told by rescue workers that there was a makeshift fil A jerry rigged system in here, but nothing thorough. All we know at this point is that he's 21 years old. He's a construction worker. What else? And of course, that standard, the police will not release an individual's name until, they can notify the relatives and let them know how things are so they won't see this on TV and be absolutely shocked. But a couple of his workers talked to us. They evidently tried to pull him out. They heard him screaming because they were going for lunch break, heard his screams, came back, tried to to extricate him. Evidently. Initially the dirt had shifted in and covered just above his knees. The rescue workers arrived, told the coworkers, the other construction workers to back away for fear that more of them would get trapped in in more falling dirt. That's an unusual situation, because you say that he's buried from the waist down, but he's talking still and communicating fine and remaining calm throughout. Exactly. But as long as he is buried from his waist down, sadly he doesn't have the leverage to be able to pull himself out. And indeed, while he was trying to do so, and the construction workers are trying to help him, and the firefighters got involved. Heavy thunderstorms this afternoon certainly didn't help the situation, as rescuers work to shore up the trench and free the worker, Melissa Sander, who has been with us all afternoon. Anja and just a few moments ago continues now her live report on rescue efforts in West Friendship and Howard County. Melissa. Hi again. As we were just telling folks a few moments ago, this 21 year old construction worker who has been trapped since noontime in a 15 foot deep trench alongside of this house where he was doing some waterproofing work. This man is alert. He is conscious. We are told that he is in stable condition and we right now we are watching as rescue workers are trying to pull him out. Rain did delay the scores of rescue workers here, spending the whole afternoon securing the trench so they could pull him out safely without any further caverns. And let's go ahead and show you what happened this afternoon. Because he was only one of five construction workers on the scene who was in the trench around noontime. Oh. All right. We were going to go some tape, but it looks like the construction workers here on the scene, or rather, the rescue workers, keep motioning that they're getting ready to hoist this construction worker up out of the trench where he has been stuck. He is, by the way, buried up to his waist initially when he was working the trench and the cave and started. You might think, why not just go in and pull him out? They're leery that yet more dirt would cave in and cover the man entirely, or even cover over a rescue worker. It looks indeed like they are. They are getting much closer to pulling out this 21 year old man whose name we still have not been given, because police have been trying all day long to contact his family. Melissa? Yes? Can you hear me? All right. Has the man indicated in any way that he's in pain down there? You know, I asked that others there yelling nice and slow right now. I asked that, and he's been talking all afternoon with a female rescue worker who's been a very calming, soothing tones, trying to keep him relaxed. They've been checking his blood pressure, and evidently his vital signs have been fine. That's what we have been told. I can, call over one particular, rescue worker to come tell me if there's any update. If you'll stand by for one moment. Excuse me. Is he all right? He is all right right now. Okay. We are told that. Yes, his vital signs are still good. And you can see there this one man is motioning to pull him up. They are slowly pulling him up. He has been alert and talking all afternoon. As I said, they are having extreme difficulty pulling this guy out of this trench. No doubt they the rain that you mentioned earlier, it did slow them up because they had to bring in, as I understand, pumps. We should bring up that rescue workers tell us that there were no signs of thorough, proper shoring. And what that is, is it's wood. It's a it's like a box that's designed around the construction workers in a ditch to make sure that dirt doesn't cave in. It's a it's a whole set up, and it's mandated by OSHA law. We've been told that OSHA has been contacted to investigate what happened here and whether, this trench was or was not properly secure to protect the construction workers. I did try to talk with one man, with the construction company, and he would not make any comment. It does look like they're getting a lot closer. And that's why we're. We're keeping you folks with us watching. Well, of course we'll get involved in the investigation. OSHA, I believe you mentioned also, now, but of course, the main thing is to get him out as quickly and safely as possible. Exactly. And supporting him, I guess, while trying to to hoist him up without causing, a further, erosion of the ground under him is the biggest problem. They have him. They have him out. James Johnson was a former assistant secretary of the Navy under Nixon, and I'm so proud to have an opportunity to be here just to say a few words about it and to give him a last final salute. And what a great man he is. A final salute, also from the tens of thousands of people who filed silently by the casket of the former president. Still, in the end, he showed that his true character was what was last. I grew up with his time, the times, you know, and with war. And lots of my friends went to that war and didn't come back. And then he stopped the war. I was in love with him then because of that, many who had hope to pay their respects were turned away when the public viewing was cut off some five hours before the funeral. And the line of a hero. These people should have been allowed. After all, this is the kind of loyalty Mr. Nixon enjoyed in his hometown, in the place where he will now be buried. I know the birth place was really important to him. This is the land that his father farmed. He was born in that little white house. As you look at that simple house, I think it reinforces the great American concept that anyone can indeed someday become president. The Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the GMC medical staff present Health Quest important information for healthier living in this edition, surgeon liane talks about early detection of breast cancer. Recently, there has been conflicting information about the need for mammography in women under 50. The fact is, 20% of all breast cancers occur in women under 50. Although the density of breast tissue varies widely, the breast of a younger woman may be more dense, making it difficult to diagnose a developing cancer. But survival and cure rates increased dramatically for women of all ages with early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends mammography at least every two years for women age 40 to 49, and yearly for women 50 and older. Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer, and right now, mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most curable stage.
