Governor Bob Graham has ordered the mandatory evacuation of about 600 ,000 residents and Labor Day tourists from low -lying areas from Tallahassee to St. Petersburg. If the people don't get smart enough to move out now, they're like, I just pulled everything closed off the electric gas and closed up and went. One hundred and seventy five thousand evacuees have packed two hundred and fifteen Red Cross shelters. Several fishing villages are flooded and much of Tarpon Springs, a city of about 7 ,000 people. is under eight feet of water. Well, at this time of year, travel on the nation's roadways can also be hazardous. Since the Labor Day holiday weekend began yesterday afternoon. 115 people have died in accidents across the nation. Three of those were in Maryland. Police are out in full force looking for drunk drivers and speeders. This year, they are using trucks and unusual unmarked cars to conceal their radar equipment. An Adirondack County man has taken the No Drinking and Driving campaign one step further. He's the owner of what's believed to be one of the area's first non -alcoholic nightclubs. It's just a gorgeous night, it's a full moon out there too, so watch it, 66 degrees in Salisbury. The winds are from the northeast, 5 to 10 miles an hour. We'll go straight to the national radar, not much to report locally. and uh... all we can see as far as we're concerned on the east is elena we'll take that on the cloud cover now and show you quickly what's going on with that again elena is staying out it's about fifty miles uh... west of uh... of tampa bay and it's just it's been sitting there for quite a while and as far as our our feelings with acu -weather are it is going to stay there for quite a while and overnight anyway they think it may go right on through maybe towards noon. So we're going to watch it very carefully. We'll keep an eye on it and update it if we need to as we go along. But if it does stay out there and keep gaining strength and not move in the direction that it was, it could come back this way and go on into land and fizzle out. And then maybe we would be affected if it started to crawl up with just some precipitation. So we'll keep an eye on that situation for you.
