See if the amazing Kristin can meet the champagne challenge and meet the woman who really created the Madonna look. As far as I can remember, we met in a nightclub, and she asked me if I would take my shirt off and listen to one of Baltimore's best kept secrets, the musical sounds of Regency. And happy Monday to you. Hey, everyone. Welcome to the show. Tonight, we're visiting Lake Kitten McConaughey. It's in Columbia. It's about this time of the year, 22 years ago that the company announced that they had bought 21mi² in Howard County, which was a 10th of the area of the county. We're going to build a new city. And here is Florida. Yeah, I'm Jeff. I'm Dr. Hamilton. Sporting something new there, aren't you, sport? What do you mean? And growing a mustache, Can you? You may want a good closeup on this. I'd love to. I think I would give it a while. I've never tried, Don. I'm 31 years old, and I want to see if I can grow a mustache. Go for it. And I may shave off in a couple of weeks. Thank you for noticing it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367#t=8.06,125.96"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367/transcript/70798/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah, no problem. You know Chris King, you've heard of him for many months, as a matter of fact. Really? Well, of course, he's a mentalist that has amazed audiences all over the world. Tonight, he is searching for kind of a needle in a haystack. He's looking for a special cork in a winery. Imagine trying to find a needle in a haystack. Then think about this. I'm going to put a cork and a bottle of champagne and hide that bottle somewhere in Korbel. Champagne cellars. Using only his mental powers. The Amazing Kreskin will attempt to find that cork. He's not a magician I hypnotist or an illusionist. And he's not quite a mind reader either. I've never like to use the term mind reader because it really implies that you can look at someone and tell them everything that's in their mind. I consider myself a thought reader because basically if a person concentrates on a target, a specific concept, I can usually pick it up and maybe expand on it. The key is, though, they must concentrate and I must kind of be in tune to them. But I don't use that. I use the term mentalist because everything I do deals with the mind. At his performances, Kreskin will have his paycheck hidden. He says that by reading the thoughts of a committee of four, he will either find the check or he doesn't get paid. After thousands of shows, he's failed only nine times. But I'm looking for something that's a cork. And the scary thing is there are other objects exactly the same. So even my committee has to be very selective in the way they're thinking. And that scares me because what you're literally asking me to do is to find one needle amongst 1000 or 100 or 500.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367#t=126.11,231.6"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367/transcript/70798/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Except in this case, they're their corks. She's going to keep you company. Here's me for you. I was supposed to stay here once. Kraken is tucked away. The cork is marked under the watchful eyes of our committee. Gary Heck, president of Korbel. Robert Stash, the Champagne master, and Herald Duncan, Assistant Vice President. The Cabal. The cork goes into a bottle. And the bottle is labeled identical to the others. The bomb goes into a case, the case onto a pallet. The case with the cork is buried, among other cases, and the pallet will go into one of several warehouses. Christian hasn't left the cellar we left him in. It's all up to his thought. Reading powers now. We will leave him only with our minds. Now, from this moment forth, I'm going to ask you only to concentrate. Talk to me mentally. Reid, I'm going to ask you to take this end of the handkerchief in your right hand, if you will. Now concentrate. The frustrating thing is you can. Does that make sense? Finally, his search is down to a single case of 12 identical bottles. I don't even know if this is the correct box, but don't say anything. Gross question had trouble getting a clear signal from us. He pulled several bottles out of the box before finally settling on one. I can't. I can't turn it. I got to take the handkerchief away. That's it. My God. I. I lost $38 million with 38 million bottles to choose from hidden behind and under other pallets. Amazingly, question has picked the right one. Has your teenage daughter started wearing the white lace and the exposed belly button and the earrings and the bracelets and all that? Well, she has, and she probably will soon. It's all been inspired by the pop star named Madonna. But Madonna did not create this image for herself by herself. She got a little help. And tonight, we'll meet the lady who made Madonna such a fashion rage. Not since the days of Marilyn Monroe has there been a star, be it in television, film or music whose image has stirred so much of America into a frenzied following? Enter Madonna. But. Okay. At all. Admits. But. She's a master at image. All right. Never mind the songs she sings. Madonna wouldn't be Madonna without her exposed tummy. Black lace bustier was hoes, garters scarves, earrings, chains, belts and crucifixes. But Madonna didn't dream this image up all by herself. She had a little help from a friend, French designer Mary Paul. Madonna is really somebody that I can work closely with first because she's in New York and because she's young and she understands fashion as much as I understand music. And that understanding led to a working relationship that is the driving force behind what Madonna wears today. But when Madonna first met Mary Paul, she had some doubts. We met in a nightclub, as far as I can remember.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367#t=650.18,786.28"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367/transcript/70798/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We met in a nightclub, and she asked me if I would take my shirt off because she wanted well, actually, she asked me if I was wearing a nice bra because this guy named Fab Five Freddy was doing this show at the Roxy and he wanted a bunch of girls to come up on the stage and dance around him. But he wanted them all to take the shirt off. And this crazy girl comes up to me and asked me if I had a nice bra. And that's what she wanted to know. And I thought she was out of her mind. Should I wear the yellow vest or the black? It looks better. Okay. Now, Mary Paul is one of Madonna's closest female friends. After their first encounter, they met again at a photo session where Madonna got her first glimpse of Mary Paul's work. But it wasn't just her clothes, the Madonna's eye, it was her specialty accessories. Access was in French means something that you don't really need. It's just an accessory to the clothes that I really think in fashion, you really need it. And for Madonna, it's more than just need. I feel naked without accessories. Mary Paul can claim credit for every rubber bangle, bracelet, necklace and earring Madonna wears. And if you've ever noticed, she wears a lot. What may start as a simple outfit for Madonna under Mary Paul's influence becomes much more. Well, she just starts shoving things on you. You know, she just kind of puts quantities of bracelets on your arm and like, all different colors and and not, you know, not just the rubber to some rhinestones and stuff to change the texture of it. I like to bring I get to bring a lot of my own accessories. I wear scarves in my hair. There are certain things they want me to wear, so it's compromise. But that's good about it. And I have to really change my look a lot for it. But there's something to be said for Madonna's image. It comes from a girl who gleefully wore pink bloomers under her parochial school uniform so she could hang upside down on the monkey bars at recess. She laughed at them, and she's laughing now, but she'll be the first one to tell you not to take her image too seriously. She's simply playing to win. And from the looks of things, she's got it all figured out in a material world. Well, now, Madonna is no dummy. Very soon, she's going to come out with her own line of fashion clothes. Jean Elba and his dog Muttley are a team that will go down in the dog eared pages of history right there with Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. You never see one of them without the other. Muttley looks tame enough on the outside, but inside there is a dog burning with desire for action and adventure. Whatley is the only independent scuba diving K-9 in the world. And it was her idea. One day, while Jean was diving in Key West, he looked over his shoulder to find Muttley on the surface, following him and chasing his air bubbles. So he built her a hole underwater life support system of her own, complete with wetsuit. And today, Muttley has made more than 100 dives. The first time I went in the water, it was it took me ten minutes to get it to training to go down 30ft. It was just like that. To put that a real point. Do you really think she likes all this? It was the the end, really, of the first 13 miles of track laid from Baltimore to the Ellicott Mills. Now, it has been beautifully preserved to help you step back into the romantic past of the railroad. Right now, we're going to meet a fellow who is certainly not considered a romantic. Dennis Hopper has always been thought I was one of Hollywood's anti-heroes. After he starred in the movie Easy Rider, he kind of faded into obscurity because of drugs and alcohol. But he says he straightened himself out. He's starring in a new movie, and he's going to talk to us about the old days. Tell me what? Easy Rider. Released in 1968. The public loved it, and the movie industry was amazed by its success. It told the story of two hippies who scored big with cocaine and then took off across America on their choppers. At a time when movie attendance was at an all time low, the low budget biker flick that reflected the do your own thing attitude of the 60s became one of the biggest hit of the decade. Suddenly Peter Fonda became the prophet of the turndown generation. Jack Nicholson was an overnight success after ten years in B-movies. But the big winner seemed to be director and star Dennis Hopper. He was hailed as the savior of the movie industry. He could do no wrong. He openly used drugs onscreen and off, and he boasted that Easy Rider had made an entire generation aware of cocaine.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367#t=2294.28,2410.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136024/file/252367/transcript/70798/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You've said that Easy Rider introduced cocaine to the American public as far as bring it on the streets. Yeah, well, I you know, I. Peter is talking about let's have these guys on the bikes and, you know, bring marijuana. And I see this too big a load that can't be. And I said, I don't want to get into heroin. So anyway, we brought cocaine in, and suddenly after Easy Rider became a street drug, it was never a street drug before ever. And of course, marijuana was never smoked onscreen without killing a bunch of nurses either. Before Easy Rider. We'd all been in closets smoking marijuana, sometimes being passed around on silver trays in Hollywood, and cocaine was piled on like, you know, sugar on trays and so on. And it became just a thing. I have I have no guilt about it. But but there it is. Once a clean cut young actor in such films as Giant and Rebel Without a Cause, paper dough headfirst into the freaked out, rebellious drug scene he has helped to create. Soon the excesses started to get to him. I mean, I used to joke about drugs and everybody wants to know about how much drugs I use. And I said I only use drugs so I can cover up the fact that I'm an alcoholic. But I never really thought I had a problem, you know, which is the problem with most alcoholics is denial. The excesses didn't matter to Hollywood. It couldn't wait to see Hopper's next film. So fresh from his Easy Rider success, he was given free rein to make the last movie on location in Peru. But the stories that came back from location shocked even the with it Hollywood crowd. You were on drugs? I was using cocaine. Although the last movie won best film at the Venice Film Festival. Universal considered it so embarrassing that it was shelved after a very limited run. Hopper had fallen from glory, and by 1972, he was spending most of his time in Taos, New Mexico, teaching filmmaking and indulging his habits. That went on for over a decade. You had said that you you had lost your mind, that you were having hallucinations. I was hearing voices. I was hearing people being killed in the next room, friends of mine and recognizable voices. And. And there wasn't even another room. Okay. You know, I mean, it was just. I was totally, totally out of my mind. And cocaine is a terrible, terrible drug, and so is alcohol, you know, and it's when it's abused. The way I did alcohol was a problem. For how long and when? When did you decide to get rid of it? Well, I drank all my life. I mean, from the time I was 18 on, you know, I never considered it a problem. I just drank all day long. Then when I stopped drinking, I started using cocaine. And I used cocaine. Like, I drank beer all day, and I just used it all the time. And I didn't drink.
