The search for the men who shot and killed a pizza delivery man Wednesday night is over. Both suspects have turned themselves in. Ron Mattes joins us now with shocking details of his exclusive interview with the trigger man. Ron, he talked to you today. That's certainly one of the most dramatic events that I have ever witnessed as a reporter. And it unfolded just a couple of hours ago on Virginia Avenue in northwest Baltimore. Eyewitness News got a call earlier today from the family of one of the suspects. They wanted to make a public appeal for his surrender. And later, they called us back to say he was ready to turn himself in. 23 year old Joseph Benjamin turned himself in at the home of the second suspect, 17 year old Samuel Small, who also surrendered. Both are charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of 23 year old pizza delivery man Igor Berenstein Wednesday night. Joseph Benjamin told Eyewitness News he was the trigger man. Did you shoot that young man? Yes. Why not? Because it looked like he was going for like he had a gun in this car, and everybody kept saying, shoo, shoo, shoo. And I got scared and I shot him. As Samuel was consoled by his mother. City police converged on my house on Virginia Avenue to make the dramatic arrest. I said, going to know. And he kept on not giving it. He wouldn't give me nothing. So he just went to the court. And when he looked to the car, he would reach the circuit. And when we reached this corner, somebody in the back and he kept saying, shoot him, shoot him, shoot him. And I didn't want I was I was doing it this this scam or something. And when I shot the girls a pop up and then I just ran. Samuel waited for the police. He appeared to be praying as he was hugged by his mother. The suspects would soon be led away in handcuffs. Joseph Benjamin tells Eyewitness News how he shot and killed a man. Hello, everybody. I'm Pat Warren. Richard Share has the night off. As we first reported on Eyewitness News at 630, the two suspects in the shooting death of a pizza delivery man surrendered to police today. It was a dramatic and emotional scene as one of those suspects told the weekend team's Ron Matz what happened last Wednesday night. Oh. What? 23 year old Joseph Benjamin turned himself in at the home of a second suspect, 17 year old Samuel Small, who also surrendered. Both are charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of 23 year old pizza delivery man Edgar Berenstein Wednesday night. Joseph Benjamin told Eyewitness News he was the trigger man. Did you shoot that young man? Yes. Why? I know because it looked like he was going for like he had a gun in this car and everybody kept saying, shoot him. She will shoot him. And I got scared and I just shot him. As Samuel was consoled by his mother. City police converged on a house in Virginia Avenue to make the dramatic arrest. As family and friends stood by trying to comprehend the scene. Joseph Benjamin described how he fired the fatal shots.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115815/file/219683#t=2030.78,2166.64"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115815/file/219683/transcript/62510/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I just told you, give me can you give me the money? And when we reached the setting, somebody in the back and he kept saying, shoot him, shoot him, shoot him. And then I didn't want I was I was doing it this this scam or something. This afternoon's cloudy day turned stormy by evening and strong winds left some Baltimoreans remembering the storms that swept through our area just a few weeks ago. Things were a mess in Carroll Park. Several trees were uprooted and branches thrown around down on Wicomico Street behind the MTA headquarters. The wind was strong enough to pull several bricks off the roof of a building. The storms also wiped out power to about 16,000 customers. Crews are out tonight still trying to get everybody's lights back on. Well, tomorrow, bring us an encore performance of today's stormy weather. Well, the only way to find out is to go to Dr. Bob. Well, Pat, you can feel the humidity in the air and that's one of the components for severe thunderstorms. And that humidity is going to be here tomorrow. Our forecast for tomorrow will include the prospect of some heavy duty thunderstorms during the afternoon. Wake up tomorrow. However, it'll be hazy, humid. Well, there ain't no sunshine when they're gone for baseball fans. It's a boo hoo of a kind of a day. We're going to go now with Chris Lilley and find out what's going on with the strike. Well, not a whole lot pattern with the both sides of this thing. The owners and the players with huge war chests. They're prepared to sit the entire thing out and put the two sides so far apart. It looks like it could be a long one, but miracles can happen. Baseball has been shut down for two days and there's no telling when the two sides will get back to the negotiating table. There was activity today, though, as both parties met separately with representatives of the federal mediation Service. But after his session with the feds, players union rep Donald Fehr made it sound like including them was not a sure path to getting the players back on the baseball playing field. What's going to happen? But maybe with some luck, they'll be able to suggest something that eventually makes a difference. Well, today's baseball players strike centers on multimillion dollar paychecks, as Chris was just saying, and proposed salary caps. Some players from the past got together to remember the days when the only strike called was at the plate. The Negro League Ball Players Association met today in Baltimore. They were here to remember the past and discuss some business issues. But the league's acting president, Wilmar Fields, says he's as disappointed about the strike as anybody else. It hurt me as much as it hurt anybody because I look forward to looking at ball games on TV and especially when the team that you like that's in the running in 1 or 2 spot. And I enjoy looking at I enjoy looking at all sports. So I'm hurt. I'm hurt because, Field says when he played professional ball in the 1930s, the players weren't making millions. Most Negro League players earned about $125 a month. The baseball strike has put one Baltimore bartender in a bit of a pickle, so he's decided to take a stand on the issue or a seat. There's 78 is what we have here, as we noted before. 80 degrees in many locations around the Baltimore metro area. So it's been a very warm and continues to be a humid evening. 82 at Salisbury. Not that much cooler out in the mountains. It will open up to the national radar. We're not really showing any showers of any consequence at all on the local radar. Around 10:00 or so, you folks in Baltimore County, above the city, saw a shower and it's now moved on over into Harford County. Generally, the mid-Atlantic area where we are is clear. However, this is the thing we're concerned about for tomorrow. Major league subtropical high pressure off the coast. This is a summertime Bermuda high. It's one of the subtropical highs. Clockwise circulation makes it very effective at pumping up the warm and humid air coming from the source region in source region in the Gulf of Mexico. But what's happening up here? So Canadian air surging down across the Great Lakes right now. When those two come together, we're seeing it already even at this late hour of the night. And that's the reason why we think tomorrow afternoon we will have humidity, we will have some sunshine to trigger thunderstorms. But with that front acting as the real impetus for those those thunderstorms could end up being more on the severe side than what we saw today. So make your plans accordingly. With that in mind, if you're headed out in the bay. Early in the day, there'll be hazy sunshine, but then that thunderstorm threat later in the day. Southwest winds 15 knots kicking up to 30, maybe even greater than that. And heavy thunderstorms, 2 to 4 foot chop on the bay. It's going to be a windy day on the bay. Water temperature at 78 degrees. Down at the ocean, it's going to be a warm day to be at the beach. Air temperatures should top out at 90 degrees. But again, later in the day, look for thunderstorms rolling on through across the eastern shore. Surf temperature these days, it'll cool you off at 70 degrees for the rest of the overnight. Now we've got a few clouds around. But the thing that's really so notable tonight is the humidity is going to be a sultry overnight temperature bottoming out only in the mid 70s for tomorrow. Then we'll start out with hot and humid conditions, hazy morning sunshine. But then look for those heavy afternoon thunderstorms and that could occur any time after noontime. So throughout the entire afternoon tomorrow, look for thunderstorm threat. 92 degrees will be our Sunday high. And now once that cool air pushes on through Monday and Tuesday, promise to be delightful days look to Monday. Just barely getting to 80 degrees. We'll be in the 70s with nice humidity warming up a little bit.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115815/file/219683#t=3189.37,3281.08"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115815/file/219683/transcript/62510/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Tuesday then August returns, humidity and thunderstorms by the end of the five day period.
