Iraq says it's brought the government of Kuwait to its knees. Strong reactions to the invasion are coming in from around the world. The Iraqis say they toppled the government and have taken control of the capital of Kuwait City. Heavy casualties are also reported. Hundreds of troops and tanks led by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein rolled into Kuwait overnight, seizing government buildings and communication centers. Iraq launched the attack just hours after talks broke down in a dispute over an oil area. Morning around 530 near the city. We could hear long range artillery and then there was sporadic street fighting, machine gun fire and artillery shells, mainly at the palace of the mayor, which is just across the street from the hotel and the American embassy. Kuwait's emir has reportedly fled to Saudi Arabia. Now the U.S. embassy is surrounded by tanks. There's no decision yet on evacuating any of the 4000 Americans who live in Kuwait. The U.N. Security Council met in an emergency session this morning and swiftly condemned Iraq's invasion, demanding an unconditional withdrawal of troops and immediate negotiations between the two countries. President Bush has also come down hard on Iraq today. The president signed an order early today freezing control of Iraqi assets in the United States and blocking almost all imports from that oil rich country like the United Nations. Bush also called for withdrawal of Iraqi forces, but he said there's been no talk yet of military intervention. The Kuwaiti ambassador to Washington pleaded for U.S. help. I did not ask for Soviet assistance in the past until we were turned down by the U.S. at the beginning. Let me make that very clear. Have you our friends? I've always been in the United States. Our friends and allies have always been in the Western powers. And on that level, we have conducted ourselves. We don't stand a chance if we don't get aid from our friends. The country, as I said before, is already under complete occupation. The United States strongly condemns the Iraqi military invasion of Kuwait, and we call for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all the Iraqi forces. There is no place for this sort of naked aggression in today's world. Iraqi President Saddam Hussein says he moved on Kuwait at the request of revolutionaries who had overthrown the Kuwaiti government. But Kuwait and the United Nations says that's not true. The impact of what's happening today in the Middle East is likely to be felt by all of us and soon. The Persian Gulf is one of the main sources of oil in the United States, and already the price of a barrel of oil is climbing up $2 just this morning. Some dealers say consumers could be feeling the impact in the form of higher prices at the pump as early as this weekend. There's going to be an immediate impact of of at least $0.10, and I'm afraid it's going to be much higher than that. Why? Supply and demand. The supply is going to be cut and the demand is going to be much greater. Officials ruled the death a suicide, but neighbors disagreed and demanded a full scale investigation. The grand jury postponed a final ruling on boy's death. A major cause for concern at Morgan State University now shows some signs of abating with the construction of a new building. Governor Schaefer and a whole host of local elected officials today broke ground in a new eight for a new eight story dormitory that will soon have space for 600 Morgan students. It's actually already under construction at the south end of the campus. And its speedy completion comes after a student task force staged at least one sitting at the state house demanding something be done. And the moral of the story is, if we all work together, if we all work together and forget that negative can't do it, let's postpone it to next year. That's the great one that I just despised when people said, let's wait until next year. It proves our point and it shows that we need a greater, greater effort shown by the state of Maryland or with, say, by the governor's office itself. I'm glad to see the building of the dormitory and a groundbreaking ceremony, but I hope to see more construction going on and more visible means of support from the state of Maryland to Morgan State University. His job is to meter the number of planes coming in and out of our airports. It's getting harder because headache usually is the amount of traffic that shows up at one time. That's part of the problem of getting to the point where perhaps you have squeezed everything out that you possibly can. Pilots like Alice Rogers are already feeling the squeeze with pressure to move more jets in and out. Airports like SFO are literally being forced to double up. You're watching what's known as a parallel landing, Two planes coming into the runways side by side. This is the view from my plane. I was cleared to make a parallel approach. The maneuver is critical to SFO because it allows the airport to double the number of landings. It pretty much cuts almost in half the amount of aircraft we can accept, which increases delays, requires a lot of holding and the fixes and that can back up flights. As far as Denver. One reason you may have had to wait hours on a flight back here to the Bay Area. And that's in addition to the safety issue. We're going to become saturated to the point where we're going to have to break the bank and build more airports and we're going to have to build more runways. That's one answer already being proposed at San Francisco Airport. A second runway built out on the bay. It would be far enough away from the existing runways to allow safe parallel landings in any weather. Something airport officials say will be critical in the next ten years. Tonight, we have team coverage of the latest sparks to fly in the volatile Middle East, including a look at how we could all pay the price for the invasion of oil rich Kuwait. We begin with the reactions of President Bush and other world leaders to the latest fighting. It began early this morning as Iraq's powerful army crossed the border into Kuwait. Troops took over all government buildings in the capital, forcing Kuwait's Amir to flee the country. The invasion follows weeks of tension between the two countries, with Iraq accusing Kuwait of stealing oil from a disputed border area. But that accusation means next to nothing to world leaders who were quick to condemn the assault. And we call for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all the Iraqi forces. Needless to say, we view this situation with the utmost gravity. We remain committed to take whatever steps are necessary to defend our longstanding vital interest in the Gulf. The president took action almost immediately banning U.S. imports of Iraqi products, including oil and freezing Iraq's financial assets in the U.S.. This afternoon, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher joined the president in his condemnation of what's being called naked aggression on the part of Iraq. Though the Middle East is thousands of miles away, the effects of the assault are being felt right here in Baltimore. If Iraq succeeds in its takeover attempt, it will control one quarter of the world's oil supply. Well, Kuwait may be a long way from Maryland, but the ripple effect of today's invasion is already being felt here. Our team coverage continues with Alex to matrix reports. Iraq's actions will have all of us paying more at the gas pump. Those who have seen troubles in the Middle East stretch to their gas tanks before know what to expect from up for Gozo because there is little doubt the price of gasoline will be going up and fast. There's going to be an immediate impact of of at least $0.10, and I'm afraid it's going to be much higher than that. Away from the pumps downtown, where big money changes hands over oil in the stock market, there is little doubt that higher gasoline prices are on the way. The average consumer is going to see a price rise and fairly shortly. They have a higher oil price being charged right now. Commodity price spot prices are up three bucks today. That will hit the pump. It could begin hitting independent dealers who sell non brand name gasoline within the next day or two. Major chains may be slower to raise prices because of reserves. But it is at the truck stop where increases could hurt the economy most. This is a nation that depends upon trucks for everything. And higher fuel prices could fuel higher inflation. It tells me we're all in big trouble. All Americans who drive and all Americans who eat now, Americans who wear clothes are in big trouble, but only if Iraq continues to force prices up. And unknown. But then no one really knew the power of the Middle East until we all lined up for gasoline in the 1970s. Experts say there won't be lines because of today's invasion. But drivers are still nervous. I hope it doesn't get back to where we're waiting in line or there's no shortage. And facing higher prices is better than facing no gas at all. We don't have to like it, but hey, good advice. Maryland's Harte Miller Island has been caught in a web of controversy for years. In the early 80s, the state built a dike there to dispose of dredging material. And as Andrea Koppel reports, now, the state's allowing chromium contaminated sludge to be dumped there. Looking at this side of Hart Miller Island, on a beautiful day like today, it's not hard to understand why hundreds of nature lovers and boating enthusiasts come here every day. It's when you see the other side of Hart Miller, the sluice pipe where 32 million gallons a day of sludge is regularly dumped into the back river. The critics of this dike say things begin to look a lot less desirable. And according to those same critics, this story can only get worse because beginning sometime next week, Allied Chemical Company will start removing 140,000yd³ of contaminated chromium sludge from the inner harbor and will deposit it here on Hart Miller Island. This is not a dump site and give us an opportunity to have a public hearing because they are landfilling this material. The governor has made a big to do out of the fact that they're going to reduce toxics in the Chesapeake Bay when they're bringing this material of toxic material over from Allied Chemical. You know, taking out a home improvement contract requires a bunch of negotiations and then coming up with the money and signing it away. Well, as the couple you are about to meet found out, getting it in writing doesn't necessarily mean getting the work done. This was their first home and it was picture perfect. I didn't really like the color scheme too much. This contract promised a kitchen makeover for a price they could afford, provided they went out and bought their own appliances. They did. And their kitchen was packed with boxes of them waiting for the contractor to arrive. Instead, they got this letter saying that the contract was canceled because the agreed upon price was too low. My husband and I were totally astonished that no one did come because we had all the plants sitting and ready to be put in place. You may be thinking that a contract is a contract and that once it's signed, like it or not, both parties are bound. But when the English has asked us to look at their contract, we found a problem. A problem that could have meant no deal. Although Mrs. English signed the contract as the purchaser, it was only a salesman who signed for the company and the contract specifically said it must be cosigned by an officer before it was valid. But we got the parties together for more negotiation and this was the result. The exact kitchen that the English is wanted and all the appliances in place. You see a very happy customer. I am completely satisfied and my husband is too. And I think we're going to have it for many years. It looks like they are to our thanks to the contractor, which really very quickly recognized the problem. It was just a mutual error on both sides. Got it. And quickly corrected it. And tonight, we begin a little two part series on the career of Jim Palmer by taking you back to where it all began. Smack dab in the middle of the decade of the 1960s. There was 1965. The Beatles were the hottest group on the charts. Lyndon Johnson was in the White House. Willie Shoemaker was in the winner's circle and Muhammad Ali was still Cassius Clay. This was the year that Jim Palmer made his debut in the big leagues. At the time, he wasn't sure just how long he'd be able to stay. When I first came to the Orioles in 1965, it was day to day. I was making $7,000 and all I wanted to do was stay there for 90 days because that meant that I got the progressive bonus and I got a $7,000 bonus which doubled my salary. So my first thought to the major leagues was, Can I stay here for 90 days? If all Jim Palmer wanted was to hang around for 90 days, then surely his success at the Major league level must have caught even him by surprise. 20 years and 268 wins later, Palmer had established himself as one of the most dominant players of his era.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136108/file/252535#t=4372.73,4476.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136108/file/252535/transcript/70849/annotation/42","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"For his career, Jim Palmer won the Cy Young Award three times. He is one of the few pitchers in big league history never to give up a Grand Slam, and he is the only man ever to win at least one World Series game in three different decades. By anyone's measure, he had a Hall of Fame career. And yet, when it finally came to an end, Palmer was reluctant to leave. I still think I can pitch. You know, I have the desire to do that. But I'm going to leave. Thank you very much for coming. But you thought you could still play. I wanted to try and see if I could still play. Yeah. I mean, I went to the people that I felt the most comfortable with, and that's Cal Ripken Senior and and Ellie Hendrix. Because objectively, it's real hard to tell whether you can still pitch when you're 38 and you've had some more problems and things aren't going your way. But when I would go to them and they would say, yeah, you can still get people out. But the bottom line is, could you do it here in Baltimore? And since I couldn't do it and wasn't get the opportunity, I just figured that was enough. Do you still think you could get people out? Probably. In his closing argument, Marion Barry's attorney, Kenneth Mundy, admitted his client was a cocaine abuser but implied the government was making too much out of it. Mundy called efforts to get Barry a case of using a sledgehammer to kill a fly. Mundy may be right about that, but it doesn't matter. You can make a case that the government spent huge amounts of money, that they invaded Barry's privacy with that horrendous videotape and that they spent too much time and manpower for a relatively small time user and it still doesn't matter. Marion Barry is the mayor in a town brought to its knees by narcotics. He's a man sworn to fight that narcotics traffic. A man thousands of people turned to was the leader in that fight. Instead, by his own lawyer's admission, he went over to the other side. And that's the distinction that this jury must make, that while they may not like the prosecutor's methods or their aggressiveness or their arrogance, that's not the issue here. The issue is Mayor Barry's abuse of drugs. And even his own lawyer couldn't fake his way out of that one. I'm Michael, Alaska. Thank you, Michael. Iraqi forces took over the tiny nation of Kuwait last night, and that's how quickly the U.S. and other nations are responding to the invasion. With 3000 Americans in Kuwait and the threat of an oil crisis, President Bush says he's not ruling out any options for response. We call for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all the Iraqi forces. There is no place for this sort of naked aggression in today's world. However, Bush still has not agreed to Kuwait's request for military assistance. That could change. With word tonight, invading Iraqi troops rounded up six American oil field workers near the border. Governor Bill Clements says the environmental effects of Saturday's accident have been greatly exaggerated. Earlier today, Clements toured the bay by helicopter and then decided to cancel a plan to use oil eating microbes on the spill. But when other state officials protested, the oil magnate turned governor backed down, agreeing to allow limited use of the microbes. Clements optimism was offset by a state health department ban on bay fishing, which went into effect today. Here in Maryland, the Department of Natural Resources is literally drawing the line when it comes to rock fishing. Under the department's new plan. Commercial fishermen would be allowed to fish for rockfish in parts of the bay that are off limits to sports fishermen. As Little Dale reports, the proposal has some crying discrimination. Edward Hutton's tackle Barbershop is the kind of play sport fishermen swap fish stories. Only now the one that got away refers to all rockfish in the Upper Bay. That because of a proposal by the Department of Natural Resources that would give commercial fishermen exclusive rights to the endangered fish anywhere north of the Sparrows Point old Chester line. The DNR says the move will save the fish. Sport fishermen say it will kill them the way the DNR is proposing the new regulations, it's leaving us out in the cold. More to speak.
