Better news because it's the Space Shuttle Challenger and it's off. It's on its 10th flight and in less than three years, like many other liftoffs, this one, eight this morning, picture perfect. Commander Vance Brand and four other crewmen are on board. The highlight of the mission, a walk in space without a safety rope. Also new this time, a landing at Cape Canaveral instead of California in eight days. In public schools across the country, it's not a new problem, but it's one that just won't go away. Some 57 public school buildings in the state contain asbestos products capable of releasing fibers linked to lung cancer. That according to the Evening Sun paper. Now the paper quotes a state education official saying the asbestos in 35 of those schools is at hazardous levels. Some new federal regulations out today on the cancer -causing chemical EDB or ethylene dibromide. EDB can no longer be used to fight insect infestation in stored grain or in grain milling machinery. Today's emergency ban doesn't cover EDB used in citrus crops that are being imported. A ruling on that is expected in a few weeks. Thanks for the umbrella, Richard, is keeping these two little kids nice and dry. What was some big doings down here right in front of War Memorial Plaza between here and the actual War Memorial this morning as a giant mechanized stork landed right in the middle of Gay Street and started the delivery process as the case may be. You see the nurses standing there waiting eagerly for Philip and Perry Pothole to be delivered to expectant fathers and mothers throughout the city of Baltimore. It's part of the pothole campaign as we mentioned for a $35 donation this year. Not only do you get a pothole filled with love and asphalt, your name in the paper and a valentine sent to your sweetie, but you also get one of Don's dolls, Philip or Perry pothole. And this is going to be quite a campaign. There were network news crews here. The pothole campaign itself of course last year received a major amount of press nationwide and this year it appears it's going to be pretty much the same way we have a full story are the first presentations of Peter and Perry Pothole to citizens of the City of Baltimore tonight at 6 on Eyewitness News. Now, let's get to the reason for the umbrella, which of course was protecting the kids. Hey folks, it is raining. It was in a forecast. We didn't think it would happen this earlier. Plus, we really thought it would be just a little bit warmer. Alright, let's take a look at our current conditions. Right now on TV Hill, it's cloudy and rainy outside. It's temperatures still in the, just in the upper 30s. Winds are calm right now. Humidity, 86%. Barometer is 30 .09 and holding steady. You'll have a high tide at Fort McHenry. Your next one will be this near 830 low tide tomorrow morning sunsets tonight around 530 p .m. all right let's take a look at sky I the radar rain shower activity now moving over the entire area and it looks like the forecast we had yesterday which was for a period extended period of two or three hours of rain shower activity is gonna come true I would expect if you have to go out this afternoon you may not want to wear your pumps and take an umbrella with you it looks like it's going to be a semi wet afternoon as far as the temperatures I'm really hoping with baited breath and fingers crossed they get up as high as we're going to predict. but it's a little raw outside right now. Here's your Accu with a forecast today. We'll call for it to be cloudy. Rain this afternoon. It's afternoon to me right now. So we'll look for a high of 50. I'll hopefully make it there. Tonight it's gonna be another, it's gonna be kind of rainy. Watch for patchy fog to develop. Hit this frontal system, bring in the rain. Moves out of the area. Overnight low tonight, 40 degrees. Tomorrow, we may have some more clouds move into the area. There is a chance, it's not improbable, that we'll have some shower activity tomorrow afternoon. Look for a high tomorrow to be in the upper 30s or lower 40s. It's been a wild day down here at City Hall and probably the beginning of another very, very successful campaign to get some city problems fixed using private funds.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144430/file/266934#t=737.03,923.13
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144430/file/266934/transcript/77126/annotation/32
Speaker 4: Alright Marty, I must tell you, you look terrific and I must compliment you again on the umbrella.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144430/file/266934#t=925.54,929.04
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144430/file/266934/transcript/77126/annotation/33
Speaker 10: Uh, Richard, thank you very much. How do you tell? For one thing, you can get a body composition assessment. The point is to find out how much fat you have compared to the rest of your body. After weighing, some machines, a computer, and an operator will determine the volume of air left in your lungs. So they'll know how much displacement will be taking place. Then you climb into a tank of warm water, sit on a seat attached to a scale, expel as much air from your lungs as possible, then under you go, completely. Everywhere east of the Mississippi Valley will be below freezing and quite cold, with the exception of southern Florida. Even northern Florida will have some frost by Tuesday morning. And for us, looks like we could get down to zero Monday night. Right now, our current conditions look like this. Under cloudy, occasionally some light rain in the Baltimore area. Most of the rain is now just to the east of the city and to the south of the area. 41, the winds are calm, the humidity way up there at 96%. The Brommer 2983. Falling still, the air quality was 53 this afternoon, put us in the moderate rain to tides tomorrow. Center -eye, 711 sets at 530. Not a very pleasant night in the city, a lot of fog around, and some pretty moderate rainfalls earlier this evening. We picked up about a quarter to a half an inch of rain today in most places. Kind of a dreary night. Looks like we're on the runway of Jerry Turner's back lawn. This is where he lands his plane. You know, you've got the boat in one side and the plane in the other. Let's take a look. At our National Radar summary tonight, rain along the East Coast. And it's all rain from, actually, from Maine all the way down to our region off the Atlantic coast. And this is a secondary system of rain that's developing right now. And moving to the north and northeast, it appears that once this system moves out, it'll make way for this next rainmaker, which will come out from the southwest and just past the Baltimore area. We may see some rain tomorrow afternoon. Eastern shore looks like a definite chance of rain tomorrow. And then behind that. This is the beginning of the cold front that we see out in the Midwest. Here's the rain activity in our local region. It's moving out to the east very slowly. So you folks in Delaware and eastern parts of the state will continue to get rain for the next several hours, at least, here in Baltimore and from Baltimore West, just some light drizzle and some fog overnight. Let's take a look at our state map, excuse me, the rain here in the east, mile to the south, almost 60 degrees. In fact, in Oceana, Virginia, which is near Norfolk, it's 60 degrees right now, 59 down in Norfolk. 45 in DC, 37 out to our west in Morgantown and Martinsburg and also in Harrisburg. Winds tomorrow out of the west, 6 to 12 miles an hour. Now, look at that cloud cover. Here is the first funnel system that's going to go through, and this is not the cold one. The second one is way up here in the northern United States entering the country right now. That's going to head south and east. Here's all that mess here in the southeast tonight. That's going to head up our way also. So look for a cloudy weekend. Most of the time we'll be covered with clouds. Thanks for watching! Here's that next cold front, very, very cold air mass, high pressure over Canada, plunging southward. The entire eastern half of the country is going to get really, really cold Sunday night and into Monday. Let's take a look at our forecast. Cloudy tomorrow, some rain mostly east of our region, 47 the high, 40 some showers or flurries likely tomorrow night, excuse me, on Sunday night, partly sunny and partly sunny for Tuesday and Monday, and 21 the high for Monday, 18 and 27, a high of only 18 on Tuesday. could get down to zero. Clouds and mild, 40. Drive carefully, have a nice weekend.
