Go on now. Talking to her? Yes. I just look at. But you. Shadow. Just introduce yourself and tell us where you're from. Okay. My name's Kelly Mader from Connecticut, where I've lived for most of my life with the stretches in Maine and New Hampshire as well. Most of the water you do on the prime and the cook or as we say, steward. A lot of folks start off. Jump start on the boat. But here have a different story. You came on board at a different time. Tell us what happened. I ended up getting a call from John Miles, our skipper back in. End of November and the commitments that I had at home wasn't able to join the boat right away, and I ended up compromising. So I joined the boat on the day before Christmas, which set my own holiday schedule a little bit topsy turvy, but I ended up jumping right on going shopping. And then the next day I stuffed a £26 turkey for the crew. What was your Christmas like at the Pride of Baltimore? It was great. We were in Tampa at that point in a place called Harbor Island, and it was really a lovely marina. We had large crowds come and see the boat and. I was impressed with the galley space. It was about three times the size of the boat that I'd been working on previously. And I found it to be a really fun experience. Just putting a holiday dinner for a bunch of people that I just met. A great way to make friends. Yeah. And we ended up having a small Christmas tree down below and people had put other decorations up and folks had their present sent to them by their families.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114042/file/216781#t=19.75,253.7"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114042/file/216781/transcript/61555/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So it was very homey. White. Right. Can. People at home. You've got a lot of experience. Talk to the coach wouldn't look so much. Tell me why you do what you like so much and what makes it completely different from any experience that anybody out there is never had? Well, certainly being on a moving platform adds a new dimension to the cooking experience. This code is still undergoing several genesis in terms of doing the actual finished construction and carpentry, and most boats have things in place called Skittles, which are pieces of wood or metal that help keep things from sliding around. And those have all been installed yet. So I'll find by making something relatively simple, like a batch of cornbread or cake that I have to run from one side of the galley, back and forth, back and forth bowls or sliding up and down on the counters. And I've often had things just fly right off and splatter all over the. It's been a learning process to make the galley both workable and safe. Also. I'm not being thrown around. I have watched the movie, you know, just like. There's got to be some. Extra satisfaction knowing the work that everybody's doing for yourself, this book. And then when you do something that works, it really. Yeah. That's got to be can do for sure. I think I think the crew definitely relies on having three good meals a day, and it definitely could be a big morale booster, especially when we're on a long slog. Certainly on our trip from Miami to San Juan, which was seven and a half days of windward slamming was beating. It was real helpful having a little treats tucked away. And as I showed you earlier, I had candy stuffed underneath my bunk and I had to hide it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114042/file/216781#t=254.27,366.03"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114042/file/216781/transcript/61555/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Otherwise it would all have been devoured in the first couple of days. But it definitely helps if I have time and the seeds are coming up, I'll bake cookies and cakes and things like that. Kelly, What's one thing? Yeah. Yeah. Just keep that right to keep it. Tell your mom or tell the moms out there. There's something about this cookie business on the that you can't possibly appreciate, Mom. Let me tell you about the time for you know, here's the most difficult thing about it. I think it still drives me a little bit crazy. Okay. One of the things that happens in a boat is you have this thing called an angle of heel. So when you're in heavy weather, the boat will be listing one way or the other. And anytime you go to bake a cake, the batter is even the slightest bit soupy. Your cake will end up looking like a relief map of China or some. Results are inconsistent, to say the least, but they provide the crew with some amusement. And certainly it's a challenge to get things to level out. As a newcomer to the crew, what's the thing that you find most impressive about this collection of people? Definitely. I'd say the fact that people are coming from such a diverse background, but the one thing they have in common is a love of the sea and a sense of adventure. Many people just are the type that will pack up their bag and just go off somewhere on the drop of a hat and. They all have a desire to learn new things and experience new things, and they work really well together as a team. The. The pride of Baltimore is. What feeling you get when you go out and you're in the port like San Juan, you know that all the people are coming on. They're asking questions about the city of Baltimore and the people of Baltimore, Maryland. What how do you feel about that? What role does that play for the crew? But for me personally, I'm not being a marilyn native. It's been a learning experience. Obviously, Chesapeake Bay is a very rich area and fortunate enough to spend some time. Much more familiar with Connecticut's maritime heritage. But it's been exciting to me seeing the response of people in our foreign ports that are from Maryland or they just vacation there and they're really excited about the program. Seeing what we're doing. Rocco. I get my galley? Fun. Like I've done some television. You wake up again? What's the problem? John, easily the tiniest person on this boat. How is it that you went up there at this particular time? Our ship just came on and I was asked to see her. A lot of times I maneuver in and out of harbors, but a lot of times I don't. For some reason on the Gulf Coast, when there's any emergencies, I'm designated to take the helm. Possibly because I'm so stressed and I'm not sure that. Maybe he likes the way I steer. So I have been lucky. I'd love to see when you call us in the office for how you do that. But you're probably not going to call the office and say.
