Eight people have been hospitalized in Baltimore as the result of an accident involving an MTA bus and a pickup truck. The accident occurring around three this afternoon. There were seven people on the MTA bus at the time of the accident at Lafayette Avenue on Calhoun Street. All seven were hospitalized, including two children and the driver of the bus, Richard Harrison, complained of shoulder and knee injuries. The bus was heading for Fells Point when it suddenly collided broadside with a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck was apparently traveling alone at the time, and according to preliminary police reports, he apparently ran a stop sign here at the intersection. Apparently, the MTA bus was traveling. Avenue. The intersection at Calhoun and Tropical Alley failed to stop at a stop sign here. Warning charges be placed. I can't say in all probability, it depends on the investigation. The driver of the pickup truck was trapped in his vehicle for a while and firefighters had to use crowbars to free him. He appeared to be the most seriously injured of those hospitalized. For hospitals that they could all go to university and Lutheran University prior to university. I think five at the moment. And somebody seriously injured a large cut on the head of the driver of the car, as best I can tell you at this time. Frank In the Mideast, Israeli warships have lifted their blockade of the Beirut harbor, where PLO guerillas are on their way to other Arab countries. The reason for the blockade was an attempt by the PLO to take jeeps with them to Tunisia, their final destination. An Israeli officer said the ship sailed on and the jeeps will be dropped off in Cyprus. The Israelis will also allow women and children to leave with the PLO guerrillas after it was discovered that women and children were wearing fatigues as a way of escaping from Lebanon with the PLO. Here in Baltimore, the deputy PLO observer at the United Nations says the evacuations of the PLO from war torn Lebanon will have little impact on the organization. Dr. Hatem Hosseini says the Palestinians regard the evacuation as a victory. They will simply reorganize themselves elsewhere. You know, as you know, it is like a government in exile. Dr. Husseini is the guest speaker at a Palestine Lebanese fund raiser here in Baltimore. A controversy is also brewing right here in Baltimore. A city comptroller, Hyman Pressman, is challenging Mayor Schaefer to a debate over who should control the city's pension funds. Schaefer says the funds, which are worth a $600 million, aren't returning a high enough yield. Pressman says the funds are handled by professional money managers, and the yield is down because of the economy. But overall, he says the funds are doing well over the past four years. Pressman says the rates or the fund's rate of return has been double that of public pension systems. And Governor Harry Hughes is also catching some flak this week in a supporter of Harry McGuirk is claiming that Hughes glossed over an investigation of Transportation Secretary Lowell Bridwell. A federal judge says there are several questions surrounding Broadwell's role as a consultant on the Westway Road project in New York State. Well, two years ago, authorities at College Park decided to crack down on students who cheated with the help of students and faculty. The crackdown is working. The university says a record 37 students were suspended or expelled this year for cheating. They say that shows a greater willingness on the part of honest students to report cheating. The issue at a school here in Baltimore is not cheating. It's art. Actually, the question is whether it's art or not. A modern art sculpture has two sides of Baltimore Hill upset. They say the colors clash with the historic character of their Bolton Hill neighborhood. I think it's a little overpowering for our neighborhood here. I think it's totally inappropriate. It's rather atrocious and be a good opinion of it. It's like an air traffic safety hazard. We have no reports of its reflecting any low flying planes, of course. But then the structure was only recently constructed and the sculpture isn't even finished yet. Now, not everybody around here feels that this design is an abomination. In fact, some people rather enjoy it. It's witty, it's upbeat. It adds a little sense of humor. I love it. It's one of the real one of the real interest factors. And the only, I think, in the building of the modern school. I mean, that in itself. It doesn't clash. Opposing residents have appealed to the Commission for Historic and Architectural Preservation, a group which governs any architectural changes in 12 citywide districts, including Bolton Hill. The commission says it approved a design for the Mount Royal School, but not this design. This contraption went up without anybody getting a permit for it. We would like to see it taken down. And according to what we understand, the original plans were that it be bricked with the existing glass windows. I love the building. I think it's very exciting. My son went to school here. He graduated last year, Jowett, and he said he wished he could still go because the building looks like such fun. The Preservation Commission apparently backs the opposing residents, but says it doesn't want to get involved in any fights. It looks like round one, however, has already begun. After 18 months of work, the Regional Planning Council has released its five year development plan for the Baltimore area. As Lisa Ciampa explains what the council is hopeful about the future. The Regional Planning Council, an advisory board made up of chief officers from its six subdivisions Howard Harford, Carol Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties and Baltimore City calls its 1980 2A5 year development plan for the area. Optimistic for simple reason, Officials say the population in this area has increased only about half as much as expected in the last five years. The fact that the population is not growing as rapidly. It really does make me optimistic that the resources we have will go further and perhaps provide a somewhat better life for those of us who are here. The plan, which is no more than a set of guidelines, also realistically reflects a bad economy and reductions in federal aid. Heavy rains kept last year's attendance down until the Labor Day weekend. This year, organizers are hoping to draw 400,000 people. The state fair opens next weekend and runs through Labor Day. Besides the traditional rides and games, there will also be all sorts of livestock events. The fair is held at Tammany and Fairgrounds Friday. And if you can make time on him for quite a few visitors to the Inner Harbor, there was an unusual sight this weekend. The steam tug Baltimore, very much showing the effects of years under water, was tied up at the Inner Harbor. The Baltimore Museum of Industry raised the Baltimore from the Sassafras River late last year, up to this weekend. They have been restoring the tug, but there is still more to do. Good luck, too. Thank you. Great game, too. It was tremendous game. You know, it makes it a lot easier to call a game like that when they win it. It really does. But first, let's get some people in fawned over the Orioles. They did not play yet. A rare Sunday evening game in Texas tonight because of the heat down there in Arlington. The Orioles have to play an evening game in Texas and the Milwaukee Brewers are playing in Seattle. So that means that neither team has moved on either team so far. So we'll have details hopefully on the Orioles tonight at 11:00 when we join you in Eyewitness News. But there were some games played this afternoon in baseball. As we take a look at the American League scoreboard, the Boston, Texas game, Seattle, Milwaukee, again tonight. Boston in Oakland, we had a scoreless game in the fourth inning, but I know the Red Sox won this game. I just don't have the final. That's what I was looking for.
